We know that stimulating the mind and strengthening the body has enormous benefits at any age and may even slow
the process of memory loss.
Besides being good for you, keeping your brain and the body active and engaged doesn’t just improve your life – it’s
a whole lot of fun! Enroll in a class or two that pique your interest. I’m confident you’ll learn something new and
make a few friends along the way. While you’re at it, why not suggest a class or even volunteer to teach a subject
you’re passionate about?
Just give us a call to reserve a space in a class that intrigues you. Please keep in mind that class space is limited,
priority is given to residents and most, but not all classes are free. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing

Everything Turtles Beth Dolan July 29th 2:00 pm A
There are around 250 species of turtles. Some can live up to 150 years or more (which means information given in
Finding Nemo about turtles is accurate). The largest turtle is the leatherback turtle: shell length is 8 feet long; it
weighs about 1,800 pounds. Though turtles are very slow on land (0.1 to 0.5 mph), leatherback turtles can swim at 22
mph. Some turtles can dive 3,000 feet below the water’s surface. A turtle shell (made up of 60 bones) is attached to its
spine—the reason why turtles can feel pain through their shell. Turtles do not have ears to hear—they only feel
vibrations. However, their sense of smell is strong. Join Beth as she talks about these amazing creatures and you will
also be able to meet her yellow bellied/painted pet turtle, Gracie.

name change from Otto Brothers’ Brewing Company to Grand Teton Brewing occurred in the Fall of 2000 and in
April of 2009 Charlie sold the brewery to Steve and Ellen Furbacher. Charlie is bringing his favorites from the
brewery and will lead this fun, tasty and informative class along with Nicole and Aileen. Don’t miss out on learning
from an expert!

History of the Tea Party Bernie Hackett July 9th 2:00 pm A
Every month at The Fountains we have a tea party with delicious treats and specialty tea, but where did the tradition
of an afternoon tea come from? Who started it and why? Tea consumption increased dramatically during the early
nineteenth century and it is around this time that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is said to have complained of
"having that sinking feeling" during the late afternoon. At the time it was usual for people to take only two main
meals a day, breakfast, and dinner at around 8 o'clock in the evening. The solution for the Duchess was a pot of tea
6
and a light snack, taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon. Learn more about this historical pastime and
how it has evolved through the years and around the world.

Hometown History – St. Pete through the Years Lisa Celona August 4th 2:00 pm A
With an average temperature of 73.7 degrees and 361 days a year of recorded sunshine, it’s no wonder St.
Petersburg’s moniker is the Sunshine City. Incorporated in 1892 with fewer than 300 residents, the booming coastal
city of St. Petersburg, Florida occupies some of the most historic land in South. Despite the massive growth of the
area and St. Petersburg's popularity as a major gulf coast resort area, many of the city's significant historic sites still
survive. These include ancient Indian mounds, the traditional site of an incident that may have inspired the later story
of Pocahontas and a historic fort that preserves some of the rarest cannons in the world. Join St. Petersburg native,
Lisa Celona, as she dives into the history of the “Sunshine City” we call home.

Hurricane Seminar Robert Garcia/Todd Barron TBD 2:00 pm A
Hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage to coastlines and even several hundred miles inland. They can produce
winds exceeding 155 miles per hour as well as tornadoes and microbursts. Additionally, hurricanes can create storm
surges along the coast and cause extensive damage from heavy rainfall. Floods and flying debris from the excessive
winds are often the deadly and destructive results of these weather events. Slow moving hurricanes traveling into
mountainous regions tend to produce especially heavy rain. Excessive rain can trigger landslides or mud slides. Flash
flooding can occur due to intense rainfall. This informative seminar is one you don’t want to miss especially since our
hurricane season has started.
Ice Cream in a Bag Lisa Celona & Sam Krysh July 24th 2:00 pm A
Ice cream has been a summer favorite for over a hundred years in the United States. Americans have the highest
consumption of ice cream in the world, at over 23 quarts per capita per year! Ice cream became popular and
affordable to Americans after the invention of a hand cranked ice cream churn by Nancy Johnson, which was patented
in 1843. Prior to her device, ice cream was a treat only the wealthy could afford. Yet, all it takes is a few simple
ingredients, two zip lock bags and some knowledge of chemical engineering to make your own homemade ice cream
without the churn! So if you like science and love ice cream, join us to create your own tasty treat. Ice cream in a bag
is delicious and surprisingly easy to make.
