3festival informationKansas City FilmFest Competition

Of more than 100 films being shown at Kansas City FilmFest 2013, about two-thirds of them are partici-pating in competition. In addition to our competition films, we’ve scoured the globe to find other great films that haven’t yet made it to Kansas City. We call these “curated” films and they are not competing for awards at FilmFest.

The competition is the oldest part of the Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee, the nonprofit organization that presents FilmFest each year. In 1996, Jubilee founder Fred Andrews learned that Kansas City had an active and growing filmmaking community but there were few venues for filmmakers to show their work. As a result, Andrews launched the Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee which held its first festival in 1997.

Since then, the majority-volunteer run Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee has grown steadily, guided by the continuing leadership of its founder, a large number of filmmakers, and the Jubilee’s volunteer Board of Directors. The Jubilee received its 501(c)(3) designa-tion in June of 1998. More than $200,000 in cash and prizes have been awarded. More than 200 visiting film professionals have come to Kansas City to share their work and experiences.

The competition begun by the Jubilee remains intact even though the festival was expanded and renamed in 2009.

Award Categories Filmmakers can submit narrative, experimental, animation and documentary films in four competitive divisions. Awards are presented in each category:

US/International: Short and feature-length films.

Heartland: Short and feature-length films by Mis-souri and Kansas residents, present and past.

Heartland Student: Short and feature-length films by Missouri and Kansas students.

CinemaJAZZ: Short and feature-length films relating to jazz.

Joe Heyen, is the producer, director, and writer of the acclaimed docu-mentary Cowtown Ballroom…Sweet Jesus, one of the most successful films made in Kansas City. Perhaps you’d like to film a scene with someone flying? “Green Screen Made Easy” offers practical advice and Hol-lywood techniques covering how to create your own screen, light your subjects, manipulate the camera to get the best production footage, and utilize free and inexpensive software to get the desired finished effect. Chad Godfrey is a video pro-ducer, director, and owner of Home Video Studio of Lee’s Summit. Chad is a 50-time Hanley Award winner for Excellence in Video Production. .

Storyboarding in Animation and Film The first stage of any film or anima-tion production is the planning phase, and it is easily the most important. This workshop will introduce concepts and methods of visual pre-production techniques. Film and animators ages 8 to18 are invited to come to a pre-production workshop that focuses on story-boarding, which helps the director or animator plan their project. Tim-ing, point of view, shots and camera angles for clarity, variety, and inno-vation will be covered. the central park fiveIn 1989, five black and Latino teenagers were arrested and charged with brutally attacking and raping a white female jogger in Central Park. twenty feet from stardomWhat would a pop song be without the riffs, refrains, and harmonies of its backup vocalists? Although these singers are usually relegated to the margins, their work has defined countless songs. Twenty Feet from Stardom juxtaposes interviews with industry legends (Bruce Springsteen, Bette Midler, and others) and the relative unknowns who support them like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, and Judith Hill as they illuminate the art of melding their own distinct voices with lead vocals and reveal their desires for ca-reers as solo artists.
