Founded in 1886,Young HarrisCollege is an independent, UnitedMethodist-affiliated, two-year,co-educational, residential college.
FINANCIAL AIDApproximately 91 percent of YoungHarris College students receivedsome form of scholarship, grant orwork assistance. In the 2006-2007academic year $7,878,823 wasawarded to needy and deservingstudents. Eligible students mayreceive low interest, long-term loansfrom Young Harris College funds;FSEOG;HOPE Scholarship; federalwork-study; and part-time jobs.Georgia residentsare eligible to receive the GeorgiaTuition and Equalization Grant.
PHYSICAL PLANTHistorical value as of June 30, 2007:$42,216,023.The physical plantconsists of three academic buildings,weight room, library, Christian lifecenter, gymnasium, dining hall,chapel, church, auditorium, studentcenter, administrative building, sevenresidence halls, five athletic fields, anoutdoor education center, fitnesscenter and a two-mile cross-countytrail. WILLS
A properly drawn will is an excellentway to remember YHC and make asignificant contribution.This gift isin a designated amount, part of anestate or the residue of a will givenat the time of the donor’s death.
LIVING TRUSTS
A donor may, in his or her lifetime,enter into a legal agreement or contractfor the benefit of an organizationsuch as YHC.The donor funds thistrust with assets, but retains the rightto terminate, cancel or revoke the trust.
The trustor or grantor transfersproperty of any kind to a trustee,whoinvests and reinvests the property andpays the income to a named beneficiary.When the trustor dies, the trust isterminated or continued for beneficiariesfor a definite period of time.At sometime, either a trustor’s death or at thedeath of his or her beneficiaries, theprincipal goes to the college.
LIFE ESTATE AGREEMENT
Donors may contribute a personalhome, a farm or other assets to YHCand retain the right to live in thehome or farm and use the property toproduce income. At the donor’sdeath, the property would go directlyto the college without going throughprobate or taxation.
DEFERRED ANNUITY
The donor makes a charitable giftto the institution before retirement.The institution agrees to pay aguaranteed life income, beginningwhen the donor retires or at any datehe or she specifies.This program isideal for donors who would like tomake a sizable charitable gift but areconcerned about having sufficientretirement income.
CHARITABLE REMAINDERUNITRUSTS
Created by the donor, this life-income plan irrevocably transfersassets to a trust, which pays the donoran annual income for life.The income is based on a fixedpercentage, which is determined bythe fair market value of the trust asre-valued annually. Upon the deathof the donor, the trust assets aretransferred to YHC.
CHARITABLE REMAINDERANNUITY TRUSTS
This life-income plan irrevocablytransfers assets to a trust, which paysthe donor an annual fixed dollaramount.The donor can also provideincome for another person. At thetime of the donor’s death, the trustprincipal becomes the property ofthe YHC.
CHARITABLE LEAD TRUSTS
With this plan, payments are madeto the charitable institution for apredetermined time, after which thetrust corpus goes to a designatedremainder beneficiary.
GIFT ANNUITY
Donor transfers cash or otherproperty to YHC and in return, thecollege pays the donor a specifiedamount annually or quarterly forthe remainder of the donor’s life.This gift has tax advantages and isa way to make a gift and receive anincome for life.
