YEAR 12 RETREAT: ‘LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE AND SPIRIT SOAR’

A beautiful way to commence the year, our Year 12 students enjoyed an enlightening three-day Retreat at Aquinas College in North Adelaide last week.

With spectacular views overlooking Montefiore Hill and Adelaide Oval, the theme of the 2016 Year 12 Retreat was ‘Let Your Light Shine and Spirit Soar’.

Students embraced the fantastic opportunities on offer, including preparing themselves personally for the year, an open forum discussion with Year 12

teachers, meditation sessions, kite flying, cricket watching at Adelaide Oval, a talk from an Education Psychologist, a shared Mass with Monsignor Swann,

special talks from staff and a spooky ghost tour. It was a wonderful chance for students to reflect on their past schooling years and to plan and prepare

themselves as a group for their final year ahead.

Thank you so much to all staff who attended and to all the students for making the 2016 Year 12 Retreat a very memorable one for all!

Mr Adam Cibich,Assistant Principal - Religious Identity & Mission (APRIM)

WE BELIEVE YOUR BEST WILL BE EXCELLENT!

Dear Gleeson Families,

It is my pleasure to extend a very warm welcome to all of you for the New Academic Year 2016. I hope that all families had a happy and holy Christmas and I wish everyone a successful and joyous new year.

This year has been dedicated to building a ‘Culture of Excellence’ at Gleeson College. ‘Culture’ simply describes ‘the way we do things here’ but excellence may be more difficult to describe. Excellence - Personal, Academic and Spiritual - is defined by “The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential.” (Confucius) As such, the excellence we expect from all members of our community is simply their best, because we believe that their best will be excellent.

The key for moving towards a culture of excellence is having high and reasonable expectations of everyone in the Gleeson College community. The questions on everyone’s lips should be ‘Is this excellent?’; ‘Is this my best?’

Our Annual Improvement Plan (AIP) is based on building a culture of excellence and it itemises the focus areas, the personnel and the strategies that are important to the success of this endeavour. One such area is Buildings and Grounds. You will notice in this edition of The Globe some beautiful photographs of the courtyard, front of the College and surrounds which highlight some of the work that has already been done over the summer break. Excellent buildings and learning spaces by themselves do not result in excellent work - but they do matter! They are a visual model of the ethic within the school. As we move through the year I will highlight other important parts of the AIP and keep you informed of our progress.

The fantastic thing about building a

culture of excellence at Gleeson College is that we are starting from a very high base. An excellent example of this is the great results produced by our Class of 2015.

Special congratulations go to our 2015 Dux of College, Olivia Keatch, who received four Merit Awards from five subjects studied in Year 12! Our College website highlights the amazing work of our Year 12 students last year and we will have a formal opportunity to recognise their magnificent efforts at our Academic Assembly on Wednesday 24 February.

In fact, the academic results of all students at Gleeson College in 2015 were outstanding with some 98% of all results (Year 8 to 12) for Semester 2 in the A - C grade range. The academic ‘bar’ has certainly been set high for 2016 and we will endeavour to improve on these results yet again.

Year 8 CampAs I write, our Year 8 students are enjoying a three-day camp at Wallaroo and Port Hughes. The induction camp provides a perfect opportunity for the newest members of our community to meet and make new friends whilst learning about our College and what is means to be a member of this fantastic community. Please look out for a camp report and lots of photos in the next issue of The Globe.

Parent Information Evening 2016A reminder to our families that this very important evening takes place on Monday 15 February, commencing at 7.00pm. I urge all families to come along, meet with relevant teachers and receive important information pertinent to your child’s year level.

Shrove Tuesday/Ash WednesdayThis week saw the beginning of the most significant celebration for the Catholic Church, Easter. Shrove Tuesday followed by Ash Wednesday, which provide the familiar commencement to the Easter period, were celebrated at Gleeson with a traditional pancake breakfast on Tuesday and our ashes ceremony on Wednesday. At our Liturgy on Wednesday, all students and staff received the sign of the cross marked on their forehead with ashes and as a community we prayed the following

Lenten prayer which families may like to pray during Lent:

Oh God our Heavenly Father;Help me to see the world with

new eyes this Lent;Open my heart to love my neighbors

around the world, especiallythe poor overseas;

Fill my heart with a yearning for a just world for each member of our human family, no matter where they may be.

I call on You to give me strength, hope and inspiration:

to help me pray for fulfillment ofthe needs of those who live in

poverty each day;too fast to make me aware of the needs

of the poor and understandtheir realities;

to give generously so that others might live with hope and dignity.

Give me courage to reach out to my brothers and sisters, so that I might

share my gifts, granted by You, and in doing so, share Your love.

I make this prayer in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who humbled himself

and lived among the poor. Teach me that Jesus’ example of concern for the

poor is made real today when I live and work in service to the poor.

Together we pray,With One Heart. Amen

I pray that God will bless all members of our College and guide us as a Catholic Community in our important work throughout this year, and in closing, I wish every student and their respective families all the very best for 2016.

Mr J Corbo,Deputy Principal

EXCITED YEAR 8 STUDENTS HEAD OFF FOR SEASIDE CAMP!

We warmly welcome former Socceroo and Adelaide United Captain Travis Dodd to our Gleeson College community! Travis will head our World Football Program in 2016, bringing both a wealth of knowledge and vast experience to share with our young students.

Travis looks forward to helping our young players develop their football skills in all facets of the game and reach their potential, both on and off the field.

Travis became the first indigenous footballer to score a goal for the Socceroos in 2006 against Kuwait, before leading the Reds during the club’s finest year in 2008, where they became Australia’s very first club to reach an AFC Champions League final. Travis also led Adelaide to the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan where the club finished 5th later that year, and became the first Adelaide United player to play 100 competitive games. A two-year contract with Perth

Glory was signed at the start of the 20011/12 season, where he played until sidelined by an unfortunate ACL injury in 2013. Fully recovered, back in Adelaide and ready to hit the pitch again, Travis signed with National Premier League (NPL) club Metrostars last Wedneday, and he has also taken up a guest commentary

position with Fox Sports Football! You may have seen or heard Travis on the commentary desk when the Reds took on Sydney FC at Coopers last Friday!

Recipe Legend:C = Cup | T = Tablespoon | t = teaspoon

We made these pancakes, along with our ‘That Tasty Berry Jam’, for students on Shrove Tuesday

this week! They were a big hit all round!

Serves 2 (6-8 small pancakes)

INGREDIENTS:• 2 bananas• 2 eggs• 2 heaped T almond meal• 2 T dessicated coconut• 2 mini scoops or squirts pure

stevia (or 2tsp honey, pure maple)• 2 tsp coconut oil for cooking

METHOD:1. Mash banana and then add in eggs

and sweetener, mix well.2. Stir in almond meal and coconut.

3. Heat some of the coconut oil in a pan and cook 1/4 cup of mixture at a time (any bigger and they are hard to flip as they are soft pancakes). Repeat until all the mixture is used.

4. Enjoy hot or cold - so tasty they don’t need any topping!

TIP: These pancakes can be a little difficult to flip in the frypan. Try spooning mixture on to a baking tray lined with baking paper, making them to desired size. Bake in a pre-heated oven of 180 degrees for approx. 10-15 mins. Makes perfect, even-sized fluffy pancakes!

INGREDIENTS:• 1 x bag of frozen mixed berries• 1 x TBS of Rice Malt Syrup• 1/2 fresh lemon (juice)

A Little Extra >That Tasty Berry Jam!!

METHOD:1. Place berries in saucepan on low

to medium heat.2. Add rice malt syrup, lemon juice.3. Allow berries to defrost, soon they

will begin to melt down and form a jam consistency. *Don’t rush this process by putting it on high - you don’t want to burn the berries.

4. Simmer slowly until a jam consistency develops.

5. Taste the jam and if you like add a sprinkle of bi-carb, this will help balance out any acidity. *When adding the bi-carb, beware of the ‘bubbles and foam’, continue stirring, they will disappear.

6. Cool jam.7. Store in airtight jar or container in

the fridge. Yum!
