OFFICERS REPORTS
Commandant
Semper Fi Marines and Members.
As we come close to the Marine Corps
Birthday Ball we hope all are doing well.
The celebration of our birthday is upon us
and in the spirit of brotherhood I am
looking at having a great turn out and an
even better party. I would like to welcome
back our snow birds.
As we move forward in league
affairs, our elections are in December. I
encourage everyone to look deep into
themselves and come up with ways you
can commit time to help your league,
whether it be as an officer or a cook. Even
some boots at the bar at future events.
Participation is vital to our existence. Each
member has value and you bring worth to
our facility. I cannot do it without you.
And our Detachment can not run itself.
Our next members meeting will
be November 5th due to the Veterans
Day weekend falling on our usual 2nd
Monday of the month. We will have chow
for those who come hungry and open
arms for those who attend to welcome
you back. See you soon.
Quote of the month:
"My only answer as to why the Ma-
rines get the toughest jobs is because
the average Leatherneck is a much bet-
ter fighter. He has far more guts, cour-
age, and better officers... These boys
out here have a pride in the Marine
Corps and will fight to the end no mat-
ter what the cost. "
2nd Lt. Richard C. Kennard, Peleliu, World War II

MODD Pound 183
WOOF, WOOF
On 20 October,
our favorite MODD pound #183 con-
ducted a Rose Fund drive at the Walmart
Supercenter, on the corner of SR54 and
Little Road, for 4 hours from 10am to
2pm. We had plenty of help making this
drive a resounding success. Accompanying
the Dogs were two members of the an-
tique military vehicle club: Dick Deren
with his WWII jeep and Mike Ryan along
with his Humvee. Both vehicles were
decked out in award winning style with
plenty of attention grabbing flags and a fine
looking machine gun. And, along came
Mike DellaVecchia with his '53 Ford F100
pick-up truck. Bob Wilson brought his
M60 along with a belt of suspicious look-
ing ammo and a selection of his 782 gear.
We would be hard pressed to attract
more attention. Ann Schiola from Richard
Browne's pistol team was a key supporter
and snapped the only picture documenting
the day (see page 4). Steve Boyd, Ron
Speer, Brian Bumstead, Joe Sander, and
Bill English, worked the two doors charm-
ing the Walmart customers out of their
cash. Mike Lattuca and Ralph Cook from
the Detachment worked right along with
the Dogs through the 93 degree Florida
sunshine to make this event one of our
best ever. We handed out more than 650
roses and hopefully made that many new
friends of MODD pound 183 and MCL
567.
Ken Soto and 3 of his Young Ma-
rines showed up and made a real differ-
ence. They recruited the school age
shoppers with positive comments about
their experiences in the program.
The entire team will be back on
site this Saturday 27 October to do it
again. This is our first "two in a row" ef-
fort strategically placed at the end of Oc-
tober to take advantage of the Veterans
Day holiday but not interfere with the
Marine Corps Birthday Ball.

THE FROZEN CHOSIN
Gen. R. Murray,
then Lt.Col, com-
manding the 5th
Marines addressed
his men prior to
breaking out and
told them the fol-
lowing: “We’re
going to take our
dead, wounded,
and equipment
when we leave.
We’re coming out,
I tell you, as Ma-
rines-or not at all”
. That is how they
come out . The
War In Korea by
Robert Leckie
During the withdrawal from the Chosin Reservoir, the 1st Marine Division sustained
7500 casualties, about half of which were due to frostbite. And, at the same time, inflict-
ing a crippling 37,500 casualties on the Communist Chinese.
War Correspondents
asked MajGen Smith if it
were true that United
States Marines were re-
treating for the first time in
history. The General re-
plied what was to become a
famous quote:
“Gentlemen, we are not
retreating. We are merely
attacking in another direc-
tion.”

last action by the 4th Marine Brigade in that the Brigade
conducted an attack across the Meuse River the night be-
fore the armistice and established foothold on the opposite
bank by the morning of 11 November 1918. Of the 32,000
Marines who served in France, 2,459 died in action, 8,907
were wounded and 25 were taken prisoner. (“The Last
Night of the War”, F. C. Yohn, Marine Corps Art Collection).
