Furious Olievenhoutbosch residents are accusing a municipal employee of illegally selling RDP houses that do not belong to him. The community alleged that they were in possession of a voice recording prov-ing that the offi cial was selling the houses illegally.

According to concerned community members, the man whose identity is known to has been selling the houses de-spite the area reportedly having a shortage of houses. Community members said they were tired of corruption and wanted this matter to

be made public. One of the members who strongly supported the idea of airing the re-cordings to the public said she did not agree with the Ward Task Team’s (WTT) decision not to expose what she termed ‘a culprit’. Requesting that her identity remain hidden, she said the community was sick and tired of being led by corrupt offi cials and that they wanted to set an example to those who thought of making money at the expense of the poor and by misusing their political pow-ers to oppress others. Another WTT member

who spoke out on condition of anonymity said they only dealt with election issues, but that they could not allow the recordings to become public knowledge, as investigations were still being conducted and no one had been confi rmed guilty of a crime.

Sanco secretary Kleinboy Aphane said they would call a public meeting and that the public would soon know all the details. According to residents, the houses dicussed in the lenghthy audio recording are situated in Extension 23.

The houses are show houses and not for residential purposes.

“These houses were supposed to be used for the benefi t of the community, so we were surprised to hear that they were sold,” an upset resident said.

The metro is pursuing a legal route to deal with people selling RDP houses il-legally, but did not comment on the allega-tions that the voice in the audio recording belonged to an offi cial in the mayor’s offi ce.

“Investigations are underway to stop the number of reported fraudulent sales of RDPs. We will also be embarking on educational campaigns around this issue and call upon the community to report cases of fraud and theft against such offi cials,” Bless-ing Manale, spokesperson for the mayor, concluded.

The controversial prepaid electricity meter contract court case kicked off last week, with AfriForum trying in the Pretoria High Court to convince judge Hans Fabricius to grant an interdict to stop the installa-tion of meters, pending an application in which the court will be asked to nullify the R8m prepaid electric smart meter contract tender.

AfriForum contested the contract say-ing it was highly dubious, as it was not awarded through normal procurement procedures.

Advocate Quintis Pelser, appearing on behalf of AfriForum, said the tender proce-dures where Peu Capital Partners Ltd and Tshwane Utility Management Service Ltd (Tums) were awarded the contract without it being open to other bidders, was highly irregular. He argued that the whole process of the tender was was illegal. Pelser told the court that the municipality called in a panel of fi nancial and legal advisors to advise the Tshwane metro on the procure-ment of funding.

This resulted in Peu suggesting the installation of prepaid meters by them, something that fell outside the scope of what was called for. Pelser argued that Peu could not be an advisor and service provider for the installation of prepaid meters at the same time without steering the awarding of the tender through the proper channels and allowing other bidders to compete for the tender.

According to Pelser, AfriForum was not against the instillation of prepaid meters, as the advantages of the system were ap-parent. Their case was also not aimed at the dismantling of the alleged 272 meters already installed.

Pelser asked that the metro be prevented from further unfolding the project, since an application would be launched in which the court would be asked to terminate the tender. Pelser pointed out that the cost of electricity from a standard municipal docu-ment of accounts showed as being 12% in 2011, 13% in 2012 and 12% in 2013 for every R1 and that this was with bad debt included. He said there were no justifi ca-tions in the metro’s claim that electricity cost 27% for every R1 to the council. “The people of the Tshwane metro cannot ben-efi t from the envisaged system,” he said.

“The system is too expensive, much more than it should be. It is 7,5% more in the rand than the old system. One should seriously consider the viability of the sys-tem,” Pelser said.

Pelser said Peu arranged the terms of the contract. The contract started out as biased and favourable to Peu, as they used their own attorneys in the grafting of it.

“This clearly boils down to a confl ict of interest. Peu will tell the Tshwane metro what they want. But there is no clear indi-cation of who does what,” Pelser said.

Judge Fabricius said the prepaid meter-ing system had the advantage of being a win-win situation for consumers and for the metro. “Don’t you agree that the sooner the system is in place, the better it will be for consumers?” he asked Pelser, whereupon Pelser answered bluntly: “No, the sooner it is stopped the better.”

Appearing for the Tshwane metro, advocate William Mokhare said AfriForum had failed to prove that the installation of the smart meters could cause irreparable harm. He declared that by using smart me-ters, the council would be saving money that would have been lost and that this would be to the benefi t of consumers.

The 35-year old man who is being accused of murdering his parents in the family’s home in Valhalla on Friday will reappear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court for a formal bail application today. According to the police, Herman Pienaar was arrested in Boksburg North along with a friend, who was in pos-session of an unlicensed fi rearm and a vehicle that belonged to one of the deceased.

Police spokesperson, Captain Agnus Huma, said the bodies of Herman (senior) and Christine Pienaar were discovered by their domestic worker when she came in to work.

Huma said that at around 07:10 the domes-tic worker suspected something was wrong when her employers did not open the gate for her as they usually did. Her SMS to alert her employers of her arrival also remained unanswered.

A neighbour, who saw the domestic worker waiting outside, managed to open the

gate, as he had access to the property. “When the domestic worker got into the house, she found the house ransacked and the bodies of her employers on the fl oor in the study. The couple’s son was not at home when the domestic worker arrived and there was no sign of forced entry, although several items had been stolen.”

Ward 66 councillor, Ina Strijdom, said it was with great sadness that she heard about the incident. She said she hoped the police would arrest the criminals who committed the brutal murder and bring them to justice.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and neighbours of the couple.”

Meanwhile, the accused posted the follow-ing message on his Facebook profi le: “Hurt always comes back and that is what it is, hurt and pain and the death that goes with it, well I only take the lives that go with the pain, so here I go, taking the least number of lives.”

The message has since been removed. It was also found that the accused changed his profi le picture to one of him aiming a fi rearm.

The world’s eyes were focused on Pretoria as the Oscar murder trial kicked off on Monday at the North Gauteng High Court. Pis-torius shot and killed his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year.

His murder trial is expected to run until 20 March. Pisto-rius’ family will support him throughout his trial. The family released a statement on Saturday. According to Pistorius’s uncle, Arnold, the family and the legal team, would not be distracted by extraneous issues that had no bearing on, or relevance to, the legal process that must now be allowed to unfold. “We will not be commenting on any media reports, nor will we be engaging with the press on any issues that belong in court. The time for public commentary is over.”

Arnold said the focus was now entirely on the big trial. “We love Oscar, and believe in

him, and will be standing by him throughout the trial.” Among the 107 witnesses expected to enter the dock are Pistorius’ sister Aimee, his uncle Arnold, former police investigator Hil-ton Botha and residents of the Silver Woods Country Estate in Pretoria, where he lived. Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa will preside over the Pistorius murder trial. According to reports, Ma-sipa was a crime reporter whose stories often told of the indigni-ties of life under apartheid and went on to become an advocate in her late forties.

Swaar reën in Pretoria het Dinsdag chaos op die paaie veroorsaak met ongeveer 13 ongelukke wat in die Pretoria omgewing plaasgevind het en talle laagwaterbrûe wat oor-stroom het.

Volgens die metropolisiewoord-voerder, Isaac Mahamba, het drie ongelukke Dinsdagoggend op die N14 alleenlik plaasgevind, waarby ’n ambulans ook betrokke was.

Malcom Ralphs, algemene bestuurder van Emer-G-Med nooddienste, het gesê een van hul ambulanse was in ’n ongeluk betrokke nadat twee voertuie daar-teen gebots het. Die nooddienste se personeel het by ’n gebreekte voertuig op die middelman van die N14, naby Jeanlaan, gestaan toe die botsing gebeur.

Die bestuurder van ’n Mercedez Benz het vanuit ’n suidelike rigting gery en vermoedelik beheer oor die voertuig verloor, oor die pad geswaai en die ambulans teen die

agterkant getref. Die ambulans het voor aanko-

mende verkeer te lande gekom waar dit deur ’n Nissan X-trail getref is. Die slag het die ambulans op sy regtersy gerol.

Daar was twee personeellede in die ambulans en hulle is met ernstige kop- en nekbeserings, in ’n stabiele toestand, na die naaste hospitaal geneem, het Ralphs gesê.

Later die dag, is twee mans uit die Hennopsrivier naby Weststraat gered, het Johan Pieterse, woord-voerder van Tshwane-nooddienste bevestig.

Een van die mans was vir meer as ’n uur onder die Gautreinbrug op ’n geel plastiekversperring vasgekeer. ’n Reddingspan het ongeveer 11:00 met hul geel kajak tot die man se redding gekom. ’n Tweede persoon is daarna uit ’n boom gered. Die mans is vermoe-delik sluipslapers.

Tshwane-nooddienste het vier passasiers en die drywer uit hul dilemma gered. Die bus is later uit die rivier gesleep.

Inwoners langs die rivier wat deur die vloede geaffekteer is het by die munisipaliteit vir sandsakke gaan vra, maar niks was beskik-baar nie.

Water, water en nogmaals water het Centurion in chaos gelaat gedurende die week se aanhoudende reëns.

Swart rook het verlede week die lug gevul nadat ’n woonwa by ’n huis in Doringkloof met ’n harde slag ontplof het. Die gemeen-skap se fl inke optrede het die vlamme gou geblus.

Altus Booysen (26) het die ontploffi ng Dinsdag van sy huis in Sonjastraat, on-geveer twee blokke van waar die woonwa aan die brand geslaan het gehoor en dadelik ondersoek gaan instel. “’n Mens kon die rook ver sien,” het hy gesê.

Hy het met sy broer se bakkie en ’n brandbluser na die erf, op die hoek van Ma-honie- en Deodarstrate gejaag, en saam met mense wat reeds op die toneel was gehelp om die brand te blus.

“Party het bakke water aangedra en ander het die vuur met ’n tuinslang natge-spuit,” het Booysen gesê. Hy het in Amerika

geboer en dikwels daar gehelp om brande te blus as die nooddienste nie betyds opgedaag het nie.

“Die vlamme was ongeveer twee meter hoog en onsettend warm. Die woonwa het in die voortuin van die huis gestaan en was sigbaar van die straat af. Ek is verbaas geen skade is aan die garage, huis of lapa aangerig nie,” het hy gesê.

Dit is nie bekend of die eienaar tuis was nie.

Teen die tyd wat die brandweer op die to-neel verskyn het, was die vuur reeds geblus.

’n Woordvoerder van Tshwane-metro, Jo-han Pieterse, het gesê dit is moeilik om die oorsaak van die brand te bepaal. Daar word vermoed dat ’n gasbottel in die woonwa ontplof het.

Niemand is in die voorval beseer nie.

Police appealed to the Lyttleton community to beware of fake rental advertisements. According to the police, members of the community continue to fall victim to rental scams, and the perpetrators are proving dif-fi cult to catch. Police spokesperson, Warrant Offi cer Hero Gumbu, said the perpetrators asked their victims to deposit about R10 000 into a bank account before even viewing the rental property. He explained that after the deposit had been made, the supposed owners of the property, but in reality the criminals, could not be contacted. According to Gumbu, one victim reported an incident involving a house for rent in Jean Avenue.

“The woman deposited the money with-out viewing the place and when she went to the address, she found that the place was occupied by tenants who had been staying there for some time. We are appealing to members of the public not to discuss impor-tant money matters over the phone. They should meet with these people face to face and be able to identify them. Above all, they must not make deals verbally, they should sign the papers and view the place before

transferring money into any bank account,” said Gumbu.

A property owner in the area said scammers often advertised homes for rent using his name and that people should be aware of this, as it was identity theft.

Councillor Clive Napier of Ward 57 said: “I have received reports of people who were victims of these scammers. I have been a victim myself. Scammers operate at ATMs, through advertisements and via email. Many scams are quite convincing. It is often ex-tremely diffi cult to distinguish a scam from a genuine communication. Scams are often communicated in the name of offi cial insti-tutions such as banks and the South African Revenue Service.”

He said the problem was distinguishing a scam from a genuine communication.

“One needs to be extremely vigilant and, before accepting an offer, follow up with a phone call to check whether it is genuine or not. Further, our security establishment needs to develop new skills in tracking down scamsters and penalties should be drasti-cally increased, including heavy fi nes, jail sentences and deportations where foreigners are involved.”

Police have warned the public to beware of fake rental ads.

Wierda Park and the surrounding areas have turned into a hub for drugs, but the Community Policing Forum in Sector 3, in conjunction with the police, have decided to take the bull by the horns and tackle the problem head-on.

During an operation on Friday, drugs to the street value of R15 000 were confi scated and one suspect was arrested. The police found CAT, crystal meth, nyaope, marijuana and a new syringe. According to Captain Agnus Huma, the operation under the command of the Community Policing Sector 3 manager, Warrant Offi cer Nkatametse Mabilo, as-sisted in eradicating drugs.

She said that the 30-year-old suspect was arrested at a taxi rank in Centurion at around 14:45 after CPF members and the Wierdabrug police received a tip-off. The suspect tried to hide the drugs in his

socks. The chairperson of the CPF Sector 3,

Hannes du Buisson, said Wierda Park and its surroundings had been infi ltrated by drug dealers who targeted schoolchil-dren in particular. “We will not allow them to freely operate here and poison our children. We have declared war, and they can be sure sooner or later they will be caught. We will follow the court proceedings of arrested drug dealers closely and make sure they are sentenced appropriately.” Huma urged community members to continue working with the police to fi ght crime. The CPF request that any person with information about any criminal activities, including dealing and possession of drugs, contact the call centre on 072-837-5278 or 072-822-9312. All information will be handled with the highest confi dentiality. The CPF invites all community members to join its ranks and help make their area safer.

Fietsryers het weer teikens vir gewelddadige misdaad geword nadat twee voorvalle in een week by die polisie aangemeld is.

Twee vriende, waarvan een ’n sakeman en die ander ’n dosent verbonde aan die TUT, was die slagoffers van ’n gewelddadige aanranding nadat drie mans hulle naby Lime-stone Hill in Irene aangeval het. Die veld is langs Mainweg en die spoorlyne geleë.

Hans van Heerden (60) en Phil Oosthuizen (58) het Maandag om 16:30 op een van hul gereelde oefensessies uitgegaan. Drie mans het skielik vanuit die veld te voorskyn gekom en Van Heerden en Oosthuizen bestorm.

Oosthuizen het voor gery en daarin geslaag om eerste om te draai en weg te jaag. Van Heerden was kort op sy hakke. Twee van die rowers het op Oosthuizen afgestorm en een het agter Van Heerden aan gehardloop.

Van Heerden het probeer om die aanvaller in sy maag te skop, maar dié het sy voet gegryp en hom van sy fi ets afgetrek. Hy het so hard geval dat hy twee van sy ribbes ge-breek en ribspiere geskeur het. Die aanvaller het hom ook met ’n klip teen sy kop geslaan.

“Ek het gestoei totdat hy ’n mes uitgepluk het. Hy het gesê as ek nie wil dood gaan nie, moet ek op my maag draai. Intussen het ek gehoor hoe die ander twee aanvallers iets vir die ou by my in hul eie taal skreeu en hy het geantwoord dat hulle vir Phil moet dood-maak as hy nie saamwerk nie.”

Van Heerden het op sy maag gedraai en sy enkels is styf teen mekaar vasgemaak. Hy het Van Heerden se skoene en kouse uitgetrek, sy handskoene afgeruk en hom beveel om sy hemp, waarin sy selfoon was, ook uit te trek. Albei Van Heerden se hande is toe agter sy rug met sagte draad vasgemaak. Die aanvaller het daarna met sy fi ets ter waarde van ongeveer R12 000, skoene, kouse, bril, handskoene, selfoon en hemp verdwyn.

“Nadat ek besef het hy is weg, het ek begin vroetel om my voete los te maak. Intussen was ek die hele tyd bekommerd dat hulle gaan terugkom. Na ’n ruk het ek daarin ges-laag om my hande los te wikkel.”

Toe Van Heerden heeltemal los was, het hy na Oosthuizen gehardloop en na hom begin roep. “Ná die derde of vierde roep het hy geantwoord. Hy het vasgebind in die gras in die gras op maag gelê.”

Oosthuizen is met ’n klip oor sy kop geslaan, vasgebind en met ’n mes in sy maag gesteek. Sy skoene en fi ets, ter waarde van ongeveer R28 000, was weg. Die twee vriende het kaalvoet terug in die rigting van Irene gestap.

By die kruising van Alexander- en Main-strate het Van Heerden se seun Werner en dié se vriendin Jenny wat in die omgewing rond-gery het die twee mans opgemerk en hulle na Van Heerden se huis in Irene geneem. Van Heerden is na ’n dokter geneem wat sy polse en voete behandel het.

Oosthuizen, wat in die maag gesteek is, het ook mediese hulp ontvang. Geen organe is beskadig nie.

Die saak is by die Lyttelton polisie aange-meld, maar hulle het nog geen terugvoering van die polisie ontvang nie.

* In nog ’n voorval is twee fi etsryers verlede Donderdag deur vier mans aangeval, terwyl hulle ’n roete deur die veld langs Pierre van Ryneveldweg, naby die waterre-servoir, gery.

Lyttelton polisiewoordvoerder adjudant-offi sier Hero Gumbu het gesê: “Die aan-vallers het uit die bosse verskyn en messe op die fi etsryers gerig. Hulle hande is met draad agter hul rûe vasgebind en hulle van hul besittings besteel. Niemand is teen druktyd oor die voorval in hegtenis geneem nie. Andre Kittshof, waarnemende voorsitter van Lyttelton Sektor 3 GPF, word talle fi etsryers gereeld in die omgewing aangeval.

Boetie, the yellow mongoose, puts a smile on the people’s faces every morning when he walks in at a car dealership in Cen-turion and asks for his breakfast. Botha Makama, one of the staff members at the dealership, takes a biscuit, breaks it into pieces and then holds small pieces gently between his fi ngers for Boetie to eat every day.

“He only allows me to feed him. He even comes when I call him,” Makama said. Since last year, Boetie has been an addition to the dealership family. No one is quite sure exactly when he became a regular visitor, but the general consensus is about six months ago.

Every morning he greets the staff members with his friendly, little eyes and a mouth that looks as though he is smil-ing. He is tame, and even dares to walk into the stores. Makama gives Boetie his snack, which he eats under one of the vehicles in the showroom. But when it comes to food, Boetie can be demanding too. For instance, he will not eat bread unless it has been spread with butter or

peanut butter. He prefers cheese and small pieces of meat and he loves biscuits – especially those with creamy lemon icing that he can lick off the cookie. His timing is always impeccable, and he never misses a meal, whether it is breakfast or lunch.

“The fact that he is so tame could also spell danger for him. We are afraid someone could hurt him or drive over him,” said Makama. “He has become part of the family and has a special place in our hearts.” Boetie has his own routine, but everyone knows him so well that they become worried if he does not make an appearance by 07:15 in the morning. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, he wanders around, humouring everyone in the store. Even the customers adore him. Some eagerly take pictures of him with their cell phones, while others get a fright at the unusual sight.

When Boetie is full, he takes what is left over from his meal to the open veld next to the dealership, where it is believed his family lives. Staff members say they have previously seen three other yellow mongooses in the veld, but Boetie is the only one that makes regular visits.

As ’n heeltydse praktiserende fi sionoom in Suid-Afrika met reeds meer as sewe jaar ervaring, het Maré in haar beroepslewe meestal met mense gewerk en besef dat effektiewe kommunikasie van kardinale belang is om goeie verhoudings te bou.

Maré het persoonlikheidsprofi ele van ver-skeie Suid-Afrikaanse vermaaklikheidskun-stenaars en ander beroemdes saamgestel en het bekendheid verwerf deur TV- en radio-onderhoude en verskeie koerant- en tydskrifartikels. In haar boek het sy die lewe van glanspersoonlikhede, naamlik akteur Gavin van den Berg, radio-omroeper Amore Bekker en TV-aanbieder en aktrise Shemane Harris blootgestel.

Maré se belangstelling in fi sionomie het ongeveer agt jaar gelede begin nadat sy ’n praatjie gehoor het wat haar nuuskierigheid geprikkel het. “Ek was eers baie skepties oor

die konsep dat jou gelaatstrekke eienskappe oor jou persoonlikheid kan verklap, maar nadat ek heelwat navorsing op die internet gedoen het en baie boeke oor fi sionomie gelees het, het ek die teorieë op mense wie ek ken toegepas en besef hoe akkuraat dit is,” het Maré gesê.

“Die resultate was ongeloofl ik en daarna was daar geen keer nie. Ek het my werk as grafi ese kunstenaar bedank en Face Profi le South Africa gestig,” het sy bygevoeg.

Dit het haar ongeveer drie jaar geneem om die boek te skryf. Haar grootste uitda-ging in die skryfproses was om ’n balans te vind tussen persoonlike verpligtinge, om haar sakebedrywighede aan die gang te hou, en om tyd te maak om te skryf. “Ek het on-geloofl ike respek vir skrywers gekry en haal my hoef af vir dié wat dit heeltyds doen,” het sy gesê.

’n Nege-jarige seun van Centurion se goed-hartigheid het daartoe gelei dat ’n verlore selfoon weer terug aan sy eienaar besorg is.

Franco du Preez het verlede week ’n selfoon in die middel van Jeanlaan opgetel terwyl hy en sy ma op pad na ’n DVD-winkel was in haar kar. Hy het aanvanklik gedink dit is sy eie Blackberry wat verlede jaar weggeraak het, maar toe hy die selfoon in sy hand hou, het hy besef dis nie syne nie.

Die selfoon was nog aangeskakel en Franco het sy ma gevra om die eienaar daarvan op te spoor. Na ’n paar oproepe het sy ma, Christy, uitgevind die selfoon behoort aan Lynette van der Merwe en het haar gekontak.

Van der Merwe het vertel dat sy haar selfoon op haar motor se dak vergeet het terwyl sy haar kleindogter in haar stoeltjie op die agterste sitplek vasgemaak het.

“Ek het eers later die dag besef my selfoon is skoonveld. Ek het Vodacom gebel en die foon is binne minute geswartlys. Maandagoggend het ek egter ’n boodskap op my werkfoon ontvang van ’n vriendelike vrou wat gevra het dat ek haar terugskakel in verband met my verlore selfoon. Groot was my verbasing toe ek haar bel en sy my vertel dat haar seun my selfoon in Jeanlaan gesien en opgetel het,” het Van der Merwe gesê.

Sy beskou Franco as ’n seun met integ-riteit wat van die wêreld ’n fantastiese plek kan maak.

“Ons het mekaar by die Dros in Lenchen-laan ontmoet en ek is begroet met die trotse glimlaggie van my ridder op sy wit perd en die verlore selfoon in sy hand,” het Van der Merwe met blydskap vertel.

Residents of Lyttelton are relieved that the re-pair work in Pretorius Avenue will soon come to an end after almost a year’s inconvenience of having part of the street closed. The date of the completion and opening of Pretorius Avenue in Lyttelton, where the sinkhole occurred, is on schedule and will be fi nished by the end of May, said a Tshwane metro offi cial, Ashika Sudu, the deputy director of geological and geotechnical engineering management, during a meeting with the com-munity of Lyttelton on Tuesday morning.

A few offi cials met with residents and the principal of Lyttelton Primary to discuss the progress that had been made at the construc-tion site where the sinkhole occurred in April 2012. Wilco Mostert, acting principal of Lyttelton Primary School, said he was satisfi ed with the outcome of the meeting and response. “All my questions were answered and they kept their promises,” he said. “I am quite surprised by the progress that has been made – I thought that it would take longer.”

The school was affected by the sinkhole when one of the tennis courts fell into the hole. Mostert said the hole had inconven-ienced the school, since learners did not have enough courts for netball and tennis. “It will make a huge difference to the pupils’ sporting activities when the court has been repaired,”

It was time to say goodbye to an era as the last drive-in cinema in South Africa closed on Friday. Watching movies under the stars in a classic car is now a thing of the past. After providing the public with almost 14 years of enter-tainment, the Menlyn Park Drive-in shut down the lights and projectors and closed its doors on 28 February for good.

There were mixed feelings during the last screening, as some people felt Preto-ria lost a special icon while others saw the rationality of closing down due to the fact that the popularity of the drive-in has declined over the years.

Ceejay Els said he had been to the drive-in a few times as a child and it was never very busy.

Pieter Odendaal was of the opinion that the drive-in was a place where memories were made and it was sad that people would not be able to return to the place where they met for the fi rst time, where they had their fi rst date or where they got engaged.

Odendaal’s parents, who have been married for 54 years, went to the drive-in as a young couple.

In keeping with tradition, Odendaal took his girlfriend, Ané Lourens, to the drive-in on Friday for the fi rst time, but unfortunately it was also the last.

The drive-in cinema opened its doors in October 2000 by showing Bless the

Child, a horror movie starring Kim Basinger.

There were 75 cars hooked up to the sound system. In the last screening week, Gravity and We Are the Millers were shown on the big screen.

As a special service to the commu-nity, entrance was free of charge during the last week.

Vehicles piled up in Menlyn Park’s parking area as people wanted to experi-ence the nostalgic moments of the drive-in for the very last time.

As reported earlier in the month, Andrea de Witt, the marketing manager of Menlyn Park, said the main reason for the closure was due to technical constraints, as all fi lms were now in a digital format, which meant obtaining old 35mm fi lm had become increasingly diffi cult. The drive-in held 8 736 shows with 1 005 088 people watching over the years.

The Velskoen Drive-in in Randburg closed its doors in June 2012, which left the Menlyn Park Drive-in as the only drive-in cinema of its kind in South Africa.

Previously, there were some 50 drive-ins countrywide, which attracted thousands of cinema-goers with picnic baskets packed with goodies.

It is uncertain what will become of the space left by the drive-in.

Digters bring hulde aan Koos du Plessis

Digters en musikante het Donderdagaand by die Railway Café in Irene bymekaar gekom om ‘n huldeblyk te lewer aan die legendariese digter en liedjieskrywer Koos du Plessis, wat op 15 Januarie 1984 in ‘n motorongeluk oorlede is.

David Steyn, oftewel Karel Kopbeen (sy verhoognaam), het drie jaar gelede die leisels by sy vriend en mentor, Andries van Pretoria, ook bekend as Abjater Ronkedoor, oorgeneem om die Dowe Digters uit te brei. Dowe Digters is aanvanklik as ’n Facebook-groep deur Van Pretoria gestig, maar het sedertdien sy plek op Pretoria se geleent-heidskalender gevind. Hulle tree die laaste Donderdag van elke maand by Railway Café in Irene op.

Die idee is om ’n platform vir musikante en digters te skep waar hulle hulself en hul werk kan uitleef. “Dowe Digters sinspeel op die konsep dat kunstenaars ‘n geleentheid gegun is waar hul werk nie op dowe ore val nie,” het Steyn gesê.

Dit was die groep se eerste byeenkoms vanjaar. “Ek dink Koos is die mees promi-nente voorbeeld waarvoor Dowe Digters staan omdat hy digkuns sowel as lirieke in sy werk gekombineer het,” het Steyn gesê. “Ek dink dis die beste tema om 2014 mee af te skop.”

Langs die spoorweë in Irene het die klanke van kitaarsnare en poëtiese woorde deur die nag getoer.

Gideon Joubert het eerste ‘n gedig wat hy aan Koos opgedra het, gelees. As jong seun was Joubert al ’n groot aanhanger van Koos. “Sy hele wese het in my geprikkel. Toe ek vir die eerste keer na sy lirieke geluister het was ek skielik vry in myself, en na al die jare inspireer sy werk my steeds.”

Die aand het geëindig met Pretoria-musiekgroep Die See wat hul eie weergawes van Koos du Plessis se liedjies gespeel het. Hul unieke klank het nuwe lewe gegee aan ’n geliefde digter en sanger wat in die gees altyd saam met die Afrikaanse kultuur sal leef.

The South African Cancer Association (Can-sa) raised R105 000 at the Cansa Shavathon held at Centurion Mall on Saturday.

The event was organised by Salo Mathen and her team as a tribute to Mathen’s daugh-ter, Shani, who died 13 years ago from brain cancer. Shani would have been 25 years old on 1 March. From the amount raised, R5 000 came from the most expensive haircut.

Soraya Hathey-Ernest challenged mall-goers to donate money to Cansa and in return she would shave her hair. Within half an hour, Hathey-Ernest managed to raise R5 000. “It is probably the most expensive haircut that I will ever undergo,” she said.

Hathey-Ernest, a local artist, said she lost many loved ones to cancer and when the fi nal amount was announced, she felt overwhelmed.

Her daughter, Nadia Ernest, supported her in this cause and said she was very proud of her mother. Cancer patient Juan Neethling was joined by his brother-in-law, Dicky Carstens and his son CJ to support the cause. Neethling was diagnosed with a brain tumour two years ago, for which he has been receiving treatment. However, he was recently told that the tumour had become more aggressive and he started treatment on Monday.

A South African Maxus service representa-tive, Coenie Booysen, won the title of ‘bril-liant skill of maintenance’ and was crowned runner-up in the fi nal of the 2013 Maxus Global After-Sales Skills Competition held in China in November.

After a gruelling elimination round over a period of six months in nine regions, the more than 200 competitors from all over the world took part in the fi nal round in Shangai, China on 5 November. Technicians from South Africa, Australia, Mauritius and Malaysia represented the overseas contin-gent. The competition has attracted over 200 entries, including Chinese competitors, who also took part in the domestic championship.

“It was an amazing experience to com-pete against technicians from other parts of the world where Maxus vehicles have been available much longer than here in South Africa,” said Booysen. He works as a ser-vice representative at Maxus’s head offi ce in Gauteng.

The competition simulates real service conditions, including detailed processes such as pre-inspection, maintenance and ser-vicing. Competitors had to inspect vehicles, carry out scheduled servicing and mainte-nance, and locate and repair certain faults.

Maxus vehicles, now manufactured in China after the British company was taken over in 2009 by the largest Chinese

For 2013, Maserati reported a 148% increase in shipments to 15 400 vehicles, mainly attributed to the success of the new Quattroporte and Ghibli models launched during the year. For the Quat-troporte, which was released in March, shipments totalled 7 800 units. For the Ghibli, a total of 2 900 units were shipped between the launch in October and year-end. Combined shipments for the GranTurismo and GranCabrio were in line with 2012 at 4 700 units for the year.

All markets contributed positively to the signifi cant year-on-year increase. The USA remained the brand’s number one market, with shipments up 138% over the previous year to 6 900 units. China, the brand’s second largest market, recorded the highest percentage increase with shipments up 334% to 3 800 units. Even in Europe, where economic conditions remained diffi cult, shipments were up 133% to 2 500 units on the back of the contribution of the new models. Results were also strong for the Asia-Pacifi c region (excluding China) and the Middle East, which registered increases of 52% (1 300 vehicles) and 81% (750 vehi-cles), respectively. Revenues totaled €1

659 million for the year – an increase of 120% compared to 2012.

Maserati closed 2013 with a full-year trading profi t of €171m, or a 10,3% mar-gin, representing a €114m increase over the previous year (€57m in 2012).

EBIT, which included a €65m write-back of previously capitalised R&D-related to a new model, the development of which has now been switched to a more technically advanced and brand-appropriate platform, totaled €106m. The year-on-year improvement refl ected the signifi cant increase in volumes.

Maserati’s fourth quarter revenues totalled €776m, representing 47% of revenues for the full year and nearly four times the Q4 2012 level, with a signifi cant contribution from the newly-launched Ghibli. Trading profi t was €123m for the quarter, an increase of €110m compared to Q4 2012. EBIT, which included the above-mentioned unusual charge, was €58m.

The new Nissan Impendulo.

Nissan will re-enter the taxi industry in South Africa with the launch of the all-new Nissan NV350 Impendulo, which will go on sale in March this year. The new 16-seater model has been built to comply with South Africa’s Taxi Industry’s regulations and benefi ts from an extensive South African infl uence throughout its development.

The new model succeeds the legendary Nissan E20 of the 1990s – a vehicle that still carries a strong heritage with local taxi operators almost 20 years after the last E20 was sold. The new NV350 Impendulo Taxi, whose name is also unique to the South Af-rican market, has already begun forging new bonds with local Taxi Association members who have featured extensively in its devel-opment, both in its engineering and its name. The innovative Name to Fame Game took place in 2013 and invited members of the Taxi Industry to submit ideas for the name of the NV350 in South Africa.

Honda has released images of its 2014 Civic World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) works car, taken during its fi rst test session in Aragon, Northern Spain earlier this year. At Honda’s annual motorsport press conference, held in Tokyo, Takanobu Ito, the president and CEO of the Honda Motor Company also outlined Honda’s ambitions in the championship this year.

He said: “We achieved four victories and

captured the manufacturer’s title last season in the WTCC, which was our fi rst year of full participation. In this season, we will strive to win the double title for drivers and manufacturers with a total of four machines, including a works team and two private teams.”

Under the banner of the Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team, Honda will enter two works cars in 2014, driven by Gabriele Tarquini and Tiago Monteiro and run by JAS Motorsport.

Private outfi ts Zeng Motorsport and Pro-team Racing will also compete for honours with two further Civics, driven by Hungary’s Norbert Michelisz and the Moroccan Mehdi Bennani respectively.

As long as there are landlords and tenants, there are going to be rental disputes. Tenants may believe that the landlord isn’t doing his bit to maintain the property, while the land-lord feels that he constantly has to attend to minor problems that the tenant himself should fi x. The tenant may not believe that paying the rent a few days late is the end of the world, while the landlord believes that the rent should be paid before anything else. The list goes on and on, and while some arguments are fairly easy to resolve, others aren’t and could even end up in court.

The laws that govern rental properties have changed in recent years and, while some may disagree, many now believe that tenants enjoy more rights than the actual owner. A landlord can no longer, for exam-ple, simply evict a defaulting tenant. There are strict legal guidelines that apply and certain steps have to be followed in order to remove an erring tenant. Another issue of contention is deposits. Tenants sometimes take the view that the deposit can be utilised as the last month’s rent. This is not the case and the tenant must pay the required amount on a monthly basis, unless otherwise agreed with the landlord, until they move out. On

the other hand, there are landlords who come up with every excuse as to why they should retain the deposit. These people often maintain that the full deposit is required in order to rectify damage that the tenant has caused to the property concerned. While it is true that a landlord may use deposit monies for this purpose, it does not give him carte blanche to withhold the entire amount, and receipts must be supplied which clearly indicate the amount that is spent to rectify the faults.

The situation often descends into chaos when a proper inspection is not carried out before the tenant moves in. The importance of conducting a thorough inspection by the owner (or his agent) and the tenant before occupation cannot be over-emphasised. All faults, both big and small, must be noted and this list must be referred to again once the tenant decides to move out.

Likewise, it is highly recommended that a tenant insist that the landlord (or his agent) conduct the outgoing inspection in his pres-ence as soon as possible once the premises have been vacated. Landlords need to note that there is such a thing as fair wear and tear and take this factor into consideration.

In this year’s National Budget, the minis-ter of fi nance, Pravin Gordhan’s emphasis on controlling state expenditure while still placing a priority on encouraging growth, job creation and infrastructural expenditure is welcomed, said Dr Andrew Golding, CEO of the Pam Golding property group.

He added that from a property market perspective, it was disappointing to note that there was no property-specifi c tax relief or schemes introduced that could help home ownership generally, but in particu-

lar fi rst-time home ownership. “However, new spatial plans for cities, the upgrading of informal settlements, increased social infrastructure and improved public transport, coupled with the announcement of 216 000 houses to be built, is positive news,” said Golding. He approved of the introduction of an integrated city development grant to the tune of R814m over the medium term, which he said would help strengthen long-term city planning and encourage private investment in urban development.

The controversial e-toll system is likely to result in a decrease in property values in neighbourhoods on toll routes, according to Marina Constas, a specialist sectional title attorney and a director at BBM Attorneys.

“By and large, suburban dwellers have not put too much thought into the lateral implications of the e-tolling system,” she commented. “In fact, the impact will be im-mense. Property prices of both freestanding homes and those in sectional title devel-opments on toll routes will be negatively affected. Urban migration, which could alter the Gauteng residential property landscape, and changes in urban development patterns are issues that we should be considering.”

Constas said that in overseas studies, traffi c through residential areas resulted in a decline in property values on toll routes.

“It is not diffi cult to imagine that busi-nesses will want to cut their transport costs by steering their drivers onto the back routes of tranquil suburbia. Adding to the problem is the fact that local government will be

unable to deal with the demands that are set to be placed on suburban roads as a result of the e-tolls,” she contended.

“Any property owner who has ever at-tended a ward meeting would know that our local municipalities are ill-equipped to deal with the normal wear and tear on our roads, never mind increased traffi c volumes and the facilitation of heavier vehicles.”

She predicted that we would also be likely to see an increase in the accident rate on once quiet suburban streets.

Property developers, too, will take e-tolls into account when planning projects.

“Developers will, in all likelihood, give far more consideration to the issues sur-rounding e-tolls before choosing a piece of land on which to develop either a sectional title building or a cluster scheme. The e-toll system will, therefore, change urban development patterns. E-toll’s implications are much more far-reaching than the aver-age disgruntled motorist realises,” Constas concluded.

Excellent schools in the area are a big driver of this trend, and families with univer-sity-age children are also targeting the area to allow those studying at the University of Pretoria to travel to campus independently.”

She added that well-educated buyers earning good salaries were opting for homes in these areas, where the peace and quiet of larger, detached homes on big stands, security and reduced highway travelling

contributed to a healthier lifestyle. “What is remarkable, however, is that such young buyers are earning big enough salaries to qualify for the bigger bonds required to fi nance these properties.”

Amputee Reuben van Niekerk (29) from Centurion will be teaming up with Dagmar Muhlbauer (37) from Ballito for this year’s Absa Cape Epic as team Driepoot Toyota. The legendary mountain bike stage race, in its eleventh year, will take place from 23 to 30 March and see riders complete 718km of intense riding with 14 850m of climbing.

Van Niekerk, who is self-em-ployed in the publishing industry, will be participating in his second Absa Cape Epic this year. “I’ve had my eye on the Absa Cape Epic for a couple of years. I worked as a vol-unteer at the race in 2012 in order to secure a spot. Once I confi rmed my entry, Toyota came on-board with sponsorship and they once again helped us in 2014.”

Muhlbauer, an emergency care practitioner, added: “I was asked in January to ride with Reuben, whose original partner could no longer do the event due to other commit-

ments.” Van Niekerk and Muhlbauer unfortunately do not train together very often, as they live in differ-ent provinces, but John Wakefi eld coaches them both.

“I had to change my teammate early this year as my original team-mate, Dane Wilson, was called up to do national duty at the Para-cycling Track World Championships in Mexico. It was a natural decision to then ask Dagmar, as we’ve raced to-gether before, and we have the same coach. This makes it easy for us to match our training and for John to monitor that we’re both on the same page in terms of our fi tness,” said Van Niekerk. Muhlbauer believes that the most important ingredient to completing the Absa Cape Epic successfully is consistent training with good nutrition. Van Niekerk, a below-the-knee amputee, added: “I think it is a combination of things – fi rstly, you need to be prepared to spend long days in the saddle for

consecutive days. You also need to prepare for every eventuality in terms of your equipment and you need to have a partner that under-stands you and your abilities. You both need to compliment each other well, as the team is only as strong as what you are together. Oh, and you have to have a sense of humour.”

Van Niekerk reckoned the route was an epic route. “I had the op-portunity to ride parts of it on the Day-Trippers training camp in Janu-ary and believe it will be a true test of a mountain biker. The route has everything from river crossings to rocky climbs and spectacular single track descents. It’s going to be tough, but it’s also going to be a lot of fun. I have put a lot of focus on training for the Absa Cape Epic and would then like to carry this fi tness through to a few other stage races. We’ll be riding the Panorama Tour and Sani2C and are still looking at a few other races thereafter.”

Amputee competes in Cape Epic

Die Bulls het egter strate beter gevaar as die vorige twee weke en die verande-ringe wat aan hul span aangebring is vir die wedstryd het deur die bank gewerk. Dit was veral Francois Hougaard op skrumskakel wat uiteindelik daarin geslaag het om sy swak vorm af te skud en een van sy beste wedstryde in twee jaar te speel, wat ’n groot verskil gemaak het.

Voeg daarby die puik spel van die Bulls se nuwe losskakel, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, en die wenresep word al hoe duideliker.

die Leeus kan voortbou, sal hy sy loopbaan in Pretoria kan afsluit as een van die helde van Loftus, nadat hy jare lank moes rondswerf op soek na erkenning vir sy talent.

Potgieter het sy rugby oorkant Loftus Versfeld by die Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool geleer, waar hy in 2002 gematrikuleer het. Daarna is hy Potchefstroom toe waar hy ’n jaar lank vir die Luiperds se junior spanne gespeel het.

Die volgende jaar was hy terug in Pretoria, waar hy tot in 2007 aange-bly het en die Blou Bulle en Bulls op verskeie vlakke verteenwoordig het.

Hierna het hy twee jaar in Bloem-fontein gaan woon om vir die Chee-tahs te speel, net om in 2010 terug te keer na die Bulls vir een seisoen. Daarna het hy ’n jaar lank vir die Sharks gespeel, voordat hy van 2012 af tot ’n paar weke gelede in Frank-ryk vir spanne soos Bayonne en Dux uitgedraf het. Hy is einde Januarie vanjaar deur die Bulls by Dux uitge-koop om as losskakel te kom uithelp en nou lyk dit of hy hier kort voor sy 30ste verjaardag uiteindelik die er-kenning in Pretoria kan kry wat hom lankal toekom.

Potgieter en Hougaard se goeie

vertonings teen die Leeus is ook moontlik gemaak deur die goeie spel van die Bulls se voorspelers, wat veral in die vaste fasette stewig vertoon het. Die lynstane was ’n bron van goeie balbesit, terwyl hulle veral in die eerste helfte ook nie te sleg in die skrums gevaar het nie. By die afbreekpunte is daar egter nog werk om te doen, want die Leeus het daar koning gekraai.

Die Bulls se voorspelers was egter goed genoeg om aan Hougaard en Potgieter die geleentheid te gee om in die gure reënweer waarin die wedstryd gespeel is met goeie aan-vallende skopwerk vorentoe te speel en momentum te bou.

Die Leeus kon in die nat toestande nooit werklik aan die gang kom nie, veral omdat hulle gewoonlik baie staatmaak op hul vermoë om die bal rond te gooi in teenaanvalle. Die nat bal was egter vir hulle ’n terugslag en hulle het gesukkel om ’n plan-B in wer king te stel.

Vir die Bulls het Jan Serfontein gedruk, terwyl Jacques-Louis Potgi-eter met ’n doelskop, vyf strafdoele en ’n skepdoel geslaag het. Stefan Watermeyer en Willie Wepener het twee identiese drieë vir die Leeus gedruk, nadat hulle albei skoppe van die Bulls afgestorm het.


Die Universiteit van Pretoria se High Performance Centre (HPC) het onlangs die name van 57 atlete en ander sport-manne en –vroue bekendgemaak wat deur dié sentrum geborg en ondersteun sal word op pad na die Olimpiese Spele van 2016.

Die HPC se hoof uitvoerende beampte, Toby Sutcliffe, het by die geleentheid waartydens die name van die atlete bekendgemaak is weer herhaal dat hulle in 2016 mik na sewe Olimpiese medaljes uit dié groep.

Die helfte van al die medaljes wat Suid-Afrika by die Olimpiese Spele van 2012 gewen het, is ingepalm deur sportmanne wat deur die HPC onder hande geneem is en dit is een van die

redes waarom Sutcliffe glo dat hulle ten minste sewe medaljes kan wen by die volgende spele in Brasilië.

Sutcliffe het aan die media gesê dat hulle glo dat die Tuks HPC se per-soneel oor al die nodige kwalifi kasies en ervaring beskik om hierdie doelwit te bereik.

Volgens hom stel hulle aanhoudend hoër standaarde vir hul sportmanne en hy glo ook die hoëprestasie omgewing en die kultuur van kampioene wat hulle vir hul sportmanne aanleer, sal bydra tot die prestasies van die geborgde atlete.

Die 57 sportmanne wat by die Tuks HPC sal voorberei vir 2016 sluit 23 atlete, 13 roeiers, sewe swemmers, ses judokas, vier driekamp atlete, twee gholfspelers, een kanoovaarder en een bergfi etsryer in.

Die Universiteit van Pretoria (Tukkies), se rugbyspan was die laaste onoorwonne span in vanjaar se Varsitybeker toernooi, maar na Maandagaand se nederlaag van 0-18 teen die Universiteit van Noordwes (Pukke) is hulle die status én hul eerste plek op die punteleer kwyt.

Hoewel rugby een van die min sport-soorte is wat basies in enige weerstoestande gespeel kan word, was Maandagaand se weer beslis nie die ideale omstandighede waarin ’n mens die toernooi se twee top-spanne in aksie sou wou sien nie.

Dit het reeds Maandagoggend in Pretoria begin reën, maar kort voor die begin van die wedstryd wou dit lyk of die weer effens opklaar. Maar, die twee spanne het skaars aangetree vir die sing van die volkslied, soos wat dit tradisioneel met Varsitybeker-wedstryde gedoen word, toe stortreën weer begin uitsak.

Die swaar reën het bykans die hele wedstryd voortgeduur en die toestande het beslis ’n groot invloed op die uitslag van die kragmeting gehad.

Vooraf het rugbyliefhebbers hul lippe af-gelek vir ’n besondere stryd tussen die twee spanne wat hulself tot dusver onderskei het as die gunstelinge in vanjaar se toernooi.

Op ’n droë veld sou daar beslis ook kookwater rugby gespeel kon word, want albei spanne het die vermoë om totale rugby te speel, wat ’n skouspel tot gevolg kon hê.

Weens die reën en gevolglike sopnat veld het die wedstryd toe uiteindelik in ’n heel ander soort skouspel ontaard. Skielik was tienmanrugby die enigste verstandige opsie en dis hier waar die skaal in die Pukke se guns geswaai het.

Hoewel Tukkies oor ’n baie wedywe-rende vaste vyf beskik, is hulle Maandag-aand oorskadu deur die inklimspel van hul teenstanders van Potchefstroom. Dit was veral die spel van die Pukke se twee slotte, Francois Robbertse en Daniël Jordaan, wat beïndruk het. Hulle het teen twee baie goeie slotte van Tukkies gespeel, maar in die reën het hulle die twee groot name oorskadu. Dan was daar ook die Pukke se woelige lostrio, met Rhyk Welgemoed aan die voorpunt, wat nie ’n tree teruggestaan het vir die tuisspan se manne nie.

Die afwesigheid van Roelof Smit was beslis ’n gevoelige slag vir die tuisspan. Hy moes die veld ná net ses minute verlaat en dis bekend dat Tukkies se sukses in die verlede baie met sy vorm te doen gehad het. Sonder Smit op die veld het die Pukke na hartelus besit by die afbreekpunte omgekeer. Dit het Tukkies doodgesmoor, veral weens die omstandighede waarin die wedstryd gespeel is.

Die Pukke het albei hul drieë behaal deur dryfspel waartydens hulle die bal puik onder beheer gehou het in die nat toestande, terwyl Tukkies telkens hanteer-foute gemaak het as hulle dieselfde taktiek probeer het.

Agter ’n pak voorspelers wat

Tukkies se fl ank, Rudolph Smith, het hard gewerk as baldraer om aan sy span te probeer momentum gee in Maandagaand se Varsitybeker-wedstryd teen die Pukke, wat in gietende reën gespeel is. was Maandagaand goud werd vir die Pukke.

Hoewel Tian Schoeman van Tukkies glad nie sleg gespeel het nie, was Welthag-en se afgeronde vertoning in die moeilike toestande ’n openbaring. Hy het baie goed kop gehou en sy taktiese skopwerk was ’n getuigskrif oor waarom hy op 19 al vir die junior Bokkies uitgedraf het.

Die Pukke is dus aan die opmars na die halfeindstryd met die twee spanne onder aan die punteleer wat vir hulle wag in hul laaste twee ligabepalings.

Tukkies is nou tweede op die punteleer, maar drie spanne blaas in hul nekke en hulle sal alles moet uithaal op hul laaste twee ligabepalings teen NMMU en die Ma-ties te wen.

Tukkies se agtsteman en kaptein, Reniel Hugo, konsentreer so al wat hy kan om ’n lynstaanbal in die reënweer te vang in Maandagaand se Varsitybekerwedstryd teen die Pukke. Die Pukke se voorspelers het egter stelselmatig beheer oorgeneem om die grondslag te lê vir die mane van Potchef-stroom se oorwinning.


Two local players from Pretoria were the outstanding heroes in the fi nal of the ICC Under 19 World Cup 2014 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday when the young South Africans beat Pakistan by six wickets to become world champions.

Corbin Bosch fi rst terrorised the batting of Pakistan when he took four wickets for only 15 runs in their innings and then Aiden Markram, the South African captain and opening batsman, helped his team to pass the Pakistanis’ total in the 43th over with an excellent unbeaten innings of 66 runs.

Bosch was named man of the match in the fi nal, while Markram received the honour of being named man of the series. Although Markram scored the third most runs in the tournament, he was the only player to score two centuries during this tournament.

The other local player in the team, Driaan Bruwer, did not get a chance to bat in the fi nal. South Africa won their group stage easily by beating the West Indies, Zimba-bwe and Canada. They then went on to beat Afghanistan in the quarter-fi nal and Australia in the semi-fi nal.

With their undefeated record and excel-lent attacking cricket, South Africa was one

of the favourites from the beginning. Paki-stan was a major threat, but when Bosch and his bowling mates restricted them to only 131 runs, the writing was on the wall for the Pakistanis.

Bosch is the son of the late Tertius Bosch, who played for the then Northern Trans-vaal in the eighties and early nineties and for South Africa during the country’s fi rst participation in a senior World Cup in 1992. Bosch Senior was a dentist and he studied at the University of Pretoria when he played cricket for the Northern Transvaal.

He later moved to Durban, where he practiced as a dentist, but he died in 2000 after he was diagnosed with Guillain–Barré Syndrome. Corbin Bosch joined the Cricket Academy at the University of Pretoria last year.

He also plays for the Northern Cricket Union’s u.19 team and Saturday’s fi nal in the u.19 World Cup was his tenth in the colours of the national u.19 team. Just like his late father, he is a fast-medium seamer.

Aiden Markram was born and bred in Pre-toria. He comes from Centurion, but attended Pretoria Boys High. He is also a member of the Northerns Cricket Union’s u.19 team and he is regarded as a future star batsman for the Titans. His selection as captain of the

South African u.19 team for this tournament was quite a surprise, but eventually he led his side by example and with distinction.

The coach of the South African u.19 team, Ray Jennings, also played for the Northern

Transvaal at the end of his cricket career in the early nineties. He is regarded as one of the best wicket-keepers that the country ever produced. He also achieved big success as a coach after his playing days.
