The products involved in the solution’s package are:
• I-SKETCH , I-CONVERT, I-EXPORT Disclaimer: I-SKETCH, I-CONVERT and I-EXPORT are only marketed by Intergraph Corporation. You can only license these programs from Intergraph. ISOGEN as mentioned throughout this publication is part of I-SKETCH. ISOGEN can also be sub-licensed from various makers of 3-D CAD systems.
• Smart Stress Iso and PTR2TRD from Nor-Par Online A/S • TRIFLEX from PipingSolutions Inc. Nor-Par is a distributor of TRIFLEX. • PIPENET from Sunrise Systems Ltd. Nor-Par is a distributor of PIPENET.
The information flow in Smart Stress Iso can be shown as:
The activities involved with Smart Stress Iso can be listed as: In case the Piping Specs and Piping Models from 3-D Plant Design Systems such as PDMS, PDS or AutoPlant are to be re-used:
1. Converting the Piping Specs from PDMS, PDS or AutoPlant. This is one time activity 2. Importing CAD Iso files into I-SKETCH
The activities directly related do Smart Stress Iso are:
1. Transferring the piping system into TRIFLEX 2. Performing Piping Stress Analysis in TRIFLEX 3. Updating the I-SKETCH model with results of Stress Analysis (new supports, changed
support functions, new geometry.) 4. Creating Stress Isometrics based on I-SKETCH geometry and TRIFLEX data
If the user chooses to create new 3-D CAD Piping Models:
1. Single-click I-EXPORT to new 3-D CAD model
RE-USING EXISTING CAD PROJECTS Step 1: Converting the Piping Specs from PDMS, PDS or AutoPlant I-SKETCH allows the user direct importing CAD Iso files. However, if the user prefers to modify the imported piping models in I-SKETCH, he/she needs to use the same Piping Specs as the 3-D CAD project uses. The program I-CONVERT has tools that extract Piping Specification from the CAD project as the neutral file. The I-CONVERT user maps the CAD information onto I-SKETCH system. This activity is done one time. Afterwards, all Piping Specs can be converted to I-SKETCH format in one step. If the CAD Piping Specs change later, a single mouse click is only needed to update the I-SKETCH Specs.

This is how I-CONVERT translates the Piping Specs: From PDMS (sample elbow data):
To I-SKETCH:
In I-SKETCH, the converted Piping Specs are selected to the Project. Step 2: Importing CAD Iso files into I-SKETCH When Isometric drawings are generated in 3-D CAD system, it is done in Alias’ ISOGEN or PDMS IsoDraft. In each case, compatible IDF or PCF files are produced. The IDF or PCF file is imported to I-SKETCH by simple opening the file:
This creates an I-SKETCH job where all geometry and technical information for given pipe is available. The user has access to all this info and to all components from the CAD Piping Specification. It is possible to merge many pipes into one piping system.
WORKING WITH SMART STRESS ISO Step 1: Transferring the piping system into TRIFLEX First you need to generate an isometric drawing in I-SKETCH to get the universal PCF data file. (The sample piping isometric drawing has been show on next page.) Then you run conversions in Smart Stress Iso:
You can run two conversions at the same time:
• PCF -> TRIFLEX option will transfer all geometry and technical data to TRIFLEX. If there is any doubt about Material or Wall Thickness, Smart Stress Iso will launch Spec Builder, so you can answer some questions once. The same questions will be not asked again.
• TRIFLEX node no -> PCF option modifies the universal PCF file by adding the TRIFLEX node information. This will allow to produce Stress Isometrics with TRIFLEX Node Number balloons later
This creates a TRIFLEX Keyword file Step 2: Performing Piping Stress Analysis in TRIFLEX You open the Keyword file in TRIFLEX:
The TRIFLEX job contains all needed information to start the Stress Analysis, for example: Pipe Properties
Component Data
Whatever information is needed for Stress Analysis that is available from CAD system finds it way to TRIFLEX in automated way. The Stress Analyst only needs to set up Modeling Defaults and Case Definition in TRIFLEX, inspect the data and the analysis can be performed instantly.
Now, the Stress Analyst can take the decisions about applying supports, changing their functions and modifying network geometry as needed to meet the Code Compliance.
Step 3: Updating the I-SKETCH model with results of Stress Analysis The results of the Stress Analyst work need to be introduced in I-SKETCH and the calculation verified in TRIFLEX.
Step 4: Creating Stress Isometrics based on I-SKETCH geometry and TRIFLEX data As the result of the TRIFLEX analysis, the iOUT file is created in I-SKETCH. This file serves for Stress Table generation option in Smart Stress Iso.
To generate the Stress Isometric, you open the universal PCF file and generate the drawing in STRESS style. The isometric drawing contains TRIFLEX node number balloons, displacement info for supports, and support functions:

TRANSFERRING THE MODIFIED PIPING MODEL TO THE 3-D CAD SYSTEM Step 1: Single-click I-EXPORT to new 3-D CAD model Alias provide I-EXPORT and part of I-SKETCH Enterprise suite. With I-EXPORT, you simply choose your finished and accepted I-SKETCH models in I-EXPORT, and with a single mouse click ready new models are created in:
• PDMS: PML format • PDS: APL format • AutoPlant PXF format
Upon correct authorization, these export formats can be used to create new Piping Models in 3-D CAD Systems.
