MISSIONProject Success-TRIO Student Support Services, provides a nurturing learning environment while assisting students in overcoming barriers through academic and personal support and resources, utilizing holistic approaches to help transition students to self-sufficiency through completion, and providing transfer support for students seeking bachelor’s degrees to self-sufficiency using holistic approaches.

QUICK FACTS• Project Success (TRIO) S.S.S. helps low income and first generation students, and students with disabilities with completion, and provides transfer support and guidance for students seeking bachelor’s degrees.

• Members of the program are active in their campus community through other organizations like Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa, and SAGA and hold leadership positions within these clubs and organizations.

• For many students, TRIO becomes their second family. Students support each other and develop lasting relationships.

MCC BYSTANDER INFORMATION

Concerns about a student related to Title IX or any health and safety matter may be submitted using an MCC Cares Report at mcckc.edu/mcc-cares. The report form provides space to describe the behaviors of concern and to attach any supporting materials (photos, writings, etc.). Questions about making a report may be directed to the campus Dean of Students offices. If you experience an emergency, contact the MCC Police Department at 816.604.1200 or call 911.

BE AWARE OF EVENTS AROUND YOU1TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WELL-BEING OF

EVERYONE IN THE COMMUNITY2STEP IN AND HELP OTHERS3

INTERVENESTEPS TO

MCC wants to create a campus environment where every member of our community feels included, valued and safe. We all play a critical role in identifying situations that have a potential for harm, and intervening if something doesn’t look or feel quite right.

Don’t just be a bystander—step in to protect people who need help. Your actions could prevent someone from becoming a victim of sexual assault.

SEPARATE Step in directly and separate the persons

involved.

If you feel comfortable, let them know your concerns and reasons for intervening

in the situation.

Be a friend—let them know that you’re stepping

in because you care about them.

DISTRACT Use a distraction to

re-direct the focus of one person elsewhere.

Use phrases such as “Hey, I need to talk to you” or “Hey, let’s go

somewhere else.”

If you need to, commit a “party foul” like spilling your drink on one of the

people you’re trying to separate.

RECRUIT Let some friends know

what’s going on and recruit their help.

Step in as a group and separate the persons involved.

SUPPORTIf the situation looks unsafe, call the MCC Police Department or 911 for assistance.

Clearly let the authority figure know your

concerns and stay present until help

arrives.

If you’re worried about a classmate, let someone know. When you submit an online MCC Cares report, a staff person will check on that person and, if needed, offer support and assistance. MCC Cares.

STARFISHStarfish is a tool that improves the way MCC supports student success. Faculty can support and encourage students through kudos for performance. Using Starfish, faculty and staff will engage students, who need different kinds of encouragement at different times. Starfish will assist students by keeping them

informed and prompting them to act when necessary.

HOW DOES IT WORK?Students, faculty and staff can access Starfish through their MyMCCKC account. Faculty can raise early alert flags for attendance concerns, low participation, missing assignments, low quiz and test scores, and other performance issues. College representatives will follow up with the student, address or resolve issues, and close the loop with the faculty who raised the early alert flag. You can receive kudos to recognize achievement and can ask for help from faculty in a particular course, or from staff

for non-course needs. It is teamwork in every sense of the word.

Flags: Things you need to improve to succeed

Kudos: Positive notices to keep up the good work

Referral: Directs a student to make an appointment or visit a particular service on campus

To-Do: Directs a student to complete a specific action, for example completing a career skills inventory or registering for a study skills seminar
