LZC Technology
What is micro-CHP?
Electricity from the national grid is generated by large, remote power stations which every year waste enoughenergy to heat most of our buildings. This huge waste ofenergy results in very inefficient and very expensive gridsupplied electricity.Micro-Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is thesimultaneous generation of heat and electricity, close to thepoint of use. By locating micro-CHP equipment in or closeto a building, the electricity generated and the heatproduced can be used in the building with little energywastage.
Carbon saving technology
Micro-CHP is a key microgeneration technology which candeliver carbon savings of 20%-30%. It is a mature, reliabletechnology which delivers very attractive financial benefitsand can play a big part in gaining compliance with planningand Building Regulations.
Micro-CHP FunctionsThe Baxi Ecogen micro-CHP incorporates a Stirling engineunit which, when fired, modulates its output between 4kWand 6kW thermal, whilst generating up to 1.1kW ofelectricity. The electricity which is generated from the BaxiEcogen is offset against the customer’s electricity billsproviding substantial running cost savings. The onboard control system is configured to use theBaxi Ecogen engine as the lead appliance to maximise thebenefits of using small scale micro generation and maximise
the reduction in carbon emissions. If the load is greater than6kW, the main boiler is then brought in to operation tosatisfy this demand. At peak times the auxiliary burner onthe Baxi Ecogen will then be brought in to operation toprovide a final heat source.

Baxi Ecogen micro-CHP OptionThe Ecoskid can be provided with an integral Baxi Ecogenmicro-CHP unit. This reduces the carbon footprint of thesystem by displacing the CO2 emissions associated withgas fired power generation of electricity. The Baxi Ecogenreduces the operational cost of the site by reducing theelectrical requirement purchased from the electrical supplier. The control system automatically utilises the Baxi Ecogen asthe lead boiler to maximise the carbon reduction associatedwith micro-CHP technology.

EcoskidWater Heater Integration
The Ecoskid has been designed towork alongside our highly efficientappliances from the Baxi CommercialDivision range. The Ecoskid has thefacility to feed an additional appliancelike the NEOflo, with both electric andgas services being fed directly fromthe Ecoskid. The NEOflo range of condensingdirect-fired storage water heaters arethe latest models to emerge frommarket leading Andrews WaterHeaters. Employing a single upwardfiring pre-mix burner technology,NEOflo offers high fuel efficienciesand ultra low NOx of around 25ppm,satisfying the increasing demandsof stringent building regulations.NEOflo water heaters utilise highlydurable stainless steel internal storagecylinders with available capacities of200 litres, 300 litres and 400 litres andan impressive recovery rate of 430litres per hour. The low internal pressure loss acrossthe stainless steel heat exchanger andinternal water way enables NEOflowater heaters to operate in thoseareas of the country where low waterpressure is prominent.Available as a room sealed orconventional flued appliance, NEOflooffers flexibility with regard to thelocation of the water heater anddischarge of the products ofcombustion.A digital Human Machine Interfaceis present on the appliance displayingkey parameters with the ability toconnect to an on-site BuildingManagement System (BMS) for controland supervision.

EcoskidControls
The standard panel comesready for BMS integrationand has connections.Available for monitoring thestatus of the main systemcomponents and forcontrolling the system usinga 0 – 10v signal (Relating to0 – 100% of total systemoutput). See page 14 for more details on the availableconnections for monitoring and BMS integration.
The controls for the Ecoskidrequire no more than singlephase 230v 50hz supply tobe connected directly in tothe control panel. Eachpiece of equipment has aMCB to offer protection andan individual isolator to enable each piece of equipment tobe isolated individually with out the need to shut down therest of the system for ease of maintenance.
The front panel has anumber of blank labels thatcan be changed byremoving the four screwsand fitting an alternativelabel. This facility has beenprovided to allow the controlpanel to be expanded withthe use of optional extrapacks.
Where these optional extrapacks are used, you willfind behind the label on therear of the door, all theconnections to completethe installation of thesepacks. Optional packs areprovided for:• Weather compensated controller• Constant flow temperature controller• Time control (for use with a constant temperatureor weather compensated controls)• Frost protection (3 Stage)• Additional isolator for water heater integration
When either the constant flow or weather compensatorcontrols are used, they provide the 0 – 10v signal and canbe used as a stand alone control option either with orwithout a time switch. If a BMS is still used to enable and monitor the systemthe BMS 0 – 10v input connections can now be usedto monitor the output of the system (0 – 100% of totalsystem output).
The 0 – 10V signal fromeither of the methodsabove, is fed in to a robustand reliable Mitsubishi PLCwhich controls the systemby sequencing andmodulating the boilers toclosely match the system demand whilst ensuring thesystem operates at its most efficient by utilising the variousheat sources in the correct sequence.
The Ecoskid has a built in and pre-configured control panel that offers a great deal of flexibility and integration. Thecontrol panel is supplied pre-wired with all looms secured to the onboard cable management system, meaning theinstaller only needs to connect the single phase 230v supply to the control panel, saving both time and materialcosts on having to install and integrate control systems.
EcoskidControls
Sequence of OperationThe PLC will always bring on the BaxiEcogen engine (If a Baxi Ecogenversion is requested), as using theengine for as long as possible willmaximise both the carbon savings andelectrical output from the micro-CHP.If this does not satisfy the load, thecondensing boiler will be brought in tooperation and modulated to match theheat demand. At peak heat demand, the auxiliaryburner on the Baxi Ecogen will fire toprovide a final source of heat.
Pump/Flow MonitoringThe PLC will monitor the pump andflow conditions of the system andensure that both pumps are operatedequally in respect to hours run. ThePLC will monitor for flow fail and bringon the standby pump should a flow failcondition be observed. Each pump isoperated once a week to ensure thepump heads do not seize duringperiods of non-use.Flow proving is provided by adifferential pressure switch.
Frost protectionFrost protection is provided via anoptional extra pack that is suppliedwith an outside thermostat and twoimmersion stats that fit in to thepockets provided on the return pipe.Once fitted, the frost protection will beactivated once a user set temperatureis observed by the outside thermostat. This will operate the pumps until theoutside temperature increases and thisthermostat is satisfied.Once the frost protection is activatedand the pumps are running, thesystem then monitors the return pipetemperature. If the temperature isbelow a user set value, the system willstart the Baxi Ecogen engine toprovide an input of up to 6kW (On twinboiler versions the system operates
Boiler No1 and modulates it asrequired). This engine will operate asrequired until either the temperaturerises above the thermostats triggerpoint or the temperature drops pastthe user set value for the second frostimmersion thermostat. If this secondimmersion thermostat is triggered, thesystem will then allow the secondboiler to fire to provide full load in tothe system to ensure the building isprotected at all times, whilst operatingas efficiently as possible.
Hot Water FunctionsThe Ecoskid caters for hot waterintegration in a number of ways, eitherby using a dedicated water heater fedfrom the Ecoskid or by means of atemperature boost function. If thesystem is fitted with the weathercompensated controller, the systemmay not be operating at a high enoughtemperature during mild periods toprovide hot water. This can beovercome by giving the system anoverride signal (via vfc) which willenable the Ecoskid to operate atmaximum temperature until the hotwater is satisfied and the overridesignal removed. An end switch on athree way diverter valve can be usedfor this purpose. Once the signal hasbeen removed, the system will revertback to the temperature requestedfrom the controller. This enables thesystem to operate in condensing modefor as long as possible while stillsupplying your hot water requirements.
See page 14 for more information onthe electrical connection of optionalextra packs.
