Wuerl called on Catholics to deepen their faith and to share it with others. “All around us are people who should truly be with us at Mass, who should be with us at church, who should be with us in the parish,” Cardinal Wuerl said on Sept. 30 in an address at the John Carroll Society’s annual brunch following the Red Mass. The cardinal addressed the group of Catholic professionals and business men and women on the eve of his departure for Rome, where he will attend and serve as “relator,” or general secretary, for the Oct. 7-28 Synod for the New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith. CNS photo/Christopher Newkumet See WUERL, page 2 VATICAN CITY (CNS)—When Blessed John Paul II launched the project he called the new evangelization, he made it clear that it was aimed above all at reviving the ancient faith of an increasingly faithless West—“countries and nations where religion and the Christian life were formerly flourishing,” now menaced by a “constant spreading of religious indifference, secularism and atheism.” Those words are commonly taken to refer to Christianity’s traditional heartland, Europe. Yet, Pope Benedict XVI, who has enthusiastically embraced his predecessor’s initiative, has made it clear that the new evangelization extends to other secular Western societies, including the United States. In a series of speeches to visiting U.S. bishops last fall and earlier this year, Pope Benedict reflected on the “spiritual and cultural challenges of the new evangelization,” giving special emphasis to a “radical secularism” that he said has worn away America’s traditional moral consensus and threatened its religious freedom. The world Synod of Bishops dedicated to the new evangelization, which meets at the Vatican on Oct. 7-28, will include seven U.S. bishops as full members, and 10 other Americans as official experts or observers. Experts advise the bishops during the synod, and observers are allowed to address the entire assembly. Three weeks ago, Patriarch Fouad Twalof Jerusalem was in Lebanon during thehistoric visit by Pope Benedict XVI andthousands of Catholics who gathered therefrom across the Middle East.

The visit took place in a regionembroiled in violence—from a civil warraging in nearby Syria to violent protests infront of American embassies in severalMiddle Eastern countries.

This past weekend, though, PatriarchTwal, who oversees the Latin Rite Churchin Cyprus, Israel, Jordan and the Palestinianterritories, had a very different kind ofmeeting in a setting that greatly contrastedfrom Lebanon.

Sister Sara Butler, a professor oftheology at the University ofSt. Mary of the Lake inMundelein, Ill., who will serve as asynod expert, said a commonAmerican understanding of“tolerance” views “any attempt toshare the faith ... as a kind of‘imperialism,’ ” and the U.S. mediacelebrate an idea of freedomdefined as “freedom from restraintsof any kind.”

This leaves many Catholics “shyabout revealing their faith, muchless sharing it with others,” saidSister Sara, a member of theMissionary Servants of theMost Blessed Trinity, who sits onthe Vatican’s InternationalTheological Commission. “Theyfind the idea that they arecommissioned to proclaim theGospel to the world challenging andimplausible.”

Changing that attitude willrequire more than improvedinstruction in the tenets of the faith,said synod expert Ralph Martin,president of Renewal Ministries inAnn Arbor, Mich., and director ofgraduate programs in the new

evangelization at Sacred HeartSeminary in Detroit.

“Orthodoxy isn’t enough. Wereally need an infusion of God andthe Holy Spirit,” said Martin, whohas been a leader in the charismaticrenewal movement since the 1970s.

“You can’t have a newevangelization without a newPentecost,” he said.

Edward N. Peters, a canonlawyer who teaches at Sacred HeartSeminary and will serve as anexpert during the synod, drawsencouragement from what he callsthe relatively “up-front” manner ofAmerican Catholics by comparisonto their European counterparts.

“Conversations about the faithby rank-and-file Catholics,participation in the Church’s publicrites and devotions, readingCatholic literature, and so on, all ofthese seem to me much morecommon on this side of theAtlantic,” said Peters, author of theblog “In the Light of the Law.”

Synod observer Peter Murphy,executive director of the Secretariatof Evangelization and Catechesis atthe U.S. Conference of CatholicBishops, said an American culturecapable of generating a fashion for“What Would Jesus Do” braceletsis also a natural environment fortraditional expressions of Catholicidentity, such as religious medals.

He said ordinary Catholics canturn even mundane occasions, suchas a child’s soccer practice, into

opportunities for sharing their faith.Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas of

Tucson, Ariz., said the Church’scharitable activities are some of itsmost effective vehicles for the newevangelization.

“Works of charity and justice areone of the most powerful ways toinspire people to see what theChurch is, and think about why theymight want to re-engage with it or… meet the Lord for the first time,”said Bishop Kicanas, chairman ofthe board of Catholic ReliefServices, who will attend the synodinstead of Cardinal FrancisE. George of Chicago, who isundergoing chemotherapy.

For Cardinal Donald W. Wuerlof Washington, the synod’s generalsecretary, the primary mission fieldfor the new evangelization in theU.S. will be its vast network ofCatholic schools, colleges anduniversities because the key tosuccess lies in reviving faith amongthe young.

“The focus is truly on thisgeneration that we’re dealing withright now because what we’relooking to is the future of theChurch,” the cardinal told CNSearlier this year.

Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz ofLouisville, Ky., is taking thatprinciple to the ultimate level—theearliest stages of human life. In hispresentation to the synod, thearchbishop plans to highlight the riteof Blessing of a Child in the Womb,

New York, has said is inherent inthe new evangelization, which seeksto be “embracing, understanding[and] conciliatory” towarddisaffected Catholics withoutcompromising on “certain clearmoral truths” that they may reject.

As the cardinal told CNS late lastyear, Blessed John Paul II offered a“graceful” resolution of that tensionin his maxim that the Churchshould “preach the truth, alwayswith love.”

“Love would require that wenever soft-pedal the truth,”Cardinal Dolan said. “Truth wouldrequire that we never forgetcompassion and patience.” †

As a sacred celebration thatemphasizes a widely contestedethical teaching, the blessingreflects the “creative tension”that another synod father,Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of

The Year of Faith begins on Oct. 11 andcoincides with the 50th anniversary of theopening day of the Second Vatican Council andthe 20th anniversary of the day that theCatechism of the Catholic Church waspromulgated. Msgr. Peter Vaghi, pastor of the Church of theLittle Flower Parish in Bethesda, Md., andchaplain to the John Carroll Society, alsoaddressed the brunch. He said that the “two firmanchors” to making the Year of Faith asuccess are to understand the teachings of theSecond Vatican Council and to read theCatechism of the Catholic Church.

Msgr. Vaghi said that Pope Benedict proposedthe Year of Faith because he saw a need forCatholics “to recover a sense of joy in our faith.

“Accept and embrace the challenge to seefaith as a lifelong journey,” the priest urged thoseat the brunch. “Rediscover the power, the beautyand life-giving nature of our faith.” †

Our Lady of Perpetual Help parishioner Sandra Bierly ofNew Albany and St. Michael parishioner Patrick Stutz ofGreenfield will receive distinguished pro-life volunteerservice awards from the archdiocese on Respect Life Sunday.

They will be honored at the conclusion of thearchdiocesan Respect Life Mass on Oct. 7 at SS. Peter andPaul Cathedral, 1347 N. Meridian St., in Indianapolis.

Father Stephen Giannini, vice chancellor andarchdiocesan vicar for clergy and parish life coordinators, isthe principal celebrant for the pro-life Mass, which begins at1 p.m. He will represent Bishop Christopher J. Coyne,apostolic administrator, during the liturgy and awardsceremony.

After the Mass, Catholics will participate in theecumenical Central Indiana Life Chain prayer vigil from2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. along North Meridian Street inIndianapolis.

Both Respect Life Award recipients have participated in anumber of pro-life projects in recent years.

“Her words, actions and prayersall point to a final goal of greaterrespect for all human life fromconception to natural death,” Walkerand Slusser wrote. “… Sandy isconstantly thinking of ways to openpeople’s minds and hearts to thevalue of life at our parish. Through

her efforts, our parish now has a petition that prays forgreater respect for life at every weekend Mass.”

Walker, director of music, and Slusser, parish secretary,

noted that Bierly has headed “an ever-growing pro-lifecommittee for over five years.”

Bierly also coordinates a media advertising campaign topromote respect for life, student pro-life essay project,Mother’s Day rose sale and baby bottle fundraiser in theNew Albany Deanery parish to benefit pro-life organizations.

Each Monday, Bierly helps present an hour of eucharisticadoration and “Rosary for Life” at Our Lady of PerpetualHelp Church. She also devotes many hours to peacefulprayers outside an abortion facility without time off for foodor rest.

Last year, Bierly made nearly 500 rosaries to promote theparish’s weekly “Rosary for Life” effort among schoolfamilies. To facilitate that devotion, she helped the pro-lifecommittee organize a “Meet Me at the Benches” time forparents to gather outside the school on weekday afternoonsand pray the rosary before picking up their children.

She also promotes the Life Chain and Respect LifeSunday Mass each year by encouraging parishioners to travelfrom southern Indiana to Indianapolis for the archdiocesanpro-life observance.

This year, a large group of Our Lady of Perpetual Helpparishioners will be at the cathedral to pray for the cause oflife and applaud as Bierly accepts her award.

She also participates in the National March for Life inWashington, and volunteers as a pro-life counselor atChoices for Women and the Pregnancy Resource Center insouthern Indiana.

Bierly also makes time to help with Right to Life ofSouthern Indiana projects as well as visit sick andhomebound Catholics to bring the Eucharist to them as anextraordinary minister of holy Communion.

She and her husband, Rich, are the parents of three grownchildren. They have eight grandchildren.

When she learned of her award, Bierly offered her thanksto Bishop Paul D. Etienne, the former pastor and now bishopof the Diocese of Cheyenne, Wyo., who asked her to serve asparish pro-life coordinator in 2006.

“As I look back at the last six years, I see how I havegrown as a person and how we have grown as a parish in ourawareness of the sacredness of all life and the reality ofabortion,” Bierly said. “I am so grateful for our pro-life team,

our parishioners and the support of our pastor,Father Eric Augenstein. Without their help, we would nothave the vivacious and perseverant, life-promoting parishthat we now have.”

‘Truly an advocate for pro-life’Patrick Stutz, a senior at Greenfield Central High School,

will receive the 2012 Our Lady of Guadalupe Pro-Life YouthAward for his exemplary efforts to promote respect for life asa teenager.

He is the son of St. Michael parishioners John andMichelle Stutz of Greenfield, andhas four siblings.

Paula Richey, coordinator ofyouth and family ministries atSt. Michael Parish, said Patrick is“passionate about the dignity andsanctity of human life, … verystrong in his beliefs [and] truly anadvocate for pro-life” who leadsother youths by his dedicationto service.

Two years ago, he participated ina summer mission trip with theIndianapolis East Deanery parish’s

youth group to help impoverished people displaced byflooding in Nashville, Tenn.

Patrick and three friends recently organized a concert toraise funds for a local soup kitchen that serves the poor.

He keeps busy as a student-athlete, four-year member ofthe swim team, All-State Honor Choir member and cantorfor Masses, Richey said, but always finds time toparticipate in pro-life projects, including praying outsideabortion facilities with his father to try to save livesand souls.

Patrick enjoys studying science, and said the reality thatlife begins at conception is “a proven scientific fact.”

The Catholic Church teaches the truth about the sanctityand dignity of life from conception to natural death, he said.“I firmly believe that [unborn babies] should be respected ashuman life just as we respect each other as humans. … Weneed to stand up for those who don’t have a voice.” †

Perhaps Salman Rushdie, who knowssomething about the anger of

extremist Muslims, said it as well asanyone. “It’s not OK to kill someone ifyou declare you’re offended bysomething.”

Rushdie, of course, was accused ofoffending Islam with his 1988 novelThe Satanic Verses. For years, he was inhiding because of a 1989 judgment, orfatwa, by Ayatollah Khomeini, thespiritual leader of Iran at the time, thatRushdie should die because he judgedhis novel to be blasphemous.

Rushdie made the statement above inan interview with Steve Inskeep onNational Public Radio. He also said that“something’s wrong inside the Muslimworld” that permits extremists to riotand kill whenever they think that theprophet Mohammed has been defamed.

Muslim extremists have riotedthroughout the Middle East because of afilm produced by someone in theUnited States that portrayedMohammed as a sex-crazed simpleton.The fact that the film has beencondemned by President Barack Obamahas had no effect as anti-AmericanMuslims used it as a pretext forviolent protests.

The most serious incident was thekilling of the U.S. ambassador to Libya,Christopher Stevens, who had been agreat friend of the Libyan people, andthree colleagues. That riot might ormight not have had anything to do withthe film. The violence spread to Egypt,Yemen, Lebanon, Tunisia, Gaza,Afghanistan, Pakistan and othercountries.

All this violence, which wasimmediately condemned by the Vatican,has Middle Eastern Christians on edge.They fear that the film’s associationwith the Christian West makes thempossible targets of extremists.

Bishop Adel Zaki of Alexandria,Egypt’s vicar for Latin-rite Catholics,said, “What happens outside the countryis very dangerous for us because it isperceived to be related to us inside.”

In Pakistan, Catholic leaders quicklycondemned the film, hoping to avoidpossible anti-Christian backlash. And inNiger, the Islamic Council of Niger feltit necessary to ask Muslims not toattack Christian churches to protestthe film.

We have to agree with Rushdie thatthere is something wrong with the

Muslim world that makes it seem allright for people whose religioussensibilities are offended to respond withdestruction and murder. It’s difficult toknow what Americans and Christianscan do to put a stop to all thisinsane violence.

We feel sympathy for AmericanMuslims who often feel the brunt oftheir religion’s extremists in other partsof the world. Let’s hope and pray thatthere isn’t a backlash against them, mostof whom have learned to appreciateAmerican values like freedom of speechand religion.

American Muslims have not riotedeven though the film was made in theUnited States.They know that theUnited States is not anti-Muslim. Indeed,our country is far more welcoming toShia Muslims than Saudi Arabia is.

Should the United States get out ofthe Middle East as those Muslimextremists want? That’s certainlytempting, considering the amount ofmoney the United States has contributedto some of the countries.

The Economist is one periodical thatdoesn’t think so. “In general, Americashould do more in the Middle East, notless,” it said in its Sept. 15 issue. Itopined that “the Arab Spring, for all itsmessiness, is still broadly moving inthe right direction,” and “if the Arabeconomies fail, the cost to the world ofever more angry young men beingturfed out of work could be immense.”

Pope Benedict XVI has the right idea.He has called on Muslims and Christiansto work together to combat thesecularism that has taken over much ofthe world.

One place where Muslims andChristians do work together is inPalestine, thanks largely to efforts bythe Franciscan Foundation for theHoly Land and Bethlehem University.

As easy as it might be to becomeanti-Muslim because of what ishappening in the Middle East, we mustnot succumb to those feelings.

As Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas ofTucson, Ariz., chairman of the board ofCatholic Relief Services, said onSept. 12, “We need to understand whatfaith groups hold dear.” He said thatviolence in the name of faith is not inkeeping with the teachings of Islam,Christianity or other religions.”

This October, the Catholic Churchthroughout the United States will observe

Respect Life Month.This annual tradition isnow in its 41st year.

Beginning on Oct.7,Respect Life Sunday,our nation’s Catholicswill be called to renewtheir personalcommitment to defendall human life,especially the most

vulnerable members of the human family.They will demonstrate this commitment in avariety of ways—by participating in prayerservices and educational conferences,engaging in public witness and advocacy,and helping to offer Church and communityservices to those in need.

The theme of this year’s Respect LifeProgram is one often expressed byPope Benedict XVI: “Faith opens our eyesto human life in all its grandeur and beauty.”

He reiterated this insight during hisrecent visit to Lebanon.

“The effectiveness of our commitment topeace depends on our understanding ofhuman life. If we want peace, let us defendlife! This approach leads us to reject notonly war and terrorism, but every assault oninnocent human life, on men and women ascreatures willed by God. … The grandeurand the raison d’être of each person arefound in God alone. The unconditionalacknowledgement of the dignity of everyhuman being, of each one of us, and of thesacredness of human life is linked to theresponsibility which we all have beforeGod. We must combine our efforts, then, todevelop a sound vision of … the humanperson. Without this, it is impossible tobuild true peace.”

These links among faith, the inherentdignity and rights of human beings, and ajust and peaceful society were alsounderstood by America’s Founding Fathers.

As George Washington remarked in his“Farewell Address,” “Let us with cautionindulge the supposition that morality can bemaintained without religion. … Reason andexperience both forbid us to expect thatnational morality can prevail in exclusion ofreligious principle.”

How can people coexist, much lessflourish, in a society lacking the sharedbelief that we are called to care for thoseunable to care for themselves, not toneglect, abuse or kill them? Such basicmoral principles have served civilizationwell for millennia.

Yet, in recent decades, many people whoinfluence public policy have promotedvarious exceptions to these principles.

Initially, medical neglect of the mostvulnerable people at the beginning and endof life—those with disabilities or apotentially fatal disease—was tolerated asan exception to accepted standards of care.In time, neglect led to the acceptance ofactive measures to end the lives of suchhuman beings, whose existence came tobe viewed as a “burden.” Now, earlyinduction and late-term abortion for“fetal anomalies,” and doctor-assisted deathby overdose for the sick and elderly are notonly state-approved but even publiclyfunded in some states.

Nationwide, even healthy unbornchildren are at risk of being killed at anytime before birth under Roe v. Wade.

Many fertility procedures used to helpcouples take home a baby result in manydead human embryos for each one who isborn. When “excess” babies successfullyimplant and develop in a mother’s orsurrogate’s womb, fertility specialists oftenpropose “selective reduction,” inducing aheart attack in each “excess” child. TheNational Institutes of Health still fundshuman embryonic stem-cell (hESC)research, which involves killing humanembryos to harvest their stem cells, despitethe remarkable track record of adult andcord blood stem cells in helping patientswith some 72 diseases and the lack of

similar results from hESCs.Until recently, at least accommodation

was made for health care providers who, as amatter of faith or conscience, will not takepart in killing or in other procedures theybelieve to be gravely wrong. Yet now,many government officials believe thatmaximum access to the full range of“reproductive rights”—abortion, sterilization,contraceptives and abortifacient drugs—trumps the right of believers to live and actaccording to their faith.

Under the “preventive services” mandateof the Affordable Care Act, Catholicemployers and most Catholic institutionsoffering health coverage to their employeeswill be forced to cover all these objectionableitems. Under the administration’s rule, evenindividuals who work for these Catholicinstitutions will have no right to rejectsuch coverage for themselves or theirminor children.

The nationwide death toll from abortionssince 1973 is staggering—equal to the entirecombined populations of California, Oregon,Washington, Idaho, Utah and Nevada. Putanother way, it is as if every man, womanand child now living in the Gulf Coast statesfrom Texas to Florida, or every person livingin the Atlantic Coast states from Mainethrough Virginia, had perished fromthe Earth.

And yet, the number of deaths alonecannot begin to convey the full impact of theloss to families and to our nation of eachunique, unrepeatable human being, who wascreated with the capacity to love, learn, shareand contribute to their families and to ourcountry. Nor can numbers convey the depthof grief and pain experienced by the parentsand grandparents of aborted children, manyof whom contact the Catholic Church’s post-abortion ministry—Project RachelMinistry—for relief from their suffering, andfor healing, forgiveness and hope.

Can anyone claim that our country isbetter off now because of Roe v. Wade than itwas 40 years ago? The close bonds,commitments and sacrifices for others, oncemodeled in families and carried intoneighborhoods, civic organizations andcommunities, have gradually eroded.

Thankfully, positive signs are emergingthat give reason for hope. Polls show thatAmericans increasingly identify themselvesas pro-life. At the state level, the shift hasresulted in the passage of scores of pro-lifelaws in recent years, no doubt contributingto the steady decline in the number ofabortions. The youths who have come ofage since Blessed Pope John Paul IIinaugurated World Youth Day not onlyembrace the cause of life, they are activelyinvolved in promoting life through socialmedia and services to those in need. AdultCatholics as well, exposed for years to themedia’s caricatures of Catholic teaching,are often surprised by the wisdom andrightness of those teachings when they aregiven an opportunity to learn moreabout them.

That is why Respect Life Month and theYear of Faith are vitally important. DuringOctober, and throughout the Year of Faithannounced by Pope Benedict and set to beginon Oct. 11, Catholics are invited to gain adeeper understanding of the teachings of ourfaith. For our part, we need to live out theseteachings more faithfully, witness them moreradiantly in our actions, and propose them toothers in fresh and engaging ways.

By our unflinching defense of human lifeand religious freedom, by our witness to thetranscendent nature of the human person, andby our compassionate service to our brothersand sisters in need, may we spark a renewalof love and commitment to the true good ofothers. Only a love that seeks to serve thosemost in need, whatever the personal cost tous, is strong enough to overcome a culture ofdeath and build a civilization worthy ofhuman beings made in God’s image.

Hundreds of Catholic men from acrossthe state will gather on Oct. 20 at theIndiana Convention Center in Indianapolisfor the seventh annual Indiana CatholicMen’s Conference.

This year’s conference will featureseveral speakers, including George Weigel,distinguished senior fellow at theWashington-based Ethics andPublic Policy Center and a biographer ofBlessed John Paul II.

Father Michael Lightner, a priest of theArchdiocese of Milwaukee, will also be aspeaker at the conference. Before discerninga call to the priesthood, Father Lightner wasa National Football League prospect as astandout offensive lineman atEastern Michigan University.

A Marian pilgrimage that he went on,however, changed his life forever.

Mark Houck, co-founder and presidentof The King’s Men, an organizationdedicated to helping Catholic men growdeeper in their faith, will also speak at theconference.

Gus Lloyd, host of “Seize the Day” onSirius XM satellite radio, is anotherconference speaker.

Although raised in the Catholic faith,Lloyd left the Church for a time. He and hisfamily later returned after one of hisdaughters almost drowned.

Mike Fox, a member of St. Pius X Parishin Indianapolis, has been a conferenceorganizer since its inception. Although hehas participated in six conferences, heknows from experience that he will learnsomething new and be strengthened in hisfaith with each new gathering.

“I have said from the beginning that theconference is Holy Spirit driven, and we arenot in charge,” Fox said. “We seem toalways have the right speakers for the timeand year even though we often wanted tobring in a different speaker. After the talks,we often say, ‘Wow, now we know why thatspeaker was to be in Indianapolis to givea talk.’ ”

Fox said he thinks this year’s conferencecan be especially helpful for Catholic mento respond to the growing challenge to theChurch and religious freedom in society andgovernments at various levels.

“We are seeing a very big challenge toour Church all over the world and, ofcourse, in our country—the Church and itscharities as well as schools are under directattack by the HHS [Department of Health

and Human Services] mandate, thedemeaning of the institution of marriageand, of course, the taking of innocent ofhuman life,” Fox said. “Many goodCatholics do not know why the CatholicChurch stands firm with many issues. It isall of our responsibility to learn why. I amsure that some of this will be addressed insome of the talks at the conference.”

The 2012 Indiana Catholic Men’sConference will begin at 8:30 a.m. andconclude at 4:30 p.m. In addition to thespeakers, the conference will also includeMass, eucharistic adoration and theopportunity for the sacrament ofreconciliation.

For men who register before Oct. 8, thecost of the conference will be $45 perperson or $40 per person for groups of 10 ormore. The registration fee increases to $50on Oct. 9.

NEWARK, N.J. (CNS)—Marriage is “not created by lawor the state” because it is “a natural and pre-politicalinstitution,” Archbishop John J. Myers of Newark said in apastoral reflection issued on Sept. 25.

“Governments rightly recognize it in law, and protect andsupport it for the sake of the common good,” but “the truthof marriage is ... part of the natural law,” Archbishop Myerssaid in his reflection.

Titled “When Two Become One,” the document discussesthe definition, meaning and sanctity of marriage as a unionof man and woman.

A news release said the reflection, which “is consistentwith the teaching and tradition of the Catholic Church,” wasaimed at helping “the faithful of the archdiocese form their

consciences, discern their vocations and, for the married,fulfill their vows.”

He also addressed the push for legalization of same-sexmarriage and spoke out against the use of contraception inmarriage.

“Many young people today have not experiencedpermanence and faithfulness in the familial relationshipsaround them,” Archbishop Myers wrote. “This impedes theirappreciation of the truth about marriage, and makes itdifficult for them to make serious and permanentcommitments which overcome self-regard in favor of thegood of others and the common good.”

The pastoral reflection was published in the Sept. 26 issueof The Catholic Advocate, the archdiocesan newspaper.

The archbishop said that although “sexual difference andcomplementarity” have always been part of God’s plan formarriage, “the current state of marriage in our Church and inour society often acts as a countersign.”

Responding to claims that equality and justice demandthe recognition of same-sex marriages, he said, “Thisargument might be stronger if the Church’s oppositionwere based solely on religious beliefs, and same-sexrelationships were equivalent to conjugal partnerships thathave historically been denoted by the word ‘marriage.’Neither is true.”

The Obama administration announced on June 15, 2012, that it will stop deportingyoung adults who came to the U.S. as children, and it will use its administrativeauthority to grant, on a case-by-case basis, deferred action and work authorization toyoung people.

Those who will be eligible for such deferred action for two years—subject torenewal—include people who arrived in the U.S. before age 16 and younger than 30, havebeen in the U.S. for at least five continuous years, graduated from a U.S. high school orearned a general education degree (GED) or served in the U.S. armed forces, and “havenot been convicted of a felony offense, significant misdemeanor offense, multiplemisdemeanor offenses or pose a threat to national security or public safety.”

There is no deadline to apply for deferred action.Catholic Charities recommends that each person take their time, collect all of the

required documents, and fill out the application completely and correctly.

Catholic Charities to host‘Intake Day’ for immigrantseligible for deferred action

The St. John Academy Alumnae Reunion will take place on Oct. 14 at St. John theEvangelist Church, 126 W. Georgia St., in Indianapolis.

On Oct. 22, 1840,Mother Theodore Guérin andfive other members of theSisters of Providence arrived inthe wilderness of west centralIndiana to begin their ministry ofeducation and missionary workamong the Catholics along theedge of the American frontier.

The first thing that thesewomen religious did after theirlong and arduous journey fromFrance was to pray before theBlessed Sacrament in a nearbyparish church.

They visited St. Mary-of-the-Woods Parish, which had beenfounded three years earlier byFather Louis Buteux.

Today, 175 years after itsfounding, the parish still servesthe faithful in an area northwestof Terre Haute. And the Sistersof Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods are still centered attheir motherhouse on theoriginal grounds of the parish,which moved down the hill fromthe sisters in 1867.

There have also beenmembers of the Thralls family inthe parish from its beginning tothe present day.

Scott Thralls is thesixth generation of his family tobe a member of St. Mary-of-the-Woods Parish. His great-great-great-grandfather, JosephThralls, donated the land for theoriginal parish and helped buildits first church.

He also welcomedMother Theodore and her sistersinto his family’s home upontheir arrival in western Indiana.

Scott Thralls naturally feelspride in his family’s heritage athis parish. But that pride almostturns to awe when he considershow many other parishes innearby Terre Haute andthroughout west central Indianaultimately grew from it.

“It’s just amazing to thinkthat that happened in a smallplace like this—outside of thebig city and across the woodsand the river,” he said. “It’samazing to think that theCatholic community [in westcentral Indiana] all startedaround here. It’s mind boggling.”

Thralls’ pride about his

family’s past also leads him towork toward securing theparish’s future.

“It makes me feel like it’s myduty to keep it up, to make surethe parish keeps going on,”Thralls said. “There’s quite a bitof pride and a little bit of feelingof duty in it.”

In particular, he wants theseventh generation of his familyin the parish, and the childrenand teenagers of fellowparishioners to find life for theirfaith there like he and hisancestors have over the years.

“We strongly support the kidsand all of the children’sactivities through the years,”said Thralls, 49, the father ofthree sons. “We feel strongabout making the kids feelwelcome at church and knowthat that’s their home. That’swhere they belong.”

A story shared by Bob Warn,a St. Mary-of-the-Woodsparishioner, shows that at leastsome of the efforts to reach outto children and youths areworking.

Warn and his family becameparishioners in 1975 when hewas hired as the head baseballcoach at Indiana StateUniversity in Terre Haute.

After the team made it to theCollege World Series in 1986,he had the chance to move on tobigger, more prestigious schools.

“But I said ‘No,’ ” said Warn,who retired from Indiana Statein 2006. “And one of the reasonswas that our kids didn’t want toleave our parish.”

Warn has helped to organizeseveral events in the parish tomark its historic anniversary.They included a specialanniversary Mass and banqueton June 30.

On May 6, variousparishioners dressed in costumesas early members of the parishand stood by those members’graves. As other parishionerswalked through the parish’scemetery, the people in costumetold stories about the faithcommunity’s early days.

On Oct. 6, the parish issponsoring a 1.5-mile fun runand walk on the grounds of theSisters of Providencemotherhouse to benefit the

congregations’ Providence Pantry,a food pantry on the property ofthe former St. Leonard ofPort Maurice Parish in nearbyWest Terre Haute.

“It’s been a thrill,” said Warn ofthe anniversary events. “It gives usmomentum to get even morepeople involved. We’re trying toshow the way and get them torealize how much fun it is to dothings side-by-side. It’s been amajor accomplishment so far toshow people what we can do as aparish.”

One of the most significantevents connected to the 175-yearhistory of the parish was the 2006canonization of Mother Theodoreas Indiana’s first saint.

“It had a tremendous impact onthe parishioners,” said ProvidenceSister Joan Slobig, parish lifecoordinator of St. Mary-of-the-Woods Parish. “It’s like she’s oneof our own. She walked thesegrounds. So to be able toexperience that recognition ofher—someone that they feel thatthey know—was quite a profoundexperience.”

What also deepened thishistoric event was the close tiesthat parishioners have had with thesisters over several generations.

“Through the years, many ofthe families who are still activemembers worked for the Sisters ofProvidence,” Sister Joan said.“You hear story after story of theinteractions between parishionersand the Sisters of Providence.There is still a close bond.”

Sister Joan, who has ministeredin the parish since 2005, is proudto be a living symbol of thathistoric connection that dates backto the parish’s earliest days.

“It certainly is a privilege toserve this community and to beenmeshed in that common historythat we share,” she said, “andknow that the generations havecontinued to worship in this parishfrom the very beginning.”

Indianapolis can seem like a worldaway from Jerusalem.

But last weekend, some 400 Catholicsfrom across the Midwest who strive to bespiritually close to the Church theregathered in Indianapolis to learn moreabout the plight of Christians in theHoly Land and to pray with Fouad Twal,the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.

They were members—known asknights and ladies—of the EquestrianOrder of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem,an organization in the Church that datesback nearly 1,000 years.

Today, its worldwide members committhemselves to giving spiritual and financialsupport for the Latin Patriarchate ofJerusalem, which oversees the Churchin Cyprus, Israel, Jordan and thePalestinian territories.

In a keynote address that he gave onSept. 30 at the meeting, Patriarch Twalchallenged the knights and ladies “to makea difference in the life of the Church.

“Many dismiss the Church asirrelevant,” he said. “Others say it lacksvitality and dynamism. But you are theevidence that the Church is vibrantand alive.”

In particular, Patriarch Twal encouragedthe knights and ladies to be advocates forpeace in the Holy Land because, he said,America “has the key to peace in theIsraeli-Palestinian conflict.

“You have a great responsibility towardthe implementation of peace,” he said.“It is important, though, to realize that

working hard for true peace is toeveryone’s advantage. In our region, thepeace is either for all the inhabitants of theHoly Land or for no one.”

During a break at the meeting,Trudy Koci of West Bloomfield, Mich., amember of the order, said that she praysfor peace in Jerusalem.

“I love supporting the Church in Israel,”Koci said. “We’re converts to the Church,so we studied the Old Testament veryintensely as Protestants.”

Patriarch Twal also asked his listenersto pray for peace in Syria, which has beenwracked for more than a year by a bloodycivil war.

He also expressed concern about thecall that various countries, including theUnited States, have made for regimechange in Syria because the new rulersmight not be as favorable to the Christiancommunity there as the currentgovernment headed by Bashar al-Assad.

“Syria needs reforms, I am sure,”Patriarch Twal said, “but I’m asking if thisviolence is the way to have reform inSyria. We don’t want to have Syria asanother Iraq. We wait. We pray. We areagainst any kind of violence.”

The severe challenges faced by theChurch in Syria, the Holy Land andelsewhere in the Middle East makes knightAdam Scurti of Steubenville, Ohio,realistic about the potential positive effectsof the efforts of the knights and ladies tosupport the Christians there.

But he knows that they are notworking alone.

“I think that God, in his Providence,

will take care of them … ,” said Scurti.“God’s in charge, and I do firmlybelieve that it will be what he wants itto be. We just need to be open to that graceand, hopefully, have the courage to goforward.”

Although the faithful in Jerusalem isreduced in number, Patriarch Twal noted ina homily during a Sept. 30 Mass at St. Johnthe Evangelist Church in Indianapolis withthe knights and ladies that, as the mother ofall local Churches around the world, theChurch there continues to be relevant.

“The Church of Jerusalem is the Churchfrom where all the events in the universalChurch started and must start again to beauthentic,” he said.

Patriarch Twal spoke about theupcoming meeting at the Vatican of theSynod of Bishops, which will have as itstheme the “New Evangelization for theTransmission of Christian Faith.”

“Evangelization, to be new, efficient andmodern, must go back 21 centuries,”Patriarch Twal said. “[It must] go back tothe first Christian community in Jerusalem,known by its love of the Lord, known byits solidarity where everything was held incommon among the faithful.”

Mark Ford, a knight of theHoly Sepulchre and member of Our Ladyof the Most Holy Rosary Parish inIndianapolis, helped to organize themeeting of knights and ladies from acrossthe Midwest.

He said that the faith which he strives tolive out every day is consciously tied to theChurch in Jerusalem.

“As a knight of the Holy Sepulchre,

I pray daily for the Church in theHoly Land,” he said. “I offer dailysacrifices so my brothers and sisters livingthere will have the strength andperseverance to continue to live the faithand keep Christ’s presence there alive—knowing that my sacrifices are nothing incomparison to theirs.” †

conditions of the people in your flock.A. “It is normal for it to be difficult in our region. The fact

that we are responsible for [the Church in] four states—Jordan, Palestine, Israel and Cyprus—complicates an alreadycomplex situation. I have to work everywhere to assureservices in all of these states. We have borders. We have alack of freedom of movement, which is normal.

“In Bethlehem and in the Palestinian territories, they[often] cannot find any work. And so the first option that theyhave is to emigrate.

“At the same time, I have often said that if we are incharge of Calvary, then we must accept all of the challengesthat we have. We are also a Church of hope, of theResurrection, so we must have enthusiasm and hope and joyin our work.

“This joy doesn’t come from the geopoliticalcircumstances. It comes from a very spiritual dimension,from the Lord. He’s the one who said, ‘I am with you.’ Hesuffered before we did. He knew very well these narrowstreets of Jerusalem before we did. He knew what Calvarywas. He knew the cross. He knew Gethsemane.

“So this agony of the Lord goes on as the agony of ourpeople, of our faithful. And we must understand that. At thesame time, we cannot forget the Resurrection.

“So one day, we’ll have justice. One day, we will havefreedom. One day, we will have peace.

“When will this one day come? I don’t know. But wenever lose hope.”

Q. When you are far away from your home and youmeet with the knights and ladies of the Holy Sepulchre,do you find hope for the Church in the Holy Land?

A. “Before I find hope, I am a family with them. Theyare my knights. They are my ladies. They are my order. AndI am their patriarch. The link must be strong more than ever.I have come for them.”

Q. The knights and ladies, as well as other supportersof the Church in the Holy Land, work to supportvarious projects to help the Church there, such as theAmerican University of Madaba, the first Catholicuniversity in Jordan, which was established in 2009.

What are the prospects for that school? How is itgoing to be an important institution for the Christians inthe Holy Land?

A. “First of all, it is, in a certain way, a continuation ofthe education we’ve given for 150 years with the manyprimary and secondary schools that we operate.

“Second, this university can be a center for moredialogue. In Jordan, we have a more or less unique countrywhere we have stability. People can come there from all theArab countries with no problems.

“This place will teach them moderation, how to beunderstanding of Christianity and of peace, and how theycan co-exist with us in the Arab world.”

Q. How important are the American University ofMadaba, other schools and other institutions in theLatin Patriarchate to keeping Christians in theHoly Land and in other areas of the Middle East?

A. “They’re important, first of all, as a source of jobs forthem. We give them priority for this work. Already, theAmerican University of Madaba has given at least 130 jobs

to families.“As long as they work, as long as they have a house, as

long as they have hope, they stay. If they haven’t any work,they will leave.

“We are few in number—2, 3, 4 percent of the population.Others can know us only through these institutions. Ourstrength, our power, doesn’t come through our reducednumbers. They come from these institutions.

“We are few in number, but with huge institutions. And thislink to the international community and to the universalChurch gives us this credit.”

Q. How can the Catholics in central and southernIndiana help the Christians in the Holy Land andelsewhere in the Middle East?

A. “The answer is not only for the Catholics but for theothers, for non-Catholics. They must think about theHoly Land where we have our roots, where we have ourmother Church. All are invited to think about us.

“I’ve often talked about the ways that they can help.First of all, prayer, prayer, prayer, prayer.

“Second, advocacy about the situation. When you go toJerusalem and to Jordan and come back here, speak aboutyour experience, speak about what you saw, what you felt. Weneed this advocacy because a lot of people are ignorant aboutthe situation.

“And third is solidarity. Help us to go on with our situation,with our projects, with our Church, with our schools, with ourhospitals, with our new American University of Madaba.”

WASHINGTON (CNS)—Over the past severalmonths, the U.S. Catholic bishops and other religious

leaders have urged Americansto defend religious liberty inthe United States in the faceof what they see as threats tothat freedom.

And the issue continues togain momentum as theNovember election draws near.

It has been at the forefrontfor the Catholic bishops sincethe U.S. Department of Healthand Human Services (HHS)announced in January that itwould require most religiousemployers to provide free

contraceptive coverage, abortifacients and sterilizationagainst their moral objections. The bishops haverepeatedly described the mandate, which violatesChurch teaching, as a restriction on religious liberty.

Theologians and Catholic leaders discussed theissue of religious freedom at recent seminars atThe Catholic University of America andGeorgetown University in Washington, and aforum at St. John’s University in New York.

At both of the national political conventions thissummer, Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York,president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops,mentioned religious liberty in his closing prayers.

At the close of the Republican National Conventionon Aug. 30 in Tampa, Fla., he gave thanks for the“singular gift of liberty,” and prayed for a renewed“respect for religious freedom” and a “new sense ofresponsibility for freedom’s cause.”

During a closing benediction on Sept. 6 at theDemocratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., thecardinal prayed that God would “renew in all ourpeople a profound respect for religious liberty—thefirst, most cherished freedom bequeathed upon us atour founding.”

In April, the U.S. bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee onReligious Freedom issued a 12-page statement onthreats to religious liberty, including the HHS mandatebut also highlighting other examples:

• Immigration laws in Alabama and other states that

“forbid what the government deems ‘harboring’ ofundocumented immigrants.”

• Government actions in Boston, San Francisco, theDistrict of Columbia and the state of Illinois that have“driven local Catholic Charities out of the business ofproviding adoption or foster care services” because theagencies would not place children with same-sex orunmarried heterosexual couples.

• Changes in federal contracts for human traffickinggrants that require the U.S. bishops’ Migration andRefugee Services to refer clients “for contraceptive andabortion services in violation of Catholic teaching.”

On the state level, ballot measures dealing withreligious freedom protections have emerged inNorth Dakota, Missouri and Florida.

In North Dakota’s June primary election, votersultimately rejected a ballot measure to broaden stateconstitutional religious freedom provisions.

Meanwhile, Missouri voters in their August primaryapproved a similar measure which guaranteed thatpeople could pray and worship in all private and publicareas, including schools, as long as the activities arevoluntary and subject to the same rules and regulationsthat apply to all other types of speech.

Missouri legislators voted to override the governor’sveto of a religious liberty bill specifying that no oneshould be forced to pay for abortion drugs and similaritems in their health insurance when it violates theirreligious beliefs.

The Missouri law addresses the federalcontraception mandate that became effective on Aug. 1.The Missouri Catholic Conference noted that federallaw supersedes state law. However, several lawsuitschallenging the HHS mandate as unconstitutional havebeen filed in various federal courts, and if the mandateis ultimately found to be unconstitutional, the newMissouri law will stand.

In November, Florida will vote on a constitutionalamendment to prohibit discrimination againstindividuals and institutions on the basis of religiousbeliefs, and remove a long-standing ban on publicfunding “in aid of any church, sect or religiousdenomination or in aid of any sectarian institution.”

Supporters of the amendment say it is necessary toensure that social service organizations with religiousaffiliations can compete on an equal footing with other

organizations providing similar services. Opponentshave argued the amendment is an attempt to lay thegroundwork for Catholic school vouchers when faith-based organizations already receive governmentfunding for public services they provide.

Both political parties mention religious liberty intheir platforms. The Democratic Party platform statesthe Affordable Care Act “ensures that women haveaccess to contraception in their health insurance plans,”adding that President Barack Obama “has respected theprinciple of religious liberty.”

The HHS mandate does have a religious exemption,but its critics say it is so narrow it would protect onlythose religious employers who seek to inculcate theirreligion, and who primarily employ and serve people oftheir own faith.

The GOP platform uses the phrase “war on religion”to describe the Obama administration’s “attempt tocompel faith-related institutions as well as believingindividuals to contravene their deeply held religious,moral or ethical beliefs regarding health services,traditional marriage or abortion.”

The U.S. Catholic bishops, in their document“Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship”—which outlines Church teaching on contemporary issuesfor Catholic voters—speaks broadly on the issue ofreligious freedom by stating, “U.S. policy shouldpromote religious liberty and other basic human rights.”

The broader implications of religious freedom wereaddressed by Pope Benedict XVI in his mid-Septembervisit to Lebanon, where he called religious freedom abasic human right and a prerequisite for socialharmony.

The pope said peace requires a pluralisticsociety based on “mutual respect, a desire to know theother and continuous dialogue.” He also said that“religious freedom is the basic right on which manyrights depend.”

At a Sept. 12 forum at Catholic University onwhat the Catholic Church can do to defend religiousfreedom abroad, Cardinal Dolan stressed the urgency ofthe issue.

“Many need to be respectful of other religioustraditions at the same time that we unequivocallyproclaim that violence—violence in the name ofreligion—is the ultimate oxymoron,” he said. †

On Jan. 25, 1959, before asmall group of cardinals gatheredin the Basilica of St. Paul Outsidethe Walls, the newly electedPope John XXIII announced hisintention to call an ecumenicalcouncil. It would become theSecond Vatican Council.

The announcement caughteveryone by surprise. First of all,an ecumenical or “worldwide”council, such as Vatican II, is arare event in the life of the Church.Catholics count only 21 suchcouncils in the Church’s 2,000-year history. Since theProtestant Reformation 400 yearsago, there have been only two suchcouncils. An announcement likePope John’s does not come alongevery day.

Another cause for surprise hadto do with the reason for a newcouncil. Previous councils were allcalled to respond to some threatfacing the Church.

The Council of Nicaea, forexample, was convoked in 325 toaddress the Arian heresy that wastearing the Church apart. Similarly,the Council of Trent (1545-63)was an attempt to answer thechallenge of the Reformation.

When Pope John made hisannouncement, no such threatloomed on the horizon. Noobvious enemy mobilizedVatican II.

Instead, Pope John said that theidea for the council came to him asa divine inspiration, “like a flash ofheavenly light.”

In his announcement, he chosenot to identify problems. Rather,he named two positive goals. Thefirst was to promote “the enlightenment, edification and joy”of the entire Church. Thesecond was to reach out to otherChristians in a spirit of reconciliation.

The reason for the council wasproactive, not reactive. Pope Johnframed its purpose in the positiveterms of hope and opportunityrather than the negative terms ofdanger and threat.

This basic posture gave thebishops who attended Vatican II thefreedom to consider a wide arrayof concerns.

One of the first things thatPope John did was send an open-ended letter to all of theworld’s bishops asking forsuggestions for the agenda. As thecouncil unfolded, the language ofcollaboration, cooperation anddialogue took center stage. In theend, the breadth of topics treatedand the positive tone of its finaldocuments set Vatican II apart fromall previous ecumenical councils.

When Vatican II began inOctober of 1962, the CatholicChurch was seen by many as abulwark against the world. At thegrass-roots level, the Catholicexperience was marked by a richdevotional life, regular sacramentalpractice and consistent catechesis.Vocations climbed, religious lifeflourished. The postwar boom,particularly in the United States,brought a period of constructionand institutional expansion forschools, hospitals, seminaries andparishes.

If this grass-roots vitality fed thefaith of thousands, it also keptCatholics somewhat on themargins, separated from thebroader society within whichthey lived.

At the upper levels of theVatican, this separation took theform of a defensive and reactionarystance toward all things “modern.”Ever since the French Revolution,with its violent and anticlericalcast, the papacy had thrown up thedefenses. Statements from theVatican condemned newdemocratic movements, new

scientific theories, and newcurrents in art and culture.

All of these developments wereseen as an assault on the authorityof the Church and a threat to theancient truths of the tradition.Such a siege mentality continuedwell into the 20th century.

In this context, Pope John’svision came as a breath of freshair. In his opening speech at thecouncil, the pope publiclydisagreed with those “prophets ofgloom” around him who saw inmodern times only “prevaricationand ruin.”

Instead, the pope believed, Godwas moving humanity to a neworder of human relations. TheChurch needed aggiornamento—or “updating”—not because theChurch felt threatened, butbecause of its great desire to shareChrist with others.

John XXIII was no naiveoptimist. As a papal diplomat inBulgaria, Turkey and postwarFrance, he had seen the horrors ofwar and the tremors shakingEurope to its core. He becamepope in the shadow of theHolocaust, amidst the dismantlingof colonialism, the rise of theCold War and on the cusp of atechnological transformationunlike anything the world had seensince the Industrial Revolution.

What is remarkable is thatPope John—and by extension theSecond Vatican Council—did notretreat from the challenges of thetimes. His experience taught himthat the Church cannot escape theworld or simply pronouncejudgment on it.

Instead, the Church mustengage the world in a positiveway, he said. He encouraged thecouncil to use “the medicine ofmercy rather than of severity.”

disagree, he thought.In the end, he said that the

Church should “show herself tobe the loving mother of all,benign, patient, full of mercyand goodness” toward all.

Second Vatican Council engaged the world in a pro-active manner

Pope John XXIII signs the bull convoking the Second Vatican Council on Dec. 25,1961. The document said modern society was advancing with technological andscientific progress for which there was no corresponding advance in morality. Hewrote that he would convene the council so that the Church would contributepositively to the solution of modern problems. The council assembled for itsfirst session on Oct. 11, 1962.

The Second Vatican Council approved the following16 documents:• “Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy”

(“Sacrosanctum Concilium”)—One of the four majordocuments of the council, it ordered an extensiverevision of worship so people would have a clearersense of their involvement in the Mass and otherrites.

• “Decree on the Instruments of Social Communication”(“Inter Mirifica”)—This decree called on members ofthe Church, especially the laity, to instill “a human andChristian spirit” into newspapers, magazines, books,films, radio and television.

• “Dogmatic Constitution on the Church”(“Lumen Gentium”)—Another of the council’sfour principal texts, it presented the Church as amystery, as a communion of baptized believers, as thepeople of God, as the body of Christ and as a pilgrimmoving toward fulfillment in heaven, but marked onEarth with “a sanctity that is real, although imperfect.”

• “Decree on Ecumenism” (“Unitatis Redintegratio”)—This document said that ecumenism should beeveryone’s concern, and genuine ecumenism involvesa continual personal and institutional renewal.

• “Decree on Eastern Catholic Churches”(“Orientalium Ecclesiarum”)—This decree stated thatvariety within the Church does not harm its unity andthat Eastern Catholic Churches should retain theirtraditions.

• “Decree on the Bishops’ Pastoral Office in theChurch” (“Christus Dominus”)—In this document, the

council participants taught that each bishop has fullordinary power in his diocese, and is expected to presentChristian doctrine in ways adapted to the times. It urgedconferences of bishops to exercise pastoral directionjointly.

• “Decree on Priestly Formation” (“Optatam Totius”)—This decree recommended that seminaries pay attentionto the spiritual, intellectual and disciplinary formationnecessary to prepare priesthood students to become goodpastors.

• “Decree on the Appropriate Renewal of the ReligiousLife” (“Perfectae Caritatis”)—This document providedguidelines for personal and institutional renewal of theChurch’s religious orders and their individual members.

• “Declaration on the Relationship of the Church to Non-Christian Religions” (“Nostra Aetate”)—In thisdocument, the council participants taught that theCatholic Church rejects nothing that is true and holyin non-Christian religions, called for an end to anti-Semitism and said any discrimination based on race,color, religion or condition of life is foreign to the mindof Christ.

• “Declaration on Christian Education”(“Gravissimum Educationis”)—This document affirmedthe right of parents to choose the type of education thatthey want for their children, upheld the importance ofCatholic schools, and defended freedom of inquiry inCatholic colleges and universities.

• “Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation”(“Dei Verbum”)—The third of the council’s majordocuments, it said the Church depends on Scripture and

tradition as the two channels through which Godreveals himself, and commended the use of modernscientific scholarship in studying Scripture.

• “Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity”(“Apostolicam Actuositatem”)—This decree said thatthe laity should influence their surroundings withChrist’s teachings.

• “Declaration on Religious Freedom”(“Dignitatis Humanae”)—This document said thatreligious liberty is a right found in the dignity of eachperson and that no one should be forced to act in away contrary to his or her own beliefs.

• “Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests”(“Presbyterorum Ordinis”)—In this document, thecouncil participants taught that the primary duty ofpriests is to proclaim the Gospel to all, approved andencouraged celibacy as a gift and recommended fairsalaries.

• “Decree on the Church’s Missionary Activity”(“Ad Gentes”)—This decree said that missionaryactivity should help the social and economic welfareof people and not force anyone to accept the faith.

• “Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the ModernWorld” (“Gaudium et Spes”)—The last of thefour major documents of the council, it taught thatthe Church must talk to atheists, a continualcampaign must be waged for peace, nuclear war isunthinkable and aid to underdeveloped nations isurgent. It said that marriage was not just forprocreation, condemned abortion and urged scienceto find an acceptable means of birth regulation. †

This is the last in this series ofcolumns about the biblical readings in

the Office ofReadings becausenext week I plan tobegin a new series ofcolumns to coincidewith the beginning ofthe “Year of Faith”proclaimed byPope Benedict XVI.

The Office ofReadings includes six excerpts fromSt. Paul’s Letter to the Romans as thebiblical readings for some feasts—Easter, Pentecost, theImmaculate Conception, the SacredHeart, martyrs during Ordinary Time andholy men.

Paul’s Letter to the Romans is hismasterpiece of theology, which isone reason why it is placed first amongthe New Testament letters. It stresses theimportance of faith in Jesus Christwhich, he says, has been given by Godto both the Jews and the Gentiles.

Paul wrote this letter to introducehimself to the Christians in Rome. He

longed to go there and then be sent bythat community to present-day Spain.First, though, he had to make himselfknown to the Christians in Rome.

Therefore, he sent his associatesPriscilla—or Prisca—and Aquila aheadas sort of his advance team. Themarried couple were among Jews whohad been forced out of Rome by theEmperor Claudius 13 years earlier sothey were anxious to return home.

After he heard from Prisca andAquila the names of the leaders in theRoman community, he wrote this letter.It ends with greetings to 26 individuals,24 of them by name, that he learnedabout from Prisca and Aquila.

Five excerpts from St. Paul’s Letterto the Ephesians are included as biblicalreadings in the Office of Readings forcertain feasts.

As I type this column, I am enjoyinga piece of delicious fair-trade chocolate.

This morning,my wife, Cathy,and I enjoyed ourdaily ritual that isshared by a largemajority of peopleall over theworld—a cup ofhot coffee. Thisparticular cup—also a fair-trade

product—was brewed from beansgrown by small coffee farmers inSumatra, Indonesia.

How many of you know where yourcoffee or cocoa beans were grown andby whom? Do you know if the coffeeand cocoa farmers were paid a fair pricefor their beans or if the pickers of thebeans were treated fairly?

October is Fair Trade Month, a greatopportunity to raise awareness abouthow some of our buying decisions havea direct impact on our brothers andsisters all over the world. So just whatdoes fair trade mean?

I have cited the two most commonproducts that are often associated withthis term—coffee and chocolate. Didyou know that following oil, coffee isthe most traded commodity in theworld? In addition to coffee andchocolate, arts, crafts and clothing havebecome widely traded fair-tradeproducts.

Fair trade is a term which indicatesthat the owners of a farm or companyand their employees are paid a fair pricefor their products, that they follow fairlabor practices, and pay carefulattention to the impact of theirproduction on the environment.

Typically, fair-trade products comefrom small family farms or cooperativesthat normally cannot compete on pricewith the huge corporate giants thatdominate the markets of the world.

Most of us, when making any typeof purchase, know nothing about whatit took to bring that product to market.

I suggest that as Catholics seeking tolive out the social mission of Jesus thatit is important to know something abouthow the money that we spend impactsothers. We all impact the economy bythe decisions that we make, and theeconomy impacts every one of us.

Every once in a while, we read in thenews about some gross violation oflabor practices. For instance, a fewyears ago, we heard about a certainshoe manufacturer that was usingchildren in another country in theproduction of their shoes.

The intense desire to keep productssold in the United States priced as lowas possible and, oftentimes, just plaingreed cause companies to not only sendmanufacturing to other countries thatpay much lower wages than in the U.S.,but also often turn a blind eye to justhow deplorable the working conditionsmay be and how the workers are paidand treated.

Seeking out and buying productsthat are fair-trade certified from organizations that do their due-diligence to ensure fair labor practicesand proper attention to environmentalimpact is one important way that wecan help ensure the quality of life forstruggling farmers and artisans aroundthe world.

Brewing upgood reasons tosupport fair trade

Biblical readings: Romans, Ephesians and Actsprison, probably in Rome near the endof his life. There is doubt, though, thatthe letter was sent only to the Ephesians,despite its greeting, because it seems tooimpersonal. It might have been sent toseveral local Churches in Asia Minorwith the bearer of the letter designatingeach place in the greeting.

The letter is about the Church. Itssix chapters discuss the unity of theChurch in Christ, the Church’s worldmission and Christians’ daily conduct.

Finally, the Office of Readingsincludes excerpts from the Acts of theApostles on special feasts—those for theChair of Peter on Feb. 22, St. Lawrenceon Aug. 10, St. Luke on Oct. 18,St. Stephen on Dec. 26 and those of apope or bishop.

We should all be familiar withActs since it is the earliest history ofthe Church. Written by the sameauthor as the Gospel of St. Luke, itpicks up the story told in his Gospel. Itbegins with Christ’s ascension intoheaven, and continues until St. Paul’sfirst imprisonment in Rome—a period ofabout 35 years. †

Recently, a national pharmacyintroduced a new points card, and Ifeverishly read through the introductory

flyer, calculatingways that I couldrack up points andearn my first reward.

If I purchasedfeatured weekly saleitems and got myflu shot there, I wasalmost halfway to a$5 gift card.

Later that sameafternoon, I redeemed my fuel points atthe pump—from a separate grocery storepoints card—and saved 10 cents pergallon. I was on top of the world.

I suppose I have a foolish weaknessfor points, and everyone seems to begiving them away. Credit cardcompanies, airlines, hotels and retailersconstantly offer consumers ways toaccumulate points and revel in therewards.

I find much joy—possibly toomuch—in earning “free” merchandise,travel rewards, gift cards and discounts.Collecting points feels so productive andlucrative, especially on days when Iaccomplish little else.

Talk of points came up at church the

other day, and it caused me to think ofthem in a whole different way. A groupof volunteers walked out of church, andone woman in the group bemoaned thefact that she had to do some tedious—and basically thankless—work. It had tobe done, though, and if she didn’t do it,it wouldn’t get done. Then a wise personin the group piped up and saidsomething I won’t forget.

“Ah, yes, but consider the pointsyou’re earning in heaven,” she said.

She briefly explained that acts ofkindness and service for which there willbe no earthly payback do, in fact, earn uspoints in heaven.

My thoughts turned to a time when Ibent down to tie my elderly aunt’s shoefor her because it would have hurt herback to do it herself. She said, “Do youknow that you just got a point for that?”

At the time, I didn’t understand thatshe was referring to points in heaven.

So now when I must photocopychurch bulletin inserts, scrub crock potsafter the school’s chili cook-off or sewbuttons back onto my husband’s shirts, Itry to remember my wise friend Katie’sthree little words—points in heaven.

I hope you will say them to yourselfthe next time you shuttle the kids topractice, baby-sit for your neighbor’s

Earning those points for our eternal reward in heavenchild or decorate cookies for a bake sale.You are busy building the kingdom ofGod even if you’re doing it in a hairnetor sweatpants. Not all of God’s work ishigh-profile. It often goes unnoticed andunderappreciated, which can make usfeel unimportant.

But we should realize that points inheaven are the most important kind ofpoints there are. They buy us far morethan our credit card points ever could.

St. Paul told us that no mind hasconceived what God has prepared forthose who love him (1 Cor 2:9). Andeternal rewards never expire.

I am reminded of the Bible versefrom the Gospel of St. Mark, “But storeup treasures in heaven, where neithermoth nor decay destroys, nor thievesbreak in and steal. For where yourtreasure is, there also will your heart be”(Mt 6: 20-21).

God notices all the little things we dofor him and others. One day, he willthank us for being His hands and feethere on Earth. So we should do our bestto rack up those points in heaven. It willall be worth it.

It’s good to be reminded, or torealize for the first time, that caregiving

is pro-life.What seems so

obvious can beeasilyoverlooked,especially if youare a caregiver.So busy—attimes sooverwhelmed—with your

caregiving duties, you may tend to thinkthat you no longer can contribute tonormal duties. But you can also fail tonotice what you are doing.

You are the light of the world in amoment of darkness when it comes tothe value of life.

The world needs this “light”—theexample of love and selfless giving—that family caregivers offer to lovedones.

The growing darkness doesn’t solelyrefer to promoters of euthanasia andassisted suicide in our time. It alsorefers to the public’s increasingwillingness to accept that a human life

has little or no value if that person isn’tseen as a contributing or productivemember of society. Those who need careare viewed as burdens on taxpayers andfamilies. And some who need care startto see themselves that way, too.

In the words of the Gospel, familycaregivers are “the light of the world, acity set on a mountain” (Mt 5:14), andthe lamp placed on a stand where itgives light to all in the house, in thewords of St. Matthew.

Your compassion, dedication and hardwork are testimonies to the value ofhuman life.

You are in our prayers as you liveout your vocation of caring for yourloved one.

Caregivers exemplify what we writeabout in The Principles of CatholicCaregiving:

• Love and respect—Whether you arecaring for an aging parent or other olderfamily member, a spouse, a child withspecial needs or a friend, the bondbetween you and your loved one is likeno other. You probably realize that thisrelationship, though seldom ideal andnever perfect, remains a tremendously

Caring for the frail and sick is also part of being pro-lifeimportant part of your life. You are nowbeing given the opportunity and challengeto honor your mother and father, to loveyour spouse, or to care for your child orfriend in a new, different and moredemanding way.

• Caregiving is pro-life—The “cultureof life” includes providing care for aloved one who is sick, elderly, disabled orfrail. A cornerstone of respect for humanlife is compassionate care for the mostvulnerable among us at all stages of lifefrom the moment of conception untilnatural death.

• The spirituality ofcaregiving—Caring for a loved one is avocation, a calling from God. It is amission and a role that a caregiver acceptsin the name of love, and it is love itselfwhich accompanies both the caregiver andthe care-receiver on this journey.

The Book of Genesis is the source ofthe first reading for this weekend.

Among the first five books of theBible, Genesis revealsgreat facts. God is theCreator of all. Hegives life.

God createdhumanity in thegenders of male andfemale. God willedthat the two genderscomplement eachother and live with

each other. Marriage was, and is, the mostperfect union of a man and woman.

Unfortunately, the Scriptures at timesare accused of belittling women.Certainly, the Scriptures were alldeveloped with varying cultural contexts,and to an extent they were influenced bythese different cultures.

Both the Old Testament andNew Testaments are nothing less thanrevolutionary in their revelation that allhumans, regardless of gender, possessequal dignity because all are created byGod and infused with an eternal soul.

Throughout the history of salvation,from Genesis to the last moment recordedin the New Testament, paganism was afactor. Among pagans, women wereconsidered as little better than animals.

The dignity of women, equal to that ofmen, is the meaning of the story that Evewas created from Adam’s rib.

This reading also is a powerfultestament—indeed from very ancienttimes—to the historic Jewish andChristian concept of marriage.

It is a union, created by God, and nevershould it be defiled by exploitation,selfishness or insincerity. It is the unionthat blesses procreation and places itwithin the divine plan.

For its second reading, the Church thisweekend offers us a passage fromSt. Paul’s Epistle to the Hebrews.

According to the reading, each person iscreated only “a little lower than the angels,”although this condition will change.

Humans who love God, and arefaithful to God, one day will rejoice in thepresence of God, just as the angels rejoice

in heaven.The key is Jesus. Jesus loves all people

as brothers and sisters. Those who areloyal to God respond to this great love.

St. Mark’s Gospel provides thethird reading.

It is a familiar passage. The questioncenters upon the legality before God ofdivorce itself, not the grounds for divorce.

Often, it is assumed that this questionput to Jesus opened an entirely newdebate and that in replying Jesus set asidethe Law of Moses.

Actually, the debate was vigorouslyunderway even among those personslearned in the Mosaic tradition.

Jesus appeared in the role of thedivinely constituted and divinelyempowered representative of Godthe Father.

He put the question in its propercontext. Marriage is God’s creation,created for a man and woman to unitewith each other ultimately in serving God.

In the same passage, although onanother occasion, Jesus blesses thechildren.

God is the author of life. The comingof each new generation continues thedignity of humanity, and the coming ofeach new generation proclaims themajesty and love of God.

ReflectionFundamentally, these readings call us

to divinely revealed truths that are sooften and so outrageously ignored inthe world.

God, the Creator, is supreme. No onecan follow a standard opposite God’s will.

Since each human being is God’sprecious child, God’s pricelessmasterpiece of creation, no one and nosociety has the right to demean orcompromise this dignity.

It especially is a powerful thought inthe face of legalized abortion on demandand the movement to allow euthanasia.

Secondly, marriage comes from God.Children are indispensable in anyconcept of marriage drawn fromChristian Tradition.

The increasingly accepted optionof divorce has clouded popular viewsof marriage. Years of accepting contraception has dulled for us the sensethat children are God’s gift and comefrom God.

We are called to see life, marriage andprocreation in the light of God’s will. †

QI’ve heard that the Vatican does notapprove of the lighting of the unity

candle at weddingceremonies. Is thistrue? (Albany, N.Y.)

AFor thoseunfamiliar with

this practice, the ritualof the unity candle issometimes insertedinto a Catholicwedding ceremony

following the exchange of vows and rings.The bride and groom each take a

smaller lighted candle. Using thosecandles, they together light the largercandle in the middle. That is referred to asthe “unity candle.”

The bride and groom then blow out thesmaller candles, showing in a symbolicway that their two lives are now blendedinto one.

As an added tweak, sometimes themothers of the bride and groom will lightthe two smaller candles at the beginningof the wedding ceremony.

The lighting of a unity candle is not apart of the official Catholic weddingceremony—i.e., it is not included in theVatican-approved rite of marriage.

However, I am not aware of any Vaticanprohibition of this “add-on,” and mostparishes allow it if the couple wants tolight a candle.

Some parishes, though, do not permit itbecause they view it as a secular incursioninto a sacred ceremony.

The origins of the unity candle ritualare unclear, but it seems to have developedin America over the past 30 to 40 years.

One theory is that the practice took offafter it was done in a wedding on the TVsoap opera “General Hospital” in 1981.

Parishes that disallow a unity candleargue that it takes the focus away from thecentral ritual, which is the exchange ofvows, and they advise couples who wantto use the unity candle to do so at thewedding reception rather than duringthe ceremony.

My approach is not to suggest the unitycandle to couples, but to accede to theirwishes if they should raise the issue.

I have the couple place the candles on asmaller table rather than on the altar so asto keep the altar table only for theEucharist.

I take the same approach with coupleswho raise the possibility of bringing afloral bouquet to a Marian side altar afterthey exchange their vows and rings in

honor of the Blessed Mother.In general, I think the Church fares

best when we can grant a couple’s wisheson their special day.

Sometimes, though, a line needs to bedrawn.

I had one couple who thought it wouldbe “neat” if their dog could carry thewedding rings up the aisle in the bridalprocession.

I said I thought that might be inappropriate and that I would not becomfortable with it, which was my way ofsaying that I wouldn’t allow it in a millionyears. They caught my drift.

QI have a question about the behaviorof children at Mass.

In my old parish, the priest would stopMass and have the ushers assist a motherwith a crying baby to a separate—andsoundproof—“cry room,” which I thoughtwas a good practice.

But at my new parish, toddlers—not somuch crying infants—are forever makingnoise and causing disruptions, andnothing seems to happen.

Our priest is young and new to theparish, and I think he doesn’t want to rockthe boat.

Couldn’t there be a particular area ofthe church set apart for parents withchildren? (Iowa)

AI think that a having a “cry room” isa good idea, both for crying babies

and disruptive toddlers.In our parish, the entire gathering area

serves such a purpose, with a speakersystem and large glass doors offering afull view of the interior of the church.

I would be leery though of stoppingMass and asking ushers to escort a noisyfamily to the cry room. Most parents, Ithink, would be grandly embarrassed atbeing singled out this way and mightnever come back to church.

In an ideal world, all parents wouldexercise infallible discretion as to when totake their child out during Mass, butnothing human is perfect.

An occasional notice in the parishbulletin can help with a simple reminderthat a moderate amount of sound andmovement are to be expected from smallchildren, but if people nearby aredistracted from worshiping attentivelythen the “cry room” is available.

The 2012 election brings an opportunityfor Catholics to shape public policy.

“The Catholic Church does not andcannot tell voters which candidates or

political party inwhich to vote,” saidGlenn Tebbe,Indiana CatholicConference (ICC)executive director.“Rather, the Churchencourages peopleto form theirconsciences onbasic Church moralteachings, fulfilltheir moral duty and

exercise their right to vote.“The Indiana superintendent of public

instruction, in cooperation with thegovernor and state lawmakers, driveeducation policy,” Tebbe said. “Educationhas a far-reaching impact on families andchildren and society as a whole and,because of that, it is an important issuefor the Church to address.”

Superintendent of Public InstructionTony Bennett shares his responses toquestions posed by the ICC on educationissues and policy.

Q. What role does the Departmentof Education (DOE) have in ensuringthat quality educational opportunitiesare available in urban and rural areas?

A. “I believe we must elevate theacademic achievement and careerpreparation of all Indiana students to be thebest in the United States and on par withthe most competitive countries inthe world.

“Through the hard work of Hoosierstudents and educators, we have foundsuccess—and I’m pleased to report that byevery measure, our students are achievingmore today than they were four years ago.

“Almost 86 percent of Indiana studentsgraduated high school in 2011—the highestmark in Indiana’s history. Student testscores have improved by more than8 percentage points, and Indiana issecond in the nation for studentperformance gains on advancedplacement exams.

“We must continue to ensure that morequality educational opportunities areavailable to students in every area ofthe state.”

Q. How do the Catholic and othernon-public schools contribute to thecommon good and public instruction?

A. “As an alumnus of [Our Lady of]Providence High School [in Clarksville],Catholic education has had a profoundimpact on my life.

“This experience is a daily reminderfor me that both non-public schools and

Catholic schools are integral to the futuresuccess of Indiana.

“We are especially indebted to themultitude of great educators that servein Catholic and non-public schools.There’s nothing more critical thanensuring every Indiana classroom has agreat teacher.

“Your system of schools serves studentswell by sharing this focus and priority.”

Q. How should the State of Indianaprotect and promote the right ofparents to choose the most appropriateeducational opportunity best suited tothe needs of their children?

A. “One of the best ways to engageparents in education is through schoolchoice. I want every parent to know thatwe’re committed to providing families[with] as many high quality schooloptions as possible. We don’t need moreof a certain type of schools—we needmore good schools, period.

“As Indiana’s superintendent ofpublic instruction, I’m committed topromoting and protecting the right ofparents to choose the school that bestmeets their child’s needs.”

Q. What is the proper relationshipbetween the superintendent orDepartment of Education and non-public schools?

A. “I believe it’s my job to make surethat we have the best education system in

the United States for the public ofIndiana.

“My definition of public is all1.2 million Hoosier children. It is notlimited exclusively to public schools. Itis every child in the State of Indiana whoreceives an education.

“With that in mind, I do believe thatdecisions are best made at the locallevel. It is the state’s job to set highexpectations, provide a menu of bestpractices, explain the consequences forsuccess and failure, and then get out ofthe way so local schools and educatorscan get the job done.”

An archdiocesan Advent pilgrimage toCincinnati and northern Kentucky onDec. 12 will give pilgrims an opportunity toview some of the Dead Sea Scrolls,priceless relics from the Holy Land thathave been described as “the most significantarchaeological find of the last century.”

Bishop Christopher J. Coyne,apostolic administrator, will lead the one-day pilgrimage on the feast of Our Lady

of Guadalupe.The pilgrimage

will feature a visitto the CincinnatiMuseum Center toview the “Dead SeaScrolls—Life andFaith in AncientTimes” exhibit.

More than600 items ondisplay in the“once-in-a-lifetimeexhibit” include the

oldest known copies of the Hebrew Bible aswell as iconic objects from daily life,artifacts from the City of David and a 3-ton stone from the Western Wall inJerusalem.

“I am looking forward to visitingCincinnati and spending the day withsome good folks from the archdiocese,”Bishop Coyne said of the pilgrimage.“It should be both informative and fun.”

The exhibit opens on Nov. 16 andcontinues through April 14, 2013.

In 1947, a shepherd found a hidden cavealong the shore of the Dead Sea thendiscovered ancient scrolls inside it that hadnot been seen in more than 2,000 years.
