Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms
towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into
the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening
thought and action;
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father,
let my country awake.

Considering that who we are is as important as what we want to achieve,
APL maintains a progressive mind-set that is open to growth and change
in the spirit of personalisation. In this personalized atmosphere, a student
is encouraged to discuss how they would prefer to set goals and pace their
learning program. Conversations are invited; a compassionate mentoring

Cambridge Assessment International Education
We are a registered school of Cambridge Assessment International Education
(IN039) , part of the University of Cambridge. Through Cambridge International’s
programmes, APL prepares students for higher education and also helps
them develop an informed curiosity and a lasting passion for learning. The
Cambridge Pathways give students a clear direction for educational success
where they also discover new abilities, have a wider exposure and give them
the skills they need for life. The curriculum in each stage of the Pathway has

aims and objectives to develop the Cambridge learner attributes.
The delivery of Cambridge International qualifications through APL’s
Personalized Learning design ensures that the student is a self-learner and
has the necessary skills to excel in university level courses. We shape the
Cambridge curriculum around how our students learn and offer a wide range
of subjects which allows greater flexibility for them to make their choices.
National Institute of Open Schooling
We are also accredited to the National Institute of Open Schooling (190146)
curriculum. NIOS is a national level board of education through which
students complete their Secondary & Senior Secondary school program. It
is internationally recognised and students have been known to pursue their
higher education across the world. NIOS, hence is recognised worldwide and
the Association of Indian Universities has issued the Equivalence of Senior
Secondary Certificate Examination of NIOS.
The board offers students significant flexibility in their pace of learning. In
addition to the wide variety of subject choices, it is possible to have staged
assessments and a range of accommodations to support those students with
special educational needs.
NIOS has provision of offering Vocational subjects in combination with
Academic subjects at secondary & senior secondary level.
Complementing the academic curriculum are the co-curricular activities
which come under the banner of ‘'Expressions'’ and function through several
clubs. Expressions functions with its own particular syllabus with each club
having a teacher-facilitator allowing an experiential learning for students.
About Us
15
The progression of learning broadly follows a process that falls under the 4 E
cycle: Exposition - Evaluation - Exploration - Enrichment with the objective
being whole brain development through the key elements of – social outreach,
skill development, character and values development.
Responsible Citizenship Program aims to create awareness and sensitise
our students to social issues globally, nationally and locally. Students learn to
initiate and sustain social developmental work by directly working with issues
of concern in the school and the locality.
Explore sessions are aimed at creating a non-judgmental space for students
to share their ideas about various topics. The objective of these sessions are
social and emotional development of students. It gives students structured
time each week to learn to reflect on different social and emotional aspects
which are relevant to them with the guidance of a facilitator. These sessions
are facilitated by the Counsellors and few Teachers.
The topics for Explore are chosen by the Counsellors and the students
consensually and are discussed using different methodologies like interactive
sessions, activities, power-point presentations, role-plays, videos and
debates. The content for Explore is designed by the Counsellors and is age-
appropriately presented to the students across Grades 2-12.
Meraki - Centre for Creative Expressions helps students to explore creation
and expression through Art, Music, Movement and Photography. The
department nurtures an inclusive environment for students, allowing for
a fluid engagement with the art forms from Grade 3 onwards. Through an
immersive experience in art making, creative process and reflections, Meraki
aims to go beyond the product, to promote artistic process. We strongly believe
About Us
16
that it is the process of art-making that gives a child the creative confidence,
not merely the final product.
Meraki is offered for students of the NIOS stream. The 11th and 12th Grade
students may opt to take up an area in greater depth to create a body of work
in art, music or photography.
The main aim of the Eat Your School Garden movement is to impart Education
for Sustainability (EfS) and share our best practices with other schools
to encourage them to create such learning gardens. Started in 2017, APL
students set out to create a garden campus that is edible. It now has two
Miyawaki Forests that are now self-sustaining with over 20 varieties of trees,
shrubs, and other vegetation. We follow regenerative agricultural practices
where there is minimal cost and external inputs and maximum benefits such
as harvests, a permanent ecosystem with bio diverse flora and fauna, and a
closed loop system.
Sports help to build character and teach the importance of discipline in life.
It inculcates a respect for rules and allows the participants to learn the value
of self control, sportsmanship, team spirit. The sports facilities at APL have
two 5 A side football pitches, one basketball court, one volleyball/throw ball
court, three cricket nets, three indoor badminton courts, four table tennis
boards. An Indoor gym is available for students who have opted for Physical
Education as a subject.
Young people make positive changes to their lives and communities through
participation in meaningful activities. To help our students in reaching their
greatest potential, the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) awards was instituted for
Grades 9 to 12. The award comprises 4 sections - Skills, Volunteering, Physical

Recreation and an Adventurous Journey. The DofE is the world's leading youth
achievement award, giving millions of 14 to 24-year-old's the opportunity to
be the very best they can be. "The objective of this programme is to provide
an introduction to worthwhile leisure activities and voluntary service, as
a challenge to the individual to discover the satisfaction of achievement."
These awards are in line with our school's philosophy of holistic development,
emphasizing non-competitive growth and progress of young minds.
At APL, Academic Counselling is offered to students of Grades 8 to 12 .
Our inhouse academic counsellors guide students to realize their academic
aspirations and help develop a road-map to achieve their goals by regularly
tracking their performance. While choosing subjects for NIOS, IGCSE and
AS/A levels, they help students understand their aptitude and interest
using psychometric assessment tools. They support the students in building
strengths and skills required to pursue the courses and career of their choice.
Throughout the year, the counsellors keep students and parents up to date
on trending careers and opportunities by means of webinars, guest lectures,
presentations and career fairs.

ABOUT THE MANAGEMENT
Mrs. Gita Jagannathan is the owner and director of APL Global School,
Chennai. She is a voracious reader and connoisseur of fine art, music, and
humorous tales. She has a penchant for exploration
and thirst to constantly evolve; attributes that reflect
her growing-up years when she had to make sense
of the cumulative experiences of travelling through
8 different schools, her father having been in a
transferable job. APL Global School is the outcome
of her search for an inclusive and nurturing space.
Gifted with a thirst for the whys and hows of a person’s
evolution she spent years reaching out, tutoring and
mentoring students who were struggling to fit in

more about giftedness, learning disabilities, and special education. She used
the Cambridge International Diploma for Teachers and Trainers and a course
with harvard Wide on Differentiated Strategies to deepen her understanding
of pedagogy and learning. Gita is a Reiki Grand Master, a hypnotherapist and
a student of Yoga. This spiritual sensibility in combination with her skills in
psychology and counseling alchemically contributed to the birth of APL school
as a space to experience personalized learning for students, faculty members
and all stake holders.

possible for each of us to realize our true potential and create an environment
that is supportive. The school comes together to create personalized learning

Sheela has travelled extensively and it has
expanded her horizons and fed her curiosity in
Diversity, Culture, Art and history. Moving back to
India gave her an opening into a new field of
learning and one that allowed her love of languages
to flourish. This led to her spending the succeeding
years learning Sanskrit, French and German. She
completed her C1 level in French at Alliance
Francaise Madras, and A2 level in German at Goethe
Institut, Chennai.
From here, moving on to teaching was a natural progression. Sheela started
her career with APL in 2013. Completing the training in Differentiating
Instruction’ offered by harvard Wide gave her an additional perspective into
APL’s philosophy. She was able to work with multiple levels of schools and
share her knowledge of French as well as the Sciences.
As the Latin proverb goes, Docendo discimus - “by teaching, we learn”. The
unabashed love to explore and discover that children exhibit keeps her
constantly motivated and in working with children, she has found a way to
continue her professional and personal growth.
Taking on the role of the French Coordinator for Junior and Senior School at
APL was only a step towards her current role as the head of Lower
Secondary School. Throughout her career, she has been guiding and mentor-
ing the teachers in her team in every way that counts. She will continue to
motivate and inspire the teachers as well as the students keeping the APL
pedagogy and philosophy in the forefront of her mind.

OUR ASSESSMENT PATTERN
Assessment is a very natural and intrinsic part of the learning experience at
APL. It is done to develop the confidence and aspiration levels of students
while keeping in mind their level of readiness.
The assessment pattern for KG - 2 is continuous and formative in nature.
Grade 3 is gently transitioned to the world of formal assessments.
Differentiated worksheets, marked assignment, portfolios and class activities
are used for formative assessments. These not only help the students in self
evaluation but also allow the teachers to recognise the gaps in learning and
address them during the instructional period.
Formative assessments
Individual Learning Presentation (ILP), is a way of increasing student
accountability and autonomy concerning academics and their habits of work
and learning. Students upto Grade 8 present their work to their parents in an
organised way. This is a time for them to acknowledge their achievements
while they take an active and meaningful role in their own learning.
At APL we use Portfolio based assessment till Gr 8. A Portfolio is a record
of a student’s learning, reflection and progression throughout their school
years. Each student prepares and creates a portfolio for themselves across
the year to showcase their overall and holistic development. The portfolio
contains works of the students that are academic and non-academic in
nature. Students become responsible and take charge of their learning by
planning and choosing what needs to go into the portfolio. Spending time
to prepare the Portfolio gives the students and the teacher-facilitators the
opportunity to reflect on how far the student has progressed during the year.
Assessment
44
This portfolio of learning the students present to their parents on ILP along
with the other activities.
For Pre-NIOS & Grade 9-12 NIOS, Marked Assignment, concept wise projects
or write up is formative assessment. If a student has TMA submission , then
the marked assignment for that subject is the TMA.
Summative assessment ( Semester exams)
Grades 3 to 5
The Semester exams are divided into sections A, B and C which, besides
testing their knowledge and understanding, gives students ample opportunity
to explore their ability by attempting higher order thinking questions.
Grades 6 to 8
The Semester exams follow the Progression pattern of Cambridge International.
Each subject will have multiple papers based on taxonomy. Students will have
a choice between high and Medium papers in a few subjects.
Senior School-Grades 9 to 12 (NIOS & Cambridge International)
Cambridge International
The nature of assessments will be in the form of the formal assessment
(conducted during class hours), marked assignments, open book assessment,
worksheets and academic portfolio. Students can defer the formal assessment
once in an academic year in case of absenteeism due to illness or any activity
permitted by the school. They will have to coordinate with the exam department
to take this assessment within a week.
Assessment
45
Pre NIOS & NIOS
For Pre NIOS & Grade 9-12 NIOS, the summative assessments are in the
form of PLPs, to test their knowledge and understanding, thinking and writing
skills. The PLPs are midterm assessments conducted once in each semester
through the academic session . Pre NIOS students cannot defer the PLP,
whereas the students of grades 9-12 can defer a PLP once in an academic
year. They need to take the PLP on the day they are back to school and within
a week of the missed PLP. Students can defer the PLP once in an academic
year in case of absenteeism due to illness or any activity permitted by the
school. They will have to coordinate with the exam department to take this
assessment within a week.
Semester and Mock exams
Grades 9-12 follow the Cambridge International/NIOS pattern of assessment.
No deferment is allowed for Semester/ Mock exams.
We request you to ensure that your ward/wards take the assessments as per
the schedule.
Mock exams are conducted for grades 10, 11 & 12 to prepare the students
for the Cambridge International exam sessions. The Parent Consent form for
the registration is given to Grade 10, 11 and 12 students, approximately three
months before the start of the Cambridge International exam session. The
registration is done after the first mock exam. Registration will be withheld
for students who do not meet the pass criteria in all the assessments and in
the first mock as well as 80 % class attendance. Students who do not qualify
will be considered only after evaluating their performance in the second
mock. In such a situation, the late fine per subject will have to be paid by the
student. For more details you may contact the Cambridge International Exam
Assessment
46
Officer.
For NIOS students, Semester exam and Mock exams are conducted for grades
9, 10, 11 & 12 to prepare the students for the NIOS board examinations.
With respect to the exam registration, approval from the school will be given
subject to the student's readiness to take the exam as well as its mandatory to
have 80% class attendance. Board exam online registration is done assisted
by the NIOS administrator at school.
The dates of the mock exams are mentioned in the academic calendar. These
exams will have to be taken as per the schedule and will not be rescheduled
for individual students. The school will adhere to the calendar unless there is
a government declared school holiday.
Our Feedback Pattern
Constructive feedback is provided periodically in the form of –
uVerbal feedback, comments on assignment submissions etc.
uPortfolio
uSemester End Reports
uMock Exam Reports
Parents are also invited to meet the subject teachers, mentor and the heads
of School, together with the student to discuss performances, challenges and
needs. Mentors can assist you schedule these appointments.
Our Reporting Pattern
In keeping with the pedagogic systems at APL, our reporting pattern takes a
holistic view of the student’s development, progress and performance. The
progress report gives an analysis of the child’s performance which includes
their Learner Profile, Socio-emotional strengths, Scholastic performance,
Assessment
47
and their engagement with Sports and Co-curricular performance.
The Progress Report is a biannual report based on the above parameters
for grades LKG-12. At the KG level, the report is biannual for LKG and UKG
and for Pre-KG it is given at the end of the Academic year. For grades 10 to
12 students will receive Mock reports as additional report cards. Till Grade
2 it will be a narrative report card. Report cards from grade 3 will be in the
following format;
LEARNER PROFILE (Section A)
The Cambridge Learner Attributes guide our pedagogy and assessment at
APL. Our learning systems are designed to develop students who are:
u"Confident in working with information and ideas their own and those of
others
uResponsible for themselves, responsive to and respectful of others
uReflective as learners, developing their ability to learn
uInnovative and equipped for new and future challenges
uEngaged intellectually and socially, ready to make a difference"”
SOCIO-EMOTIONAL STRENGTHS (Section B)
Socio-emotional strengths assessment is designed to reflect the growth
and development of the student’s social, intra and interpersonal skills. It is
a measure and a reflection of the student’s ability to accept responsibility
for their own work ethics and behaviour. Being an aware and a responsible
citizen is also an important area of development that is addressed through
this assessment.
Assessment
48
SCHOLASTIC PERFORMANCE (Section C)
Performance assessment looks at a trend showing the development of the
student in each subject through the semester. A Cumulative score is arrived
based on assignments taken through the semester and the semester-end
exam.
The results are represented through bar graphs to enable a clear understanding
of the performance and the trend of achievements over the semester.
PHYSICAL FITNESS (Section D)
Sports have always been an integral part of the APL curriculum. The path
shown by Dr. Kannan Pugazhendi is being carried forward ably by the sports
faculty. With a firm belief that the physical state impacts mental energies, APL
ensures that its students are exposed to regular fitness checks, exercises
and sports. The Progress Report reflects this in ample measure by providing
a report on the student’s status in terms of Physical Measures, Fitness and
Participation in Sports and Games as observed during the sports period in
school.
Co-curricular Activities (EXPRESSIONS) (Section E)
True to the APL promise of holistic growth, the Progress Report also reflects
the student’s level of interest and participation in a wide variety of activities
like performing arts, fine arts, literary exploration, financial literacy, culinary
art, organic farming, MUN, etc.
