Bahrain marks 91st National Day of Saudi TDT | Manama

Bahrain yesterday joined the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in

celebrating its 91st National Day anniversary, which this year had the slogan “A Home for Us” or “Heya Lana Dar”.

Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, HM King’s advisor for Diplomatic Affairs, conveyed congratula-tions of His Majesty King Ham-ad bin Isa Al Khalifa to the Cus-todian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Saudi Crown Prince, Dep-uty Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, HRH Prince Moham-med bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the royal family and the Saudi people on the kingdom’s 91st National Day anniversary.

He was visiting Saudi Ambas-sador to Bahrain, HRH Prince Sultan bin Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Shaikh Khalid expressed his pride in the fraternal ties bond-ing the two Kingdoms and their perpetual growth.

Shaikh Khalid also stressed the tremendous developments and achievements made by Sau-di Arabia and its role in consoli-dating the security and stability of the region.

This year’s theme reflects the deep Saudi traditions to wel-come people from diverse back-grounds and make Saudi Arabia feel like home to them.

The day celebrated annually on 23 September marks the re-naming of the Kingdom of Nejd and Hejaz to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932 following a Royal Decree by King Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud.

The celebrations this year in Saudi, news reports said, will be a muted affair amid the pan-demic.

Saudi Arabia celebrated its first National Day in 2005. This year, the national airline, Sau-dia, repainted some of the aer-oplanes in its fleet to mark the 91st annual National Day.

Fireworks also lit up the skies across Al Hail, Abha, Tabouk, Buraidah, Jeddah, Najran, Dam-mam, Al Diriya and Al Madinah at 9 pm local time.

The highlight of the cele-brations was the dazzling per-formance of Saudi Arabian air force members known as Saudi Hawks, which also kicked off the

kingdom’s biggest airshow. The Saudi MBC group is to

broadcast 14 hours of special coverage from various locations across the kingdom, including a

one-hour operetta sung by Saudi performers on the day.

On the celebrations, Bahrain Television Director, Qais Has-san Al-Dossari, said they had adopted a slogan including the flags of the two kingdoms, un-der the theme “Our Hearts Beat Together”.

The celebrations of the Saudi National Day by Bahrain TV in-cluded mainly three 90-minute live broadcasts.

The coverage includes news reports, interviews and talk shows presented by anchors wearing shawls decorated with the Saudi flag.

Bahrain Radio Director, Yunes

Salman, said that Bahrain Radio, Radio Riyadh and other GCC ra-dio stations are relaying broad-casts with MBC Radio.

The Director- General of Schools Affairs, Dr Muhammad Mubarak bin Ahmed, and the Undersecretary for Policies, Strategies and Performance, Nawal Ibrahim Al-Khater, took part in a celebration at the Saudi educational mission from the Centre for Educational Super-vision in the Education Affairs Sector.

Bahrain International Airport Company celebrated the occa-sion by greeting Saudi passen-gers with gifts.

Justice and Islamic affairs ministry announces Umrah permit procedures • Tawakkalna and Etamarna apps are the only official portals to issue permits

• Foreign pilgrims will have to visit a health centre if their health status has not been entered into Tawakkalna

• Both the Umrah visa and e-visa are valid for 2 weeks.

• At the Grand Mosque, authorities will check the permit’s date and validity

TDT | Manama

The Ministry of Justice, Is-lamic Affairs and Endow-ments has announced the

procedure for Umrah (minor Hajj) and prayer permits in the Great Mosque of Makkah and visiting the Prophet’s Mosque.

The procedures are as per the directives issued by the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Hajj and Um-

rah.The ministry called on li-

censed Umrah operators and all citizens and residents to en-sure registration on Muqeem App and use Tawakkalna and Eatmarna apps to show their health status (vaccinated) ahead of receiving the Umrah permits.

Opening an account on Eat-marna is possible only after updating the visitor’s immune health status on the Tawakkalna application.

Vaccination a must for Visa

“Only those who had taken two doses of coronavirus vaccine or completed 14 days after taking the first dose of the vaccine or recovered after infection are en-titled to obtain an Umrah visa,” the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah said.

Saudi Ministry had stated that they would only allow pil-grims who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 or have recov-ered from the infection. Umrah visas will only be issued to fully vaccinated individuals.

Saudi Health authorities have

approved vaccines for all above 12 years of age.

Reports say, foreign pilgrims must be vaccinated fully against COVID-19 with Pfizer/BioNTech: Comirnaty, Oxford/AstraZene-ca: Vaxzevria, Johnson & John-son: Ad26.COV2.S or Moderna: mRNA-1273

Pilgrims vaccinated with Sin-opharm: BBIBP-CorV and Sino-vac: CoronaVac will also be al-lowed entry, provided they have taken a booster shot of either Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson.

Saudi also requires pilgrims to be in excellent health condi-tions and adhere to protocols for ensuring the safety of pilgrims coming from abroad.

SR1,000 fine Entering masjids without

a permit will attract a fine of SR1,000.

Authorities also will not al-low unauthorised vehicles in the central region around Makkah.

Worshippers are also required to arrive on time to avoid losing their time slots.

The instructions coincide with the safe Umrah season for 1443 AH for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) citizens.

10 million pilgrims

According to the Saudi Min-istry of Hajj and Umrah, 10 mil-

lion pilgrims have successfully performed Umrah since Oct. 4, 2020, following the launch of its “safe Umrah” procedures and the gradual return of pilgrims to the Two Holy Mosques.

The ministry also revealed issuing more than 12,000 visas since the Kingdom began to wel-come pilgrims from other coun-tries on Aug. 10 this year.

Officials aim to reach a capaci-ty of 3.5 million pilgrims, visitors and worshippers a month.

Abdulfattah Mashat, the dep-uty minister of Hajj and Umrah, said the capacity is 70,000 pil-grims a day currently.

International visitors should register their vaccination status on an online platform 72 hours before travelling to the King-dom.

The Hajj is compulsory for all able-bodied Muslims with financial means during the Hajj season. On

the other hand, Umrah is voluntary and allowed at any time of the year, outside the Hajj season. However,

both the major and minor journeys revolve around the Kaabah located

at the centre of the Masjid al-Haram.

Nespresso’s Ispirazione Italiana adds two new limited-edition coffeesTDT | Manama

Two new limited-edition coffees have been added to

Nespresso’s Ispirazione Italiana collection for the Original sys-tem, inspired by the craftsman-ship of Italian master roasters and the flavours they so deftly construct.

Coffee roasting styles have varied over the years, just as new aesthetic groups have emerged and grown. Despite the coun-try’s rich coffee tradition, Italy’s speciality coffee market is thriv-ing. With Ispirazione Novecen-to and Ispirazione Millennio,

Nespresso has captured the fla-vours and fragrances of both the traditional and modern, each one a true masterpiece of Italian roasting history.

Take a trip back in time with

Ispirazione Novecento

Newly released Limited Edi-tion the classic Italian espressos of the 1940s inspired Ispirazione Novecento. It’s a dark, smokey cup that recalls the country’s

early stand-up coffee shops, when roasting was slower and often wood-fired, and blends were influenced by the beans available in wartime Europe. Ispirazione Novecento is a Bra-zilian espresso that is enhanced with heirloom Arabicas and West African Robustas to pro-vide a deep, dark crema with raw spicy, nutty brown charac-teristics.

Step into the modern with Ispirazione Millennio

Meanwhile, Nespresso’s Limited Edition Ispirazione Millennio derives its aromatic

Huawei Rotating Chairman reaffirms continuous innovationTDT | Manama

Huawei’s annual flagship event for the global ICT in-

dustry – HUAWEI CONNECT 2021 – kicked off yesterday. Huawei Rotating Chairman Eric Xu opened the event with a keynote speech titled “Innovating Non-stop for Faster Digitalization”.

This year’s event, themed “Dive into Digital”, explores how digital technology can bet-ter integrate with business sce-narios and industry know-how to address critical business chal-lenges, and how stakeholders can work together more effec-tively to foster an open indus-try ecosystem and drive shared success.

In his keynote, Xu spoke about how helping industries go digital is a critical aspect of Huawei’s mission to bring dig-ital to every person, home and organization for a fully connect-ed, intelligent world. He said, “Digital development relies on digital technology. For digital technology to stay relevant, we must continue to innovate and create value. Cloud, AI, and net-works are three critical digital technologies.”

At the event, Xu launched

the industry’s first distribut-ed, cloud-native service called UCS – a ubiquitous cloud-native service available on HUAWEI CLOUD. With UCS, Huawei plans to provide enterprises with a consistent experience while us-ing cloud-native applications that are not constrained by geo-graphical, cross-cloud, or traffic limitations, thereby accelerating digital transformation in all in-dustries.

HUAWEI CLOUD also an-nounced two new regions, and ten new services including MacroVerse aPaaS, OptVerse AI Solver, HUAWEI CLOUD Stack 8.1, Pangu drug molecule mod-el, and SparkRTC. It was also revealed that the first virtual human, Yunsheng, is set to join HUAWEI CLOUD.

Xu added that HUAWEI CLOUD, the company’s cloud

service that was launched just four years ago, has already brought together more than 2.3 million developers, 14,000 consulting partners, and 6,000 technology partners, and also made more than 4,500 services available in the HUAWEI CLOUD Marketplace. It has become an important platform for In-ternet companies, enterprises, and governments alike to take their organizations digital. As of September 2021, HUAWEI CLOUD and partners operate 61 Availability Zones (AZs) in 27 geographic regions worldwide, covering more than 170 coun-tries and regions.

Zhang Ping’an, CEO of HUA-WEI CLOUD and President of Huawei Consumer Cloud Ser-vice, commented: “The key to successful digital transforma-tion is to think cloud native

and act cloud native. HUAWEI CLOUD joins our customers and partners to dive into digi-tal and explore the potential of Everything as a Service – Infra-structure as a Service for global accessibility, Technology as a Service for flexible innovation, and Expertise as a Service for shared excellence.”

Huawei’s full-stack, all-sce-nario AI portfolio released back in 2018 is also progressing as expected. Its MindSpore frame-work has become the main-stream AI computing framework in China. Meanwhile, the Atlas 900 cluster, as well as the cloud services based on it, currently serve more than 300 enterpris-es, supporting the training of many models, which include the HUAWEI CLOUD Pangu large models. HUAWEI CLOUD Mod-elArts has made AI application development incredibly simple with its full-pipeline, scenar-io-based services. The end goal of ModelArts is to enable each and every engineer to inde-pendently develop their own AI applications. Huawei hosts HUA-WEI CONNECT 2021 online from September 23 to October 31. The theme of this year’s event is Dive into Digital.

US House backs bill to provide $1 billion for Israel Iron Dome• The measure passed by 420 to 9

• Some of the most liberal House Democrats had objected to the provision

• Earlier removal led Republicans to label Democrats as anti-Israel

Reuters | Washington

The US House of Represent-atives voted overwhelm-

ingly yesterday for legislation to provide $1 billion to Israel to replenish its “Iron Dome” missile-defence system, just two days after the funding was removed from a broader spend-ing bill.

The measure passed by 420 to 9, with two members voting present.

Some of the most liberal House Democrats had objected

to the provision and said they would vote against the broad spending bill if it was includ-ed. That threatened the bill’s passage, with Democrats only narrowly controlling the House, because Republicans have op-posed the plan to fund the fed-eral government through Dec. 3 and raise the nation’s borrowing limit.

The removal led Republicans

to label Democrats as anti-Isra-el, despite a long tradition in the US Congress of strong support from both parties for the Jew-ish state, to which Washington sends billions of dollars in aid every year.

Israel responded quickly. “Thanks to all members of the US House of Representatives, Democratic and Republican alike, for their sweeping support

for Israel and the commitment to its security. Those who try to challenge this support got a resounding response today,” Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in a statement.

Some liberal Democrats voiced concerns recently about US-Israel policy, citing human rights concerns like Palestini-an civilian casualties as Israel responded to Hamas rocket at-tacks in May. Israel said most of the 4,350 rockets fired from Gaza during the conflict were blown out of the sky by Iron Dome interceptors.

“We should also be talking about the Palestinian need for protection against Israeli at-tack,” Democratic Represent-ative Rashida Tlaib, an oppo-nent of the funding, said during debate.

The bill, which was intro-duced in the House on Wednes-day, provides $1 billion to re-place missile interceptors used during the May conflict.

There was no immediate word on timing of a vote in the Senate.

Most Gulf bourses rise as oil prices gain on tight supply

• Saudi markets are closed for a public holiday

Reuters

Most stock markets in the Gulf rose yesterday as oil

prices gained on growing fuel demand and a bigger-than-ex-pected draw in U.S. crude in-ventories, although the Abu Dhabi index bucked the trend to trade lower.

The oil market was also sup-ported by a return of appe-tite for risk assets as concerns eased over a potential default by property developer China Evergrande and its possible fallout on the world’s sec-ond-largest economy.

Dubai’s main share index added 0.2%, extending gains from the previous session, with blue-chip developer Emaar Properties rising 0.7% while DAMAC Properties ad-vanced 2.4%.

The founder of DAMAC Prop-erties is relaunching a partial offer to take the firm private

after the securities regulator of the United Arab Emirates granted approval, according to a statement on Thursday.

The offer came amid years of downturn in Dubai’s prop-erty market, exacerbated by the economic fallout from the pandemic. The United Arab Emirates’ Securities and Com-modities Authority has signed an agreement with the Dubai World Trade Centre Authority (DWTCA) aimed at supporting the trading of crypto assets in DWTCA’s free zone, state news agency reported on Wednes-day.

In Abu Dhabi, the index eased 0.1% following a 0.7% drop in the country’s largest lender First Abu Dhabi Bank.

Global investors have been on tenterhooks in recent weeks as debt payment obli-gations of China Evergrande, labouring under a $305 billion mountain of debt, triggered fears its malaise could pose systemic risks to the world’s second-largest economy.

Elsewhere, the Qatari index gained 0.4%, with petrochem-ical maker Industries Qatar rising over 1%.

Gas pipe workers find 800-year-old bodies in Peru

Reuters | London

Peruvian workers laying gas pipes found the remains

of eight people buried in a common tomb with food and musical instruments some 800 years ago, an archaeolo-gist said.

The bodies of adults and children had been wrapped in plant material, with corn, dishes, and a variety of wind instruments, including flutes, placed around them, Cecil-ia Camargo, an archaeologist hired by the Calidda gas com-

pany whose workers made the discovery, told AFP.

The eight had lived in the ancient town of Chilca some 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Lima. Some had been buried with shells on their heads, and had bags in which coca leaves, traditionally chewed as a stim-ulant, are kept.

“It is an important find that gives us more information about the pre-Hispanic history of Chilca,” said the researcher.

UN head says world must change food priorities to save planetAFP | New York

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres urged nations to

revamp their food priorities yes-terday, saying the world needed food systems that safeguard the environment.

“The war on our planet must end and food systems can help us build that peace,” the Secre-tary-General told a UN summit in New York.

Guterres said food systems “can and must play a leading role” in meeting the UN’s sustainable de-velopment goals by 2030.

The goals include ending pov-erty, protecting ecosystems and ensuring sustainable consump-tion and production patterns that limit waste.

Guterres told delegates of the food systems summit, taking place on the sidelines of the high-level meeting of the UN General As-sembly, that the world needed “nature-based solutions.”

He noted that food systems cur-rently generate one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions.

“It is possible to feed a grow-ing global population while also safeguarding our environment,” he said.

“It takes sustainable consump-tion and production methods and nature-based solutions. It takes the smart, sustainable manage-ment of natural resources -- from farms to fisheries,” Guterres add-ed.

The United States heeded Gu-terres’s call, announcing it would invest more than $10 billion over several years to promote a trans-formation of food systems.

The world’s top diplomat said

the international community was “waging a war against nature -- and reaping the bitter harvest.”

He cited “ruined crops, dwin-dling incomes and failing food systems.”

Guterres added that the world needs to “ramp up” emergency food and nutrition systems in areas affected by conflict or cli-mate emergencies and invest in early-warning famine prevention systems.

Guterres noted that three billion people cannot afford a healthy diet. He added that two billion are overweight or obese, with 462 million underweight.

He reminded delegates that nearly one-third of all food that is produced is lost or wasted and said changing food systems can drive the post-pandemic global recovery.

Guterres called on governments and businesses to work together to increase access to healthy diets, lamenting that nutritious food is “often too costly or inaccessible.”

US envoy to Haiti resigns, slams migrant deportationsAmbassador warns in resignation letter that Haiti ‘has collapsed’ and cannot provide basics for returning refugees

• Daniel Foote excoriates Washington in letter addressed to Antony Blinken

Reuters | Washington

The US special envoy to Hai-ti dramatically resigned yesterday in a letter that

excoriated the Biden administra-tion for deporting hundreds of migrants to the crisis-engulfed Caribbean nation from a camp on the US-Mexican border in recent days.

Daniel Foote, a career diplomat named to his post in July, said conditions in Haiti were so bad that US officials were confined to secure compounds. He said the “collapsed state” was unable to support the infusion of returning migrants.

“I will not be associated with the United States’ inhumane, counterproductive decision to deport thousands of Haitian ref-ugees and illegal immigrants,” Foote said in a letter addressed to Secretary of State Antony Blinken that circulated publicly yesterday.

The United States has returned 1,401 migrants from the camp to Haiti and taken another 3,206 people into custody, the Depart-ment of Homeland Security said on Wednesday.

Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, has gone through profound instability in recent weeks, including a pres-

idential assassination, gang vio-lence and a major earthquake.

Filippo Grandi, the head of the U.N refugee agency, warned that this week the US expulsions to Haiti might violate international law.

Foote submitted his resignation to Blinken on Wednesday, a State Department spokesperson said, adding that Washington was com-mitted to the long-term well being of Haiti, as well as offering imme-diate help to returning migrants.

The resignation follows grow-ing pressure on the administra-tion of US President Joe Biden from the United Nations and his fellow Democrats over the treat-ment of Haitians in a sprawling impromptu migrant camp in Tex-as near the Mexican border.

Biden’s handling of what Re-publicans portray as a crisis at the

border - including record num-bers of migrant detentions this year - has led to growing disil-lusionment from advocates who hoped for an end to deterrent measures brought in by his prede-cessor Donald Trump. read more

Foote’s decision to leave was interpreted and welcomed by rights groups as a stern criticism of the administration’s immigra-tion strategy.

“A big bold move. And a big deal,” said William O’Neill, a law-yer specializing in humanitarian, human rights and refugee law. “He will be missed.”

Mexican pressureAs many as 14,000 people gath-

ered in the camp en Del Rio, Texas last week. The population is now reduced to less than half by expul-sion flights and detentions. Oth-

ers have left the dusty riverbank on the Rio Grande for Mexico to avoid being sent home.

Wade McMullen, an attorney with the Robert F. Kennedy Hu-man Rights organization, said several hundred people, most-ly pregnant women and parents with children, had been released in Del Rio, Texas, over the past several days.

Images of US border guards on horseback using long reins to whip at Black migrants at the weekend caused outrage within the White House and from rights groups.

On the Mexican side of the river early yesterday, close to 20 police patrol cars lined the bank, over-looking the area where hundreds of Haitian migrants in recent days have crossed back and forth.

Migrants said they were awok-en at 6 a.m. by the cars driving through the camp that has sprung up alongside the river, and fear-ful of being detained, some mi-grants chose to take their things and cross back to the US side again.

Four Tunisian parties say president has lost his legitimacyReuters | Tunis

Four Tunisian parties said yesterday that President

Kais Saied has lost his legiti-macy and called for an end to what they called a coup after he took control of legislative and executive powers.

Saied said on Wednesday he would rule by decree and ignore parts of the constitution as he prepared to change the political system.

Attayar, Al Jouhmouri, Akef and Ettakatol parties said in a joint statement that Saied’s move enshrined an absolute power monopoly.

Saied has held nearly total power since July 25 when he sacked the prime minister, suspended parliament and as-sumed executive authority cit-ing a national emergency.

Yesterday’s opposition state-ment increased the pressure on him. Although the four parties are not the most powerful, they hold influence in the streets, especially Attayar, which was close to Saied before his inter-vention.

“We consider the president has lost his legitimacy by vio-lating the constitution.. and he will be responsible for all the possible repercussions of this dangerous step,” the four par-ties said in the statement.

Anour Ben Kadour, a senior official in the powerful UGTT labour union, said: “Tunisia is heading towards absolute, in-dividual rule.”

UGTT, which has about one million members and is a major force in Tunisian politics, has

started a meeting to formulate a position on Saied’s actions and is expected to issue a statement yesterday.

While many Tunisians have backed Saied and see his actions as necessary to oust a corrupt and unpopular political elite after years of economic stag-nation, his critics from across the spectrum say he is inexpe-rienced and uncompromising.

The leader of Tunisia’s pow-erful Islamist Ennahda party, Rached Ghannouchi, said on Wednesday that Saied’s decla-rations meant cancelling the constitution. The party - the biggest in parliament - would not accept that, he said.

Saied’s moves have under-mined the democratic gains of Tunisia’s 2011 revolution that ended autocratic rule, despite his pledges to uphold the free-doms won a decade ago.

Snubbed Australia to be ‘patient’ in fixing France ties

AFP | Washington

Australia’s leader said he is being given the cold

shoulder by French President Emmanuel Macron after the controversial scrapping of a submarine deal, but vowed to be “patient” in repairing frayed relations.

Speaking in Washington late Wednesday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he had tried to reach the French lead-er but the call had “not yet” happened.

“But we’ll be patient. We understand their disappoint-ment,” Morrison said.

It is a week since Austral-ia without warning tore up a long-standing Aus$90 billion (USD$66bn) deal to buy a doz-en French submarines.

Australia simultaneously announced plans to acquire at least eight US or British nu-clear-powered vessels after months of secret talks, spark-ing fury in Paris.

France in retaliation can-celled a cocktail party to mark US-French ties, recalled its am-bassadors to Washington and Canberra and accused both countries of backstabbing and lies.

While US President Joe Bid-

en and Macron have moved to patch up their differences in a 30-minute phone call, which the White House described on Wednesday as “friendly”, there has been no such effort made with Morrison.

France plans to return its ambassador to Washington next week, but there is no an-nouncement yet on the return of the French ambassador to Canberra.

“Australia decided not to proceed with a very signifi-cant defence contract. And un-derstandably, we know that France is disappointed about that,” Morrison said.

“I think those issues will take further time to work through than the ones that were being dealt with be-tween the United States and France.”

Sri Lanka shaman dies of COVID-19 after touting ‘blessed’ water cureAFP | Colombo

A high-profile shaman who tried to end Sri Lanka’s

COVID-19 outbreak with “bless-ed” water has died of the virus, his family said yesterday.

Eliyantha White, 48, who treated sports stars and top pol-iticians including the country’s prime minister, claimed in No-vember he could end the pan-demic in Sri Lanka and neigh-boring India by pouring pots of his “blessed” water into rivers.

Health minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi endorsed the water treatment, but was in-fected two months later and ended up in a hospital intensive care unit.

She was later demoted, and lost her portfolio, but remains in the cabinet.

White attracted internation-al attention in 2010 when leg-endary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar publicly thanked him for treating a knee inju-ry, saying it helped him hit the first-ever one-day international double century against South Africa. In a 2010 interview, White claimed he had “special powers” since the age of 12.

He has since treated other Indian cricket stars, including Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra.

White’s family said he had refused the Covid-19 vaccine.

His body was cremated at Colombo’s main cemetery yes-

terday in line with quarantine regulations.

Prime Minister Mahinda Ra-japaksa, who was among politi-cians to have consulted White, said on Twitter: “His legacy will continue to live through all the lives, he touched and healed of various ailments.”

But mainstream doctors de-scribed White as a fraud and Ayurveda physicians rejected his claims — even though the shaman said he used methods from the 3,000-year-old Indian medical tradition.

Sri Lanka’s total coronavirus deaths exceeded 12,000 with more than half a million people infected so far.

Doctors say the real toll is at least twice as high and author-ities have resorted to mass cre-mations to clear bodies piling up at hospitals and morgues.

News in brief u Ukraine’s parliament

passed a law to order “oligarchs” to register and stay out of politics, a day after an attempt to kill a top aide to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, which officials said could have been a response to the reform. The law provides a definition for an oligarch, while giving the authorities the power to designate individuals who meet the criteria. Oligarchs would be forbidden

from financing political parties or taking part in privatisations. Top officials, including the president, prime minister and head of the central bank, would be required to declare dealings they had with them.

u All six people on board an ageing Antonov An-26 transport plane that crashed in the Russian far east the previous day have been killed, Russia’s emergency services ministry said. The plane, which the TASS news agency said belonged to a company that performed technical checks at Russian airports and was 42 years old, disappeared from radar screens on Wednesday.

u More than 30 people have died because a health

workers’ strike in Guinea-Bissau has paralysed the healthcare system, a spokesperson for the nurses’ union said. The boycott over working conditions, pay and other issues was launched on Monday in the small West African nation where chronically under-equipped hospitals and

clinics have long angered workers and endangered patients.

u A Russian spy chief accused Britain of lies and trying to divert attention from other issues after British police said a third Russian suspect had been identified in the 2018 Novichok murder attempt on a former double agent. The attack on Sergei Skripal, who sold Russian secrets to Britain, caused one of the biggest rows between Russia and the West since the Cold War, leading to the tit-for-tat expulsion of dozens of diplomats after Britain blamed Moscow.

u The United Nations High Commissioner

for Human Rights yesterday warned of a human rights catastrophe under military rule in Myanmar and urged the international community to do more to prevent conflict from worsening. “The national consequences are terrible and tragic – the regional consequences could also be profound,” Michelle Bachelet said in a statement.

Royal Navy makes Daniel Craig honorary commanderAFP | London

James Bond actor Daniel Craig has been made an honorary

commander in the Royal Navy, matching the rank of the fic-tional superspy he plays on screen, the service an-nounced on Thursday.

The honour comes as Craig, 53, makes his final outing as Bond in “No Time To Die”, set for its

world premiere in London next Tuesday, after months

of coronavirus delays.Britain’s highest-ranking na-

val officer, First Sea Lord Ad-miral Tony Radakin, said he was “delighted” to give the honour to the actor, who has played 007 since 2006.

“Daniel Craig is well known for be-ing Commander Bond for the last 15 years, a naval officer who keeps Brit-ain safe through missions across the globe,” he added.

“That’s what the real Royal Navy does every day, using technology and skill the same way as Bond himself.”

Craig said he was “truly privileged and honoured” to join the oldest ser-vice in the British armed forces, and that he would use the role to support

personnel and their families. Before receiving the award, he met

Lieutenant Commander Frances Bond, who works at the Royal Navy’s head-quarters in Portsmouth, on England’s south coast.

“I’ve had my fair share of light-heart-ed banter from colleagues over being a real-life Bond but I never imagined I would actually one day get to meet the actor who played him,” the com-mander said.

The Royal Navy and the Ministry of Defence worked with the makers of “No Time To Die”, and the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon features in the film’s trailer.

The Royal Air Force was also in-volved, with RAF Brize Norton in Ox-fordshire, southern England, masquer-ading as a NATO airbase in the film.

Meghan Trainor suffered her first panic attack on live TVIANS | Los Angeles

‘All About That Bass’ hitmaker Meghan Trainor has opened up about her mental health strug-

gles, saying that she suffered her first panic attack live on television.

The singer was on ‘CBS This Morning’ with Gayle King ahead of announcing the 2017 Grammy nominees when she started “vibrating” and felt she was “dying”, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Trainor said: “I was announcing the nomi-nees, and I was vibrating. I felt like I was going to pass out on live television. I was like, ‘What’s happening? I must be dying.’

“As soon as they said ‘Cut,’ I went offstage and was [gasping for air] in front of everyone.”

Meghan - who welcomed her first child, son Ri-ley, into the world in February - has praised TV pre-senter Gayle for helping her in the scary situation.

Verstappen laughs off Hami’s pressure commentsLewis Hamilton says he has empathy for title rival Max Verstappen

• Briton suggests title rival is under pressure

• Verstappen responds with sarcasm

Reuters | London

Max Verstappen hit back with sarcasm yester-day after seven times

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton suggested his young Red Bull rival was feel-ing the pressure of a first title tilt.

“I’m so nervous I can barely sleep,” the Dutch 23-year-old told reporters at the Russian Grand Prix when Hamilton’s comments were put to him.

“It’s so horrible to fight for a title. I really hate it,” he added.

Verstappen said those who knew him could testify how re-laxed he was.

“I’m very chilled. It’s the best feeling ever to have a great car where you go into every week-end and you can fight for a win... those comments just show you that he really doesn’t know me,” he said of his Mercedes rival.

“Which is fine. I also don’t need to know him, how he is fully. I just focus on myself and I really enjoy it out there in front and hopefully we can do that for a very long time.”

Verstappen is five points clear of Hamilton after 14 of 22 rounds but has a three-place grid penalty for Sochi after they

collided in the previous race at Monza.

Their clashes have become the story of the season as Ver-stappen and Red Bull seek to end seven years of Mercedes domination and dethrone the most successful driver of all time.

Hamilton had earlier told re-porters that he knew from ex-perience what Verstappen was going through.

“Obviously he won’t admit to it and I’m not going to make an assumption,” the Briton added when asked whether he felt the pressure was starting to catch up with Verstappen.

“I’m just saying that I remem-ber what it was like when I had my first one and it definitely mounted up. It was difficult, it was intense, I was going through a lot of different emotions and

I didn’t always handle it the best.”

“That’s to be expected ... there’s a lot of self-expectation and pressure because the desire to win is huge. I empathise and understand that.”

Hamilton won his first cham-pionship in 2008 as a 23-year-old with McLaren, in what was his second season. Verstappen is now a veteran of 133 races and in his seventh campaign.

No Lingering EffectsHamilton said there were no

lingering effects from Monza, where Verstappen’s car ended up on top of the Mercedes with a rear wheel hitting the Briton’s helmet.

He said he had done yoga and acupuncture and his phys-iotherapist Angela Cullen had flown with him to America,

where he attended the Met Gala fashion show in New York.

The 36-year-old batted aside reported comments from Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko questioning how much pain he had really felt.

“I don’t really listen to what these individuals talk about. It’s natural when a car lands on your head that you’re going to have some sort of discomfort,” he said.

“I didn’t say I was dying. Just aware that in a millisecond an-ything can happen. I did feel grateful to come out of it not badly injured and move on.”

Hamilton said he was putting no energy into worrying about more collisions.

“I think what’s important is that we just continue to race hard and fair and I have no doubts that we will both be professional and learn from the past,” he said.

Sola not intimidated by more experienced opponent on his second pro fightTDT | Manama

The former #1 ranked am-ateur fighter in the world

and IMMAF European champi-on Axel Sola might be heading to his second professional fight but he’s showing the confidence of a long-time veteran. Ahead of his fight against Wawrzyniec Bartnik at BRAVE CF 54, the Frenchman seemed unfazed by the fact that his opponent is going to his 8th pro bout.

“I believe in my coach. He told me it was time for me to fight this kind of opponent, so I just listened and I did. I trust him and I trust my skills. He knows me, he knows how

I fight. If he says I’m ready, it means I’m ready”, he said.

“I think he (Bartnik” is very tough, he is hard to finish”, he continued. “He can take shots on the head and he will keep moving forward. He is look-ing for close-range fighting. I just have to do my game to stay technical and I don’t see how he can beat me”.

Speaking about his own abil-ities, Sola said that he believes that being a more well-rounded fighter will give him the edge.

“I am a more complete fight-er, so I will be able to switch things up to get the points or to get the finish or the victory and I don’t think he is able to switch things up like I can”, he finished.

Axel Sola vs Wawrzyniec Bartnik takes place at BRAVE CF 54, on September 25, in Konin, Poland. The event will be head-lined by the Lightweight title bout between the champion Amin Ayoub and the challenger Ahmed Amir.

BRAVE CF president initiates a new national MMA project in PolandTDT | Manama

Mohammed Shahid, the president of BRAVE Com-

bat Federation, has finally ar-rived in Konin, Poland as the global outfit gears up for its maiden event in the country --BRAVE CF 54-- on Saturday, September 25th.

To celebrate its fifth anni-versary in the mixed martial arts industry, the Bahrain-based promotion has prepared a stacked fight card headlined by a grudge match between BRAVE CF Lightweight World Champi-on Amin “Fierceness” Ayoub of France and challenger Ahmed “The Butcher” Amir of Egypt.

Aside from the main event, the show also features three of the country’s up-and-com-ing stars who will be getting a fair share of the international limelight.

Marcin “Bomba” Bandel, Wawrzyniec Bartnik and Ew-elina Wozniak will be donning the national colors of crimson red and immaculate white at the historic BRAVE CF 54.

Meanwhile, Irish stand-out Blaine O’Driscoll is set to square off with Muhammad “The Punisher” Mokaev in the co-feature attraction.

As the countdown begins,

Shahid can’t help but look back at the things that his company has accomplished in Europe in the span of nine months.

“BRAVE CF has always been known as a national project with the focus to provide sports values to a nation. It’s clearly seen with the government rela-

tion BRAVE CF has with the host nations,” he stated.

“But at the same time the events are also a unique net-working opportunity where international government of-ficials, global business tycoons and celebrities around the world come together.”

Though it looks like BRAVE CF has attained a significant stride across the continent in 2021, it seems to be the tip of the iceberg.

Most recently, BRAVE CF an-nounced that it will be holding a card in Russia towards the back end of this year, aiming to return to where the company has started this year.

Further details about the or-ganization’s return to Russia will be announced in the com-ing weeks.

BRAVE CF President congratulates HH Shaikh Khalid on five years of successTDT | Manama

BRAVE Combat Federation completes five years of tre-

mendous success worldwide under the vision and leader-ship of His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa and BRAVE CF president Mo-hammed Shahid has congratu-lated His Highness on the mo-mentous occasion marking the fifth anniversary of BRAVE CF.

“On this day marking 5 years of BRAVE CF, I would like to thank His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa for his vision, leadership and support,” says BRAVE CF Pres-ident Mohammed Shahid. “It has been 5 years of advocating change in the MMA industry, globalising the sport, empow-ering governance and provid-ing opportunities. We look for-ward to another 5 years that will implement what was built in the first 5 years. Thank you to the BRAVE nation for their love and support. Together let’s continue the take over and introduce a new age of MMA.”

In five years of operations,

the fastest-growing MMA or-ganization in the world has broken several records, trav-elling to 24 different countries and making its debut in Poland on September 25th, with 54 extravagant events helping to revolutionize the sport around the globe.

In this period, BRAVE Com-bat Federation became the only international promotion to do events in South Asia, West Asia, Central Asia, and South East Asia with the larg-est active market share in Asia with operations developing across the continent.

It has also held events in nine European countries across Scandinavia, South Europe, Central Europe, South-East-ern Europe, and Eastern Eu-rope making it the leading international promotion in Europe with the largest MMA market share. BRAVE CF also made history in Africa, being the only international organ-ization to host events in the continent.

In these five years, BRAVE CF has also developed the fin-est scouting program in the world of MMA, granting oppor-tunities to fighters from across the globe, and providing talent from around the world with the global opportunity they crave and deserve.

Mick Schumacher to race for Haas in 2022

AFP | London

Mick Schumacher will continue to race for the

Haas team in the 2022 For-mula One season, it was con-firmed yesterday.

The 22-year-old German is the son of seven-time for-mer world champion Michael Schumacher, who has not been seen in public since suffering head injuries in a skiing acci-dent in 2013.

“By being part of the For-mula 1 field, I am living my dream,” said Schumacher in a Haas statement.

“The first year together with Haas F1 is very exciting and instructive, and I’m sure I can bring all the experience I’ve gained into the coming year.”

Ahead of this weekend’s Russian Grand Prix in Sochi, the American racing team also confirmed Russia’s Nikita Mazepin will continue with the outfit next year.

After winning the Formula Two world title in 2020, Schu-

macher made his F1 debut in March, but has yet to finish in the top ten of his 14 races so far.

His best result was 12th at the Hungarian Grand Prix last month.

Haas hopes to have a more competitive car next season under the new technical reg-ulations.

“With the ambitions of the racing team and the support of Ferrari, I obviously believe we can get closer to the field and fight for points,” said Schu-macher, who is also part of the Ferrari academy.
