The advent season is upon us. As we walk through this Christmas and New Year, it’s a time to stop and reflect on the incredible miracle of Jesus—God incarnate, come down to us in the form of a little baby—the Savior of the world offering hope, peace, joy and love through relationship with Him.

While the gift is given freely to us, they were bought with the ultimate price: Jesus’ death and resurrection. How humbling that a gift that would span both sides of eternity all came down to the birth of God’s only Son.

Have you embraced the gifts Jesus purchased through His birth, death and resurrection?

Whether you’re new to Highpoint or are a seasoned member, it is my hope that the story of Jesus would be made new in your heart. That His peace would surpass all understanding as we walk through this winter together. That His joy would pervade all aspects of your life so that His light would shine brightly to others. And that His love would impact your life in such a way that it cannot be contained.

This season, use this quarterly to embrace the hope, peace, joy and love that Jesus came to bring so that we can believe, belong and become more like Jesus together!

In His Strength,

Pastor Ron Zappia Senior Pastor 5

THREE STEPS TO MAKE HIGHPOINT YOUR CHURCH HOME.

STEP 1 | Meet We want to meet you! Get to know some of our pastors, staff

and others who are new at a casual meet-and-greet. Step 1

normally takes place the first weekend of the month directly

following each service at all campuses.

STEP 2 | ConnectConnect to the core of our church by taking a closer look at

who we are, what we’re passionate about and what it means

to believe, belong and become like Jesus. This 45-minute

study normally takes place the second weekend of the month

before or after services at each campus.

STEP 3 | CommitIn this final step, you’ll commit to making Highpoint your

church home by becoming a member, joining a group and

finding a place to serve. This step normally takes place the

third weekend of the month at each campus.

Christmas is theSeason of Giving!

Jesus coming to earth in the humility of a baby, yet with the power of being God Himself, was the greatest act of generosity the world has ever seen. Because of that, our heart is to give back generously to the building of God’s kingdom.

Passion Gifts are all about spreading the gospel here, thereand everywhere (Acts 1:8)! Every dollar that is designated as a PassionGift, above and beyond your regular giving, will go back outside thewalls of our church, to reach people in our community, our country andour world through global missionaries, church planting, local outreachpartners and the Highpoint Care Center.

The goal? To raise $200,000 throughout the month of December to fundthese local and global outreach and international missions initiatives.

Baptisms. Marriage. Baby Dedications. Ordination. Dan and Esther Penney practically grew up at First Baptist Church of Wheaton (FBC). Having experienced many of their most cherished life events within the walls of the church, it wasn’t a surprise when they felt called and were then commissioned by FBC to embark on their biggest step of faith: full-time missions in Senegal, West Africa.

It was just over eighteen years ago that Dan and Esther were getting ready to leave for Senegal. They recall their last Sunday at FBC

Story of Lasting Change :“[...] praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:18).

M E E T T H E P E N N E Y S

saying, “That was the Sunday the pastor handed in his resignation. It was a hard Sunday to leave.” The Penneys didn’t know what the future would hold for a church that had such a special place in their heart. But they had to “press on towards the goal” despite their uncertain future in the home they were leaving behind, and the home they had yet to make (Phillipians 3:14). Burdened for a foreign country they were about to transition into and also for a church family they loved, they embraced prayer as they prepared to enter Senegal.

25 WWW.HIGHPOINT.CHURCH

Senegal is located on the edge of what is known as the “10/40 Window,” where most of the world’s least evangelized people reside. While Senegal is a predominantly Muslim country, it has religious freedom.

“As missionaries, we are allowed to go and do whatever we want to reach Senegalese for Christ,” Esther shares. “Our vision is to see the Senegalese church grow and to see the Good News spread to other nations that are not open to the gospel. The Senegalese people have the opportunity to go into restricted nations that we would never be allowed to go into.” Dan adds,

“We believe if we can establish a vibrant [...] church in Senegal, Senegal can be a door to the rest of the Muslim world.”

After arriving in Senegal in 2001, Dan spent three years teaching at a local Bible school focused on training national church leaders. From there, Dan agreed to serve as the country director for all of World Venture’s missionaries serving in Senegal. In that position, he oversaw a team of more than seventy workers in multiple ministry roles:

“We have missionaries who run a missionary kid school, and others who serve at a beach campsite,” Dan said. “We have two different Bible translation projects, an urban church planting team, and people involved in seminary education, training pastors. And a really creative ministry happening in an auto mechanic shop! Young Senegalese men are trained in a trade while hearing about Jesus and having an opportunity to grow as disciples of Christ.”

Story of Lasting Change :

26WINTER 2019

As ministry thrived and took off in Senegal, both Dan and Esther felt burdened for the church they left behind and continued to pray for the local body of believers back home in Wheaton. “Every time we returned back to First Baptist of Wheaton for our home assignment, it would really hurt to come and see the congregation slowly dwindling,” Esther recalled. Spurred on by the decline, the Penneys continued to fervently pray for the revival of this local church.

In June 2019, Dan and Esther left Senegal to return to Wheaton for a one-year home assignment. Upon return, they didn’t know what to expect with the church that had played such an important role in the earlier years of their faith, the church that’s been their home-base.

“It has been really exciting to come back to Wheaton this time,” Esther reflects. “To come back and see the impact [of partnering] with Highpoint, to see people excited about reaching out, and to hear that there are new people being baptized [...] people coming to Christ for the first time! This is an answer to twenty years of us praying for our church.”

After two decades of praying for revival and renewal of First Baptist Church of Wheaton, God answered the Penney’s faithful prayers. On Mother’s Day, May 14, 2018, First Baptist Church of Wheaton landed with majority member vote to become Highpoint Church’s Wheaton Campus.

27 WWW.HIGHPOINT.CHURCH

“THIS IS AN ANSWER TO TWENTY YEARS OF US

PRAYING FOR OUR CHURCH.”

Interestingly enough, this March 2020, Highpoint Church will celebrate 20 years since being planted. How amazing that God was divinely

orchestrating an incredible partnership to blend the strongest ministries of First Baptist Wheaton and Highpoint Church for His glory to reach more for His Kingdom. Now over a year since coming together, the Wheaton Campus is thriving. We truly are, better together.

Highpoint Church supports 40+ mission units, including the Penneys. Through your generous support of families like the Penneys, the gospel is advancing here, there and everywhere. Partner with us in reaching our Passion Gifts goal for global missions by raising $200,000 to support the 40+ mission units throughout the month of December.
