As bad economic news pummels us from all sides itis important to take note of those situations that offerpossibilities and remind us what working together canachieve. The past ten months in the Heritage Councilhave seen a number of projects emerge as fantastic rolemodels for community involvement around the country.The most recent example was the launch of theJulianstown Village Design Statement which is an actionplan, involving all stakeholders in the village, in planningfor its future. It takes account of what is unique anddistinctive about the village, looking to good designpractice to see how best to develop the village.It involved young and old thinking about the basicaspects of village planning that heretofore had been thepreserve of the public servants.

Julianstown has a population of 600 and is locatedin the East of County Meath. It is surrounded by thelarger towns of Drogheda and Bettystown which meansthe village is often used as a route to avoid the tolls.Julianstown is a village with unique heritage andcharacteristics. Unfortunately it also suffers the sameissues as many villages and towns across Ireland.Julianstown suffers from traffic problems, derelictbuildings in the heart of the village, poorly siteddevelopment on the fringes, lack of amenities forcyclists and walkers, children unable to walk or cycle toschool and a lack of local services that help enhance agreater sense of community such as small shops andcafe. The Village Design Statement engaged with allaspects of village life in a holistic way which in turn willfeed into the Local Area Plan providing the residentswith an influential say in the Planning process.

The residents of Julianstown identified the actionsthey want to see happen over the next decade that willshape the look and feel of their village and enhance theirquality of life. They have decided to play a role indetermining their own future and that of their fellowresidents. For too long the value of good design,consideration of the resident’s needs and the potentialof a place’s heritage assets were ignored to thedetriment of most of us. Now, perhaps in the vacuumof the ‘tiger’, it is a good time to approach ourcommunities with a bit more humility and thought onwhat makes a village or town work. At the launch of theirVillage Design Statement, the residents of Julianstownexpressed their certitude that participating and shapingthe outcome of their village was a lot more satisfyingthan being ‘rolled’ over.

National Heritage Week 201120-28th AugustAs we all know the early bird catches theworm and it’s never too soon to startplanning or at least thinking about events forthe coming year. However if, like many of oursoon to be sleepy friends in the garden,you’re more focused on hibernating indoorswith hot drinks and woolly jumpers then allyou need do for now is note the 20th to the28th of August as next years dates forNational Heritage Week.

Before we jump ahead we must say a bigbig big thank you to everyone who took partin National Heritage Week this year, from thewonderful organisers to everyone whoattended events and those who took part inour photo competition. 2010 proved to be themost successful Heritage Week yet with 1300events taking place (an increase of 30% on2009) and almost all organisers reported anincrease in attendance; a true testament tothe enduring and growing interest andenthusiasm we Irish have in our heritage.

As National Coordinators of the weekthere is no rest for the wicked and we arealready thinking about next year. We hopethat with your help we can repeat andexceed the success of 2010 in 2011.For now though, like our furry and some notso furry friends outdoors, we hope you enjoylong winter evenings hibernating in front of awarm fire and we will be in touch in thespring ready to leap into action again.

These images of wrought iron gates are takenfrom my current exhibition entitledSettlement. The exhibition as a whole iscomprised of three distinct elements: a seriesof large scale drawings of everyday workimplements in charcoal and acrylic on paper, avideo installation also entitled Settlement, anda photographic display of vernacular forgedwrought iron gates.

These photographs represent part of an extensivearchive which I have been building since 2007. My aim isto pictorially, historically and geographically record thewrought iron gates that are still extant. Currently thisarchive contains images of some 300 farm gatesprimarily from County Kilkenny, however I do have asubstantial number from other Counties.

Wrought iron gates form an important element ofthe architectural heritage of our rural landscape and theyare fast disappearing. These gates remain beautifulexamples of the creative ingenuity of the local forge.Design solutions, particularly around the closingmechanism seem to be unique to certain areas. Theselocal styles suggests the work of the local blacksmithand warrant recording. Currently I am in the process ofdeveloping an archival model which will see these gatesrecorded photographically, with their location mapped on

GPS along with the towns land name in Irish. I aim tocreate further layers to this archive by locating the sitesof local forges and mapping them on GPS along with anyinformation about the blacksmith and forge that isavailable. My aim over the coming years is to developthis model and extend the research nationally.

The entire resource will be available in digitalformat on the web and I also hope to create a highquality book of photographic plates documenting thisimportant archive.

I have witnessed a very deep, heartfelt responseto this exhibition. Both the drawings and, in particular,the photographs have provoked strong emotionalreactions that are not merely triggered by a nostalgia forthe past, they are negotiating the values of integrity,honesty, endeavour. They are connecting with thesimplicity of a physical engagement with ourenvironment.

The current photographic exhibition containsthirty limited edition prints, printed with a seven colourprint system on 308gsm Hahnemuhle photo rag paperwhich is 100% cotton. The paper and inks are botharchival quality and the prints are described as digitalpigment prints. The word giclee is often used to describethis process; a French word which means “to spurt” andrefers to the jetting of ink in the format printer. Thephotographs are printed in a limited edition. Each print is50 cm x 70cm, all are numbered and signed.

Wrought iron gates form animportant element of thearchitectural heritage of ourrural landscape and they arefast disappearing.

Wrought iron is a ductile and malleable material,it contains very little carbon and is fibrous in compositiondue to the presence of long strands of slag. Wrought ironwas formed by puddling pig iron in a reverberatoryfurnace. This furnace kept the fuel and iron separate,when the iron was molten it was stirred or rabbledexposing it to the air where carbon was burnt off as gasthus creating a very pure iron. The iron went through afurther process that saw it rolled hammered cut re heatedhammered and rolled again, the more often this processwas repeated the better the grade of wrought iron.Traditionally wrought iron was classified as “best” “bestbest” and “best best best” quality. The last puddlingfurnace for producing wrought iron in England closed in1974 and since then no more wrought iron has beenproduced in Ireland, the UK or the rest of Europe.

Following the recent lecture by US Biomimicry Expert,Dr. Dayna Baumeister, co-founder of the BiomimicryGuild, Zeynep Arhon explains what Biomimicry is andshows us that nature can inspire industry to findsolutions to their problems.

Biomimicry (from bios, meaning life, and mimesis,meaning to imitate) is the conscious emulation of nature’sgenius. It is studying humpback whale fin to develop amore efficient turbine, or termite mound to design abuilding without air conditioning, or symbioticrelationships between organisms to develop cooperationstrategies. It is innovation inspired by nature.

The conscious emulation of life's genius is a survivalstrategy for the human race, a path to a sustainablefuture. The starting point is to accept that we are onlytoddlers on this planet and nature has already solved theproblems that we are tackling with. For designers,engineers, innovators and business leaders, the answerto the question “What would nature do here?” is arevelation. There is not one new idea, but many, becauselife on this planet has evolved through 3.8 billion years,yielding 30 million species that are success stories. Thatis why companies are now turning to nature for solutions.Here are a few examples:

Learning from KingfishersThe Shinkansen Bullet Train of the West Japan RailwayCompany is the fastest train in the world, travelling 200miles per hour. The problem? Noise. Air pressurechanges produced large thunder claps every time thetrain emerged from a tunnel, causing residents one-quarter a mile away to complain. Eiji Nakatsu, the train'schief engineer and an avid bird-watcher, asked himself,"Is there something in nature that travels quickly andsmoothly between two very different mediums?"Modelling the front-end of the train after the beak ofkingfishers, which dive from the air into bodies of waterwith very little splash to catch fish, resulted not only in aquieter train, but 15% less electricity use even while thetrain travels 10% faster.

Learning from SpidersMore than 250,000 birds per day in Europe die fromcollisions with glass windows. Estimates in the UnitedStates run into the hundreds of millions. Birds eitherdon't see the glass or they see reflections in the glass,such as trees, that make them try to fly through as if itisn't there.

ORNILUX is an insulated glass sheeting made byArnold Glas, a German-based company, which isdesigned to reduce the causes of bird collisions. It usesa special ultraviolet (UV)-reflective coating that appearsalmost transparent to humans, but is clearly visible tobirds, because they can see a broader UV spectrum thanhumans. The inspiration for the use of UV-reflectivepatterns came from knowledge of how some species ofspiders incorporate UV-reflective silk strands to theirwebs to protect them against birds. Independent fieldtesting showed that 76% of the birds tested avoidedthe ORNILUX panel and flew towards the conventionalglass panel.“Creating conditions conducive

Learning from KelpBioPower Systems is an Australian company that createstechnologies to convert ocean power into a renewablesource of energy for other applications. Its assumption isthat oceans must have the best possible technologywithin them for marine life to have evolved in them for 3.8billion years.

BioPower’s wave power system, bioWAVE™, is basedon the swaying motion of kelp in the presence of oceanwaves. The hydrodynamic interaction of the buoyantblades with the oscillating flow field is designed formaximum energy absorption. In extreme wave conditionsthe bioWAVE™ automatically ceases operating andassumes a safe position lying flat against the seabed. Thiseliminates exposure to extreme forces, allowing for lighterdesigns and substantial cost savings.

Moreover, the base of bioWAVE™ mimics kelp’sholdfast, which is a flexible network of root-like haptera oranchors to attach the kelp to the ocean floor. By beingflexible, the haptera allow the kelp’s base to rotate slightly,thus providing some protection from the high torquecreated by waves. The base of bioWAVE™ has multipleanchors that redistribute vertical and lateral forces.

Implications for businessBiomimicry is not limited to developing new products.It can be applied to revisit business concepts and toreshape business initiatives. As Philips Research movedinto Open Innovation as a new business area almosthundred years after its establishment, it wanted tounderstand nature’s strategies to survive and thrive. Aninternational team of Certified Biomimicry Professionalsworked with Philips Research in order to answer how itcould build new business in a new business area. Thegroup focused on “cooperation” as a key survival andgrowth strategy in nature. Studying numerous species andinteractions, the group extracted key guidelines for PhilipsResearch Open Labs team. The project culminated innumerous application ideas and a Design Guideline toolthat could be used by Open Labs in the future.

Why now?The conscious emulation of life's genius is an innovationparadigm, a survival strategy for the human race, and apath to a sustainable future. Life has been performingdesign experiments in Earth’s R&D lab for 3.8 billion years.The organisms that are around today are the best ideas,failures are fossils.

Whatever the design challenge or question in hand,the odds are high that one or more of the existing 30million species has found a sustainable way to solve it.Today, more than ever in human history, we need to createproducts, processes, organisations, and policies that arewell-adapted to life over the long haul. We need to createconditions conducive to life. Biomimicry offers a practicalmethodology to achieve this and a new way of viewingand valuing nature.

KEVIN DWYER specialises in aerialphotography. He also compiledIRELAND – Our Island Home, an aerialtour around Ireland’s coastline (1997)and IRELAND – The Inner Island, ajourney though Ireland’s inlandwaterways (2000). A member of the IrishCruising Club, Kevin has achieved muchrecognition for his contribution to theappreciation of the Irish coastline; hisphotography is widely published innautical, cultural and educationalpublications.

In 1989 a client asked Kevin to submit a sample aerial photograph. Hehad never taken any so he sent one taken from a mountaintop. The resultwas a commission for an aerial photograph and his first helicopter flight;his new career ‘took off’. In sunny weather, Ireland is one of the mostbeautiful places but Kevin sometimes waited a whole summer for suitableweather to be rewarded with a day from heaven. These photographs aregathered to share the beauty of Ireland as it unfolded on various flightsover the years. They do not represent all of Ireland but are quite simply -here and there from the air. Kevin’s wife, Fie, also took photographs fromthe ‘other side of the helicopter’. The result is this stunning collectioninviting one to explore this beautiful island country for oneself. Kevincaptures the spirit and colour of Ireland, its varied landscape of rivers andlakes, coast and mountains, the tranquillity of ancient monasteries andvibrant cities and towns.

The study of Irish invertebrates is full of moments ofastonishment. Like this one - a butterfly flies past mykitchen window heading north. It has travelled over2,000 miles to reach the south coast of Ireland and itstill hasn’t completed its journey. And another - I lookdown the microscope at a minuscule beetle – lessthan a millimetre in length and it has wings likefeathers – it is called a feather-winged beetle. Andanother... we’re taking a walk as a family along aremote beach in Waterford and discover thathundreds of strange, slug-like animals have beenwashed up on the sand. We find out later that they aresea cucumbers. These animals have the ability to turninside out so that it can poison its enemies as well asbeing able to turn their bodies from solid to mush.Strange but true!

As an insect scientist I am fascinated by these tiny,ingenious animals and I am constantly learning newthings about the Irish insect fauna. One of the questions Iwas asking one day is ‘how many species of insects dowe have in Ireland?’ And from that thought, I wonderedhow many species of everything we have in Ireland. Apretty simple question but one that I quickly learned therewas no easy answer to. I was amazed. Do we really knowso little about our biodiversity that we don’t even knowhow many species we have? After some researching, Idiscovered that we know more about how many starsthere are in the galaxy than how many species there areon Earth.

I was intrigued. So I spent evenings reading obscurejournals, contacting experts and compiling the figures.With the caveat that we are continuing to find newspecies in Ireland, we came up with a figure of what we

we know more about howmany stars there are in thegalaxy than how many speciesthere are on Earth.

know to date - 26,000 species! Imagine - 26,000 speciesof plants, animals and fungi in this small island country ofours! And what fascinated me most was the breakdownof this figure. The vast majority of our biodiversity is madeup of small creatures without backbones (invertebrates) -mostly tiny, obscure animals that we know nothing about.These are followed way behind by plants, fungi andvertebrates (the backboned animals including mammalsand birds).

Yet we know very little about our invertebrates.Most can only be identified by a handful of experts –who are all retiring at a rapid rate. Most species are onlyknown from one place in the country, simply becausethat is where the expert lives or where he or she went ontheir holidays.

For those groups that we have good data for, weknow that they are under threat of extinction. Recent workhas shown that one third of Irish snails and slugs arethreatened with extinction and one quarter of Irish waterbeetles. For many of us, those figures are of passinginterest – who really has any affinity with slugs andbeetles? The fact that one-third of our bees arethreatened with extinction must be worth sitting up andtaking notice of. The vast majority of our biodiversity ismade up of obscure things that we know very little aboutand yet are disappearing right under our noses. Why isthis important and why should we care?

Sylvia Earle is a marine ecologist interested in thedeep sea. She has explored the ocean using deep-seasubmersibles and she has recently won an internationalaward for her work. She spoke at the award ceremonyand told how deep-sea explorers and astronauts are alikein that they really appreciate the importance of air, water,food and temperature – all the things you need to stayalive in space or under the sea. system. Our invertebrates - these tiny, bizarre animals areimportant in their own right, of course, but they are anintrinsic part of our life support system. Think of theservice that bees provide in pollinating our crops andwhat would happen if they disappeared? What about theservice of nutrient recycling provided by many insectsand earthworms to give us fertile soils? And the serviceof pest control? Surprisingly, an army of tiny, alien-likeinsects provide an important service of keeping otherinsect numbers under control. A free pest control service!

Imagine if these services were only available in smallpockets of our landscapes – our nature reserves? Imagineif these services were absent on our farms, in ourgardens, across the majority of our landscape? This yearis International Year of Biodiversity, and as part of thisIreland has committed to halting the loss of ourbiodiversity. This is a fantastic commitment, acommitment to our economy and a sustainable future.And this commitment is ours. Not the politicians, thepolicy-makers, the civil servants – but ours. It is ourresource, our life support system, and we want to lookafter it. We could, in fact, rename this year theInternational Year of our Life Support System. Andperhaps we should consider that it is not just this year butevery year? An idea worth spreading.

Each coat of paint is an archaeological layer. To peelaway the paint is to go back in time. Historic signs on aparticular building provide clues to the style and taste ofthe owner/occupier. They also offer information on thenature of the business and who operated it. The paintedsigns of a town or city at a particular time provideindicators to the wider socio-economic trends beingexperienced.

Where painted signs previously proliferated,examples are now few and fading. Consequently, thosehistoric signs still left have become historicallysignificant. Signs can be visually appealing through theirproportion, style, composition and execution. Typically,they were designed to complement the architectural styleand form of the host building (Jackson and Lawrence,2006). Their original intention was to be eye catching.Accordingly, signs are usually painted in the mostprominent positions of buildings and many now havelandmark qualities.

For some people a sign’s distinctive location anddesign add to their sense of place. They can triggernostalgic memories of now disappeared products,activities and personalities. To remove or paint over thesign is to erase a possibly comforting connection toprevious shop owners or favoured products. The result isto fundamentally change a layer of memory from positiveto negative. Of course, if a person had a bad experiencewith the product or previous site operators displayed in

the sign then removing the marker may help reduce theunfavourable feeling towards that place.

Many of the remaining historic painted signs exist onfaçades protected under the Planning and DevelopmentAct 2000. The façades may be part of a listed structureor lie within an Architectural Conservation Area (ACA).Individual buildings are listed if they are deemed to be ofsufficient interest under at least one of the followingcriteria: architectural, historical, archaeological, artistic,cultural, scientific, social or technical. An ACA is a place,area, or group of structures of architectural, historical,archaeological, artistic, cultural, scientific, social ortechnical interest. Being within an ACA or on a listedstructure does provide legal protection to historic signs.However, the ability of legislation to protect a sign isdependant on suitably qualified individuals in localauthority planning departments making informed heritagedecisions when assessing development applications.

Currently only a minority of city and county councilsemploy conservation officers. In their absence town

planners rule on applications unless forwarded to theDepartment of Environment, Heritage and LocalGovernment. Unfortunately Irish town planning mastersprogrammes as a whole do not deal comprehensivelywith conservation issues. It is one module of many. As aresult the value of the historic signs which may be erasedthrough façade cleaning or building augmentation istypically not flagged. The sign is then lost. The situationis even more precarious for historic signs on structuresthat have no heritage protection.

Painted signs are an important if under-recognisedcultural heritage resource. Either contemporary orhistoric they are a unique imprint by an individual ontothe streetscape. By the messages they contain signs canprovide evidence of cultural change and the geographiesof everyday life. Accordingly, there needs to be greaterappreciation of painted signs both as a finite primarysource but also as attractive additions to the country’surban centres.

Why do we need specifically to consider ‘architecture asan art form’? This call for action can be understood assupporting a perhaps undervalued but specificcontribution that architects currently make to society,alongside their spatial, technical, problem-solving, andproject-managing skills. High quality contemporaryarchitecture is promoted annually in the Irish ArchitecturalAssociation’s awards, and by the RIAI in its triennialawards. Certainly the work of gifted architects makingnew buildings needs to be celebrated, but is there anissue in the context of the architectural heritage? Ourcountry houses have a plethora of books that extol theirvirtues: surely enough has been said? Be that as it may,the experience of conservation officers in persuadingtheir Councils to add structures to the Record ofProtected Structures seems to suggest that Councillorsunderstand the value of vernacular buildings better thanothers. This suggests the need also to discuss the artisticlegacy to be found in our built environment, whether thework of known historic figures, or the work of anonymousbut skilled amateur arrangers of space façade andtheatrical effect.

The Art Valueof Architectural

HeritageIn October 2009 The Department of the Environment,

Heritage and Local Government published a newpolicy on Architecture. Part of the policy was a ‘call

for action’ to foster an understanding of architectureas an art form. Architecture Officer, Colm Kenny,

considers this concept.

In the context of protecting the architectural heritage,it is noteworthy that there are eight reasons for which abuilding might be protected as part of the built heritage:architectural, artistic, archaeological, cultural, historic,social, scientific and technical special interest. So whatprecisely is the artistic or architectural special interestthat a structure could have (assuming that they are thesame as each other)? Whenever building became morethan mere shelter, when the requirement was to enclosespace in a ‘celebratory or magnificent’ way, invested withcultural meaning to display power, beauty, authority, orspirituality, it demanded design, foresight, cleverness,skill, as well as an eye for proportion, harmony,appropriateness.

Irish architects Niall and Valerie Mulvin, in theirseminal book A Lost Tradition, explored the inheritance offorms and traces, searching for the evidence of pattern inthe remnants of ancient structures. A similar search forpattern is apparent in the architectural theory ofChristopher Alexander. He meditated on a sharedlanguage of patterns to be found in buildings:

‘Each building is a member of a family and yetunique... At first sight, we might imagine that each farmermade his barn beautiful, simply by paying attention to itsfunction... But this does not explain the similarity ofdifferent barns. We might imagine then, that the farmergot his power to build a barn by copying the other barnsaround him... But this does not explain the great varietyof barns... The proper answer to the question ‘How is afarmer able to make a new barn?’ lies in the fact thatevery barn is made from patterns... These patternsexpressed as rules of thumb, which any farmer cancombine and re-combine to make an infinite variety ofnew barns... And all the rules of thumb are part of largersystems which are languages’. (Christopher Alexander,The Timeless Way of Building)

Certainly the work of giftedarchitects making newbuildings needs to becelebrated, but is there anissue in the context of thearchitectural heritage?

Action 30 of the Government Policy on Architecture2009 – 2015 requests that:

‘The Department of the Environment, Heritage and LocalGovernment, in consultation with the Arts Council andthe Heritage Council, will develop an approach tofostering an understanding of architecture as an artform and as a component of our shared culturalinheritance by including an explicit architectural and builtenvironment focus within the briefs of Local AuthorityArts, Architectural Conservation and Heritage Officers’

These languages of construction are to be seen inthe old buildings of the towns and countryside of Ireland,in the regular street buildings, the typical houses,whether thatched or slated, in the palette of materials, inproportioning systems, and environmental controls likesash windows. The decorum of the previous developersof individual plots of urban land, in respecting theprecedented image of a street, area or town, has beenundervalued. Many of these ‘good, but not outstanding’buildings have been lost heedlessly, in the last fifty years.The production and reproduction of typical buildingcomponents is based on an artisinal sense ofunderstanding of how to make good and useful, notnecessarily exceptional or novel, buildings, that do nothave to stand out or be distinguished from theirsurroundings for symbolic purposes. Like well-usedtools, the same forms of solution to the basic problemsof a particular building programme recur. Typical plans (inarchitectural practice referred to as ‘typologies’) havealways been one of the basic tools of good architecturaldesign – it provides the arrangement of spaces thatconforms to the users expectations of how space shouldwork, even if only as a starting point for a design. Theconsideration of the particularities of place and clientlead to the endless variation that Alexander outlined inthe quotation above. But where a client and an architectwork together to achieve something exceptional, bringingthis level of skill and competence to bear on a design isonly a starting point.

There are greater expectations placed on architectsby themselves (insofar as they reflect upon their workand refine their skills) and society, to produce unique,symbolically important, extravagant, luxurious, orotherwise very good buildings – to ‘do their best’. Thismay involve thinking out a functional requirement fromfirst principles to arrive at a novel, fresh or evenrevolutionary way for a building to serve its purpose. Or itmay involve the investment of a high degree of thought,care, attention to detail in the re-working of a typicalbuilding, to achieve a precise visual or other (auditory,tactile, psychological) objective. In the past, themanipulation of the few languages of architectureprovided a means of expressing ideas about how abuilding should be considered to be beautiful, as forexample, in the evolution of styles of classicalarchitecture outlined so lucidly by John Summerson inhis book ‘The Classical Language of Architecture’.

The quintessentially architectural skill is in thearrangement of space. Examples include planning aseries or enfilade of rooms to provide a contrast betweena single long vista through their interlinking doors, andmultiple different experiences in the more enclosedspaces along the way, or designing the major routethrough a building as a sequence of varied spatial orpsychological experiences that stimulates our senses.

A related, but separate approach sees the buildinginternally or externally as a set of material forms to be

considered as sculpture. Revered twentieth centuryarchitect Le Corbusier referred to architecture as ‘themasterful play of forms in light’. ContemporaryPortuguese architect Alvaro Siza sees his buildings as aprimarily sculptural forms. Sixteenth century Italianarchitect Andrea Palladio gave his name to the Baroquestyle so revered in Ireland in the Eighteenth century -Palladian. This relies on the symmetrical arrangement ofelongated country houses, articulating them into wings,arcades and central blocks, all clothed in stone wallsvigorously and voluminously articulated with columns,entablatures and decoration of Roman and Greek origin.Russborough House in Co. Wicklow, which has receivedsubstantial grant aid from the Heritage Council over thelast decade, exemplifies an exceptional achievement ofarchitecture, considered artistically. Conceived of moreas an art gallery in the country than as a house, designerRichard Castle was given the opportunity to mould stone,timber, plaster and indeed the surrounding landscape,into an experience of sensations of order, repose,privilege, and pleasure.

Much of the art historical discourse on architectureas an art revolves around the parsing and analysing ofthe decoration of buildings, and their temporal location inthe succession of styles. This approach leads easily tothinking about buildings as primarily visual artefacts(rather than experiences), and ultimately to considerationof them in two dimensions rather than four (the threespatial dimensions and time). It is the most easilycommunicable approach to understanding architecture,as it fits in books and magazines.

The books are no substitute, however, for visitingbuildings and experiencing them as living places. Thereis a vicarious thrill to be had in seeing how unfamiliarbuildings (big houses, modernist apartments, penthousecanteens) are used by other people. The recent OpenHouse Dublin festival facilitated this, turning the city intoa collection of architectural exhibits. If architecturalheritage is to be made more accessible, literally andeducationally, then perhaps this is the approach to take:treat the city itself as a museum of architecture.

Geological Heritage GuidelinesThe Irish Geological Heritage Programme (IGH) of theGeological Survey of Ireland (GSI), in partnership with theIrish Concrete Federation (ICF), recently issued someguidelines that will be helpful to anyone involved inappraising heritage matters for any proposeddevelopment, landscape assessment, planning strategyand environmental impact assessment. Whilst theseguidelines were primarily developed for those in thequarrying industry, it has quickly become apparent thatthey have a wider value in raising awareness ofgeological heritage and pointing people in the rightdirection for information about it.

Geological heritage ispoorly understood in thewider community, comparedto archaeology, architecture,wildlife or many other facetsof our heritage. The IGHProgramme in the GSI hasbeen establishing a picture ofthe most importantgeological heritage sitesaround the country, with theaim of designating NaturalHeritage Areas for thegeological importance, in thesame way that bogs,woodlands, waterways or other habitats may beprotected as NHAs, under the Wildlife (Amendment) Act2000. With limited resources available, progress hasbeen slow, but there is now a fairly detailed picture ofsites under consideration either as of stand-alonegeological importance or for integration with other naturalheritage priorities. Indeed, many of the existing pNHAsites have great geological characteristics, orgeodiversity, which provides the foundation to theirbiodiversity interest.

These guidelines offer brief definitions of geologicalheritage, an outline of the some of the issues involvedand discussion of the differing managementrequirements for geodiversity. It is often the case that weonly have some of the geological sites of importancebecause someone has extracted rocks or minerals in aquarry or pit. Consequently large working quarries maybe selected, simply because they are the best or onlyplace to see representative sections of stratigraphy. TheNHA status will not affect their existing permits. It maylead to discussions about modifying end use plans sothat some faces may be retained as accessible forgeological research and education for example. Somesites need a small element of ongoing extraction tomaintain their interest otherwise the faces develop screesthrough weathering and then vegetate. Other sites mayneed total protection but they are only a very smallminority, and in most cases any restrictions on thelandowners of sites will be very limited. Sometimes aplanned activity may enhance the geological interest,such as clearing field drains. Each site needs acustomised approach.

The other definition raised in these Guidelines is thatof the County Geological Site. These were adoptedwithin the National Heritage Plan (2002), and virtually alllocal authorities now have a selection of CountyGeological Sites listed in their County Development Plan.Whilst these have no statutory protection like an NHA orSAC, they are within the planning system and cannot bedestroyed or removed or otherwise damaged withoutsome consultation. Previously most sites of importanceknown to geologists were off the radar of any of the restof society.

We are appealing for records of all bird speciescommon and rare alike, but in particular records ofdeclining or more difficult to find species such asCuckoo, Spotted Flycatcher, Jay, warblers, waders,Golden Plover, Nightjar, Yellowhammer, Red Grouse,Treecreeper, Quail, Kingfisher, Woodcock, Chough,breeding seabirds, breeding duck and all birds of preywill be particularly useful. In addition to the bird recordany breeding information or ‘breeding evidence’ as it’sknown, will greatly enhance the value of the record. Thetype of evidence would include a singing male, a pair ofbirds, a nest with eggs, or recently fledged young. Heritage Week Event Winners

A medieval challenge which saw members of the publiclive as a medieval family from 1210 in Taaffe’s Castle,Carlingford has won the top award for Best Overall Eventduring National Heritage Week 2010. The event, which wasorganised by Carlingford Heritage Centre, also won theaward for Most Innovative Event. The judging committeefelt that the Medieval Challenge held to celebrate the 800years of heritage in Carlingford captured the imagination ofyoung and old, both locally and nationally. It attractedsignificant attention, with approximately 7000 visitors overa seven day period, and was designed to educate peopleabout the daily lives of people during the medieval period.People could interact with the medieval family as they wentabout their daily routine in the medieval village which wascreated for the week.

The award for Best Event Organised by a CommunityGroup / ENGO / Individual was given to an Irish WalledTown Heritage Day at Rinn Duin organised by St. John’sParish Heritage Group, Lecarrow, Co. Roscommon.Highlights of the event, which was held on Sunday 22ndAugust 2010, included clay pipe making demonstrations,costumed guides throughout the medieval trail at RinnDuin, and demonstrations and workshops by the Irish FieldArchery Associations.

Speaking about the winners, Michael Starrett, ChiefExecutive of the Heritage Council said, “these awards arean opportunity for National Heritage Week EventOrganisers to be recognised for the tremendous work theydo in organising and running events throughout the week.This year was the most successful National Heritage Weekto date with over 700 organisations and individualsorganising events nationwide. The week would simply nottake place without the dedication and commitment of thesepeople and we are delighted to recognise theirachievements”.

Other Event Organiser winners included:

Best Children’s Event (under 12’s) – Medieval Madnessat Aughnanure Castle organised by the OPW, AughnanureCastle, Oughterard, Co. Galway. This event encompassed

several children’s events and activities based around amedieval theme, with the main event being a children’smedieval tournament to find a Chieftain and Pirate Queenof the Castle. Running races, fancy dress, tug of war and ahistorical quest were all completed as part of thetournament. Archery and fencing workshops also tookplace for the young warrior to perfect their skills andexperience the training regime of a real medieval warrior.

Best Interactive Event – Water Open Day organised byLifetime Lab, Lee Road, Cork. This event explored thepositive impact of water as a heritage resource andhighlighted its role across areas such as recreation, culture,engineering, employment, health and tourism. The eventwas free to the public and an estimated 800 visitors tookpart. Outdoor activities included birds of prey displays,giant bubble making, launching water rockets and creatinga giant wall hanging. Indoor activities included looking athow hydro power and geo thermal works, looking at thescience of water and how water treatment works before wedrink it.

These awards are recognition for the time and effortEvent Organisers nationwide put into running eventsthroughout Heritage Week. Selling Nature ShortThe EUROPARC Federation, established in 1973,represents over 400 members in 36 countries and is nowthe recognised, professional organisation for Europeanprotected areas. The Federation is an independent, non-governmental organisation that brings togetherorganisations responsible for the management of most ofEurope’s protected areas. The 2010 EUROPARCFederation conference took place in the Abruzzo, Lazioand Molise National Park Italy between September 29th-October 2nd, and during this time the memberscontributed to the Pescasseroli Declaration 2010. Thisdocument reminds governments that protected areas arekey players in saving natural heritage in Europe andaround the world and urges them to invest more in natureconservation.

2010 is the International year of Biodiversity.Protected areas are the keystones in the preservation ofEurope’s nature and biodiversity and models ofsustainable development. Knowing that these areas areembedded in cultural and national identities and that thebiodiversity held within them is our fundamental lifesupport system, the EUROPARC Federation, itsmembers and supporters urge appropriate investment inEurope’s protected areas so that society can still benefitfrom the fundamental services nature provides us with inthe future.

The Pescasseroli Declaration calls upon national andregional governments and the European Commission to:

• recognise and reflect in their policies, programmesand resource allocations the need to ensurebiodiversity is maintained and ecosystem servicessecured for the future natural health and economicwealth of Europe.

• use the skills and experience built up in protectedareas to pilot innovative approaches to integratedland use and sustainable rural development;

• integrate relevant public policies that will enableprotected areas to better fulfil their role asmanagement models with long establishedcommunity engagement .

Protected areas represent Europe’s last naturalassets. Through their effective management they play asignificant role in climate change mitigation, storevaluable water supplies, protect soils and agriculture andmaintain healthy ecosystems. Importantly they sustainlocal economies, provide recreation health and well beingresources and inspire national and local pride. Almostone quarter of the European population, some 125Million people, are affected directly by Europe’sprotected areas, with the entire population dependant onthe services they produce. Yet government decisionsacross Europe have the potential to diminish thesevaluable areas through significant cuts in themanagement of these protected areas. Severe budgetcuts (up to 50%) are anticipated in 2011 reflecting aregressive step and risking the valuable work thatprotected areas have built up over past decades. Thelack of investment by governments seriously undercutsthe ability of such natural sites to adequately secure thevalue of these natural resources, sustain economies andrelease the ecosystem benefits needed for society.

Traditional Building Skills Field School on Gola IslandThe Ulster Architectural Heritage Society in partnershipwith Donegal County Council and the Gola DevelopmentCommittee hosted a traditional building skills field schoolon Gola Island, County Donegal in early June 2010.Under expert supervision, fifteen participants restoredpart of Teach Charlie Ned, a vernacular cottage. Thosetaking part were given instruction how to dismantle andrebuild fragile chimneys, apply lime mortar to walls, re-slate a roof using natural slates, repair and renew timbersliding sash windows and apply the very latesttechnology in double-glazing to upgrade existingwindows.

Gola Island is situated just one kilometre off theCounty Donegal coast. Many families left the island in the1960s but the fine, solid granite buildings they occupiedstill remain. Over the course of the weekend, almost 200people participated in the free tours of the vernaculararchitecture of Gola Island which were held to coincidewith the field school. The tours emphasised the form andfunction of vernacular architecture, local buildingmaterials, traditional building skills, cultural landscapecharacter and clachan settlements. In the All-IrelandTraditional Building Craft Skills’ report in 2009, theNational Heritage Training Group identified increasedpublic awareness of the value and importance oftraditional buildings and the conservation of vernacular

buildings as key measures to creating a sustainabledemand for traditional building skills. The TraditionalBuilding Skills’ Field School was funded by the UlsterArchitectural Heritage Society; the Department of theEnvironment, Heritage & Local Government; The HeritageCouncil and Donegal County Council under the CountyDonegal Heritage Plan.

Space, Place & Nature in Sligo: Connecting our Built Heritage & the Urban EnvironmentMore than half of the world’s population live in cities.Given that urbanisation will continue to be a strong andunstoppable trend, how can we build cities that areenjoyable to live in, resource-effective and will supporthuman and environmental health, rather than becomingharmful to both? One surprisingly straight forward way todo this is by encouraging walking.

The act of walking is something that most of us takefor granted. And yet, putting in place the supports thatencourage people to integrate walking into their dailylives has the effect of improving not only our personalhealth, but also our environment. The buzz words are lowcarbon travel but the incentive to walk is simply to havewalkable streets and vibrant, attractive public spaces –space to walk safely with the kids while carrying theshopping, attractive seating to stop along the way, littlepocket parks to gather on a dry or sunny day.Essentially, looking at our built environment is a criticalcomponent of protecting our natural environment.

WalkingMatters is organising a conference to look atthese issues, with speakers from the arts and tourism,

and a public health professional with a background insaving whales. The conference will be opened byarchitect and planner, Minister Ciarán Cuffe and thekeynote speaker is Senator David Norris who did somuch to protect the beautiful built environment ofGeorgian Dublin. The conference will be held onNovember 5th in the Glasshouse Hotel Sligo.

A central part of the conference, which is supportedby the Heritage Council, is a drawing event – The BigDraw. Guided by a professional artist, Lucy Brennan-Shiel, the aim of The Big Draw is to encourage people ofall ages to explore ideas and express their creativity. InSligo, the focus of the workshops will be to look at ourstreets and public spaces in Sligo Town and exploregraphically their vision for how things could be. The BigDraw is part of the international Campaign for Drawing.

The Medieval Rural Settlement ProjectThe various excavations in our main cities over the pastforty years or so, as well as other related research, havegiven us a fairly rounded idea of what life was like in ourtowns during the Middle Ages. However, the DiscoveryProgramme recognised that there was as much knownabout what contemporary life was like in rural Ireland -perhaps especially in those parts of the country thatremained under Gaelic control. The Medieval RuralSettlement Project was set up in 2002, under thedirection of Dr Niall Brady, to consider the nature of thearchaeological landscape associated with rural Ireland inthe period c.AD 1100–1650. The project has a number ofmodules, chosen to represent a cross-section of thediverse cultural landscapes of later medieval Ireland.The first module, which has now been published in thisbeautiful new book, considers the lands around the cityof Dublin - the country’s medieval capital. Three othermodules form part of the overall study: the pioneeringexamination under Dr Brady’s personal direction of arural, Anglo-Norman manor at Castlemore (near Tullow),Co. Carlow, using only geophysical survey and field-walking; the excavation, also under Dr Brady’s specificdirection of a newly discovered O’Conor castle at Tulsk,Co. Roscommon, as well as its relationship with anumber of other nearby medieval structures; and a study– involving all forms of survey as well as excavation - ofthe wider landscape of Gaelic Roscommon during themedieval period, under the supervision of BrianShanahan. Those other modules – the actual research forwhich is now completed - will be published in two booksand a series of articles over the coming year or two.

The Dublin region in the Middle Ages: settlement,land-use and economy, is a study of the medieval regionthat contained and was defined by the presence ofIreland’s largest nucleated settlement. Imaginatively andseamlessly combining documentary and archaeologicaldata, the volume explores the primary settlementfeatures of that hinterland area, including: defensivemonuments such as castles; manors and organisedestates; the church and the various types ofecclesiastical organisations of the period; and, of course,the Pale. It examines the ways in which the resources of

the region were managed and exploited to produce food,fuel and raw materials for both town (especially Dublinitself) and country, and investigates the processing of theraw materials for human consumption. Then as now, thecity profoundly affected its surrounding area because ofits need for resources and through the ownership of theland by the citizens of Dublin as well as through thecontrol of trade by the city merchants. In addition topresenting a timely examination of that urban-ruralinteraction, it is intended that the volume will alsocontribute to other wider academic debates on topicssuch as settlement landscapes, the role of lordship, andthe productivity of the agriculture of the time.

The Discovery Programme is a public organisationfor advanced research in Irish archaeology. Its soleactivity is to engage in full-time archaeological andrelated research in order to enhance our knowledge ofIreland’s past. The organisation was set up in 1991 andwas funded initially by the government through directgrants. Now, as an independent body, it is funded mainlyby an annual grant from the Heritage Council. It isgoverned by a Council and Directorate whose memberscomprise leading Irish archaeologists from the whole ofthe country (north and south). After wide consultation thelatter bodies identify gaps in our knowledge of thearchaeology of Ireland which then become the basis forthe organisation’s various research projects.

Dr Margaret Murphy was formerly a historian with theMedieval Rural Settlement Project. She is now a historylecturer in Carlow College and has published widely onvarious aspects of the social, economic andecclesiastical history of the later Middle Ages.

Dr Michael Potterton is a former Senior ResearchArchaeologist with the Discovery Programme and isauthor or editor of six books, including UncoveringMedieval Trim (2009) and Rural settlement in medievalIreland (2009).

New biodiversity website aimed atprimary schools

A new web site has been released to help increasebiodiversity awareness among Primary school children.The web site www.ispynature.com encourages pupils toplace sightings of plants or animals on a map and writein some nature notes with the sighting. Using an emailaddress they can return to look at the map and naturenotes as their sightings increase (perhaps of the schoolgrounds or their garden/farm at home). DownloadablePDF guides for teachers and pupils are available, alongwith a special module on Ireland's lichens (Ireland has aricher biodiversity of lichen than green plants, yet it is agroup for which there is little awareness). Take a Fantastic Journey with the NewFota Learning Zone

Fota Learning Zone, is an innovative new digital resourcefor Fota House in Cork and it allows teachers andstudents to work online to plan their visit based on theirspecific curriculum needs. This means that the wholevisitor experience is a much richer one as it brings thehistory of this wonderful house to life and it allowsstudents to use this space to see the school curriculumin a whole new way. It has technical appeal too, as itencourages students to use skills in areas such as self-directed learning via “WebQuests”. These WebQuestsrefer to learning exercises that give the student anauthentic task they must complete and are usuallyundertaken as a group project.

The Leaving Certificate resources contain a numberof themed learning units including: ‘Land Acts’, and‘Heritage in the Marketplace’. The Transition Yearresources are more multi-disciplinary and cover a rangeof topics relating to the social, functional andarchitectural history of Fota and will offer the students anopportunity to develop skills in real life situations.

The resource also features a ‘Teacher’s Area’containing a wealth of information in the form of ‘FactPacks’ for pre and post-visit activities and a guide onpossible curriculum linkages. The Wild Flowers of Ireland

The 300 wild flowers documented here are arranged by habitat, fromlawns and parks, old ruins, urban waste ground, roadside verges,sand dunes, canals, woodland, rivers, lakes and bogs, to the rareenvironment of the Burren.

The book also touches on the many ecological changes that affectour native flora. The environmental pounding our countryside hastaken over the last century has reduced the amount of habitatavailable for plants, with farming mechanisms responsible for thedestruction of 95% of rare plants. The Trains Long Departed

By Tom FerrisThe first Irish railway was established as earlyas 1834 and by 1914 the network covered theentire island. However, the development ofthe internal combustion engine, combinedwith the inherent unprofitability of many of thesmaller and more remote lines resulted in adrastic cull of the system in the course of thetwentieth century.

It is these lost railways of Ireland that are thesubject of Tom Ferris’s new book. Somemainlines were simply uneconomic; all thevarious narrow gauge lines, many of whichhad been promoted with the encouragementof the British government in the latenineteenth century to stimulate economicdevelopment in remote places, were withoutexception unprofitable. The resultant purgingof the system has left the entire north-westquarter of the island without a singlekilometre of useable track in the early twenty-first century and many other parts with only asparse service.

The Trains Long Departed tells the story ofthese lost railways, the repository ofoptimism, disappointment and nostalgia.
