DOWNTOWN FAIRMONT

WELCOME TO MARION COUNTYMost of my life has been spent in Marion County. And it’s never, ever been dull.

But it's still the little memories that stand out. I remember waiting eagerly every Friday afternoon, in the brightness of spring and the chills of fall, for the bus from the Skate-A-Way. It ran out to Mannington and Farmington to pick us up for our own mini-skating marathons. We wouldn't head back until 10, and we'd skate for so long that it felt like the skates were still on, even on our way home.

I remember being dazzled by the blaze of the Fairview Fourth of July fireworks with the other kids, even our cotton candy taking a back seat to the blasts. I remember discovering the sensation of floating in Mannington Pool. I remember holding my breath while actors, as lost in their characters as I was, rolled out their stories on stage at Fairmont State University.

I have fond and funny memories from the goofy gals at Girl Scout Camp in Morris Park, and I still recall giggling late into the night around the 4-H campfires at Camp Mar Mac.

Yes, a lot has happened over the years, but these are the moments that turned into memories. Marion is full of these quaint, but powerful, chances to tuck away a laugh or a smile.

The memories of Marion County linger because they're a strong representation of what we want in life— the simple charms of a small town, big dreams and people willing to extend the hand to get you there. This is where you uncover the little moments that remind you why you have hope for your future, for small business, for tradition and for your budding family.

I am proud to be raising my family here, where I can share these little nostalgias, so I know my children are growing up instilled with a sense of value, and a sense of wonder.

I invite you all to make these memories in Marion, and to share them like I am now. This place is simply a crossing for the bonds we form in it, and the memories we build here, whether it's through a whole lifetime, or just a single day.

Weave yourself into our small, but thriving story. It’s a long-form fairy tale we’re writing day by day.

Enjoy!Leisha Elliott, CVB of Marion County

War The Civil War not only ripped apart a nation; it separated states and formed the new, independent West Virginia. Marion County holds several mementos from this turbulent turning point of our nation. Start your journey at the Marion County Convention & Visitor’s

Bureau, and you’ve not only got the insider’s peek at the best

of what’s going on in and around Marion— you’ve also already

checked one of the historical landmarks off your list.

The CVB building is actually restructured from the former

Marion County Children’s Shelter. Standing tall since

1941, the original building was one of the Works Progress

Administration’s (WPA) final projects in the state.

When the historic site was in the pathway for the construction

of the Gateway Connector road, the efforts to preserve it began.

Could we move the entire building? We wanted to try it, but the

building wasn’t sound enough to be moved in its entirety.

But with the help of the Federal Highway Administration, we

could reuse the carved stone of the exterior to create another

soon-to-be central cultural beacon for Marion: our Visitor

Center. So, carefully the structure was pulled apart, chiseling

out each piece, stone by stone, and re-built to welcome visitors

to Marion County.

We know, that’s a lot of work. But being proud of Marion’s

heritage is at the heart of our mission, and we were glad to be

able to preserve a little piece of history from this place we hold

so dear.

The Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 am

until 4:30 pm, and on Saturdays from Memorial Day through

Labor Day 10 am until 2 pm.

The football and basketball coaches at Fairview High School and North Marion High School were instrumental in sparking the passion of Rich Rodriguez, former head football coach of West Virginia University and current head coach at University of Arizona.

Rich said his friendships and successful early sports career in Marion County were a big part of his upbringing. He competed in football, basketball and baseball, immersing himself in sports year-round.

Picking up the pigskin when he was only 7, Rich worked up to a spot as wingback and defensive

back at North Marion High. He said his high school coaches became the most influential

people in his sports career.

Outside of the competitive arena, Rich said he really enjoyed Marion County's local restaurants, especially Muriale's Italian Restaurant, a staple of the community for

more than 40 years. Muriale's is known for its superb, authentic red sauce and homemade Italian ingredients, like sausage and salad dressings.

True to his love of competitive play, he also gave a shoutout to the local sports outlet, recommending visitors check out Fairmont State University.

Arguably today’s best coach in college football, Nick Saban of the University of Alabama, (and former head coach of the Miami Dolphins, LSU, and other teams) grew up in Marion County.

The first college coach to win national titles at two different schools and at one time the highest-paid coach in the industry, Nick has molded many teams into champions. But his football prowess began when he was quarterback at Monongah High School, where he and his teammates took the State Champion title, a memory Nick said was one of his most treasured.

He still loves to visit for a home-cooked meal, but also boasted about his hometown’s restaurants.

“You can’t forget Muriale’s Italian Restaurant … and hitting all of those

fabulous hot dog and pepperoni stands, too!”

But Nick said there were more important things to try in Marion, too, like learning more about the coal ties

and the history of that industry.

“Coal mining is an industry of which way too few people have way too little knowledge or appreciation,” he said. “I would love to see the State of West Virginia and its counties better promote the business via tours and education programs to enlighten the masses of the intricacies of the

work and how it shaped the United States as we all know it today.”

Visitors can learn about Marion’s coal history at the Marion County Historical Society and Museum, the Mining Museum at Coal Country Mini Golf, or visit the grounds of a former coal baron at the High Gate Carriage House.

Many of our restaurants have been perfecting their craft for more than 50 years in the same location. The old-fashioned diners are still sliding milkshakes down the bar to their regulars. Hot dog joints still garnish

their weenies with hearty chili and slaw. The authentic Italian restaurants still top their noodle dishes with secret family sauces. And those time-tested Italian eateries have blended their authentic cuisine with some Appalachian ingenuity, baking up pepperoni rolls, a dish unique to West Virginia that sprung from Marion County. Eateries adapt this simple concept differently, with spicy, sweet flavors or eclectic toppings.

Unless you’ve been to West Virginia to try a pepperoni roll, you probably don’t know what it is. The pepperoni roll is a simple, but delicious treat, and you can’t get it anywhere else.

While other stores use snacks and candy to tempt you at the checkout line, our convenience stores entice with this soft, cheese-oozing snack. We love them here so much, we’ve named them the official “State Food.”

The recipe for this state secret began here in Marion County, in a little bakery in Fairmont, Country Club Bakery, in the 1920’s. That little shop is still pulling fresh, warm pepperoni rolls out of its oven each day.

“We’re the original, so we take pride in our product,” said Chris Pallotta, owner of the bakery. “We make sure we make them all day, every day. Every pepperoni roll you buy from us is made within the hour.”

The flavor of a pepperoni roll grabs you, and the cravings for its gooey goodness call out to first-timers so intensely, Chris said they sometimes call immediately after they leave to order a supply to be sent home. The Country Club Bakery ships out orders several times a week, sending the treat to avid fans across all 50 states.

People flock to the bakery to try the original, but other restaurants in Fair-mont and Marion County also serve up their own variations on the state staple. You’ll find them spicy, bite-sized, double-filled and stuffed with unique ingredients.

Try each chef’s special recipe on your own pepperoni roll tour through Fairmont, the “Pepperoni Roll Capital of the World.” Some other must-stops with their own unique rolls are Colasessano’s Pizza, Mario’s NY Style Pizza and Mazza’s.

pepperonI roLL reCIpe

Want to get a little taste of a pepperoni roll? The restaurants don’t share their secret recipes, but until you can make it to Marion to try the original, you can make a simplified version at home!

What you’ll need:• crescent rolls• package of sliced pepperoni• string cheese

The recipe is simple: in each crescent triangle, lay out several slices of pepperoni. On top of that, add a portion of string cheese. Then roll and bake according to the package.

Enjoy it while it’s still warm! Yes, it’s a simple substitute, and it won’t be nearly as appetizing as the real thing, but it will offer some insight into our fanatical love of this amazing snack. Hopefully it will hold you over till you can get a taste of an authentic West Virginia pepperoni roll!

United States Senator Joe Manchin and his wife, Gayle, are among those that chose to make their homes in Mari-on County. Gayle recalled her fondest memories were of the couple taking their children to the Tygart River during the summers.

“We taught all of our children how to water ski on the river,” she said. “We tubed, swam, picnicked, and for many years enjoyed the Water Ski Show at Wood’s Boat House. During those shows, local young people did barefoot skiing, dance line rou-tines, clown acts-- they were very professional and extremely talented.”

The Manchins have taken up residence along the riverbank, and Gayle said they still enjoy coming home to relive their upbringing and reminisce about mem-

ories from Marion County with their families.

“Our time together always includes retelling stories of the Farmington Farmers, and fishing in Buffalo Creek, as we share the wonderful recipes handed down from Mama Kay,” she said.

The Manchins also like to share and show off their favorite Marion County attractions to their loved ones when they come to town.

“We always took friends and family who came to visit down to the fort on the pontoon boat, where we sometimes had dinner at the fort and enjoyed their outdoor drama,” Gayle said. “I particularly enjoyed the Christmas Market at [Pricketts] Fort, and seeing the vol-unteers in their traditional dress of the time.”THe ManCHIns

"When I make difficult decisions in the Secretary of State's office, I often think of how it might affect those people in Marion County," said Natalie Tennant, who began her journey here.

"I ask myself, ‘Can I go back to the farm and explain to them why I did what I did. Will they understand?’” "They are my conscious and my compass." Tennant has been serving as the West Virginia Secretary of State since 2009, but fondly remembers her Marion upbringing. In her position, she often spreads her hometown pride by sharing pepperoni rolls. She even served them up at the Inauguration Day ceremonies in 2009 and 2013.

Previously a TV reporter, Tennant had often showcased the treat. She said her mother used to make them when she was growing up. "I thought my mom came up with the idea of the pepperoni roll, and didn't really know that they sold them until I was around 10 or 11," she said.

As a girl, Tennant reminisced about helping her mom make pepperoni rolls. "I always thought it was so difficult to cut the pepperoni into sticks," she said. "I wasn't good at that, but wanted to help roll them up. Which I wasn't good at, either."

Tennant boasted other points of pride as a Marion Countian. "I think vis-itors should come to Fairview during the 4th of July Celebration and get into the cake walk, visit the crafts, watch the parade and listen to the music," she said.

She also recommended Pricketts Fort to "get a real feel for what it was like as this state and country developed."

She herself still likes to get back to her roots and visit the family farm, enjoying cookouts and playful teasing with her siblings and loved ones.

A perfect 10! Mary Lou Retton had just been given a perfect score in the

vault, the last event of the 1984 Olympic Women's All-Around. It earned

her the gold. She was the first U.S. gymnast to ever take the title at the

event, and in fact, the first who was not from Eastern Europe.

She racked up several medals in her career, eventually earning a spot in

the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Though retired, she contin-

ues to inspire young women around the world.

An incredible champion, Mary Lou's love of gymnastics sprouted right

here in Marion County. She was reared here, tumbling through the gym

in Fairmont, until she left to train for the Olympics at 14.

She moved to Texas for training, attended school there and eventually got

married and settled down. But she continued to visit frequently over the

years, sharing her fond memories of Fairmont with her family, wishing

she lived closer to her loved ones and home again.

During one trip home for the holidays, her husband, Shannon Kelley,

a former quarterback for the University of Texas, gave her a grand gift:

he'd built a completely furnished home for them here in Fairmont, and

kept it a secret until it was ready. He had accepted a coaching position at

Fairmont State, and they were finally moving home!

Though she has since moved back to Texas, Mary Lou Retton still visits

her beloved hometown.
