Pender County is rich in natural resources. We’re a destination vacation playground of water sports and beaches, hiking and exploring. Traverse the Intracoastal Waterway and our inlets. We have many charters and tour companies who will help you explore our waters. We invite you to fish the Northeast Cape Fear and Black Rivers, launch a canoe at Moores Creek National Battlefield, or fish from our famous ocean piers. Our attractions are award winning. Visit the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center where sick and injured sea turtles are nursed back to health. Visit the Missiles and More Museum, where rocket technology was developed in the Assembly Building and where pirate lore is displayed. Don’t miss a visit to Moores Creek National Battlefield, Southeastern North Carolina’s only national park, the site of the first Patriot’s victory over the Loyalists. Tour the Town of Burgaw, the town that Hollywood loves to film. Head on over to the Missiles and More Museum in the afternoon for an adventure to learn about pirates, rockets and a display that may well be the world’s largest seashell collection. Located at 720 Channel Blvd., admission is free. Watch for free programs too!

You might have to stand in line in the sun or with an umbrella, but the wait is worth a tour of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. See where the turtles are nurtured and readied for release. Admission fees.

Visit this throwback roller skating rink, Topsail Skating Rink, located above the Topsail Beach Post Office.

Visit Poplar Grove Plantation, the farmer’s market kicks off their season on the front lawn of the beautiful, Historic Pop-lar Grove on Wednesdays each week, open from 8 am - 1 pm. The Farmer’s Market at Poplar Grove provides an opportunity for local growers and producers to sell their goods directly to consumers. The plantation has history of peanut farming, Civil War, and Gullah Geechee Heritage. Drive to Burgaw and see where shows like Revolution, Under the Dome, and countless movies were filmed. Shop & dine while letting the locals tell you about filming!

Experience Moores Creek National Battlefield, both the History Trail and Tar Heel Trails offer great views of park resources, and a glimpse into the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge. Park visitors can pick up their Passport stamp and park brochure, as well as brochures for other historic sites around the area.

The insider’s scoop on what you need to know at the beach...

In Topsail Beach:Two beach wheelchairs are available for visitors and residents. Reservations and information are available from the Topsail Beach Police Department. (910-328-4851) or visit online at www.topsail-beach.org/Departments/Police/Beach-Wheelchair

Traditional golf carts are not permitted on the roadways in Topsail Beach. Low Speed Vehicles equipped with headlamps, stop lamps, turn signals, tail lamps, reflex reflectors, parking brakes, rearview mirrors, windshields, windshield wipers, speedometer, seat belts, and a vehicle identification number are permitted.

In Surf City:Beach wheelchairs are available by contacting the Surf City Fire Department.910-328-0175.

We’re one of the pet-friendliest islands in North Carolina. In Surf City, dogs are allowed on the beach, but must be on a leash at all times. In the Town of Topsail Beach, in season, dogs must be on a leash, however, from Oct. 1st – May 14th, dogs are permitted off leash as long as they are under voice command.

Remember the turtles, lights out! If you are beachfront, please turn off the rear porch and deck lights. Turtles are drawn to light and if the porch light is on facing the beach, turtles, especially hatchlings, become disoriented and die. They need to be guided by the moonlight. Secondly, if you dig a hole in the sand on the beach, please fill it in. In addition to human injury, the sea turtles can become

trapped and injured. You are welcomed to set up tents and chairs, but leaving these items on the beach overnight is prohibited.

Glass is prohibited on the beach.

There is no overnight camping on the beach.

Do not use charcoal grills on the beach.

Stay off the dunes. Walking on the dunes will result in a $500 fine.

Do not park on sidewalks. If you think you have a great parking spot on the side of the road, remember, both sets of tires must be off the pavement. Remember to respect our property owners.

Jolly Roger PierExtending 850 feet into the Atlantic Ocean, the Jolly Roger Pier has long been an area landmark known not only for its superb fishing, but also as a great place to stroll. The pier is fully lit at night and an evening stroll is a tradition for many generations of Topsail vacationers. For the expert or novice fisherman, the Pier has a fully stocked tackle shop, with all bait and tackle for pier, surf, sound, and offshore fishing. Rod rentals, ice, snacks, domestic and imported beer, and other beverages are also available. The tackle shop also carries a complete line of beach necessities, from sunscreen and toiletries, to Jolly Roger branded hats and t-shirts. Our staff is a great source of local

Surf City Ocean PierTopsail Island’s first fishing pier. Originally built in 1948, it was destroyed by Hurricane Fran in 1996 and totally rebuilt and reopened in August of 1997. Canetuck Community CenterThe Canetuck Community Center, formerly the Canetuck Rosenwald school, was constructed as a two- teacher Rosenwald school in western Pender County, NC. It opened in 1922 and was purchased back by the

Pender County CourthouseThe courthouse is one of the most attractive historical buildings in Burgaw. Built on November 6, 1936, this three-story structure was designed with several unique features by William Henley Dietrick.
