If you have spare time, itwould be good to just roam around orexplore the campus to get to know the placebetter.

It should not be too difficult to find a place toeat on campus, although the lines during peakhours from 12:00 to 1:30 pm can getannoyingly long, and certain menu items mayrun out. Among others, the list of cateringoutlets includes:Centennial Campus: Grove (western dishes),Bijas (vegetarian), Super Congee (dim sumand noodles), Deli France (sandwiches andwestern dishes)University Street: UDeli (Asian lunchboxes);Starbucks (coffee and pastries), StudentUnion Canteen (cafeteria)Main Campus: Starbucks (coffee and pastries); Subway (sandwiches);Main Campus Chong Yuet Ming AmenitiesCentre: Cafe330 (organic dishes); CYMCanteen (cafeteria)Main Campus Fong Shu Chuen AmenitiesCentre: Ebeneezers (halal food); SwireCanteen(cafeteria)

Noworries, you probably will not need to enterthe Library that soon, but if you do, bringalong a copy of your offer letter and flash itto the security guard by the turnstiles. Tip: Get acquainted with the sections that youwill need the most (e.g. humanities resourceson 2/F, social sciences on 4/F). Find a spotthat you like to be at, as you will most likelyfind yourself bored in between classes, andyou can always head to your favourite spot torelax or study, when the finals arrive. You canalso opt in for alerts when new books andmaterials in your chosen subject arrive in theHKU Portal. Fun tip: The AV section on 1/F has a prettygood collection of movies that you can watchin the carrels or borrow for a week. Health Centre Private clinics cost from HKD200 up, whilepublic hospitals have queues up to 6 hours. Ifyou are sick, the University Health Service(UHS) is your best bet. Book an appointmentthe day before through the HKU Portal, andhead to Meng Wah Complex and follow thesigns. Tip: If you ever need to extend a deadline orskip a midterm due to sickness, you shouldget a medical certificate from UHS. But beprepared for the consequences such as extraweighting on your finals.

Academic Services Office Located between Runme Shaw Building andRun Run Shaw Building (i.e. opposite toSubway), this is a one-stop station fortranscript applications, submission of internaltransfer applications and other mattersrelated to certificates and testimonials. Bearin mind that transcripts require 10 workingdays to process, so time yourself.

To setup a bank account, HSBC requires you tomake an appointment, while BEA attends towalk-ins. However, you will require a proof ofaddress in your home country, your passport,a proof of residential address from theGeneral Office, a HKID and bank draft or cash. There are ATM machines next to these twobanks, and one next to the Run Run Shawentrance to CYM Amenities centre. Learn howto use these machines, you will pay yourschool bills and utility bills with them.

Quan Ji Wonton NoodlesBelcher’s Street, diagonally opposite to AromeBakery with a red and white signboardThis shop serves the fresh, succulent wontonnoodles for HKD15, and really is the place with thebest value for money. Add-ons like extra noodles, side of vegetables and soybean milk cost lessthan HKD8, making it one of the great budgetoptions here. What makes it a regular go-to placeis its proximity - straight from Smithfield intoBelchers.

Ming Chef RestaurantHau Wo Street This home-style place is your go-to place forweekend lunches – large portions, deliciousdishes and free soup. Their set lunch and teatime menus vary each week, usually rice withdifferent dishes or rice in soup. Nourishing, comforting and filling, this place serves adelectable selection of Cantonese food for lessthan HKD50.

Ba Fang Yun Ji Dumpling RestaurantBelcher’s Street The nearest place to satisfy a craving fordumplings, this restaurant offers four types ofdumplings – chives, pork, spicy Korean andvegetarian. Service is quick and their set menusoffer value for money. My recommendation – getthe Double Set with Wonton Soup. You get tendumplings, five of two kinds and six wontons forHKD34.

5. COMMUNITYLap-Chee College is situated in Kennedy Town at the western end of SaiWan on Hong Kong Island. Kennedy Town was named after the 7thGovernor of Hong Kong, Arthur Edward Kennedy. Kennedy Town is a convenient place to live. You may find the closestsupermarket, Wellcome, on your way to Kennedy Town MTR station.PARKnSHOP with a wider variety of daily necessities can be found onthe other side of the MTR station. In addition to international fast food chains, such as McDonald’s andKFC, there are also a number of local eateries in Kennedy Town. Here area few picks, but bear in mind that one man’s meat is another’s poison. Most of the places below do not come with English menus, but mosthave pictures on the walls – point and order usually works.

Shui Shang Ren Noodle ShopBelcher’s Street Also on Belcher’s Street, this noodle place offers awide variety of meatballs and fishballs to go withnoodles. You can get a really filling meal underHKD40 – go for the beef brisket noodles or thefishball noodles, add on a side of vegetables withoyster sauce and a bowl of fried fish skin. Thenproceed to have your typical Hong Kong meal.

Cheung Heung RestaurantBelcher’s Street This place sells baked pastries outside itspremises, making it a really convenient spot tograb some egg tarts and Polo buns for less thanHKD5 apiece. It closes by 6pm, so remember todrop by during day time.

Sun Hing Dim Sum The 3 a.m. dim sum place has acquired enoughravings and reviews so I’m just putting it on thislist because it deserves to be on this list. Line upand eat with a few friends to really be able to trytheir selection of pastries and buns.

ITYHing WahSmithfield Rd near intersection with Catchick St This tiny shoplot sells various pastries such assesame buns, baked red bean pastries etc butthey also sell curry fishballs and street snackscommonly found in Hong Kong. A great place tostop by to grab a quick snack before heading offsomewhere else. Closes in the late afternoons.

Tai Hing Thai RestaurantCatchick Street Insanely authentic and great Thai fare. The bestThai place in Kennedy Town, albeit pricey. Stirfriedgreens with garlic and chilli start at HKD48, buttheir Tom Yum Seafood Soup is heavenly. Beware, this is not a place for those who can’t stand spicyfood – almost every item here will make yousweat. Their pomelo salad is refreshing, and thebest way to enjoy is to come with a few friends, order what you see from the walls and sweat whileyou eat. An amazing place. Closed on Mondays.

Igawa Japanese RestaurantCatchick Street This slightly upscale place has the typicalselection of what you would expect from aJapanese restaurant that charges between HKD80to HKD120 for a person on average. Nice food, aslightly quieter ambience makes this an optionwhen you’re feeling fancy. Tip: avoid the vegetabletempura – HKD50 for 7 pieces

Ho Ho RestaurantBelcher’s Street, in the apartment building next toKFC Order their fried rice dishes or their noodle dishes– slightly larger portions than average at the sameprices, so you can easily get a hearty meal forless than HKD40. If you come in a large group, ajug of soya bean is on the house. They offer ahuge selection and combination of typical HongKong fare – there will be something for everyone.

Asia RestaurantNear the Post Office No, this place only sells local cuisine. From 2.30to 6.30pm, their tea time sets serve toast, hotdrinks, a variety of noodles for under HKD25,making it a quick budget meal. Their regularselections are expansive and their drinks arebetter than average. Recommended when youwant a traditional coffee shop ambience nearby.
