The 10-day Indianapolis Home Show is the nation’s oldest and the Midwest’s largest home-focused extravaganza, offering the best in home products as well as decorating, construction and remodeling ideas. The show is the largest consumer home event in Indiana. Now in its 94th year, the Indianapolis Home Show has more than 900 exhibit spaces!

Fischer Homes is ready to excite and intrigue visitors to the Indianapolis Home Show as the designer and builder of the Centerpiece Home — a fully-constructed, decorated and landscaped home built entirely inside Exposition Hall. Always a popular attraction at the show, the Centerpiece Home is a look at the hottest new lifestyle and home building trends.

This year, Fischer Homes debuts the Allerton home design for Home Show visitors. A European Romantic elevation with soaring rooflines and a painted brick exterior, the Allerton boasts four bedrooms and 3½ baths spread across a majestic 4,010 square feet.

“This layout really emphasizes the connection between spaces used on an everyday basis. It was designed for the modern on-the-go family, that still needs down time and togetherness,” said Stephen Whaley, corporate marketing manager for Fischer Homes. “The Allerton is part of our Grand Estates Custom collection, and we are so pleased to be able to present it to the public as this year’s Indianapolis Home Show Centerpiece Home.”

The Allerton features an expansive great room and adjoining kitchen, ground floor study, formal dining room and family gathering room. The second floor master suite, including spa-like bathroom and large walk-in closet with adjoining laundry, is accompanied by two child bedrooms, boy and girl, and a guest room.

Touch of Class interior designer Joy Perkins worked with the Fischer Homes team in decorating the Centerpiece Home to showcase options for customizing the home interior. Landscaping comes courtesy of Calvin Landscape in Indianapolis.

Veteran designer Perkins took her cue from the all new Allerton model’s livable layout that flows easily from space to space.

“Everything about the inside says ‘home.’ The design tells the story of the modern family,” Perkins said. “This year’s Centerpiece Home is imbued with a relaxed organic feel throughout. It has a restrained elegance that’s highly functional and not struggling to impress.”

Soothing colors and tactile materials are offset with bold splashes of lighting and dramatic furniture centerpieces that float within open spaces rather than being pushed against a wall.

For the third year in a row, Calvin Landscape has been tapped to create the custom landscape design for the Centerpiece Home at the Indianapolis Home Show. The Indianapolis-based company has concentrated on designing open spaces that are useable for the modern family, as well as pleasing to the eye.

“This year’s Centerpiece Home is really about a clean modern look that’s livable, and the outdoor design was created to sync with that theme,” said owner Jim Calvin. “We wanted to keep it uncluttered and functional. There are more outdoor ‘venues’ for 2016 -- pockets of areas where families can gather together or find a little peaceful alone time, as their mood fits.”

A paving stone pathway will link the different features, starting with an amazing outdoor kitchen and eating nook, with a covered metal roof, slab stone tabletop, bar and bench top. Nearby is the reflecting pool featuring a dark bottom and a pair of sheer iridescent waterfalls cascading into the pool. Copper urns with 360-degree cascading water and a fire accent are sure to grab attendees’ eyes. On the far side is a pergola structure with a day bed, a wood fire pit and television.

Sprinkled throughout the entire Home Show are 25,000 square feet devoted to landscaping and gardening, with lavish feature gardens! The gardens are produced by: Wm. H. For the 2016 Indianapolis Home Show, Fischer Homes is again debuting an all-new home design for this year’s Centerpiece Home: the Allerton. It will be built entirely inside Exposition Hall at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Fischer Homes has been building homes for 35 years, mostly in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Six years ago they entered the Indianapolis market and

have made a big splash with their creative designs, streetscapes and exteriors. They are now building in 37 locations in Carmel, Geist, Fishers, McCordsville, Zionsville, Westfield, Noblesville, Brownsburg, Avon, Center Grove and Greenwood.

“Every year Fischer Homes impresses with the way they take the Centerpiece Home to another level,”

Imagine the rusty toolshed in your backyard turning into a cool, cozy cocktail bar.

This year, William H. Brown Landscape Inc. is turning that fantasy into a reality with the Backyard Pub-Shed.

“Basically, this is no more than your typical outdoor shed turned into a bar-like setting, replicating the likes of the owner and their style. This might reflect decorations, light-ing, seating, games, etc.” said Bill Brown of William H. Brown Landscape Inc. in Zionsville.

Brown is excited about the infectious DIY spirit that this project inspires.

“This should prove to be a very colorful and enlightening feature for the show as well as an item that will give the showgoers a great idea of how to do it themselves in their own backyard setting.”

Brown added that this type of shed can serve as more than a mere bar. It’s a blank canvas for people to project their personalities onto and show off all kinds of construction skills.

“Within the pub-shed, we seem to be able to let the home-owner show off their personal attributes and abilities in that area,” Brown said. “As for myself, I enjoy rustic metal, wood-working and stained glass items, so I bring these to the shed to show off my interests and to give the showgoers an idea of how to show off what they like to do as well.”

The backyard pub-shed will be located in the middle of the West Pavilion.

In approaching the interior design of this year’s Indianapolis Home Show Centerpiece Home, Joy Perkins of Touch of Class took a different tact from previous shows. The Allerton is an all-new model from Fischer Homes, and veteran designer Perkins took her cue from the livable layout that flows easily from space to space.

Her amazing interior design is eye-pleasing and utilitarian, easily adapting to genial entertaining or relaxing downtime. The look is “full of character and comfort.”

Centerpiece Home visitors will first be greeted by the ground floor study, which has a dual function with a mirrored bar and backsplash. The kitchen includes a trendy cabinet concept, with the top in quartz, the lower portion in willow and see-through glass in the middle. The large island has a large chandelier overhead and hide hair barstools.

The large gathering room adjacent is spotlighted by a large square table with a cocktail-height glass top with an array of driftwood underneath. It’s a place to have a snack and a conversation, help children with their homework, watch television or just take in the huge fireplace. The nearby dining

room features its own fireplace and a long dark wood table, black velvet side chairs with off-white counterparts for the captains’ places.

In the great room, peanut is the featured color with beguiling leather sofas. A large cocktail table, 80 inches long, has a stone top with metal supports. The fireplace has a granite hearth, and the stools in front of it are actual slabs of solid onyx.

Upstairs the master bedroom features a light-colored ledge stone wall with a charcoal tufted bed against it, with accompanying furniture in a dark finish. Puck lighting will wash the wall in light, and two very wide Mongolian fur chairs dominate the sitting area. The master bath has an under mount drop-in tub and dark cabinets. A loft is notable for an entire framed wall of family pictures.

The boy’s bedroom is dressed in a football theme including a massive bed wall mural. The girl’s room has a Hollywood theme, with star-shaped lights and a golden window treatment. The guest bedroom is outfitted in a graphite color, a unique trim design on the bed wall and a comfy black velvet club chair.

“These upstairs rooms include lots of memory points. They’re comfy, relaxing spaces where family members can express their individuality and find a personal retreat,” Perkins said.

“Everything about Joy’s interior design says ‘Feels like home,’” said Indianapolis Home Show Manager Laura Groninger. “Visitors at this year’s Home Show are in for a special treat when they walk inside the Centerpiece Home. The Allerton is sure to be one of our most memorable homes ever.”

The 2016 Centerpiece Home is a new concept from Fischer Homes: the Aller-ton. It’s a European Romantic elevation with soaring rooflines. The four bedrooms, 3½ baths and other rooms are spread out across 4,010 square feet, and focus on connecting the spaces people use daily.

Home Show visitors will be greeted by a simple walkway entrance with a smaller elevation than last year’s Centerpiece Home, with plenty of colorful foliage to complement the painted brick exterior, along with a pair of big evergreen trees. Gas lamps will provide a timeless, elegant touch to the outside of the house.

Out back, look for the landscaping to be laid out in a linear fashion, rather than groupings of plants. A paving stone path-way will link the different features, starting with an amazing outdoor kitchen and eating nook, with a covered metal roof, slab stone tabletop, bar and bench top.

Well screened with trees and bushes, the back-yard is all about providing comfort and privacy for the owners. It is an extension of the interior design motif, which is providing spaces that are function-

al as well as aesthetically pleasing.

“We’ve been very impressed with the designs Calvin Land-scape has created for the Centerpiece Home the past couple of years, so it was an easy to choice to bring them back,” said Indianapolis Home Show Manager Laura Groninger. “Jim and his team have this amazing ability to study the building features and interior design and come up with an outdoor look that perfectly complements the theme we’re going for.

“We’re confident visitors to the Home Show will be wowed by the Centerpiece Home, top to bottom, inside and out.”

Bill Brown never knows what to expect from the Indianapolis Home Show’s feature gardens…and therein lies the thrill.

“We never know what we are going to see until it appears. But it’s always a different look — and typically a better look from year to year,” said Brown of William H. Brown Landscape Inc. in Zionsville — the landscape coordinator of the Indianapolis Home Show.

The feature gardens event never has a theme, allowing landscapers to let their imaginations run wild.

“Every year, the landscape companies seem to come up with so many different, diverse ideas,” said Brown.

The Indianapolis Home Show dedicates more than 25,000 square feet to these lavish landscaped gardens. This year’s feature gardens offer greenery galore in the center of the West Pavilion, South Pavilion and sprinkled throughout the entire space for the 2016 Home Show. The gardens will be designed and constructed by the area’s top landscape professionals.

As the official Indianapolis Home Show Florist, McNamara Florist will set the scene with beautiful customized floral designs at the entryways to the Home Show and throughout the Show’s three exhibit buildings. McNamara

is creating a feature garden display and will sell fresh flowers throughout the show.

Architect and interior designer John Gidding brings his wealth and breadth of experience to HGTV’s “Curb Appeal.”

Born in Istanbul, Gidding attended American schools in Turkey and Switzerland before entering Yale University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in architecture.

An enthusiastic art and math student, he also earned a master’s degree in architecture from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design.

John has enjoyed practicing his love of design with projects around the world, ranging from residential and institutional architecture to landscape and urban design.

Some of his favorites: consulting on projects for Brooklyn Bridge Park, Union Square in New York, the campus plan for Carnegie Mellon University and a pavilion for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Before beginning his career in TV, John got his start as a

fashion model and worked the runways for Armani and Gucci.

Later, Gidding put his education and design skills to work as host and designer for a TV series about hip teens looking to update their spaces. He also worked as a lead designer on HGTV’s popular series “Designed to Sell.”

As owner of the New York City-based John Gidding Design Inc., John has done numerous residential renovations in New York and around the country.

On “Curb Appeal,” John helps you look at your home with a fresh eye and offers tips for turning great ideas into reality. Each episode features a real house and homeowner with guest experts who discuss the owner’s needs and propose projects to improve the home’s appearance. Then the crew goes to work, transforming outdated and boring homes with stunning makeovers.

Licensed contractor/realtor Matt Blashaw is a host for HGTV and the DIY Network, a construction junkie, tool hoarder and founder of the Build for Love Foundation, providing room makeovers and home improvements for children dealing with illness or disability.

The son of an engineer and a home builder, construction is in Matt’s

blood. The Orange County, California native began his building career at a very young age in his dad’s lumberyard. He dove into fix-it projects around his family’s home and worked on everything from plumbing to electrical.

In high school, he took his skills to the stage and built sets for theater productions. Matt’s love for construction and the arts led him to his B.F.A. in film and TV production from Chapman University.

Since graduation, Blashaw has enjoyed working in many different sectors of the construction and entertainment industries. He spent five years in the technical services department at Disney, and shortly after, he got his contractor’s license and began working as a self-employed general contractor specializing in remodeling homes. That

led to a deep understanding of real estate. Matt feltinspired to sell homes and became a licensed REALTOR® for Century 21.

In 2006, Blashaw entered a TV contest for DIY Network’s “Stud Finder,” a search for America’s next top handyman. Though he did not win (he was runner-up), the exposure led to a small role on an HGTV show and an audition to be the host of DIY Network’s new show, “Deconstruction.”

He landed the spot on what would become a very successful show and has been a contracted host for the DIY Network ever since. He has hosted several series for DIY Network and HGTV, including “Project Xtreme,” “Money Hunters,” “Blog Cabin” and “Professional Grade.”

Currently, Matt hosts the hit series “Yard Crashers” airing on both DIY Network and HGTV. [He also recently worked on “Ellen’s Design Challenge,” with executive producer Ellen DeGeneres putting furniture designers to the test with a workshop, a lead carpenter and all the tools they need for various challenges designing and building amazing furniture creations.]

“Find Your Wings and Fly” with Designer Liz HendersonDesigner-blogger Liz Henderson gives new budget-friendly life to homesWith a passion for vintage, Liz Henderson is an “interior dreamer” at heart and loves to give new budget-friendly life to homes and other spaces.

Liz resigned from her job as a radio producer in Chicago to discover what truly makes her come alive in this life. Prior to working in radio, she found her interest in broadcasting as the associate producer of “You and Me This Morning” at WCIU-TV in Chicago.

When Henderson and her husband Mike moved from Chicago to Indianapolis, she became obsessed with vintage. Nearly every weekend, she would scour barn sales, estate sales, garage sales and local antique shops and load up her car with new “old” items.

Confessing her “vintage hoarding,” Henderson takes everything from old frames and windows to birdcagesand vintage lockers and turns them into new treasures for your home.

She is addicted to hunting for the perfect piece at a bargain price. “There’s just something about bringing an old piece of furniture to life with a fresh coat of paint. It’s sweetly satisfying.”

These days, Liz and her husband Mike have been featured on HGTV’s “House Hunters” and “Where Are They Now,” DIY Network’s “Renovation Realities,” MSNBC’s “The Elkhart Project,” RELEVANT Magazine, Midday Connection and Hamilton County Family Magazine.

Henderson also hopes to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves and enjoys serving as the communications director for Hands of Hope Adoption and Orphan Care Ministry.

She and her husband currently live in Westfield and enjoy meeting people throughout the Midwest through their vintage-inspired pop-up shop, Ruffled Feathers Boutique.

Two Chicks and a Hammer Hit the Nail on the HeadMother/daughter team from Indianapolis shoots to fame on HGTV


Karen E Laine and Mina Starsiak are the mother and daughter behind Two Chicks and a Hammer, a home remodeling company they started in 2007. So far they have renovated more than 20 houses in the Fountain Square and Bates-Hendricks neighborhoods in their hometown of Indianapolis.

The women shot to fame recently by appearing in a pilot television show on HGTV. The network picked up the pilot and will air the show for a full season starting early 2016.

Laine practiced law for more than two decades and just recently shut down her practice to devote her time to Two Chicks and a Hammer. She is a master gardener who loves honey bees and saving the planet.

One of Laine’s four children, Starsiak graduated from Indiana University in 2007 and waited tables at the local Pizzology while building up the Two Chicks and a Hammer company.

With a mutual passion for rehabilitating homes, the duo

maintains focus in one geographical area so they can make a real impact on the community — not bounce around for the cheapest, easiest flip.

Karen and Mina buy many of their homes through the Renew Indianapolis program, which helps homebuyers purchase abandoned properties. They have purchased several homes from the city, a few of them off the demolition list. They bring the properties back to life instead of letting them be torn down, which would leave empty lots that are typically not well maintained.

Both mother and daughter call Fountain Square home and are committed to the revitalization of the neighborhood as well as Fountain Square’s neighbor, Bates-Hendricks.

With Mina’s real estate know-how and Karen’s no-nonsense legal background, these ladies are unstoppable in getting a property they want and enlisting their family’s help with demo and construction. When it comes to exciting new homes in the city of Indianapolis, it all comes down to Two Chicks and a Hammer.

Also known as Basilmomma, Heather Tallman is an Indianapolis-based food personality and family meal advocate, food writer, blogger, newspaper columnist, freelance writer and host of Around the Kitchen Sink Radio.

Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp is a confessed hortiholic and admits her eyes are too big for her yard. You just can’t have enough plants!

A Longtime Garden Writers Association (GWA) member, Jo Ellen has served as regional and national director and has been secretary for the past two years.

She is interested in continuing her involvement with GWA as its treasurer.

Jo Ellen has also been a board member and officer for other nonprofit organizations, including the Indianapolis Museum of Art Horticultural Society, the Friends of Garfield Park, Business Ownership Initiative and Entrepreneurs Alliance of Indiana, where she gained experience and success at grant writing and as a fundraiser. “Butcher Babe” and Food Network Star Finalist Loreal Gavin Cooks from the SoulLocal Indianapolis butcher turns in her cleaver for a reality TV closeup

Loreal Gavin is a motorcycle-riding, guitar-playing chick who loves tattoos. She is also an Indianapolis chef and butcher trained in baking and pastry.

A Louisiana native raised by her grandmother, Gavin describes herself as “a little baby grandma inside this curvy lady.”

She attended Sullivan University for culinary arts for two years, and then went on for training in baking and pastry. She ended up working for three years in a family-owned butcher shop, Kincaid’s Meat Market in Indianapolis.

When Gavin left Kincaid’s in 2013, she headed to San Francisco to follow her musician boyfriend. There she was looking for jobs on Craigslist and happened to see an ad for casting on the cooking competition show “Food Network Star.”

In her casting video, Gavin said, “I know how to ride a motorcycle. I own a motorcycle. I know how to take care of business all by myself, and I bring home the bacon.” When she’s cooking, Gavin likes to incorporate food and science together in a way that’s not complicated.

Gavin was cast on Season 10 of “Food Network Star,” and was a finalist. She impressed the judges — celebrity chefs Alton Brown, Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis — with her sour-cream pound cake (from her grandma’s recipe) with creme fraiche, bourbon and bacon. In another episode, she schooled co-host Alton Brown on how to prep a piece of meat for chicken-fried steak.

She also trademarked the Butcher Babe brand she coined on one of the episodes, when she cooked the thin steak known in Indiana as a Hoosier rib eye. Taught to cook from her soul, Gavin is a true individual who believes every meal should be interesting.

Sara Davis is the DIY home décor blogger behind “Sincerely, Sara D.” Sara believes she was created to create and loves sharing her work in hopes of inspiring others through her trial and error. In her DIY project tutorials, Sara shows

anyone can create a beautiful space with little cost and effort while giving others the confidence to create!

Before “Sincerely, Sara D.,” Davis worked as an art director in the greeting card industry and then as a stay-at-home mom. Needing a creative outlet and a little sanity from three young kids, she painted. The walls in Sara’s home were her canvas and home décor her passion. She was determined to create a beautiful space without breaking the bank.

In 2013, Sara began documenting her creative efforts at SincerelySaraD.com. Many of her projects center around paint, and there is (almost) nothing she hasn’t painted. From walls to faucets and floors to fabrics, she frequently illustrates how paint has the power to make a large impact and transform a space.

Davis and her husband Steve live in Pendleton, Ind., with their three children, Bryant, Benson and Lena. Sara’s work has been published in “Design Mom: How to Live with Kids,” a book by Gabrielle Stanley, and numerous magazines including “Make It Organized.” Her highly anticipated e-book, “Painting Furniture,” is set to be released in January 2016.

When not blogging or driving children to and from sports and school events, she teaches classes, consults with home décor clients and encourages others to create.

At the Home Show, Sara will be sharing how to update and restore outdated furniture using various simple painting techniques, illustrating the differences in these techniques. From spray paint to chalk paint, there are many options, and she will illustrate how you can use various techniques and a little creativity to transform an old piece of furniture into something new.

Irvin Etienne is the horticultural display coordinator at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, where he has worked for more than 20 years.

In that position, he helps the horticulturists with their plant selections and garden designs as well as designing and maintaining his own areas.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art’s gardens and grounds are renowned for their beauty and history. The 52-acre complex east of the canal includes: Oldfields, a 26-acre American Country Place estate that has been recognized as a National Historic Landmark as well as the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s 26-acre main campus, which offers views of Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE sculpture.

Tours of the area feature stately mature trees and lawns plus many areas planted with a variety of garden species, both common and rare.

Working in the IMA’s gardens and grounds requires knowledge and skill with all manner of woody and herbaceous plants. But Irvin lusts for and loves the tropical species most of all.

He is the recipient of gold and silver awards in electronic media writing from the Garden Writers Association for his blogging at the IMA.

In his own garden, everything from cannas to eggplants and magnolias grow together in a lush jungle fed by manure from his own rabbits and chickens. Certainly a product of the MidWest, Etienne could be considered a simple farm boy who likes shiny sparkly things — and is easily distracted.

A nationally-recognized expert on herbaceous plants and garden design, Irvin has a planting panache for all things green.

Each year, the Home Show’s wine garden guests get a taste of something new from Brower/Jacques Design —a Greenfield company specializing in custom outdoor spaces. This year, Brower/Jacques collaborated more closely with PRP Wine International to create an atmosphere that embodies the flavor of the wines. Jacques wants the garden

to complement the wine rather than exist apart from it.

“Last year, people seemed to gravitate toward the two spaces separately, thinking ‘Here’s what landscape architects do and over there is what wine people do,” Jacques said.

PRP Wine International draws from vineyards all over the world, pinpointing wines that best represent various regions. Brower/Jacques wants the garden to be a similarly international creation.

“I can’t wait to see the look on people’s faces when they’re transported to this other world,” Jacques said. “I hope it makes them dream about unique design possibilities that are different than what’s typically represented in our region. I want them to get inspired by taking this mental trip to another country.”

A new addition last year, the Unilock Craft Beer Corner will be designed by William H. Brown Landscaping Inc. again for the 2016 Home Show.
