The thirty-four T.Y.B.Sc. students and accompanying teachers (two staff Dr. Ela Dedhia and Ms.

Neha Mulchandani) reached the premises of Bhagini Samaj in the mornings on the fieldwork days

that were on a weekly basis. They were greeted by the creative enthusiastic women who keep

working relentlessly and completing textile work that was being taught over the sessions. Some

were helping others with their embroideries and the set-up was like interactive workshops with

one-to-one teaching and training. During the sessions, as per the prior plans made, we taught

different techniques of Traditional Embroideries, Paper bag and envelope making, Paper quilling,

Tie Dye and Printing on fabric, Flower making, Tufting and Fabric painting. We spoke to them

about how different dyes that are used on different fabrics and how they could create multiple

designs with techniques like folding, pleating, rouching, pegging etc. We also taught them

Manipuri embroidery with cotton threads and interlacing stitches. We gave them Indian traditional

motifs on which they worked and created beautifully crafted pieces. The ladies took keen interest

and showed lots of enthusiasm. As time permitted, we the students of Nirmala Niketan learnt the

basic knots of macramé and some of us started with making small pouches. We look forward to

seeing the smiling faces of our participants after they have done their dyeing or embroidery on

their fabric samples, session after session.

The extension work was organized for the T.Y B.Sc. students from 11th January 2014 to 22nd

January 2014 with the help of Sneha Foundation. The aim of the extension work was to instil

values of sharing and helping the underprivileged society. The students visited the centre (Sneha

foundation, Dharavi) on Saturdays from 2.00 to 4.30 pm. The ladies were very happy to see the

students and also took interest in talking to them. The number of ladies ranged from around 10 to

16 in numbers over the 3 Saturdays. Various products taught were tray cover, puppets, hangings

made of cloth, paper bags and embellishing them using different embroidery stitches. The overall

experience was learning and enriching. Also, students were involved in making and developing

products out of waste fabric available in college which is planned to be given away in charity. It

was also a time for interactive bonding between students and faculty. It has been an enriching

learning experience for all involved.

A two-day Extension programme to Gyanjyoti Community College, Karazgaon on 9th and 10th

December 2014. Students of M. Sc. I and M. Sc. II along with two faculty members Dr. Ritu

Madhan and Ms. Vibhuti Barve participated in the programme. It involved teaching pattern

making (basic and adaptations for variety in styles) and garment construction skills to the target

group (48 participants). Samples and drafts were made and donated as resource material for their

future reference. Various finishing and quality improvisations in techniques used for stitching

and advanced sewing techniques were shared (with special reference in making bags and cholis).

EXTENSION RURAL CAMP AT BHAL RASHMI (VARANA) VATAMAN

A two day extension program at Bhal Rashmi (Varana) Vataman 8th (night) and 12th (morning)

December 2014 at Nirmala Niketan Institute situated at Vataman, Vadodara. Thirty four students

of T. Y. B Sc. were accompanied by two faculty members Dr. Ela Dedhia and Dr.Pratima Goyal.

The skills taught included techniques of dyeing and printing of tie n dye, batik, natural dyeing,

block and screen printing. It involved making small samples and full-length dupattas. Various

techniques of quilling were also taught and then used to make accessories like pen-stands,

decorating bangles, neck piece using left-over materials and newspapers.

On 8th December 2014, 34 T.Y. B.Sc. Students were grouped into six Volunteer groups along

with two teachers (Dr. Ela Dedhia and Mrs. Pratima Goyal). Each group had planned for their

own topic to teach the target beneficiary group. Short sessions were conducted to impart

important textile related skills. We started with introduction of dyeing then further we proceeded

with basic information of fabric to printing. We practically showed them the different techniques

of tying fabrics for dyeing with the help of demonstration samples. We had 6 sessions with each

session of about 30-40mins.We taught them natural dyeing and printing techniques. The

participants were given hands-on experience of printing on samples with screens and blocks. We

then started dyed dupattas with attractive tie-dye patterns. Simultaneously, we also taught them

quilling and beading skills for making beautiful quilled products like neckpieces, earrings,

bracelets. The next day we taught them making of pen stands using newspapers. We also trained

them for second shade dyeing of dupattas. The products were beautifully displayed. We visited

the museum and excavation from the Harappan civilization. We also enjoyed short cultural

performances. The two-day training programme was an enriching experience for all of us.

A two-day workshop to Vidhyadeep Community College, Bharuch was organized on the 14th

and 15th December, 2015 by the MSc I and MSc II students and coordinated by the faculty. It

included teaching simple and different styles of basic kurtis and embellishments. Students visited

small village settlements to get acquainted with the rural lifestyle. They put up a short

entertainment and game session for the college boarders.

The Department of Textile and Fashion Technology organized the extension trip to Bharuch. The

M.Sc. I and II along with Ms. Neha Mulchandani and Dr. Anjali Srivastava departed for a joyful

journey on 14th December 2015 to Bharuch from Mumbai Central at 5:45 am by Gujarat express.

We reached Bharuch at 12 pm. We were warmly welcomed by the Sisters from the Bal

Vidyalaya who took care of our transport and accommodation. We were then taken to one of the

classrooms where the sister told us about the institute and the down to earth girls. We then

started to teach them jhola bags, how to take body measurements, and a little talk about

importance of finishing of the product. The M.Sc.I and II formed groups to teach the girls. They

indeed made lovely bags in a short span of time. Inspite of no lights in their stitching room, they

had the enthusiasm to finish their bags with embellishments in no time. After this we proceeded

with display of their bags, how to take body measurements, and advice on finishing of products t

enhance market value. We also showcased our ramp- walk, sang songs, and played garba, with

the target group and with the staff as a gesture of bonding and interaction. We may have taught

them about bags etc. but nothing compares to what they taught us. We learned how to be down to

earth, simplicity, a positive approach towards life, their respect towards not only elders but also

amongst each other, how to be happy with the little things in life, and how to be thankful for all

little or big thing we get in life. We forever cherish these memories.

got our students in the group, in the beginning we had a word with everyone... We made our names familiar

to each other and then we started with our teaching. We had to teach gown since the work was distributed

amongst the entire group.we began with the drafting of the gown, and after the lunch we went for the

stitching of the gown. Gown was finally done. After that the tie and dye of fabric was demonstrated by the

team of 6 people. Various techniques was shown.they enjoyed the outcome of it. I observed that their

stitching skills were more developed then us. Their speed was good then us. The gown was stitched by them

and we instructed them. After the gown, we started with the drafting of the pyjama and chudiddar. We made

them drew on their book, so that they could catch up easily. After the dinner, we planned up a small activity

session for them which included some dance performed by us and also few games. After this the bond

between us grew up. Next day morning after the breakfast we started with the embroidery... Different types

of stitches we showed them. The good thing was they knew most of the stitches as they would use in their

regular schedule.now comes the hospitality. Dr.cecelia who was the incharge of the food, accomodation,

travelling etc… i liked their hospitality. Sister gave us whatever we needed; she made sure that the food

reaches to each one of us. On 15th tuesday evening we left from there. Thank you
