Principal’s Report
Braille Writing Competition Awards Night
Each year the Sydney Braille Forum, Australian Braille Authority, organises a Braille Writing Competition for NSW pre-school and K–12 students who use Braille as their literary medium. The competition aims to promote Braille as an important literacy tool and encourage our students to develop their Braille knowledge and skills while engaging their creative writing skills.
On Wednesday, 17 November we celebrated the achievements of Lachlan E (4/3J), Amelia H (KS) and all our competition entrants at our virtual Braille Awards night over Zoom. We were also very fortunate to have Aura Parker (past parent of LCW PS) as our guest author this year.
A huge congratulations to Lachlan who received two awards, Creativity of Story and Proofreading, for his story, ‘Charlie Saves Christmas’ and Amelia who received a special award for her story, ‘The Tooth Fairy’.
Well done and keep up the wonderful Braille work Lachlan and Amelia, we’re very proud of you!

Could you be an ethics coordinator for Lane Cove West Public School?
Our current ethics coordinator has moved on and we are urgently seeking a volunteer so that classes can continue next year. Ethics classes begin at Lane Cove West Public School in Kindergarten and we want to make them available for children from kindergarten to Year 6.
The ethics coordinator communicates with school staff, recruits and supports ethics teachers and liaises with Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the program.
This role provides a great opportunity for a working parent who might be unable to volunteer during school hours and is a rewarding way to engage with the school community. Times are flexible, requiring approximately 1-2 hours per week, although is busier at the beginning of Term 1. Training is provided, either online or in person on weekends..
In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure.
Children discuss topic such as:
• imagining how others feel
• how do we treat living things?
• what is laziness?
• how do we disagree in a respectful way?
• fairness
If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school, please visit primaryethics.com.au and send in an application or contact our regional manager, Julie Brown at julie.brown@primaryethics.com.au or call her on 0412 128 209.

Tell Them from Me Survey
As part of our reflective practice, the school participates in the Tell Them Form
Me survey. There are three different surveys that are completed by our school
community; a student survey, a teacher survey and a parent survey. This
information is then analysed to identify areas of strengths and areas of focus
moving forward. By completing the survey you are helping to guide decision-making for school planning
and ultimately increase student achievement.
Please take a moment to complete the survey, using the link below, and support our school.

Calling the school
Please use the telephone in case of emergency only. The best way to communicate with a teacher or other
member of staff is via a note sent with your child or by sending an email to the school email. Your classroom
teacher is the initial point of contact if you have any questions or concerns, but as stated above any urgent
matters should be emailed directly to the school.
Keep in mind it is not always possible to get a phone message to your child’s class, particularly towards the
end of the day. Make sure they know each morning how they are getting home and what they should do if
they are feeling uncertain.
Reporting absences
The Skoolbag app is the preferred method for reporting
your child’s absence for the day.
If for some reason you decide to email the class teacher
directly, keep in mind that if your child’s teacher is away
from school that day, the message may not make it
through. If a teacher is off site due to training or sickness
they are not required to check their email.
For this reason all emails should be send to the school’s
address clearly stating your child’s name and class.
Lanecovew-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au
Borrowed Clothes
If your child has borrowed clothes from the school, please wash and return them as soon as possible. It is
also a good idea to have a spare pair of underpants and long pants or stockings packed in your child’s bag in
case they have an accident at school.
Merit Awards
When your child has received five merit awards, they can hand them in at the office to be issued with a
Gold award. Once your child has five Gold awards, they then hand them in to receive a Banner. All awards
are presented fortnightly. Please do not laminate the awards as they can not be stamped and will instead
need to have the corner cut. They should also not be stuck into a scrapbook other wise the front of the
award will need to be stamped.
Please take good care of your awards as lost ones will not be reissued!
