Of the 1,197 men on board the USS Indianapolis on the early morning of July 30, 1945, only 317 sur- vivedonly 317 saw the Second World War end sev- eral days later thanks to their efforts. James ODonnell, a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Indianapolis, is a survivor of the ordeal and one of only about a hundred crew members still alive today. He recently contributed to Only 317 The USS Indian- apolis sailed off the Mare Island Navy Yard in California on July 10, 1945, after her final overhaul and repair of combat damage. Twenty days later, she would be resting on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean after being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Survived!, a book of the collected stories of many of the survivors of the USS Indianapolis. Now he, like many other Americans, is watching the impending war with Iraq with great concern. Thousands of U.S. military troops are being sent to the Middle East and Americans are preparing for possible ter- rorist attacks at home by buying duct tape and plastic sheeting. Although he hopes for a peaceful reso- lution, ODonnell seems resigned to the fact that war now seems certain. Its not good, but I guess theres going to have to be something done, he said. John Gromosiak of Indianapolis, an active member of the USS Indianapolis Survivors Organization (though himself a veteran of the Korean War), said that war should always be the last resort, but said there seems to be no alternative now. The blasts triggered a complete elec- trical failure and the crew was unable to call for help. water.For those men, the trial was just begin-

ning.Remembering those days, O�Donnell

said that faith and hope played a crucialrole.

�No matterwhat you�redoing,� he said,�if you give upor lose faith orhope, why,you�re just notgoing to makeit.�

And so, hiseyes burningwith oil, theyoungO�Donnellresolved that hewas going tomake it through

this. Like the others, he thought that helpwas on the way.

But, in fact, it was not.The dawn of the first day revealed no

rescuers and as time went on the sur-vivors began to drift, in groups, milesapart.

�We faced our worst nemesis the firstmorning in the sea,� he wrote. �Sharkswere in the area and had started to attackthe defenseless men. The crew was scat-tered. We were in groups of 10 or 15. Youhad to stay in a group. If you didn�t, thesharks would get you.�

By the second day, O�Donnell said thatthe people were praying out loud. Planeswere flying high above them but took nonotice.

Gromosiak recalled the stories of aCatholic chaplain who swam from sur-vivor to survivor to encouraging them.

On the third day, the chaplain perished.O�Donnell never saw him.

Other men report that God was alwayswith them, and that the power of prayerwas what saved them.

�By the third day, the elements and thesharks had exacted their toll on the sur-vivors,� he wrote. �Now, after 72 hours,

nearly half were gone. After so much timein the water, some of the men gave up.They would duck their head under thewater and drink the salt water. After aboutfour hours, they were gone.

�Men began to hallucinate. In othergroups, men were found lifeless in theirvests. Removing the life vests from thedead and passing them to the living wascommon,� he recalled.

Other men reported people swimmingoff to mirage islands, or claiming that theyswam to the bottom and had seen theIndianapolis. Still others reported friendsthat simply gave up in the face of suchseemingly hopeless circumstances.

�The thought of giving up was incon-ceivable,� O�Donnell wrote. �I wasn�tgoing to give up no matter what. I wantedto live. No matter how tight the spot, youcan never give up.�

After 100 hours of torment, a PV-1Ventura bomber on routine submarinepatrol spotted the men. Within hours, theUSS Doyle and the USS Bassett arrived.

�The men were too weak after nearlyfive days in the elements to rejoice or cel-ebrate,� O�Donnell wrote. �Some wereincoherent and did not realize they werebeing rescued. Some drowned whileattempting to swim to rescue boats.�

O�Donnell was pulled onto the Bassett,and by the fall of 1945 was back homeand had taken a position with theIndianapolis Fire Department.

As for his faith, he said that the eventsof 1945 didn�t change much. �I�ve alwaysbeen a strong Catholic,� he said.

�My personal opinion was the ones thatwere saved, the good Lord had his arm ontheir shoulder,� he said.

Gromosiak suggested that O�Donnellwas spared to keep the story of the Indian-apolis alive, but he dismissed the idea.

�You don�t know why you were theone that was saved, you just were, that�sall,� he said.

Nevertheless, O�Donnell has beenactive in informing a new generationabout his lost shipmates, and played a keyrole in the building of the USSIndianapolis memorial in Indianapolis. Itwas a role that won him the title �Man ofthe Year� in 1995 from The IndianapolisStar and News.

O�Donnell believes that, when it comes

down to it, the young people of the mod-ern day will do their duty�as he did�todefend the homeland, but he added that itwill not be with the same eagerness as hisgeneration.

�We were just coming out of a depres-sion,� he said, �and nobody had anything.At least you�d get a meal [in the military].A piece of bread with some mustard on itwas a meal. I don�t think many people�schildren today would go for somethinglike that unless they were starving.�

�There�s a lot of good kids,�Gromosiak said. �It�s just that they�venever had to have the sacrifices a lot of usolder people had to make.�

�Well, that�s our fault,� O�Donnell said.He is the father of four and the grandfa-ther of 11. �We didn�t want ours to have itas bad as we had it, and ours don�t wanttheirs to have it as bad as they had it. It�sjust an up-step generation, that�s all.�

He said that the crew of theIndianapolis made a large sacrifice fortheir delivery of the atomic bomb.

�Sometimes, when you do somethingdrastic, you pay a price,� he said. In thiscase, that price was a �great ship� and880 men.

O�Donnell said that he has gotten manycompliments about Only 317 Survived!The 517-page book shows the severityand struggle of those five days fromnumerous perspectives�all of them theperspectives of the last survivors.

�There�s so much about it,� O�Donnellsaid. �If you weren�t there, you�ll neverknow.�

Students at St. Joan of Arc School inIndianapolis were stunned to learn thatthe pope knew about what they had doneto help hungry children.

Students raised $1,250 for the WorldFood Program that will go to a schoolprogram for hungry children across theworld.

Jim Morris, executive director of theWorld Food Program, a branch of theUnited Nations, came to the Indianapolisschool on Feb. 21 to receive the checkand present the students with an apostolicblessing from Pope John Paul II.

The framed blessing will hang in thehalls of St. Joan of Arc School .

Morris, who works in Rome, metrecently with the pope about the WorldFood Program. The two spoke about theneeds of children throughout the worldand the necessity of bringing God�s mes-sage of love to them.

During the meeting, Morris told thepope about his upcoming visit to St. Joanof Arc School, where his daughter,Jennifer Schaefer, is the assistant princi-pal.

�The Holy Father has sent a messagethat he loves you and that God loves you.That is pretty important stuff,� Morris said.

The students agreed.�I was so surprised,� said Gabrielle

Bibeau, an eighth-grader and a member ofthe parish. �I never even thought hewould tell the pope.�

The students also didn�t know thattheir money will be used to help feedmore than 5,000 children in the world.

�What you have done is help feed chil-dren who are so hungry, so poor and needso much help,� Morris said. �You have

president of Lilly Endowment Inc. andchairman of the board of the IndianaWater Co. Originally from Terre Haute,he later settled in Indianapolis.

Schaefer, St. Joan of Arc�s assistantprincipal, said she hopes to continue thetradition of St. Joan of Arc students help-ing others.

�I think it�s important to help otherkids around he world,� Schaefer said.�It�s important to understand how fortu-nate we are to have food, and this is anopportunity to help someone else.�

Third-grader Derrick Morris said help-ing other children and being acknowl-edged by the pope was �a blessing andsomething that not everyone gets to do.�

Morris told the students that it�s whenhelping others that you feel the best aboutyourself.

He remembers collecting money forthe Red Cross as a child, and continued tohelp others.

Before becoming executive director ofthe World Food Program, Morris was the

shown love for them and that they areGod�s children just like you are. They justaren�t as fortunate as you.�

Morris spoke about his recent trip toAfrica, where hunger is great, especiallyamong girls. He shared a story of a 14-year-old girl in Zambia who takes careof five siblings�all undernourished andpoor.

Morris said it�s children such as thatlittle girl that St. Joan of Arc studentshave reached out to help.

St. Joan of Arc has 173 students whoraised the $1,250. They did it through acarnival and �kiss the pig� contest.

Piggy banks were set in each class-room, where students donated pennies,dimes and nickels. The class that raisedthe most money got to see their teacherkiss a pig. The runner-up class teacherhad to hug the pig.

Schaefer said the idea for the WorldFood Program started during CatholicSchools Week because the theme was�Making a World of Difference.� Studentsused the special week to raise the entireamount.

As students learned about differentcountries that week, they also incorpo-rated their learning into a carnival.

Each student paid a dime to play suchgames such as the cakewalk or pin the haton the pope. They also could buy conces-sion items for a dime.

Samantha Taylor, a sixth-grader at theschool, said giving students a chance tomix having fun and raising money was agood idea.

�I felt involved,� she said. �I felt Icould really help them if we all workedtogether.�

CLARKSVILLE�Catholic highschool students are taking the story linethey are performing for their spring musi-cal off stage to help their community.

Students at Our Lady of ProvidenceJr./Sr. High School in Clarksville areusing their performance of Les Miserablesas a way to help disadvantaged children atthe Providence House in New Albany.

�I think this experience, while overallit may be difficult to understand whatthese kids are going through, will help mestrengthen my relationship with God,�said Tristin Jones, a senior from NewAlbany. �I think this will help me minis-ter to other people.�

Providence House is a state-licensedgroup home for foster children ages 6 to21. It is a ministry of the Sisters ofProvidence, whose motherhouse is nearTerre Haute.

Dale Durham, director of the

performing arts department and the springmusical for the high school, hopes all stu-dents will learn how to minister to othersbetter and learn to appreciate their bless-ings.

�This will make the students moreaware of people in the community whoneed help,� Durham said. �It will helpthem give back because much has beengiven to us through this school.�

The musical is set in Paris during theFrench Revolution and tells the story ofJean Valjean, who steals a loaf of bread tofeed his starving family and spends19 years in prison for his crime.

Afterward, he steals some silverwarefrom a bishop who gave him lodging.Captured by police and brought back tothe bishop, the bishop states that the sil-verware was a gift and gives him an addi-tional set of candlesticks. The bishop tellshim to use the silver to become an honestman.

This time of year, the gray ofwinter wears on us and welong for the first crocus bloom.Ash Wednesday is welcome

because in the natural order ofthings the approaching 40 days ofLent are the first harbinger of spring.

In the supernatural order, the40 days of Lent signal Easter andthe solemnity of the Resurrection.Spring and Easter mean hope andlift the spirit. Winter isn�t forever�naturally or spiritually. At least itdoesn�t have to be so, because itisn�t so. Yet, if we are to experiencethe new spring of Easter fully weneed to enter into a time of reflec-tion on the true meaning of life inChrist.

We pass through winter on ourway to spring. Jesus spent 40 days inthe wilderness before beginning hispublic ministry on his way toJerusalem, and ultimately on his wayup to the Mount of Olives and theMount of Calvary�to the supremeact of our redemption.

The number 40 is symbolic and itis packed with meaning. In his 40days in the wilderness, it is as ifJesus resumes the 40 years in thewilderness of the chosen people ofIsrael on their way to the PromisedLand. The 40 days in the wilderness,like Israel�s 40 years in the desert, isthe time for learning, for prepara-tion, for growth. It was so for Jesusas it was for the chosen people.

So the 40 days of Lent areintended for us to be once again atime for learning, for preparationand for growth.

In a recently published book, Godand the World (Ignatius Press,2002), Cardinal Joseph Ratzingerremarks that the wilderness experi-ence of Jesus teaches us that withouta period of renunciation, of steppingaside for quiet and recollection, nogreat mission can fully ripen.

Cardinal Ratzinger writes:�Fasting and praying, Jesus faces upto the whole abysmal emptiness ofthe wilderness. It symbolizes, on onehand, a special meeting with God,but at the same time the dangers ofthe world. It is the place where thereis no life, no nourishment, the placeof solitudes. Thus he walks throughthe whole world of perils, of humanfailure, of abandonment, the wilder-ness of hunger and thirst. At thesame time Jesus takes upon himselfhuman temptations; he suffers themhimself, so as to start from there inbringing his great Word and sublime

message� (p. 252).It is his preparation to win the

battle for true love once and for all.The pattern of Jesus� 40 days in

the wilderness suggests our patternfor the 40 days of Lent. The Churchurges us to take up the austerity offasting and time apart for reflectiveprayer. The Church proposes these40 days as a time for special meet-ings with God as it was for Jesus insymbolic recollection of the chosenpeople�s 40 years in the desert. TheChurch invites us to go deeper intoourselves during these 40 days inorder to probe the deeper meaningof life.

It is no accident that the imagesof wilderness and desert are pre-sented to us for this special time ofgrace. Wilderness and suffering area real part of life, although to say sois truly countercultural. Rightly,Pope John Paul II reminds us:�Suffering is a part of the mysteryof being human.� But he doesn�t justmean the bad things that can and dohappen to us in life.

As Cardinal Ratzinger says,�Anyone who really wanted to getrid of suffering would have to getrid of love before anything else,because there can be no love with-out suffering, because it alwaysdemands an element of self-sacri-fice, because, given temperamentaldifferences and the drama of situa-tions, it will always bring with itrenunciation and pain. When weknow that the way of love�thisexodus, this going out of oneself�isthe true way by which man becomeshuman, then we also understand thatsuffering is the process throughwhich we mature� (ibid. p. 322).

Cardinal Ratzinger calls suffering�the inner side of love� (p. 323).

This Lent, as we commemoratethe Passion of Christ, will we recog-nize his suffering as the inner sideof his love for us? In this recogni-tion, we will find the special graceto go deeper into our own inner sideof love.

Through the special observancesof fasting, abstinence and extraprayer, we are given the opportunityto purify our lives of selfishness andthe tendency merely to live on thesurface of life. Lent is a gift fordeepening our spiritual and moralmaturity by rooting out the self-cen-teredness that truly darkens life likethe grayest days of winter.

Thank God for the new crocusbloom! �

In a recent column, ArchbishopDaniel M. Buechlein recalled thewords of Pope Paul VI �when he

appeared before the United NationsGeneral assembly and gave the ringingcry in French: �Jamias la guerre!Jamias la guerre! Never again, war!War, never again!� The pope�s wordswere not simply an intellectual argu-ment against international conflict. Theywere a cry for peace uttered from thevery soul of humanity to world leaderswho, presumably, were in a position tomake a difference.

That was the 1960s and there was nopeace�especially in Vietnam, in theMiddle East, on the African continentand in Northern Ireland. Even in regionsof the world that were untouched by theimmediate horrors of war, there was theever-present threat of a global nuclearcatastrophe (the Cold War). To many,Pope Paul�s entreaty was simply a pioussentiment, one of a growing number ofanti-war slogans. In the context of thetimes, the pope�s cry for peace (like hisdefense of human life, Humanae Vitae)seemed hopelessly naïve. In reality, itwas the wisdom of bitter human experi-ence gained through many ages of point-less and destructive conflicts among thenations and peoples of the world.

For the past 25 years, Pope JohnPaul II has continued his predecessor�scry for peace. On every possible occa-sion, and in every region of the world,he has repeated the ringing phrase:�War, never again! Never again, war!�

This pope�s cry for peace is accom-panied by a consistent call for the re-ordering of human society. Noting thatthe world community �has not yet suc-ceeded in establishing, as alternatives towar, effective means for the resolutionof international conflicts,� Pope JohnPaul II has repeatedly argued for a newsocial order.

The pope�s vision is of an

international community of peoples.This new worldwide social structurewould respect the genuine and authen-tic differences among peoples of theworld, but it would also ensure justice,human dignity and the authentic devel-opment of individuals and communitieseverywhere�in accordance with God�swill and the dictates of Natural Law.

Is this a hopelessly naïve utopianvision: A new world order based onfreedom and justice that could bring anend to international conflict, terrorismand inhumanity in all its forms? PopeJohn Paul II, who survived the horrorsof Nazism, communism and a very per-sonal terrorist attack, and who hasworked tirelessly to oppose evil andoppression in all its forms, doesn�tthink so.

Building on a tradition of Catholicsocial teaching that now spans threecenturies, the pope argues passionatelyfor peace through just social, economicand political structures on a worldwidescale. Without hesitation, Pope JohnPaul II calls this challenge�to reordersociety in order to make peace possi-ble��the most urgent problem theinternational community has yet toresolve.�

Disciples of Jesus Christ are calledto believe that peace is possible evenwhen it seems most hopeless. So, insolidarity with our pope, our arch-bishop and people of good will every-where, we dare to seem naïve andutopian. We call for a new social orderdedicated to justice and human dignityfor all members of the human family.

And we cry: �Never again, war!War, never again!�

al miércoles de ceniza porque deacuerdo al orden natural de las cosas,los siguientes 40 días de la cuaresmason el primer presagio de la primavera.

En el orden sobrenatural, los 40 díasde la Cuaresma señalan la Pascua y lasolemnidad de la Resurrección.Primavera y Pascua significanesperanza y elevan el espíritu. Debemos atravesar el invierno parallegar a la primavera. Jesús pasó 40días en el desierto antes de comenzarsu ministerio, avanzando haciaJerusalén y finalmente ascendiendo alMonte de los Olivos y al Monte delCalvario, de camino al acto supremode nuestra redención.

El número 40 es simbólico y estácargado de significados. En estos 40días en el desierto, Jesús parecieraresumir los 40 años que pasó el puebloescogido de Israel en el desierto en posde la Tierra Prometida. Los 40 días enel desierto, al igual que los 40 años deIsrael, representan un período deaprendizaje, de preparación, decrecimiento. Así fue para Jesús, al igualque para el pueblo escogido.

Así que los 40 días de la Cuaresmadeben ser, una vez más, una época paraaprender, prepararnos y crecer.

Es su preparación para ganardefinitivamente la batalla del amorverdadero.

El ejemplo de los 40 días de Jesúsen el desierto nos sugiere el patrón aseguir durante los 40 días de laCuaresma. La Iglesia nos exhorta aadoptar la austeridad del ayuno yrecogimiento para dedicarnos a laoración reflexiva. La Iglesia presentaestos 40 días como un momentoespecial para reunirnos con Dios, comolo fue para Jesús en remembranzasimbólica de los 40 años del puebloescogido en el desierto. La Iglesia nosinvita a ahondar dentro de nosotrosmismos durante estos 40 días parapoder explorar el significado másprofundo de la vida.

No es casual que este períodoespecial de gracia esté representado através de las imágenes del desierto. Eldesierto y el sufrimiento son una partereal de la vida, a pesar de que admitirlosea verdaderamente adversoculturalmente. Con mucha razón, elPapa Juan Pablo II nos recuerda: �Elsufrimiento es parte del misterio de lahumanidad.� Pero no se refieresolamente a las cosas malas quepueden ocurrir y nos ocurren en lavida.

Como dice el Cardenal Ratzinger:�cualquiera que en verdad quieradeshacerse del sufrimiento tendrá quedeshacerse del amor antes que nada,porque no puede existir amor sinsufrimiento, ya que siempre requiereun elemento de auto sacrificio, porquedadas las diferencias temperamentalesy el dramatismo de la situación,siempre traerá consigo renunciación ydolor. Cuando entendemos que elcamino del amor, ese éxodo, ir más alláde sí mismo, es el verdadero caminopara llegar a ser humanos, entoncestambién entendemos que el sufrimientoes el proceso a través del cualmaduramos.�

El Cardenal Ratzinger llama alsufrimiento �el lado interno del amor�(p. 323).

En esta Cuaresma, al recordar laPasión de Cristo, ¿podremos reconocersu sufrimiento como el lado interno desu amor hacia nosotros? Al reconoceresto encontraremos la gracia especialpara profundizar en nuestro propio ladointerno del amor.

A través del cumplimiento delayuno, la abstinencia y la oración, senos da la oportunidad de purificarnuestras vidas del egoísmo y latendencia a vivir la vidasuperficialmente. La Cuaresma es unregalo para ahondar en nuestramadurez espiritual y moral, desterrandoel egoísmo que verdaderamenteoscurece nuestras vidas como los díasmás grises del invierno.

¡Agradezcámosle a Dios por losnuevos retoños de azafrán! �

A call to rally suppor t forthe Church and clergy

We lay Catholics should do somethingpublic to support our Church and priests.

The media surely does things publiclyto criticize them. Why aren�t we up andfighting for them publicly? Maybe it�s theIrish in me, but I can�t be content to onlypray for our Church and the priesthood. Ifpraying was all St. Vincent de Paul,St. John Bosco and Mother Teresa and somany others did, where would we be?

I am not a leader, but can be a veryenthusiastic follower. Aren�t there anyCatholic organizations or influential peoplewho could organize some kind of publicdemonstration of love and support andfaith in our Church and priests? Our priestscan�t hardly do it, so it�s up to us asdevout, loving and grateful lay Catholicsto do something so the world will know.

We did something special in 2000 forthe Jubilee to show our love for ourChurch in Indiana. Why can�t we dosomething public again to support ourpriests and the priesthood? Surely it can�tbe too much trouble and effort.

Telling the truth about themeaning of ‘pro-choice’

It has occurred to me that the designa-tion of the term �pro-choice� gives a falseinterpretation of its true meaning.

As a matter of information forCatholics and non-Catholics who are�pro-choice,� the only true choice

involved is whether or not a man andwoman decide to engage in sexual activ-ity, which may or may not result in preg-nancy.

If pregnancy is the result, the choicehas already been made. Taking the �pro-choice� stance actually means death tothe baby. Otherwise, they would be pro-life. That fact seems very simple for meand easy for anyone with reasonableintelligence to understand.

Even though they try to excuse them-selves from committing murder by call-ing the baby an �it� or a �fetus,� it�s ababy that is alive and will be called ababy if allowed to live.

I believe that pro-life advocates wouldconvey a much stronger message by cor-rectly identifying �pro-choice� advocatesas �pro-death� advocates, which is whatthey really are. Their only intention is tokill the baby, either at conception or atany time during the woman�s pregnancy.Ruth Grannan, Indianapolis

Is war the answer?Many Catholics approve the action of

going to war with the Iraqi dictatorSaddam Hussein. Hecontinually has defiedthe United Nations�mandate to disarm.These Catholics agreethat Hussein should bedeposed.

Others see the U.S.government�s desire toremove this ruthlessdictator from power as

a power play to control the world�s oilsupply. Motivated by religious principles,they want peace not war. But do theywant peace at any price?

The majority of U.S. Catholics willaccept war reluctantly, but only as the lastresort. They stand with the pope, and sodo I.

Pope John Paul II has been doingeverything he can to keep the peace. Heinsists that war must be the very lastresort. He has always been a champion ofpeace, urging diplomacy above warcountless times during his pontificate. Heteaches us that we are all brothers and sis-ters, and that Jesus calls us to be peace-makers.

The questions remain, however, afteryou�ve tried diplomacy time and timeagain for 11 years only to find noncom-pliance, when the last resort is reached.Hussein was an unjust aggressor whoinvaded Kuwait. He was defeated andwas allowed to stay in power provided hewould disarm. He continually evaded thejust demands of the United Nations as ittried to get him to open up and allow theinspectors to do their job.

He claims he has disarmed. Cautiousobservers want to give him the benefit ofthe doubt. They say the inspectors needmore time. Do we give them days, weeks,months or years? Hussein already has had11 years to show good faith.

This is a man who was the only chiefof state in the world who did not

denounce the 9/11 terrorist attacks on theUnited States. He is also the only leaderwho has publicly joined with the terroristsin calling the Arab world to rise upagainst Americans everywhere. His realintentions are no secret.

How much more time do we need?When does the last resort come?

When terrorists destroyed the TwinTowers and attacked the Pentagon onSept. 11, 2002, they rejoiced, calling it adeclaration of war. America is now at warwith an unjust aggressor. The terroristsattacked us first. Hussein has not disasso-ciated himself from them. He is a threatto all of us.

Granted, this is a different kind of war.There is an enemy living undergroundamong us. To their shame, this enemyeven has denounced the good Muslims inAmerica who want to live in peace withtheir neighbors.

How do we wage a just war against thereal enemy and spare the innocent?

The just-war theory as we know it wasdesigned in an era when armies foughtagainst armies to conquer nations. It isoutdated in today�s circumstances. Wehave to re-examine the guidelines. Eachof us must think this through.

Vatican Council II states that �con-science is the most secret core and sanc-tuary of the person ... where one is alonewith God and there in one�s innermostself perceives God�s voice� (PastoralConstitution on the Church in the ModernWorld, 16).

Dorothy Day influenced my con-science greatly in my early years. I knewher, admired her and even followed her,calling myself a pacifist. However, I wasnever an absolute pacifist, as she was. Ibelieved that Hitler had to be stopped.And I believe today that Saddam Husseinmust be stopped as well.

The question is, When?

He pointed out that Christians sharethe ancient practice of fasting with menand women of other faiths.

�With them, Christians want to stripthemselves of all pride and prepare them-selves to receive from God the greatestand most necessary gifts, in particular thegift of peace,� he said.

In praying for Mary to guide the prayerand fasting initiative, the pope quotedfrom the beatitudes, �Blessed are thepeacemakers, for they will be called chil-dren of God.� He said that invocationneeds to resound with new force intoday�s world and find practical applica-tion. �

Blair, an Anglican, arrived at theVatican with his wife, a Catholic, andthree of their four children. He met alonewith the pope for 30 minutes, then held alonger meeting with the Vatican secretaryof state, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, and theVatican�s foreign minister, ArchbishopJean-Louis Tauran.

A Vatican statement after the meetingmade it clear that the Church leaders hadnot changed their thinking on the war. Itsaid the pope had expressed to Blair �thewish that every effort be made to spare theworld new divisions in resolving the gravesituation in Iraq.�

It said the pope and his aides hademphasized the need for all sides to coop-erate with the United Nations and utilizethe �resources offered by internationallaw, in order to forestall the tragedy of awar that is still considered avoidable bymany parties.

�Special attention was given to thehumanitarian situation of the Iraqi people,who have already suffered greatly duringthe long years of the embargo,� it said.

It was Blair�s first meeting with Pope

�In addition, there could be retaliationagainst Christians, who are considered asallies of Western powers,� he said.

At the United Nations, the Vatican rep-resentative again laid out the Church�smain arguments against a military attackon Iraq. Archbishop Celestino Miglioretold the Security Council on Feb. 19 that,with �the wealth of peaceful tools� avail-able for resolving international disputes, itwould not be just to �resort to force� tosolve the Iraqi crisis.

He cited the �grave consequences� forIraq�s civilian population, the �darkprospects of tensions and conflictsbetween peoples and cultures,� and thereintroduction of war as a way to resolveinternational problems.

Although the route of U.N. weaponsinspections appeared somewhat slow, itremained an effective way to resolve thecrisis and provide the basis for a lastingpeace, he said.

Meanwhile, Catholics in the UnitedStates joined those of other faiths inmarches, speeches and other events aimedat slowing what they see as a rush to warwith Iraq by the Bush administration.

In Oregon, a new chapter of PaxChristi, an international Catholic peacemovement, was formed. In the Diocese ofSalt Lake City, Bishop George H.Niederauer called on all Catholics tomake the weekend of Feb. 15 and 16 spe-cial days of prayer for peace. In Joliet,Ill., parishioners began a sign campaignagainst a war in Iraq.

The threat of war also meant that someCatholic families were saying goodbye toloved ones deployed in the Gulf region.

Father Michael Zuffoletto, a militarychaplain stationed at Mayport NavalStation in Jacksonville, Fla., said he triesto respond to whatever concern an indi-vidual soldier may have�but therehaven�t been many concerns of con-science regarding the Iraqi situation.

�Based upon what happened withDesert Storm, people see this as a follow-up, a way to wrap up the loose ends thatshould have been taken care of then,�Father Zuffoletto said.

�The possibility of going to war is notsomething that individuals are havingproblems with,� he added. �The concernis family separation and the effects ofbeing gone so long on the family.� �

�My Christian conscience is troubledby the fact that hundreds of thousands ofIraqis will die as a result of a war. TheWorld Health Organization estimates thatthere could be 100,000 casualties andanother 400,000 affected by internal dis-placement and disease,� BishopO�Donoghue said.

At the Vatican, the pope and his aidesmet on Feb. 18 with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to discuss the Iraqicrisis. Afterward, the Vatican held outhope for �just and effective solutions�that would spare Iraqi civilians furthersuffering. It said the crisis should beresolved through the United Nations,which it described as the guarantor ofinternational law.

Annan met with the pope for abouthalf an hour and separately with CardinalSodano and Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, aretired French prelate who had justreturned from a special Vatican mission todeliver a personal papal message to IraqiPresident Saddam Hussein.

Cardinal Sodano, speaking later toreporters, said war with Iraq was notinevitable and expressed support for a res-olution adopted on Feb. 17 by theEuropean Union calling for the disarma-ment of Iraq through peaceful means.

The pope, speaking on Feb. 20 to reli-gious leaders from Indonesia, a countrywith a Muslim majority, warned that awar on Iraq could damage internationalinterreligious relations. War is not only adefeat for humanity, but a �tragedy forreligion,� he said.

Although the real risk of war looms onthe horizon, �neither the threat of war norwar itself should be allowed to alienateChristians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindusand members of other religions,� he said.

Striking a similar theme, the Vatican�stop official for interreligious dialoguewarned that military action against Iraqcould be misinterpreted as a Western waron Islam and provoke retaliation againstChristians.

�It is not a war against Islam, but Ibelieve it risks being interpreted that wayby the populations of various majorityMuslim countries, especially, but notonly, in the Middle East,� ArchbishopMichael Fitzgerald, president of thePontifical Council for InterreligiousDialogue, told Vatican Radio on Feb. 16.

John Paul II, and the day before the papalaudience he said he recognized that thetwo held different perspectives on thewar.

�I obviously know the views of thepope very well, and they are very clear.Let me just make one thing also plain. Wedo not want war. No one wants war,� hetold reporters in Rome.

�But there is a moral dimension to thisquestion, too. If we fail to disarm Saddampeacefully, then where does that leave theauthority of the United Nations? And ifwe leave Saddam in charge of Iraq, withhis weapons of mass destruction, wheredoes that leave the Iraqi people, who arethe principal victims of Saddam?� hesaid.

As Blair visited Rome, Catholic andAnglican leaders in Britain said the primeminister had not made a convincing casefor war.

In a Feb. 20 statement, CardinalCormac Murphy-O�Connor of West-minster and Anglican Archbishop RowanWilliams of Canterbury said workingthough the United Nations and U.N.weapons inspections in Iraq �could andshould render the trauma and tragedy ofwar unnecessary.�

More than 1 million anti-war protestersmarched in London on Feb. 15, a demon-stration that was backed by BishopPatrick O�Donoghue of Lancaster.

WEST WARWICK, R.I. (CNS)�Father Robert L.Marciano, pastor of SS. Rose and Clement Parish inWarwick, received an emergency message on his pager fromthe Warwick police at about 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 20.

Minutes later, the Warwick fire dispatcher called and toldthe priest, who is chaplain for the city�s police and firedepartments, that he was needed immediately at The Station,a popular West Warwick nightclub.

A raging fire had erupted at the nightclub during a rockband�s pyrotechnics display. The death toll was 97 as ofFeb. 23, and more than 160 others were injured as the crowdfrantically rushed out of the club.

As Father Marciano arrived at the scene, fire and rescuecrews were converging at the nightclub, which was totallyengulfed in flames, and patrons, including some who wereon fire, were running out the door.

�Some were burned beyond recognition, some just hadsmoke inhalation, and some had broken bones from beingcrushed� by the crowd, Father Marciano told TheProvidence Visitor, diocesan newspaper, on Feb. 21.

The priest reported to a nearby restaurant where Warwickemergency crews had set up a triage center that the chaplaindescribed as �organized chaos.�

More than 60 ambulances and countless fire trucks andpolice cars converged on the scene. A police officer com-mandeered a bus to transport less-injured victims to nearbyhospitals. At one point, Father Marciano was just 100 yardsfrom the still-raging fire and he began ministering to victimsand firefighters.

�Some of the victims were burned badly, but you didn�tknow how badly,� he said.

The morning after the fire, the priest said veteran fire-fighters told him that �nothing in their lifetime ever com-pared to this�nothing even close.�

�All of us were really overwhelmed by this,� he added.During the course of the night, the priest called a half-

dozen priests from nearby parishes to urge them to go toarea hospitals where burn victims had been taken or to a vic-tims� center established inside a hotel in neighboringWarwick. Meanwhile, he stayed on the scene, first helpingto comfort victims and their families, and later to listen anddebrief rescue personnel.

While The Station has been reduced to a pile of burntrubble, �the worst is yet to come,� the priest said, noting thatvictims still needed to be identified and loved ones wouldhave to be buried. He added that families and rescue work-ers will need long-term counseling to help them deal withthe tragedy.

�I don�t recall anything of this magnitude in our state�shistory,� said Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri at aFeb. 21 press conference. Carcieri had cut short a Floridatrip when he was notified of the devastating fire.

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in Providence received 16of the injured victims. Spokesman Otis Brown said two vic-tims were so severely burned that they were transferred toMassachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Bishop Robert E. Mulvee of Providence issued a state-ment offering prayers and condolences for the victims andtheir families, saying, �All of us in Rhode Island are stunnedand grieved by the horrific fire in West Warwick. Therewere so many lives lost, so many injured, so many livesdevastated by this tragedy.

�As we mourn the sudden and tragic deaths of the vic-tims, we ask God to comfort all those who weep at such aloss,� he said. �May the great power of God�s lovestrengthen and help to console them.�

The bishop asked that all the victims of the tragedy beremembered in the prayers of the faithful at all Masses cele-brated in the diocese during the weekend of Feb. 22-23.

Bishop Mulvee arrived at the charred nightclub onFeb. 21 and said a prayer over the remains of a body thathad just been found before going to the Warwick victims�center to offer his support to the families. He said that whilethe tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, had greater loss of life, thistragedy had a much more significant impact on him.

�Standing here, seeing the body go by me,� he said, �wasso much more difficult.�

At the victims� center, Bishop Mulvee walked among thehundreds of family members and friends of those who hadperished or were hurt or missing.

As most awaited word of the fate of their loved ones, thebishop placed an empathetic hand on some shoulders andoffered a handshake to others, still obviously in shock.

The bishop stopped often, as he walked through the largeconference room, offering words of comfort to those whohad received the worst possible news and to those whowaited to learn the fate of their loved ones still missing.

The bishop crouched down to talk to one woman whowas crying. He placed a hand on her shoulder, said a fewwords, then placed a crucifix in her hand. She clutched ittightly as he walked away, with tears in his eyes. �This is sosad,� the bishop said. �It�s tragic.�

Bishop Mulvee was accompanied by Father John J.Darcy, diocesan chancellor for canonical concerns, who alsospoke to the grieving. Calling the fire a �tragedy of unbe-lievable proportions,� Father Darcy said the clergy assem-bled at the victims� center, representing all faiths, includingfire and police chaplains, conveyed the love and support ofthe entire state. �

TERRE HAUTE�Just in time forLent, the Discalced Carmelite nuns at theMonastery of St. Joseph in Terre Hautehave created a new World Wide Web sitedevoted to helping people grow closer toGod.

Their Web site, which can be accessedat www.heartsawake.org, features prayersand spiritual reflections that invite peopleto turn to God in faith and hope amidst thechallenges of daily life.

The cloistered nuns, who wear tradi-tional habits and maintain a secluded lifeof prayer in their monastery on a hill southof Terre Haute, officially launched theirWeb site in late January.

�It�s been a three-year project and rep-resents quite a new and exciting step inour life,� said Carmelite Sister Veronicade Stockalper, the order�s self-taught web-master, who relied on prayer and morethan 20 software program textbooks tocreate the complex computer codes anddesign the beautifully illustrated Web site.

The Terre Haute nuns decided to begintheir Internet prayer ministry after talkingwith the Carmelite sisters of the Monas-tery of the Resurrection in Indianapolis,whose successful praythenews.com Website has gained national and internationalattention since its creation three yearsago.

�It was an exciting moment and a newleap into the deep for our community,�Sister Veronica said after their site went�live� on the Internet last month.

�It�s a great adventure indeed,� shesaid. �I think of these words of the HolyFather, which really were a source ofinspiration for me: �For the Church thenew world of cyberspace is a summons tothe great adventure of using its potential to

exclusively a life of prayer. We are lim-ited in our exterior apostolate, but wewill respond to prayer requests as best aswe can and offer a listening heart to peo-ple. We don�t have all the answers topeople�s problems, but we are here toreceive their needs and bring them intothe presence of the Lord, to lift theirintentions to God.�

With the Web site, Mother Anne said,�we�re trying to be true to Teresa of Avila�sspirit as contemplatives and yet build onwhat God inspired her to do within theChurch to bring Christ to others.�

Prayer makes their other ministriesfruitful, Sister Veronica said. �I think it�s afruit of the prayer that inspired me to cre-ate the Web site in this way.�

The sisters researched other CarmeliteWeb sites, she said, and received positiveresponses from the nuns before theyprayerfully decided to adopt this apostolicministry.

Indiana University photographyinstructor Paul Hightower and Holy CrossSister Alma Mary Anderson, who teachescomputer graphics at the Bloomingtoncampus, helped the sisters with picturesfor the Web site.

Future plans for the site include a Weblink called �Daily Inspiration,� created byDon Lichty of California, which can bedownloaded for inspirational quotationsand biographical information about saints.

After working hard for three years tolearn to program �the mysterious com-puter codes,� Sister Veronica said, �I willbe very excited if people visit our Website, find what we�ve put there to beinspiring or helpful, and learn more aboutCarmel.� �

�It originated totally within themonastery,� Mother Anne said of the sis-ters� newest ministry, which complementstheir prayer and printing ministries.

�I think, at this particular point in his-tory, it�s an essential medium to utilizebecause it has tremendous potential for thegood of individuals who are looking forresources for their spiritual life,� she said.�I think it�s also a wonderful opportunityto help Carmel become better known, andit provides an avenue of informing poten-tial candidates for religious life about theTerre Haute Carmel. Hopefully, it willreflect the fact that we are a communitythat is alive and vibrant.�

Acknowledging the challenges of livingin this uncertain time, Mother Anne saidthe Web site also will reach out to peoplewho are grieving the loss of loved ones orworrying about the possibility of war.

�I think people are searching for mean-ing in life,� she said. �They�re searchingfor answers to the current world situations.While diplomatic negotiations are veryimportant and significant, ultimately it isgoing to be prayer that changes people�shearts, their attitudes, their ability to for-give and be reconciled, and also their abil-ity to act according to the Gospel princi-ples of love and nonviolence.�

The Web site is a blessing, MotherAnne said, because the nuns are able toshare Carmelite spirituality with theworld, receive prayer requests and helpsupport their community through the saleof their note cards, photo cards, books andicons without compromising their clois-tered lifestyle.

�This is an overflow from our life ofprayer,� she said. �Our ministry is

proclaim the Gospel message. This chal-lenge is at the heart of what it means atthe beginning of the millennium to followthe Lord�s command to put out into thedeep.� �

Pope John Paul II�s remarks and refer-ence from Luke 5:4 to �put out into thedeep� were part of his address, �Internet:A New Forum for Proclaiming theGospel,� released in January 2002 for the36th annual World Communications Dayobservance last May.

The Web site�s home page opens withthe words, �The Carmelites of Terre Hautewelcome you with joy.�

Under a photograph of the monastery,illuminated at night, are the words, �Dayand night, on Carmel�s height, someoneprays for you.�

Icons of hearts direct �gentle readers�to access various sections on the site,including �Light for Living� pages titled�Healing,� �Comfort,� �Spirit and Joy,�and �Youthful Hearts.�

Sister Veronica said �Light for Living�topics range from inspirational features,which �speak of the marvelous ways inwhich faith can truly transform the experi-ence of living,� to a page created to helpyoung people strengthen their faith.

The site also includes pictures of thesisters, a virtual tour of the monastery andan opportunity to shop online at themonastery art shop.

�We�ve also registered the domainname as www.heartsawake.com andwww.heartsawake.net to protect the site,�Sister Veronica said. �It can be accessedwith the .org and the .com addresses.�

Other goals of the Web site are to intro-duce the Terre Haute Carmel to a wideraudience, share Carmelite spirituality andpromote vocations, said Mother AnneBrackmann, the prioress.

These prayer cards, which feature Mary and the Infant Jesus, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Thérèse of Lisieuxand other saints, were created to promote Terre Haute Carmel’s novenas. Their novena to St. Josephon March 11-19 will seek his intercession to “build peace in our hearts, in our homes and in the world.”

Carmelite Sister Veronica de Stockalper, the webmaster for the Terre Haute Carmel, spent three yearsdesigning the order’s new Web site. The sisters hope their new Internet ministry will encourage peo-ple to grow closer to God. The Discalced Carmelites founded the Monastery of St. Joseph on a hillsouth of Terre Haute in 1947.

Spiritual growth happens with God, and also with people that weinteract with in daily life.

Lent is a reminder of the impermanence of the humancondition: We are moving inexorably toward eternity.

What explains our tendency to forget the riches ofLent? What explains our tendency to stay on the surfaceof life rather than think of eternity?

Perhaps we are influenced by our hectic culture. Wehave automatic teller machines at the bank, �fast-foodrestaurants and �Headline News� on television. Theseconveniences keep us moving on the surface of every-day life.

We are much too much in a hurry to do anything sub-stantive. Spiritual growth takes time, and time is at apremium. If only there were a fast and easy way�aspiritual �drive-through� where we could pick up a littlegrace.

Perhaps we have sad memories of Lenten seasonsgone by. Winter can be a dreary and depressing time, andsomber memories of past Lents can add to the darkness.A Lenten season filled with spiritual warmth, light andgrowth could ease the memory.

I find that I can remember Lents of my long-ago boy-hood at St. Matthew Parish in Philadelphia. I can�t, how-ever, recall what I resolved to do last year for my Lentensacrifice.

The difference may be in the concreteness. When Iwas a boy, I gave up candy for Lent. That was somethingpractical. It was a sacrifice. It ended at noon on HolySaturday. At 12:01 p.m., I ate a piece of candy.

My recent resolutions have been more general andabstract. Thus they have been harder to keep.

This year, I will return to something concrete duringLent. I will fast from a particular food. I hope that everytime I encounter this particular sacrifice, I will bereminded that Lent calls me to go deeper in the spirituallife. I have to set aside more time that day to pray. I hopethat I can meet God in the small �doing without� andalso in the prayer.

I also will take some extra time to share with my spir-itual friends.

The patron of my religious community, St. Francis deSales, often discussed the spiritual life with St. Jane deChantal and the early Visitation sisters in the garden oftheir first convent in Annecy, France. They were growingspiritually together.

St. Francis de Sales� writing in his letters and in histreatise on the love of God reflects this experience. Goddraws us to the deepest levels of life and prayertogether.

I am beginning to think of this as collaborative mysti-cism. This implies that spiritual growth is not justbetween God and me, but often comes through interac-tion with others.

The experiences that others share with us give us a lotto pray over.

One friend sits quietly in prayer for 20 or 30 minutesa day, listening to God rather than speaking. I am begin-ning to do this more, although it cuts against the grain ofmy tendency to be always active. However, I know thatGod does speak in the quiet.

The example of others�often unbeknown to them�encourages us and shapes our own ways of acting.

The care a friend shows to her aging mother encour-ages me to show greater care and concern for my agingfamily members.

This year, I hope that Lent will not end, that at12:01 p.m. on Holy Saturday I will not be finished withmy Lenten observance, and that the practices of Lent willbecome habits for me.

My hope is that the habits of divine love will becomemore permanent in my daily life during Lent andthroughout the rest of the year.

Lent prepares us to recommit ourselves to life in ChristBy Sr. Genevieve Glen, O.S.B.

In the effervescence of the firstPentecost, new believers flocked into theChurch in droves. As time went by, andthe cost of Christianity rose to martyr-dom, people chose baptism more cau-tiously but with the deep commitment ofthose who know they are putting their lifeon the line.

The Church began to consider whatkind of preparation for baptism wouldstrengthen faith in the face of challenge.

This sketch does grave injustice tocomplex historical facts, but it points tothe pastoral need that gave birth to Lentas Easter became the primary time forbaptism.

In third-century Rome, baptismalpreparation lasted three years andincluded instruction in Christian belief,

introduction to Christian community,practice in Christian service to one�sneighbor and formation in Christianprayer. Intense preparations before Easterbecame what we know as Lent and culmi-nated in full sacramental initiation.

This early preparation process becamethe model for the Rite of ChristianInitiation of Adults program redevelopedafter Vatican Council II to meet the needfor grounding of adults in Gospel beliefand life prior to baptism, ensuring that newCatholics would take the baptismal com-mitment seriously and live it faithfully.

The first door into eucharistic commu-nion with Christ in the Church was bap-tism, and the second was sacramental rec-onciliation, offered to those who had seri-ously violated the community�s Gospelintegrity and needed to be restored to fulland faithful communion. A penitential

process, similar to the baptismal prepara-tion process, but harsher in its demands,reached its most intense level duringLent, culminating in formal reconciliationon Holy Thursday.

In the early Church, Christian commu-nities of faith and worship were small andcharacterized by a strong sense of mutualresponsibility. Preparations for the cele-bration and renewal of baptismal vows atEaster, both then and now, included cate-chumens preparing for baptism, penitentspreparing for reconciliation and the com-munity preparing to receive them both.

We prepare, as individuals and com-munities, to commit or recommit our-selves to life in Jesus Christ. We are all inneed of deeper conversion and reconcilia-tion. The Church�s public sinners makeall of us more and more aware of howsubtly we can excuse ourselves for our

own betrayals, small and great, of ourbaptismal commitment.

The Lenten liturgy invites us to �rendour hearts and not our garments,� stripaway rationalizations and examine howwe have drifted or chosen to depart fromour life in Christ, which is our sacramen-tal right and responsibility.

The traditional good works of Lent areprayer, which puts us into conversationwith Christ; fasting and other forms ofdispossession, which free us from theclutches of all that drags us away; andalmsgiving, which focuses our attentionon the good of others. They deliver usfrom behavior that bars the road fromdeath to life.

Eighteenth in a series

Pope Gregory the Great began his pon-tificate in 590. That�s the 18th on my list

of the 50 most impor-tant events in Catholichistory. It�s on the listbecause Gregory wasthe father of themedieval papacy.

Only two popes andfour doctors of theChurch are called �thegreat.� Popes Leo Iand Gregory I are

both. (The other two doctors are Basil andAlbert.) Gregory also has the distinctionof being one of the four Fathers of theWestern Church along with Ambrose,Augustine and Jerome.

A lot happened in the century and aquarter between the two �great� popes�and not much of it good. Barbarian tribesoverran Italy shortly after Leo the Great�sdeath and the line of Western emperorscame to an end in 476. Rome was inruins after being conquered four times in20 years. At one point, only 500 people

lived there.Gregory was a Benedictine monk�the

first monk to be elected pope. Hismonastery had formerly been his ownhome, but he turned it into a monasteryafter he inherited it when his father died.(He also turned the family estates in Sicilyinto six monasteries.)

Gregory remained a simple monk forseveral years before Pope Pelagius II senthim to Constantinople as a papal ambas-sador. He remained there for about sixyears, becoming an expert on the EasternChurch, which was to serve him well inlater years. After Pope Pelagius died,Gregory was consecrated pope.

He was a strong administrator. He con-ducted a reform of the clergy, enforcingcelibacy and removing unworthy priestsfrom office. He launched a series of chari-table programs to feed the poor through-out Italy.

Early in his pontificate, Gregory wroteone of his most important works�thePastoral Guide, on the responsibilities ofa bishop. He also wrote Dialogues, anaccount of the lives and miracles ofsaints, including a life of St. Benedict.

It�s not nice to fool with MotherNature, or with Miss Manners either. So,

it is with deep regretand ladylike restraintthat I wish to take totask the latter eminentarbiter of etiquette.

In a recent newspa-per column, MissManners discussed thedating customs of50 years back. She saidthat modern young

people long for those days, when they thinkthe sexes (and, as she points out, �therewere officially only two�) showed morerespect for each other than they do today.

These people believe that young mencourted young ladies without impureexpectations of bodily expressions of grat-itude in return. Young ladies responded tomale courting coyly and, although it isunspoken by Miss Manners, teasingly.And thus was romance created.

Things went in an orderly progression,according to this opinion, from mild flirt-ing to dating to going steady or frater-nity/sorority �pinning,� engagement andmarriage. Aside from religious pre-nuptialinstruction or obligatory parental �talks,�

there was no mention of sexual conduct.Such things were not supposed to occur

until marriage, even among those whowere not obligated to chastity by religiousbeliefs. And if such a thing occurred, theresult was a shotgun marriage �fromwhich there was no escape, ever.�

Despite the bleakness of MissManner�s assessment of ancient courtshippractice, she found the �orderliness� of itworthy. And that�s about all. She claimedpeople say they dumped this kind of dat-ing because they hated it, especially the�sexual repression� they felt. But, shebelieves the chief reasons for the �sexualrevolution� in dating lay elsewhere.

According to Miss Manners, the olddating system fostered loneliness in thosewithout dates, and nasty competitionbetween the �haves� and �have-nots�among daters. She said it did not allownon-romantic relationships between thesexes, and suppressed friendships notgeared toward courtship and marriage.

�The progression from courtship tomarriage lacked a stage for the develop-ment of friendship,� Miss Manners wrote.Still, in comparing then to now, she alsocomplained of �� the chaotic situationtoday, where intimacy is tied to no stage

It’s not good manners to r evise history

I am experiencing a new change in mylife. My son, Michael, has begun to crawl.

But even for a periodbefore that, he was cer-tainly mobile. A fewweeks ago, I took himto my office and sathim on the floor infront of my large deskwith some of the toysthat he usually prefers.

But within a fewminutes, I heard the

sound of CD cases falling off some shelvesthat were about five feet from where I hadput him. Michael had scooted himselfacross the floor, and was pulling dozens ofCDs off of my shelves and chewing on thecases.

I just had to smile. I wasn�t mad. When Isaw that he had moved across the floor likethat, I knew that he had entered the phaseof exploration. He wanted to reach out fur-ther and further beyond himself. When hehad been born only a handful of monthsearlier, something like this could never havehappened.

And so the growth that I had witnessedin him gave me a physical confirmation ofwhat it means for human beings to be cre-ated in the image and likeness of God. Still,with every tumble he takes, with everystruggle he makes, I also see the reflectionof how all human beings strain against theeffects of original sin.

Throughout history, humans have strivedfor that transcendence which is of God.Men and women have sailed the seas,climbed mountains, and gone to the top andbottom of the world. They have thrustthemselves past the bonds of Earth andreached into the stars. Others have exploredthe depths of wisdom and knowledge.Mystical souls have, by the grace of God,soared to the heights of the Spirit.

And yet, we are still just creatures madein the image and likeness of the Creator.We are not the Creator himself. In all of ourattempts for transcendence, there havealways been and will be failures. And as webegin the observance of Lent in about a

week, we will be given the opportunity toface this stark reality�our constant experi-ence of failure and sin in the midst of ourstriving for transcendence.

But the constant threat of doom and ourstruggles with the effects of original sinneed not fill us with despair. For althoughour first parents, Adam and Eve, fell fromthat pristine image of God in which theywere created, God has redeemed us throughhis Son.

Through Christ�s death and resurrec-tion�the culmination of the season ofLent�each one of us who believe and arebaptized are born anew, born as the adoptedsons and daughters of his, and now our,heavenly Father.

Surely our Father looks upon us in ourstriving for transcendence, just as I lookupon Michael as he struggles to moveacross a room. Just as I take love-filledwonder in his every movement and lift himup when he tumbles down, our heavenlyFather marvels in his own redeemed imageshining forth in us in all of our exploration.

Yet, when we fall because of our ownbrokenness, God is always there to lift usup with his grace. My son, Michael, hasindeed entered the phase of exploration.May it be a stage that he, and indeed all ofus, never leave behind.

My husband and I were among thethousands of people stranded in blizzards

in many states lastmonth. We�re amongthe lucky ones, find-ing safety with othertravelers jammed intothe first officialTennessee rest stopheading south toNashville.

Shortly after escap-ing the standstill traf-

fic, a Cincinnati couple arrived with nineof their children, who quickly settled intoone corner. They quietly entertained them-selves, supervised by the parents and threeof their biological children. (Eldest daugh-ter, Kristen, is at college, hoping to be amissionary.)

Soon interacting myself, I learned theyoungest children were special-needs chil-dren adopted from other countries.

Early into our six hours there, I sawGod�s grace in action�people helpingpeople. Two other women and I, con-cerned about lack of food for the children,retrieved from cars a half loaf of bread,

cheese and apples. Hours later, a trucker,also worried about the youngsters, phonedfor four pizzas from a nearby town.Delivery wasn�t possible, so one of thetwo exhausted rest stop attendantsarranged for a friend to bring the pizzaswhen he rescued her via a little-knownback access road. After the children ate,there was enough left for many adults tosavor slices, too.

I felt privileged helping the charmingchildren, and I admire their parents, Scottand Kathy Rosenow. Their second oldestdaughter was born with learning disabili-ties and kidney disease. Doctors weren�tencouraging about her future. Yet therewas Erin, 19, with her two capableyounger brothers, Allan, 17, and Ryan, 12,expertly shepherding the younger siblings.(Ryan was born without a hand.)

Because of their experience with med-ical challenges, the Rosenows decided tohelp other children needing special careand adopted Meghan, 6, Robyn, 4, andStephen, 2, from China. They also adoptedNathan, 5, and Colin, 4, from Bolivia andCarlin, 2, from Romania. They are waitingto finalize the adoption of two other

Important events: Gregory the Great electedOf his other writings, 40 short homi-

He was particularly interested in theliturgy. About 80 prayers in what laterwas called the Gregorian Sacramentaryare attributed to him. Gregorian Chant isalso named after him although Gregory�srole in its development is questioned.

Gregory was also responsible for theconversion of England. He sent 40 monksfrom his own monastery to England,under the leadership of the man who hasgone down in history as St. Augustine ofCanterbury. He instructed the monks topurify rather than destroy pagan templesand customs, and to take over pagan ritesand festivals and turn them into Christianfeasts.

Gregory was pope for 13 years. Healso had to fill the vacuum that existed inthe civil government of Rome. As Leonegotiated with Attila the Hun, so didGregory with Agilulph the Lombard.After nine years, he negotiated a truce. �

hand dating experience of the ancientvariety, I must now beg to differ withMiss Manners. Friendship between thesexes was not only alive and well, butwas, in fact, another name for courtship!Physical attraction was not the only mag-net attracting girls and boys to each other.

Furthermore, dating without the pres-sure of sexual relations permitted a coupleto examine their attitudes and values withmore clarity. Their vision of each otherwas not clouded by the kinds of pleasuremeant for the growth of two people�s loveinto a happy and stable family.

The two lovers could consider morecarefully what a lifetime with the othermight actually entail. If they were lonely,repressed or competitive, the problem wastheirs alone and not the system�s.

This assurance comes from two of uswho, without benefit of a shotgun,emerged from those dark ages of datinginto a marriage from which there will beno escape, ever. Thank the Lord!

The Book of Hosea is the source of thefirst reading this weekend.

Hosea was aprophet in ancientIsrael. He is designateda Minor Prophet. Thisdesignation does notdemean his contribu-tion to the humanunderstanding of God,but it means that hiswritings are not aslong as those of the so-

called Major Prophets.Little is known about this prophet.

There is no evidence of his birthplace ormany details of his life. It is known, fromhis writings, that he was the son of Beeri.His wife was unfaithful to him. He hadtwo sons and a daughter.

Some scholars think that he was a priestor of the priestly caste. He lived in thenorthern kingdom, which is more com-monly known today as the central part ofthe West Bank, or Samaria.

In this reading, God speaks in the firstperson, but through Hosea. God speaks ofthe entire people, in a personalized way.God speaks of rescuing the people fromEgyptian slavery.

The bond linking God with the peopleis so strong that it is akin to the vowsbetween spouses. Indeed, God states aunion with the people, as husband andwife, confirmed in love and in mercy.

Always, God pledges faithfulness tothis relationship.

This prophecy was written in circum-stances similar to those surrounding theother prophets. Fidelity to God was reluc-tant and tepid in all too many cases. Timeswere bad. The prophets saw the reason forthe people�s misfortune in their less thanfervent religious practice and faith.

However, regardless of their religiosity,or lack of it, God would be faithful.

St. Paul�s First Epistle to theCorinthians supplies this weekend�sLiturgy of the Word with its second read-ing.

In this reading, the Apostle expresseshis great care for the Corinthian Christians.He has no cause to produce credentials.Jesus called him. Paul needs to prove him-self to no one.

Called by Jesus to be an Apostle, anduncompromisingly dedicated to the Lord,

the Apostle has the persons of theChristian community of Corinth deeplyengraved upon his heart. He lives to bringthem the Gospel. He is the channel bywhich they encounter Jesus, and by whichthey learn from Jesus the true path to sal-vation.

The last reading is from St. Mark�sGospel.

This story reports another occasionwhen Jesus had to debate with thePharisees.

The Pharisees were quite taken with astrict observance of the Law of Moses.Any deviation from, or variation of, thislaw upset them. They accused the Lord�sdisciples of not fasting when the lawrequired them to do so.

Jesus replied by saying that for the dis-ciples everything was secondary to the factthat the Lord was with them.

Through Jesus, God offers salvation.However, it is not imposed. People mustprepare themselves to receive it. Thosewho truly wish to live the life of gracemust make of themselves new wineskins.

ReflectionOver the centuries, few groups of peo-

ple have attained such universal rejectionas have the Pharisees who were alive atthe time of Jesus. Indeed, the very namehas gone into the English language, �phari-saical,� as a synonym for deceit andmaneuvering.

Actually, all human beings are apt to bePharisees, in the worst sense of the term.First, all humans are limited in theirknowledge. No one knows everything, andeven collective human knowledge is opento unhappy surprises.

Great disasters, such as the 1912 loss ofthe Titanic or the recent loss of the spaceshuttle Columbia, remind us that therealways are questions that we have not fullyanswered.

We cannot provide for everything, butwe�as they were in the first centuryA.D.�are quite content. We assume thatwe do know everything. We all easily con-nect outward observances with propriety.

In this Gospel reading, Jesus calls us totrue discipleship. Nothing can standbetween the Lord and us. He is everything.He is life. Most of all, we cannot permitourselves individually to stand betweenGod and us.

He also offers the key to life. The firstreading, from Hosea, reminds us that Godhas been offering us life for a very longtime. It is up to us to respond�to becomenew wineskins. �

QThe book of Genesis, Chapter 17,seems to say that the Jews have a God-

given right to the terri-tories in disputebetween the Pales-tinians and Israelis. Isthis indeed the fact?

It is my understand-ing that the Pales-tinians settled andlived in these lands forhundreds of years, andthe Israelis want to

take the land for their own homes. If theScriptures are to be taken literally, shouldthe Palestinian Arabs simply yield to theJewish settlers and give up their homes?(Illinois)

AWhat you say about Genesis is true.As God formed Abraham and his

descendants into his �chosen people,� heis believed to have destined them for theterritory comprising and surrounding thepresent state of Israel.

The cohesiveness they developed, underthe covenants between God and the peo-ple, would be one way that God preparedthe theological and social conditions forthe saving message and work of Jesus.

Some Jewish people feel this divineplan still validates their claim to the land.My conviction, and the position of offi-cial statements by the Catholic Church, isthat the Old Testament theological claimhas little or no direct relevance to the pre-sent situation.

Settlement of the conflicts in that partof the world must be reached on the samebasis of political, economic and socialjustice as might lead to the resolution ofany other such dispute.

Clearly, that would require considera-tion of what has happened during the past2,000 years at least as much as whatoccurred in the time before Christ.

QI would like information about inter-faith marriages. I am the product of

such a marriage.My Catholic grandfather never spoke

to my mother after her marriage in 1936.When her children were born, he claimedwe were bastards and of no concern tohim. I knew him by sight since I resem-bled him, but when I rode on a bus withhim he never spoke. How does thisextend God�s love to everyone, all of usmade in his image?

Only the Catholic Church hinders usfrom being a family. When will I nolonger be a bastard in the eyes of theChurch? Sometime in the 21st century?(Massachusetts)

AYou have never been illegitimate inthe eyes of the Church, back when

you were born or now. If it�s any consola-tion, you are not the only one whothought so back in those days.

Before going further, we must admitthat the Catholic Church�s attitudes andpolicies concerning �mixed marriages�were much more restrictive and severewhen your parents were married than theyare now. For a long time, the marriage ofa Catholic and non-Catholic could not becelebrated in the church building. Most ofthese weddings took place privately andinformally in the parish rectory.

Later, these marriages were permittedin church, but could be only at a side altarand, of course, no Mass was allowedunder any circumstances.

For reasons too lengthy to discussagain here, that policy changed drasticallyover the years, as everyone knows.

Even under the narrowest regulationsof the past, however, there was no ques-tion, as far as the Catholic Church wasconcerned, that couples properly enteringa Catholic marriage enjoyed a valid mar-riage union, even if one partner was notCatholic. Their union was even, as now,considered a sacramental marriage if bothspouses were baptized.

I�m sorry for the distorted understand-ing of his faith that led your grandfatherto emotionally abuse his grandchildrenover the years. That kind of mistreatmentand insult to his family can be as seriousand as scarring as physical abuse, as I�msure you have discovered.

Whatever imperfections the CatholicChurch may have suffered in this matter,I hope you can get past blaming theChurch for what your grandfather did toyour family.

Church offers ministries for post-abortion healingBy Mary Ann WyandFirst of three parts

Abortion is a decision that a woman must live with forthe rest of her life.

The painful knowledge that she has chosen to kill herunborn child causes post-abortion stress, which includesfeelings of loss, guilt, shame, anxiety, depression, loneli-ness, alienation from self or others, and fear of being sepa-rated from God. Denial, sleep disturbances, addictivebehaviors and low self-esteem are other symptoms.

Servants of the Gospel of Life Sister Diane Carollo,director of the archdiocesan Office of Pro-Life Activities inIndianapolis, ministers to women who are suffering fromthe aftermath of abortion.

Sister Diane said the Catholic Church�s confidentialProject Rachel and Rachel�s Companions ministries, whichencourage women to turn to God for healing, have helpedmany women recover mentally, emotionally and spirituallyafter experiencing abortion.

�The wounds of abortion go very deep, to the verydepths of the soul, and only Christ can heal thesewomen,� Sister Diane said. �It�s Christ�s healing gracethat brings a woman beyond the tragedy of abortion. I�mtotally convinced that Catholic women cannot find truehealing without the sacraments and without deepeningtheir faith.�

The next Rachel�s Companions support group will beginmeeting weekly on March 1 for three months at an undis-closed location in central Indiana, she said, and women areinvited to call her for more information about this post-abortion ministry.

�When a woman calls, I tell her that God does not wanther to be trapped in discouragement, misery or self-

deprecation,� Sister Diane said. �He doesn�t want her todespise herself because of what she did, even though it iswrong. He loves her unconditionally despite what she did,and he is moving her to a new point in her life and in herrelationship with him.�

Sister Diane said she encourages women to seek recon-ciliation with God through the sacrament of penance, andshe refers them to one of a number of priests in the archdio-cese with Project Rachel training.

�If she needs therapeutic intervention, I refer her to spe-cific counselors in the archdiocese that are sensitive to abor-tion-related problems,� Sister Diane said. �If she is aCatholic woman who is struggling with the aftermath ofabortion, I suggest that she join Rachel�s Companions, aconfidential spiritual support group, for three months. Thewomen who are facilitators of the group lead them in dia-logue and prayer to help them discover healing, peace andreconciliation in and through Christ and the Church.�

Many women who had an abortion years ago still arehaunted by the experience, she said. �The experience ofabortion influences them in the present in negative ways.They�re looking for peace and forgiveness, and have a hardtime forgiving themselves.�

Often, Sister Diane said, a woman will tell her, �I had anabortion several years ago and I think I�m pretty muchhealed.� Then, as we continue the conversation, she willbreak down and cry as she becomes overwhelmed by thepainful memories and discovers that there are still issuessurrounding the abortion that need to be dealt with.�

An abortion claims at least two victims�the child whois killed and the mother who is scarred by the experience�as well as family members, Sister Diane said. �Rachel�sCompanions recognizes that the woman is a victim as well,and helps bring her beyond being a victim to being some-one who is redeemed and loved and treasured by God. Itcan be a turning point in a woman�s life as she is sur-rounded by other women who are journeying with her afterexperiencing abortion.�

Sister Diane said the archdiocesan Office of Pro-LifeActivities also is planning confidential healing Masses thisspring and summer for women who have had abortions andfor family members who also are experiencing the after-math of abortion.

These abortion reconciliation ministries sponsored by theChurch extend the healing power of the sacraments to hurt-ing women and families, she said, and encourage them toturn away from despair and place their hope in God.

In his encyclical, �The Gospel of Life,� Pope John Paul IIencourages women suffering from the pain of abortion toseek help and healing.

�Certainly what happened was and remains terriblywrong,� the pope wrote, �but do not get into discourage-ment and do not lose hope. Try, rather, to understand whathappened and face it honestly. � Give yourselves over withhumility and trust to repentance. The Father of mercies isready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the sacra-ment of reconciliation. You will come to understand thatnothing is definitively lost, and you will also be able to askforgiveness from your child, who is now living in theLord.�

Franciscan lectureseries will examinewomen in Scripture

A lecture series about �Women in the Scriptures� willbe presented in March in Oldenburg.

Each presentation will be offered twice, from 2 p.m. to3 p.m. at the convent of the Congregation of the Sisters ofthe Third Order of St. Francis and from 7 p.m. to 8:30p.m. at Olivia Hall.

The first lecture is March 6 and will explore �Anna,�who is mentioned in the Gospel of Luke. Called aprophetess in the Gospel, Anna was awaiting the comingof the Messiah and was blessed to see him during his pre-sentation at the Temple. Franciscan Sister BarbaraLeonhard will talk about the significance of Anna.

On March 13, Franciscan Sister Ann Vonder Meulenwill speak about �Esther� and how her story is a modelfor peace and reconciliation. Esther, considered a heroine,became the wife of King Ahasuerus and helped stop amassacre of her people.

On March 20, a program about �Unnamed Women ofthe Scriptures� will be presented by Franciscan SisterSarah Page. She will talk about women who were identi-fied as �the wife of or a woman,� but given no name asother women were in the Bible.

On March 27, Franciscan Sister Francesca Thompsonwill dramatize �Hagar,� who was the maid of Abraham�swife, Sarah, who told Abraham to take her as a mistressto bear a son because Sarah had no children. Hagar boreIshmael, but was later driven away by Sarah. SisterFrancesca will speak about Hagar�s place in the Bible andreflect on the relationship between master and servant.

Being chosen for the cast meant thatstudents had to agree to participate in theservice activity with Providence House.About 100 students, from cast membersto technical positions, will participate.

Senior Jonathan Ernstberger said helikes the idea because that�s what Catholicschools are about.

�As a Catholic school, we are chal-lenged to do more than if we were goingto a public school,� said Jonathan, amember of Holy Family Parish in NewAlbany. �We only have three moremonths of school left, and this is some-thing positive we can do that lends toaction and it�s a great thing.�

Leslie Mills, service-learning coordina-tor for the school, said the experience willcount as service hour credit toward gradu-ation. Providence requires students to per-form a certain number of service hours tograduate.

Students have already collected toi-letry items for the home and there ourfuture plans to help furnish the home�slaundry room, and decorate and furnish

a recreation and therapy room there forthe residents.

Combining theater requirements withservice helps students have a well-rounded education.

�An appreciation of theater comes ifthey see how it reflects our human condi-tion,� Durham said. �They can experiencein some ways what the players [in LesMiserables] are experiencing in their painand in being disadvantaged.

�This play takes place in Paris at atime when people are starving and strug-gling to live day to day, he said. �Thereare people in our society suffering likethat.�

Senior Brian Kerr said he hopes totake this experience with him into col-lege.

�I think this will help us realize whatwe have,� said Brian, who attends HolyFamily Parish in New Albany. �I�ll take itwith me and never take for granted thethings God has given me.�

Ryan Wells, another senior, said heappreciates service activities.

�A service activity is always benefi-cial,� said Ryan, who attends St. MichaelParish in Charlestown. �I love to helppeople. It�s a great feeling. Once Julio Nasis, a parishioner atLittle Flower Parish in Indianapolis, heardabout Mother Ignacia, a nun who foundeda religious order in the Philippines, hecouldn�t forget her.

Or what her order was doing in hisnative land.

Nasis promised the Sisters of theReligious of the Virgin Mary that hewould spread news about their healingministry and their founder, MotherIgnacia del Espiritu Santo, whose causehas been introduced for beatification atthe Vatican.

Returning to the Philippines to visit hiscousin who was very ill and had a possi-ble tumor, Nasis first heard of the sistersand the Mother Ignacia Healing Center inCaloocon, northwest of Manila.

�At first, I was hesitant to go, thinking,�What would I do there?� said Nasis.

However, he soon found that he had amission to tell others about the shrine.

Nasis said his cousin was healed afterreceiving a �healing bath� in which a sis-ter washed him with holy water. Thewater reportedly comes from a miraculousspring.

Nasis� cousin, Eliseo �Benny�Villamor�s skin had been turning yellowand tests showed that there was a block-age in his body that doctors feared was amalignant tumor.

Villamor went to the shrine, where hebecame very ill before his healing bath.Afterward, he still expected to have anoperation, but when he visited his doctorsall his tests came out normal.

Nasis said that he has some holy waterfrom the shrine and said that pictures of aperson can be taken to the shrine forprayers if they cannot attend.

He also encouraged people to say spe-cial healing prayers to Mother Ignaciaduring their rosary.

�After each decade, mention. MotherIgnacia intercede for us and say the nameof Jesus 10 times,� he said. �It�s veryeffective for healing.�

The main healing session at the shrineis on Saturday, but there are also healingdays on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The sick that cannot come are asked tomake a novena to Mother Ignacia. Theshrine�s address is 857 Bagumbong Road,Novaliches, Caloocan City.

Inquirer reported.One has to pass a network of dirt road-

ways with many chuckholes to arrive atthe shrine�a former farm that has beenrenovated into a retreat center with tents,statues of the Blessed Mother, Christ anda bamboo cross.

Nasis, who taught at St. Simon Schoolin Indianapolis from 1966-1979, hasmade the trip many times and said he haswitnessed many healings�from a childwho was able to walk again to a doctorwhose hand was crushed and suddenly hecould move it.

�This has very much helped me in myCatholic faith,� Nasis said. �I think MotherIgnacia has helped me spiritually.�

And physically. Nasis said he receiveda healing bath in hopes of curing emphy-sema, and upon returning to his doctor, hewas not wheezing anymore.

Mother Ignacia, a Filipino-Chinesefounded her order in 1684. The Religiousof the Virgin Mary has the country�slargest community of Filipino nuns.Mother Ignacia�s parents wanted her tomarry, but marriage held no attraction forher. Making a retreat of the spiritual exer-cises of St. Ignatius, who founded theJesuit order, she felt the inspiration tobegin her own order.

The Jesuits helped direct the group,and a set of rules according to Ignatianspirituality formed the sister�s charism.

Hundreds of people journey to hershrine to have the sisters pray over them.They state that everything comes throughChrist. The most famous visitor to theshrine was former Philippine presidentJoseph Estrada, who went for healingwith 1,000 police officers escorting himlast year, Catholic News Service reported.

Holy water from the miraculous springwas poured over him and prayers weresaid.

Estrada was reportedly healed of kneeproblems. Since Estrada�s reported heal-ing, the shrine, which has been operatingfor about six years, has been growing inpopularity.

Franciscan Father EdmundMoore, who was the foundingprincipal of Bishop Luers HighSchool in Fort Wayne, died onFeb. 16 of congestive heartfailure. He was 84.

A Mass of Christian Burialwas held on Feb. 19 at hishome parish, St. Mary Churchin New Albany. Burial fol-lowed at St. Michael Cemeteryin Louisville.

A native of New Albany,Father Edmund spent 37 of his58 years as a priest working ineducation ministry. His lastassignment was at St. BonifaceParish in Louisville, Ky.,where he resided until heretired in 1998 to live at theBishop David Apartments, alsoin Louisville.

Born Raymond Moore, hewas the son of Clarence andBertha (Knable) Moore. Heattended St. Francis Seminaryin Cincinnati, Ohio, for hishigh school education, and wasinvested as a friar atSt. Anthony Shrine/Novitiate,also in Cincinnati, in 1937.

He made his solemn profes-sion in 1940 during his years atDuns Scotus College inSouthfield, Mich., and was

ordained a priest in 1945 atHoly Family Theologate inOldenburg.

After two years in parochialministry at Our Lady ofSorrows Parish in Kansas Cityand St. George Parish inCincinnati, he was assigned toRoger Bacon High School inCincinnati.

After one year there, hebecame the first principal ofBishop Luers High School inFort Wayne and was instru-mental in the construction ofthe school and the friars� resi-dence.

After six years there, hemoved to St. Francis College inFort Wayne and ministered as achaplain and teacher until1970, when he returned toRoger Bacon for 14 years.

During most of that time,Father Edmund served asprovincial coordinator of stud-ies and chair of the educationadvisory board.

He then moved to DunsScotus Friary in Southfield toassist with the chapel min-istry.

He is survived by a brother,Marc Moore of Evansville, andseveral nieces and nephews. �

NEW YORK (CNS)�The Church�s role at theUnited Nations is not to offer �technical solutions orremedies� to world problems but to show the interna-tional community how God lifts up the whole world,according to the Vatican�s new U.N. nuncio. Arch-bishop Celestino Migliore was celebrant and homilistfor a Mass on Feb. 23 at Holy Family Church, whoseparish bounds include the U.N. headquarters and manyof the national U.N. missions. To illustrate the Church�smission, he recalled Archimedes, a Greek of the thirdcentury B.C. who was said to have stated that by theprinciples of physics he theoretically could deviselevers capable of moving any amount of weight. �Giveme a place to stand and I will move the world,� hereportedly said. The nuncio said that God is the onewho �can lift up the entire world. By her presenceamong the nations, the Church wants to share with thepeoples of the world this treasure, this lever outside theworld which enables her to lift it up,� he said.

U.S. Chaldean Catholics sharefears of their relatives in Iraq

SAN DIEGO (CNS)�U.S. Chaldean Catholics fromIraq say they share the fears of relatives in their home-land that a military attack there could cause casualtiesexceeding those of the 1991 Gulf War. U.S. data showthat during the Gulf War an estimated 100,000 Iraqi sol-diers were killed, 300,000 were wounded, and 150,000deserted and were taken prisoners. Human rights groupsclaimed higher numbers of Iraqi deaths. As for U.S.losses in the conflict, U.S. Department of VeteransAffairs sources reported that 148 American troops werekilled in battle, 145 were killed in accidents and 467were wounded in action. U.S. Chaldean Catholics saytheir relatives in Iraq still relive the Gulf War�s �psy-chological nightmare,� according to Saad Marouf, chairof the Michigan-based Chaldean Federation of America.Iraqis were packed like sardines in Baghdad�s under-ground shelters, where they listened to explodingbombs and worried if their homes had been destroyed. �
