Mary, the Model Missionary

“In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill

country, to a city of Judah and she entered the house of

Zachariah and greeted Elizabeth (Lk. 1:39-40).

Mary, our beloved mother, is the first one to hear the gospel;

she is the first one to receive the gospel; she is the first one to

proclaim the gospel to others.

The gospel is that Jesus Christ, Son of God is born in

Bethlehem as the SAVIOUR of humankind. As soon as Mary

conceived Jesus in her womb, she is filled with the joy of the

gospel. She went with haste not only by the movement of her

feet but above all by the movement of her mind and heart to

share the joy of the gospel with Elizabeth, her cousin. The

presence of Jesus is a presence of peace and joy. The babe in

Mission: Evangelization: That young people, especially

in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to

the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to

the world.

the womb of Elizabeth leaped for joy as soon as she heard the

greeting of Mary.

The gospel of great joy is announced to the shepherds. They

went with haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph,

and the babe lying in a manger. They spoke to others about the

child. They glorified and praised God for all they had heard

and seen (cf. Lk. 2:10-20). The shepherds heard the gospel;

they saw the gospel and they proclaimed the gospel.

The pilgrim church is missionary by her very nature (AG.2).

The Church exists in order to evangelize. Evangelization is the

vocation proper to the church (cf. E.N.14). Our Christian

vocation is essentially a missionary vocation. For us nothing is

more essential, more important, more urgent than the most

important work of evangelization. We are called to proclaim the

gospel both by word and deed, by preaching and by the witness

our exemplary Christian life.

Mary is the Mother of the Church; she is the model and guide

for the mission of the church. She is the “Star of

Evangelization”. Mary went with haste to share the joy of

the gospel with Elizabeth. Do we have the same sense of

haste, of eagerness, of willingness and of readiness to share

the joy of the gospel with the people around us? Do we take

time and make efforts for the proclamation of the gospel? Let us

always keep in mind that the most sacred work of evangelization

is the most important thing in our lives. With Mary and like

Mary, our dearest mother, let us carry the Lord Jesus

to the hearts of the people and bring the people to the

feet of Christ.

1. Mass Offerings

With effect from 01-01-2019, the offerings for Holy Mass

will be:-

Rs.5,000/- for a set of Gregorian Masses

Rs.1,350/- for Novena Masses.

2. CCBI General Body Meeting

The General Body Meeting of the Conference of the

Catholic Bishops of India will be held from 8th to 14 January

2019 at Joe Beach Animation Centre, Mahabalipuram. The

theme is: “The Joy of the Gospel”. Let us all pray for the

success of this meeting.

3. Christian Unitive Octave

From 18th to 25th January 2019, we celebrate the

Christian Unitive octave. During these days let us pray in a

special way for unity among all the Christians that all Christians

may bear a common witness to their common faith.

4. Anbiyam

Month of January is celebrated as Anbiyam month in

Tamilnadu and Pondicherry. Parish Priests are greatly exhorted

to promote Anbiyams in their parishes. Anbiyam should be the

way of living our Christian faith.

5. Accounts

Keeping accurate and update account is a serious

duty and responsibility of the Parish Priests and the heads of

the educational institutions (cf. Can. 1284). All the Parish Priests

and the heads of the institutions are reminded of this serious

duty and responsibility and asked to submit the accounts of the

financial year 2018-2019 to the Procurator on or before 30th

April 2019. Accounts are to be submitted to the Procurator

and all the accounts will be audited only by our diocesan

auditors.

6. Annual Statistical Questionnaire

The Parish Priests, Heads of Institutions and

Congregations are earnestly requested to send back the duly

filled-in statistical Questionnaire, List of Baptisms and Marriages

before 31st January 2019 to Fr. Secretary.

7. Summer Ministry

Those who wish to have the service of our seminarians

during the summer are kindly requested to contact Fr. Secretary

before the end of January 2019.

8. Thank you

and Rev. Sisters for their greetings to me for Christmas and New

Year.

II.Points to Ponder: Quotes of Pope Francis…

• Saints are not “Supermen” who are “born perfect” but ratherare ordinary people who followed God with all their Heart.

• To really get married… it is not enough to celebratemarriage! We need to make a journey from the “I” to the“We” and think and live for each other.

• Every Christian vocation, including the priesthood andconsecrated virginity, are deeply spousal. Life- giving andself-sacrificing.

• In the priesthood we love the people of God with all thepaternity, tenderness and strength of a spouse and a father.

• Communion, service and mercy foster Eucharistic culture.

III.Youth Friendly Family with Fidelity: Fidelity in family isunderstood as being true to each other (husband-wife), to friends, tosons and daughters, and above all to God. Without fidelity to Godthere is serious danger of infidelity in marriage. When people arefaithful to God, to themselves, to friends, to children, the problem ofinfidelity diminishes.

The single life of a young son/daughter until marriage is also aGod-given vocation, so too the life of widows and widowers in thefamily. A mix of all these states of life makes the family inclusively ahappy one, though none are free from problems, suffering, worry andpain. Genuine mutual love and suffering are inseparable companionsin family life. As in all vocations, growing and maturing in the familywithin its natural setting is the deepest need. And all members have towork at the maturing. All will have to learn to love; i.e, living for the‘other’ rather than for the self. Husband has to learn the needs of thespouse, both physical and psychological (the needs of children, too).The greatest need is to be recognized as a person, loved andrespected; to be told that she or he is loved.

The young and old will have to learn how to talk together asequals, to discuss problems. Each has to learn to listen; recognizeone’s faults and failures and work at overcoming them. In a word, allneed to communicate as growing youth and mature adult, those notyet married, need to prepare themselves spiritually, physically, andfinancially as well. They will have to keep up their lives’ goal andaspire to achieve it in the light of a true Christian spirit.

Commissions and ReportsSt. Xavier’s Pastoral Centre

Madha T.V.: Madha T.V. has organized a Christmas get togetherfor all the Secretaries their co-operators and Madha T.V. Staff on10th December 2018. Five of us participated in that and took part inthe shooting of Madha T.V. mass for the Holy Family. And we haveproduced a carols programme, for the Madha T.V. with the choirsof from Mugaiyur, Thattanchavady, Neyveli Township and the choirof the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Idaya Collegecommunity of the Immaculate Sisters co-operated nicely andgenerously in preparation of the stage and met out the other expensestoo. And Rev. Fr. R. Jayantha Rayan and his team and the LourduT.V. shooting team did the co-ordination, recording and editing.This year the programme came out well. And the programme wastelecasted on 25th at 09.30 a.m. and retelecasted at 10.00 A.M. on30th December 2018. I thank very much the Sisters, Fathers and thetechnicians involved in the production of this programme. Also Ithank the Parish Priests who prepared and sent the choir at theirexpenses to the recording venue and also I thank and appreciatethe choir members and instruments players for their wonderfulperformance and their sacrifice of time and energy. May God blessyou throughout this year.

Catechists' Meet: The Trained Catechists came together on 13th

December for X-Mas preparation. I have given them an elaboratedescription about the Synod 2019 of Pondicherry in reference tothe first one held in 1844. The Catechists were very happy to knowour history and were really proud to be Catechists who came intoexistence for the evangelization because of the decision of the 1st

Synod. They promised to co-operate generously in the preparatoryworks of the synod.

Anbiyam: On 29th December in our centre we have conductedone day preparatory seminar for the chief coordinators of Anbiyamof the parishes for the celebration of the Anbiyam month in January

Already during our Priests Christmas get togather, I gave acircular in which I mentioned some of the topics for your immediateattention. i.e. Anbiyam, Synod and Christivur Vazhurimai Iyakkm.And along with the Anbiyam Liturgical Celebrations materials, Ihave sent a personal circular to all the Parish Priests in which I toomentioned the importance of the interest and involvement of theParish Priests for the animation of the Christ’s faithful.

So Dear Fathers, kindly celebrate Anbiyam month, Kindly conducta meeting of the Anbiyam co-ordinators and encourage them tocelebrate this month and ask your chief co-ordinator to send me asmall report. We have given one Topic for each Sunday of January.The details are given in the small booklet and a very elaborateexplanations are given in our monthly “Thozhan” from TNBCLC.

Commissions’ Secretaries: Happy New year Dear LovingSecretaries of the Commissions. December, I have sent you a circularand a model questionnaire regarding the Synodal preparation andasked you to prepare a questionnaire on the prescribed topic, to besent to the different sections of the people of God to facilitate themto express their opinions. Some of you have already sent, and thosewho have not done so far, please send it immediately to me. Thismonth Our Archbishop is going to have an inaugural ceremonydeclaring the decree of the convocation of the Synod. So, please actfast and send the questionnaires to me.

Synod: Our Archbishop gave a short but precise history regardingthe First Synod (1884) and 1st (Nov. 1992) and 2nd (Nov. 2014) live-in programmes during our Priests’ recollection in December on 12th

2018 and gave the final list of the Topics that we are going to discussduring the 3rd Synod of Pondicherry 2019. For your kindremembrance, these are the Topics.

Action Plan:1. The Secretaries of the concerned Commissions in charge

prepare the questionnaire, the purpose of which is to bring forthfrom the people their concerns in each field.

2. Inaugural celebration and declaring the decree of Convocationof the 3rd Synod of Pondy 2019.

3. Core Group and Steering Committee of the Synod are tofinalise the questionnaire to be sent to the parishes.

4. At the parish level, form a Synodal Committee to distributethe questionnaire to all the organizations of the parish and collectand co-ordinate the answers and make a report to the vicariatecentre.

5. VF’s should form a vicariate synodal team consisting of Priests,Religious and the Laity to collect the parish Synodal reports and co-ordinate and give a vicariate report to the Secretariat.

6. Selection of the experts who will deal with the each group oftopics and give us a presentation of these topics in writing, makinguse of the data from the reports, teachings and traditions of thechurch basing everything on the scriptures.

7. Archbishop, with the knowledge of Senate and College ofConsultors, will instruct the Core Group and the Steering Committeeto decide the Synodal members, the dates, number of days, numberof sections, venue of the Synod and other programmes andprocedures of presentation and different committees to be formedto conduct the Synod.

So Dear Fathers, all these will be informed to you continually indue course of time. Please act and respond in time as we plan out.2019 is very important for our diocese. Let us involve totally andmake our Diocese to be always a pioneer and model to the Churchof Tamilnadu, India and the world at large.

Senate: Dear Fathers, we conduct 3 meetings of the Senate ina year that is one in 4 months. So the first meeting will be heldsometime from January – April. Usually we conduct at the end ofFebruary. So please when you have vicariate meeting this month ornext month please collect the suggestions from the vicariate Fathers.

The last Senate was conducted on 25th November 2018. I ampreparing the report. Soon it will be in your hands.

Commission for Evangelization: Last month we had a veryfruitful third Sunday monthly prayer meeting in preparation of thebirth of Jesus. I thank St. Xavier’s Pastoral Centre prayer preparatoryteam who always involve very much to arrange for this monthlyprogramme. They always see to all the expenses by contributingthemselves and collecting donations etc. This month Rev. Fr.Irudayaraj, Director, Amalashram, Trichy will animate this monthlymeeting. Kindly announce to the people about this, so that manywill come and enrich their spiritual life which in turn will bear muchfruit in your parishes. They have to pay for nothing to here. Everythingis free.

Chrithuvar Vazhvurimai Iyakkam: It was planned in Maduraimeeting in October that we have to form a team for each M.P.constituency for the forth coming parliamentary election. This teamwill bring to the people our political stand and options. In our diocesewe have four constituencies i.e. Pondicherry, Cuddalore, Villupuramand Kallakurichy. On 12th January we have meeting of Chirthuvar

Vazhvurimai Iyakkam in Trichy to finlise the teams. If you have anysuggestions please let me know, because this is an urgent need ofthe hour. If you want to opt to be the animator of any constituency,please come forward we will work together.

Demonstration with Dalit Drums, Folk songs and music was heldon 4 th December 2018 at Jantar Mantar, Delhi, demandingScheduled Caste right to Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims,organised by Dalit Christian Artists Coordination Committee. AdavuCultural team from Tamilnadu performed the Dalit Drum ‘Parai’.“If you don’t listen to our voices at least listen to our Drums” saidMost Rev. Theodore Mascarenhas the Secretary General of CatholicBishops’ Conference of India. Many Political and Religious leadersshowed their support for the demand of Christian and Muslimcommunities. Fr. Jervis the Deputy Secretary General said that theGovernment should protect the Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims,provide them the legal protection and promote their developmentby extending their due Scheduled Caste rights. Mr. Ali Anwar theformer member of the Parliament said “It is a sad situation of thecountry that the successive Governments do not give the rightfuldemand of the SC status to Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims”.Ms. Annie Raja, General Secretary of National Federation of IndianWomen said “Parai the Dalit drum should be the instrument todemand out rights and we will uphold our Dalit drums to demandout rights”. ‘Nine is Mine’ a Child right group’s children alsoperformed their drums.Demands to the Central Government:

2.Tribute to Dr. Ambedkar

The office bearers of our Archdiocesan SC/ ST commissionpayed respect to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on 6th December 2018in Ambedkar memorial, Pondicherry and affirmed hiscontribution and committed to follow his steps for theliberation to the downtrodden and marginalized.

3.Honoring the toppers of Class X & XII girls from

the Dalit and the Tribal Catholic Girls

The CBCI Council for Women together with the CBCI Offices

for SC/BC and Tribal Affairs honored the toppers of Class X & XII

girls from the Dalit and the Tribal Catholic Communities of the

economically weaker sections in society. This has been hailed as a

very novel and unique attempt ever made by the Council for Women

to encourage and to reach out to the less fortunate girl children.

This will bring to the limelight and enable those who have been

blessed with intellectual acumen to reach the higher spectrums of

life. The selections were made on the basis of their outstanding

performance in studies in spite of their financial, cultural and

geographical difficulties.

This award has been granted to the National as well as State

level toppers in the Board Exams – 2018.

All those who obtained above 75% marks were awarded

complimentary prizes. The Awardees’ names were announced on

5th December, 2018 at the Regional Bishops’ Council meeting of

Andhra-Telengana in Hyderabad. The National Toppers of the Dalit

Community for Class X & XII, hailed from Nellore Diocese, and the

State Toppers of Telengana were honored in the auspicious presence

Scheduled Castes/Backward Classes to promote the welfare of the

marginalized people. The Award is given for the best reports on

people of Scheduled Caste/Backward Class origin.

for the ICPA 2019 awards to be conferred on the most deserving

Christian journalists during the Convention of Christian Journalists

publication/institution engaged in journalism and mass

communications. No self-nomination will be entertained. All

1) A recommendation letter from a person of repute in the field for

the proposed candidate.

2) Resume of the candidate and five latest published news stories

by the candidate.

3) In the case of a periodical, a brief note on its achievements to

deserve the award

4) Two passport-size photos of the nominated candidate. In case of

regional languages, headlines/titles should be in English.

5) Contact details of the nominee must be sent in the covering letter

only and NOT on the published copies.

YOUTH COMMISSION REPORT

Activities:1. State Level Youth Directors Meet:

Youth Directors meeting was held on 7th December 2018 inBishop’s House, Nagarkovil. Most Rev.Nazareene Soosai,the Chairman Bishop addressed the gathering. Fr.Backianathan the former Regional youth director shared hispast experience in youth ministry. We have discussed aboutthe Annual plan in different levels for the year 2019 in orderto make the circumstances for our youth so that they canform themselves to be the agents of Social Transformation.



2. Christmas Carols Competition:In collaboration with Lourdes TV Our Youth commission

has organized Inter Parish Christmas Carols Competition on 9th

December 2018 in Amalorpavam Hr. Sec. School, Pondicherry.There were 14 parishes participated. Thanks to all parish priestswho encouraged the parish choir and parish youth to participatein the competitions.

3. State level leadership training for youth leadersState level leadership training for youth leaders was held on

27th and 28th of December 2018 at Trichy. It was organized byTamil Nadu youth commission, totally 40 youth leaders from differentdioceses were participated. Four youth leaders attended the trainingfrom our Archdiocese.
