The Black Church: This is OurStory, This is Our Song is a mov-ing four-hour, two-part series thattraces the 400-year-old story of the Black church in America. Thedocumentary reveals how Black people have worshipped and, through their spiritual journeys, improvised ways to bring their faithtraditions from Africa to the New World, while translating them intoa form of Christianity that was truly their own.

For many, the Black church is their house of worship. For some,it is ground zero for social justice. For others, it is a place of tran-scendent cultural gifts exported to the world, from the soulful voicesof preachers to the sublime sounds of gospel music. For the Rev.Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., going to church in America was also“the most segregated hour” of the week. The Black church was aworld within a world, where Black Americans could be themselves;and the epicenter of the freedom struggle that revolutionized theUnited States across slavery and abolition, Reconstruction, JimCrow and the Great Migration, and the civil rights movement.

“This is the story and song our ancestors bequeathed to us, andit comes at a time in our country when the very things they struggledand died for—faith and freedom, justice and equality, democracyand grace—all are on the line,” says writer and host Henry LouisGates, Jr. “No social institution in the Black community is more cen-tral and important than the Black church.” Part one explores the roots of African American religion, begin-ning with the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the extraordinary ways

slaved Africans preserved andadapted their faith practices underthe brutal realities of human bond-

age. As an awakening of Protestant Christianity spread in the 18thcentury, Black Americans embraced a vision of a liberating God andBlack churches that would become bedrock institutions in the longstruggle to dismantle slavery.

With Emancipation and Reconstruction, independent Blackchurches flourished and helped the formerly enslaved navigate aperilous freedom by fulfilling the social, educational, financial, cul-tural and political needs of African Americans.

Part two continues with the Black church expanding its reach toaddress social inequality and minister to those in need, from theexodus out of the Jim Crow South to the heroic phase of the civilrights movement in the 1950s and ‘60s.

Renowned participants in the series include Oprah Winfrey; JohnLegend; Jennifer Hudson; Bishop Michael Curry of the EpiscopalChurch; Pastors Shirley Caesar and BeBe Winans; civil rights leaderRev. Al Sharpton; and many more.

As some of the most influential Black voices today reflect on themeaning of the church in their lives and to the country, the seriescontemplates where the “promised land” is for this generation andthe next.

The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song can beseen on 3-2 Tuesdays, the 16th and 23rd at 8:00 p.m. On 3-1, watchit Fridays, the 19th and 26th at 9:00 p.m.

The Neville Brothers: Tell It Like It Isis a raucous concert filmed in New Orleansin 1989. Orchestrated by the iconic HerbieHancock, brothers Art, Charles, Cyril, andAaron Neville were joined that evening by theirfamily, and many of their best friends, includ-ing Gregg Allman, Jimmy Buffett, John Hiatt,Bonnie Raitt,B u c k w h e a tZydeco, and theDixie Cups. Theresulting perfor-mance is a trib-ute to a greatAmerican bandwhose musicstill resonatestoday.

Among the bevy of songs performedinclude “Yellow Moon” by John Hiatt, “Mid-night Rider” by Gregg Allman and “Tell ItLike It Is” by Aaron Neville. For the finale, all of the Neville family and every guest per-form the Neville Brothers’ hit song “Fire onthe Bayou.”

The Neville Brothers: Tell It Like It Iswill be broadcast on 3-2 Friday, the 12th at9:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Saturday, the 13th at8:00 p.m.

The Cold War and Civil Rights movementcollide in Jazz Ambassadors, the remarkablestory of music, diplomacy and race. In 1955,as the Soviet Union’s propaganda about theU.S. and American racism spread globally,African-American Congressman AdamClayton Powell, Jr. convinced PresidentEisenhower thatjazz was the bestway to intervenein the Cold Warcultural conflict.

For the next de-cade, America’smost influentialjazz artists, includ-ing Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, DukeEllington and Benny Goodman, along withtheir racially-integrated bands, traveled theglobe to perform as cultural ambassadors.

Their painful moral dilemma: how couldthey promote the image of a tolerant Americaabroad when the country still practiced JimCrow segregation and racial equality re-mained an unrealized dream?

Jazz Ambassadors airs on 3-2 Tuesday,the 2nd at 8:00 p.m. and Friday, the 5th at9:00 p.m. It airs on 3-1 Saturday, the 6th at9:00 p.m.

From the Jamaican national hero Nannyof the Maroons to the NFL quarterback ColinKaepernick, 400 Years: Taking the Kneecelebrates individuals who fought andstruggled against colonialism, slavery andtheir legacies.

Covering 400 years of intertwining Brit-ish and American histories, the film beginswith the European slave trade and then fol-lows the continuing struggle to equality fromthere. Through war, revolution and emanci-pation, 400 Years revisits every stage of theplight towards breaking down the systemsof slavery, right to the present day.

It is a reminder of the importance of re-membering those who have pioneered, re-sisted, spoken out and paved the way.

400 Years: Taking the Knee airs on 3-2Tuesday, the 9th at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday,the 14th at 2:00 p.m. Watch it on 3-1 Mon-day, the 15th at 7:00 p.m.

In “Beyond the Elements,” a three-part series on Nova, discover the fascinating chemistry that makes our worldand everything in it—including us. Host David Pogue setsout on a quest to find the key molecules and chemical re-actions that have paved the way for human civilization, life, and even the universe as we know it.

“Reactions” – Just about every solid, liquid, or gas inthe world as we know it begins with reactions betweenindividual atoms and molecules. Nova dives into the trans-formative world of chemical reactions, from the complexformula that produces cement to the single reaction that’sallowed farmers to feed a global population by the bil-lions—a reaction that when reversed, unleashes the pow-erful chemistry of high explosives.

“Indestructible” – Glass so strong you can jump on it,rubber so tough it protects a clay pot dropped from 50 feet, endless varieties of plastic. Scientists and engineers havecreated virtually indestructible versions of common mate-rials by manipulating the chains of interlocking atoms thatgive them strength. Explore the fantastic chemistry behindthe everyday materials we depend on.

“Life” – Without the chemistry of photosynthesis, ozone and a molecule called Rubisco, none of us would behere. So how did we get so lucky? To find out, Nova inves-tigates the surprising molecules that allowed life on Earthto begin, and ultimately thrive. Along the way, we find outwhat we’re all made of—literally.

“Beyond the Elements” on Nova airs on 3-2 Wednes-days at 8:00 p.m. beginning the 3rd and Saturdays at 10:00p.m. beginning the 6th. Please see AtoZ on page 18 for 3-1air dates.

Beyond the Elements In “Mars 2020” on Nova, NASA at-

tempts to land its newest robotic geolo-gist, a rover named Perseverence(“Percy”), on the red planet. LaunchedJuly 30th from Cape Canaveral, NASA’sMars 2020 mission is designed to takethe rover and the first-ever space heli-copter to Mars, hopefully arriving in lateFebruary 2021. Once there, the missioncenters on detecting Mars’ habitability, and even signs of past life, as well asexperiments that investigate the possi-bility of human exploration.

The rover is about 2,300 pounds andis the size of a small car. It will spend atleast one Mars year (about 687 Earth days) using a specially designed drillto collect rock cores and store the samples on the surface until future mis-sions can return them to Earth.

Nestled inside the rover itself, MOXIE (Mars Oxygen In-Situ ResourceUtilization Experiment) will test whether it might be possible for future as-tronauts to turn the planet’s carbon dioxide atmosphere into oxygen.

The rover is accompanied by the first-ever space helicopter, dubbed In-genuity. The diminutive aircraft weighs only four pounds, but it will attemptto do something big: fly in another world. Ingenuity will use four carbon-fiber blades spinning at 40 rotations per second to navigate gravity that isa fraction of Earth’s.

The mission’s carefully chosen landing site is the Jezero Crater, wherean ancient river delta full of mineral-rich sediments joined a huge lake—thekind of place scientists think might have supported life.

“Mars 2020” on Nova airs on 3-2 Wednesday, the 24th at 8:00 p.m. andSaturday, the 27th at 10:00 p.m. Please see AtoZ on page 18 for 3-1 air dates.

When the irrepressible Dolly Parton sang, “Workin’ 9 to 5, what a way to makea livin’” she was doing more than just shining a light on the professional fate ofAmerican women. Ms. Parton was singing the autobiographical tale of a movementthat started with a group of Boston secretaries in the early 1970s. “9 to 5: The Storyof a Movement” on Independent Lens is the previously untold story about the sec-retaries who fought their bosses, inspired a hit movie and changed the Americanworkplace. In the 1970s, secretaries and clerical workers were the low-wage workers of theirera. They made up the largest sector of the American workforce, with over 20 million

employed. Inspired by the growing Women’s Libera-tion Movement, founders Ellen Cassedy and KarenNussbaum started a cause they called “9to5.” Theirgoals were simple: better pay, job descriptions, respect, advancement opportunities, and an end to sexual ha-rassment. They employed outrageous wit and wrypublicity stunts to attract the press and shame their

bosses into change. As America confronts the growing reality of deep income in-equality and commonplace sexual harassment, the stories and strategies of thesebold, creative women continue to resonate deeply.

Independent Lens “9to5: The Story of a Movement” can be seen on 3-2 Monday,the 1st at 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 7th at 2:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Sunday, the 7th at9:00 p.m.

On Easter Sunday, 1939, contralto MarianAnderson stepped up to a microphone infront of the Lincoln Memorial. Inscribed onthe walls of the monument behind her werethe words “all men are created equal.” Barredfrom performing in Constitution Hall becauseof her race, Anderson would sing for the

American people in theopen air. Celebrated by mae-stros in Europe and byboth white and Black au-diences at home, herfame hadn’t beenenough to spare herfrom the indignities and

outright violence of racism and segregation.“Voice of Freedom” weaves together

Anderson’s rich life story with this landmarkmoment in history, exploring fundamentalquestions about talent, race and fame.

Neurobiologist Christopher Kerr is a hos-pice doctor. All of his patients die. Yet hehas cared for thousands of patients who, inthe face of death, speak of love and grace.Death is But a Dream travels to Buffalo, NewYork, where Dr. Kerr is part of a researchteam studying the dreams of dying patients.

People who are close to death often re-port dreams or visions of deceased lovedones at their death beds, usually “invisible”to others in the room. These end-of-life ex-periences resurrect past relationships, mean-ingful events and themes of love and forgive-ness. Often times these visions have themesof travel or preparing to travel somewherewith a loved one.

Such experiences have been reportedacross history and across cultures. Withcandid interviews from hospice patients andtheir clinicians, Death is But a Dream con-tributes to our understanding of medicine’sand humanity’s greatest mystery.

In the Pledge of Allegiance, we vow “jus-tice for all,” but when “all” includes accusedinternational and domestic terrorists, justicebecomes a contentious notion.

The Devil’s Advocate provides a rare lookinto the lives of three high-profile defenseattorneys, their clients, and the implicationsof the words “justice for all.”

For the defense lawyers who representaccused terrorists, upholding justice feelslike the embodiment of their civil duties, evenas vocal naysayers lambast them as unpa-triotic traitors. These attorneys in New Yorkand elsewhere face public outcries—andeven death threats—to provide their clientswith the fair trials that our U.S. Constitutionaims to ensure. Upholding the law can takea personal toll.

The Devil’s Advocate airs on 3-2 Tuesday,the 23rd at 10:00 p.m. Watch it on 3-1Wednesday, the 10th at 7:00 p.m.
