For more than 60 years, the Volkswagen Transporter has set the benchmark for quality, practicality and running costs in the commercial vehicle market. The sixth-generation model, which went on sale in the UK in September 2015, raises standards once more with a package that delivers improved efficiency, greater comfort and higher equipment levels.

The Transporter is Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ best-selling model in the UK and worldwide. Its predecessor – the T5 – achieved sales of more than one million units during its 15 year production run and with previous generation models factored in, the Transporter has clocked up a production total of more than 11.5 million since 1949.

Maximum flexibilityThe latest evolution of the Transporter is available with a range of body styles, from a simple panel van to a fully-equipped camper van. The panel van is offered with a short or long wheelbase and a low or high roof. The kombi seats up to six, the window van and shuttle can both accommodate up to nine people, while the Chassis cab provides the base for numerous conversions. Caravelle models can accommodate seven people and their luggage and incorporate 360° swivelling and folding seats on the first rear row and a three-seat bench at the rear. The California camper van completes the range, and remains the only factory-built camper on the market, with room for four to sleep in complete comfort.

Four gross vehicle weights are available (2,600, 2,800, 3,000 and 3,200 kg), with payloads of 745-1,301 kg, and load volumes of 5.8-9.3 m3. A low loading height of 566 mm (LWB)

makes it easy to access the load area, which is capable of accommodating two Euro pallets in short-wheelbase form. Customers opting for the long-wheelbase are able to fit three Euro pallets in with ease.

The interior has a luxurious feel, and features full integration of new touchscreen infotainment systems that offer smartphone connectivity and standard Bluetooth. Incorporating a host of useful touches, including optimised storage areas throughout, the cab area of the new Transporter raises the sector standards once again.

Broad engine range delivers on efficiency and powerThe Transporter panel van engine range consists of four 2.0-litre TDI Euro 6 engines with outputs of 84, 102, 150 and 204 PS. All models benefit from Volkswagen’s efficiency modifications as standard. These include low rolling resistance tyres, regenerative braking and Start/Stop systems, to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Shuttle and window van variants are available with the same four engine options. California models are available with a 150 PS or 199 PS diesel, with the same options available in the Caravelle.

For customers demanding the ultimate in efficiency, the Transporter range now features a standalone BlueMotion model. Equipped with additional efficiency features, it can return up to 51.4 mpg on the combined cycle.

All 84 PS and 102 PS engines are fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, with 150 PS, 199 PS or 204 PS units equipped with either a six-speed manual transmission as

standard or a seven-speed DSG automatic. Customers requiring the additional ability of four-wheel drive can opt for a model equipped with Volkswagen’s 4MOTION system.

Advanced safety systemsOccupant safety has always been a cornerstone of the Transporter range and the sixth-generation model takes protection to a new level. On top of Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP), driver and passenger front airbags and electric seatbelt tensioners, all sixth-generation Transporter models are equipped with Volkswagen’s Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Front

Assist, Driver alert and City Emergency Braking fitted as standard. Transporter customers also benefit from a range of optional safety systems, including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Light Assist.

Extensive range Three standard trims are offered: Startline, Trendline and Highline, along with Sportline and Edition models. All Transporter models come with Bluetooth, DAB and Composition Colour infotainment as standard. In addition, a comprehensive range of options and accessories is available to ensure each Transporter meets the customer’s requirements exactly.

Just as its five generations of predecessors have done, the sixth-generation Transporter seamlessly blends form with function. Combining bold shapes with intricate details, the front end styling of the sixth-generation model is in line with that of the latest Volkswagen passenger cars, and is instantly recognisable with bold, angular headlamps, grille emblem and crisp, horizontal lines. The headlights feature daytime running lights, below which the bumper includes the option of fog lights with integrated cornering-light function (standard on Highline) to illuminate the direction in which the vehicle is turning. The familiar radiator grille also comes with a new chrome strip that neatly meets the internal edges of the headlights to create a single flowing line across the front of the vehicle. The rear of the new Transporter continues the crisp, precise feel with new tail light clusters and a re-profiled bumper.

Transporter Panel VanSuch is the strength and rigidity of the Transporter’s body that it can be fitted with two sliding doors. A nearside door is standard, with a right-hand door available as an option. Electrically operated sliding doors are also available.

Every Transporter is available with a choice of either a large tailgate, or versatile rear wing doors – with the option to specify 250 degree opening angle hinges (LWB only). Both are available glazed or in solid metal for maximum security.

With a low load bed, maximum opening width of 1,473 mm and maximum load height of 1,940 mm, the Transporter is designed to make work easier. All panel van models provide a spacious load compartment with volumes ranging from 5.8 m3 for the short wheelbase low roof, to 9.3 m3 for the long wheelbase high roof. accommodated in long wheelbase models, while multiple load-lashing rings, sturdy painted load floors and a range of optional bulkheads and storage solutions mean that all requirements can be catered for.

Kombi and window vanThe kombi features a single front passenger seat (or optional two-seat bench) and adds to the panel van’s flexibility by offering removable rear seating for a further three passengers – all fitted with three-point seatbelts and height-adjustable head restraints. Access to the rear passenger area is through a single nearside glazed sliding door or optional second door, while at the rear there’s a glazed tailgate with heated window and wash-wipe.

Featuring a robust rubber floor covering throughout the cab and cargo area, as well as four load-lashing rings in the cargo area, the kombi’s flexible interior can be transformed in seconds from a comfortable five or six-seater, into a spacious delivery van.

The Transporter window van is fitted with two front seats as standard and offers all-round glazing for a brighter interior.

Transporter shuttle Capable of seating up to nine passengers, the Transporter shuttle features new easy-entry seating that allows passengers to enter with ease. Designed to offer passengers even higher comfort levels than the window van, it is equipped with moulded trim and roof headlining, high grade upholstery, heat insulating glass, rear heating systems, multiple air vents and sunblinds on rear side windows. The Transporter shuttle offers load volumes of 5.8 m3 for short wheelbase versions and 6.7 m3 for long wheelbase models.

Interior design The Transporter is packed with features that offer comfort, convenience and new levels of assistance for drivers and operators on the move. At the heart of the Transporter’s striking look is a dashboard that delivers both in terms of style and functionality. The layout further refines Volkswagen’s acclaimed ergonomics and adds a host of additional storage areas, including a clever cupholder with optional waste bin on the top rail. A USB port is standard across the Transporter range and is positioned adjacent to the lower storage tray on the passenger side.

Storage areas fitted as standard across the range include compartments in the driver and passenger doors, both capable of accommodating a 1.5-litre bottle and an A4 folder. In addition, there are storage pockets at each end of the dashboard beneath the air vents, an open storage space on top of the dashboard and others near the gearlever, as well as integrated within the overhead roof liner.

The centre console houses the ventilation controls along with a range of infotainment systems. DAB digital radio and Bluetooth are both fitted as standard across the range, with a line-up of new touchscreen navigation and audio systems available as options. Customers can enjoy seamless connectivity to their smartphones through the optional App-Connect feature that is available on the Composition Media system upwards. This offers three ways for customers to connect using Android Auto, Apple CarPlay or MirrorLink.

Another example of the Transporter’s attention to detail is its variety of three-spoke steering wheel options. Customers choosing the Highline model benefit from a leather multi-function version with controls for the infotainment and vehicle information system on the spokes.

The seats offer exceptional levels of comfort even on long journeys: the driver’s seat has adjustment for height, reach and rake, plus lumbar support as standard. A dual passenger seat with storage box and folding backrest (fixed backrest with optional bulkheads) is standard on the panel van, while a single passenger seat is standard on the kombi and window van – with a dual passenger seat available as an option.

CHASSIS CAB

Offering a versatile blank canvas for businesses which wish to create a load space to suit their specific needs, the Transporter Chassis cab combines design flexibility with a proven platform and trusted running gear. The Transporter Chassis cab is supplied with a bare chassis frame behind the cab, or can be ordered with a drop-side body directly from the factory. The latest Transporter Chassis cab range has been developed to complement the range of Volkswagen Crafter chassis and drop-side derivatives that are available through Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ ‘Engineered to Go’ programme.

Available in either short or long wheelbase forms and with the option of single cab or double cab variants, the Transporter Chassis cab can carry up to six passengers in double cab form and offers a payload capacity of up to 1,328 kg in single cab specification. The factory specification drop-side bodies offer versatile load space of either 5.2 m2 in single cab form or 4.2 m2 in double cab arrangement.

All Transporter Chassis cabs are powered by a 2.0 TDI 150 PS engine linked to a six-speed manual transmission and can be specified with an optional seven-speed DSG gearbox.

THE CARAVELLE

Few vehicles are able to challenge the high levels of practicality, durability and luxury the Caravelle offers. Already an established sector leader for refinement and quality, the latest-generation Caravelle raises standards further.

Seating up to seven, the Caravelle features a clever floor-mounted rail system that enables seats to be easily removed or repositioned, offering a huge number interior layout combinations. Even when fully loaded with passengers, the Caravelle’s rear space ensures occupants have plenty of space to store their luggage and still have ample room to relax.

All Caravelle models feature driver and passenger side sliding doors and offer a floor area of 4.3 m2 for short wheelbase and 5.0 m2 for long wheelbase models. The range consists of two models, SE and Executive, with both enjoying exceptionally high levels of safety, comfort and entertainment features.

Two engine options are available for the Caravelle; a 2.0 TDI unit with 150 PS and a 2.0 BiTDI unit with 199 PS. Both are Euro 6 compliant and deliver impressive fuel economy and low emissions. The Caravelle’s engines are also powerful and flexible – key qualities for vehicles that are built to work for a living. The 2.0 BiTDI 199 PS delivers smooth performance and generates a remarkable 450 Nm of torque.

Both engines are fitted with a seven-speed DSG as standard, while Volkswagen’s acclaimed 4MOTION four-wheel drive system can be specified on the 2.0 BiTDI 199 PS engine (see separate section for more details) All Caravelle models include BlueMotion Technology as standard – consisting of Start/Stop, low rolling resistance tyres and regenerative braking.

The Caravelle SE incorporates practicality, versatility and high levels of comfort. Robust enough for a wide range of uses, it is

still capable of providing passengers with a safe and luxurious ride. To optimise passenger comfort, the SE includes a deluxe headlining with ventilation strips and integrated swivelling reading lights, Pandu cloth upholstery, heat-reflective glass and roller blinds for the rear side windows. The SE also features twin power latching side sliding doors, Clayton or Devonport alloy wheels (depending on engine choice), front fog lights with cornering lights, body-coloured door mirrors, handles and bumpers and chrome detailing on the upper grille.

The range-topping Caravelle Executive delivers even more in the way of luxury and comfort. In addition to the comprehensive features found in the SE, the Executive adds sumptuous leather and Alcantara® upholstery, heated front seats, Climatronic three-zone automatic air conditioning and a deluxe instrument panel. Add to this a power latching tailgate, privacy glass, chrome exterior detailing and stylish 17” Cascavel two-tone Black/Silver diamond-turned alloy wheels and the Executive’s exterior becomes a perfect match for its opulent interior.

Continuing a camper van tradition which spans more than 60 years, the Volkswagen California remains the only vehicle in its class to be designed, engineered and built in-house. Since its launch in 2004, the California has become the benchmark vehicle in the camper van sector with more than 110,000 sold to date.

The California is available in two trim levels – Beach and Ocean – and with a choice of two engines with outputs of 150 PS and 199 PS (Beach 150 PS only). Both are EU6 compliant and feature BlueMotion Technology modifications. A 4MOTION four-wheel drive version is also offered in conjunction with the range-topping 199 PS TDI powerplant.

Entry to the California range starts with the Beach model which offers up to seven seats and sleeping space for four. The bench-seat easily folds to convert to a two-berth bed across the width of the vehicle, while a manual pop-up roof gives access to a further double bed. A fold-out table and chairs are cleverly stored in the sliding door and tailgate, while an optional integrated awning makes for a comfortable and practical camping experience. The Beach is available with a 2.0 TDI 150 PS engine that drives through a seven-speed DSG transmission as standard.

With the California Ocean, customers can choose from two diesel engines with either 150 or 199 PS, with both fitted with a seven-speed DSG gearbox as standard. 4MOTION four-wheel drive is available with the 199 PS unit and means that the ultimate ‘home from home’ can venture even further afield. The Ocean also adds an electro-hydraulic pop-up roof with LED lighting, plus a kitchenette with a two ring gas cooker, a fridge and sink. The latest generation California adds a host of safety, comfort and convenience features. These include a Driver Alert System, Brake Assist and an Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, as well as innovations such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Front Assist and City Emergency Braking for safer and more relaxed cruising. In the cabin the California gains a new

‘premium’ dashboard (optional on Beach) with wide centre console and car-like feel, plus the latest infotainment system, DAB digital radio, Bluetooth and new multi-function display. A new cupholder as well as new fabrics, leathers and plastics enhance the ambience inside.

Lane Change Assist – Side ScanAvailable as an option, Side Scan displays a warning signal on the exterior mirror as soon as one of its sensors detects a vehicle in a blind spot during a lane change.

Fog lights with integrated cornering lightsAvailable as an option and standard on Highline and California Ocean models, these help to illuminate curves and bends in the road ahead where the vehicle is turning.

Optical Parking System (OPS)The optical parking system (OPS) makes manoeuvring easier and safer. The OPS provides a graphic representation of the vehicle from above on the colour display of the infotainment system. By means of yellow and red signals the driver can then easily see whether the Transporter has a sufficient gap from any obstacles in front or behind it. The system gives an audible warning at the same time.

Parking sensorsThis system operates in a slightly simpler way to the Optical Parking System, but is equally effective at avoiding objects when moving at low speeds. Using a series of warning beeps, it helps the driver manoeuvre into a parking space. As the vehicle gets closer to the obstacle the frequency of the beeps increases. If the distance to the obstacle is less than 30 cm, the beep is continuous and an image in the multifunction display highlights using different colours the critical areas of proximity.

Rear-view cameraThis uses a wide-angle camera located in the rear number plate surround to display a clear view of the area behind the vehicle on the infotainment screen. Available as an option, the rear-view camera is only available when a tailgate is specified.

The sixth-generation Transporter features a range of advanced technologies in all key areas - from safety to in-car entertainment. Designed and engineered to provide drivers and occupants with maximum protection and comfort, the new technologies fitted to the Transporter make it the most advanced panel van Volkswagen has ever made. In addition, such safety features can reduce total cost of ownership for fleets through reduced accidents, downtime and driver productivity.

Driver assistance systemsThe Transporter is equipped with a number of, sector-first safety systems – all of which are activated in critical situations as a preventative measure. These are offered alongside a new range of innovative driver assistance systems designed to provide convenience and even greater levels of occupant protection.

Front AssistUsing a radar built into the front end of the Transporter, Front Assist recognises critical distances to the vehicle in front and helps to ensure safe stopping. In any dangerous situations the system warns the driver visually and audibly, as well as with a slight jolt of the brake. Front Assist reacts here in two stages: in the first instance the assistance system warns the driver with audible and visual signals of any vehicle in front driving slowly or suddenly braking and of the associated risk of collision. In parallel it gets the vehicle ready for emergency braking – by applying

the brake pads and alerting the brake assistant. If the driver fails to react to the warning, a one-off short jolt of the brake indicates in the second stage the looming danger of a collision and the brake assistant’s responsiveness is further increased. If the driver then hits the brakes, full braking power is immediately available. If the driver does not brake strongly enough, Front Assist increases the braking pressure to the required level, so that the vehicle comes to a stop before reaching the obstacle.

The system also includes the City Emergency Braking function, which provides assistance at low speeds of under 18 mph. If the driver fails to see or react to an obstacle, the system automatically applies the brakes and ensures that the speed of any collision is reduced. Ideally, it completely prevents the vehicle from running into the obstacle.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)Using the Front Assist radar sensor, ACC measures the distance to the vehicles in front and their relative speed. The driver sets the desired distance and speed via buttons on the multi-function steering wheel. Within its range, a sensor then constantly monitors the area in front of the vehicle. By pressing on the accelerator or brake, the driver can interrupt the ACC system, cruising speed can be resumed at any time by pressing the button on the steering wheel.

In combination with DSG transmission, the ACC system can also slow the vehicle down, for example in queues or traffic jam situations, to a complete stop. Depending on the situation, ACC starts up again automatically once the road ahead is clear.

Automatic Post-Collision Braking SystemThe Automatic Post-Collision Braking System automatically brakes the Transporter after it has been involved in an accident in order to reduce the risk or severity of a secondary collision. This innovative system is fitted as standard across the new Transporter range.

Triggering of the system is based on detection of a primary collision by the airbag sensors. Vehicle braking is limited by the ESP control unit to a maximum deceleration rate of 0.6g. This value matches the deceleration level of Front Assist and ensures that the driver can take over handling of the car even in case of automatic braking.

The driver can ‘override’ the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System at any time; for example, if the system recognises that the driver is accelerating, it is disabled. The system is also deactivated if the driver initiates hard braking at an even higher rate of deceleration. Essentially, the system applies the brakes until a vehicle speed of 6 mph is reached, so this residual vehicle speed can be used to steer to a safe location after the braking process.

High Beam AssistThis optional system automatically dips the headlights and prevents dazzle for oncoming vehicles, or vehicles travelling ahead. At night time and at speeds of above 37 mph, the system automatically switches the headlights to high-beam providing there is no oncoming traffic.

Driver Alert systemThis system monitors and registers deviation from normal steering patterns and uses visual and acoustic warnings to recommend that the driver takes a break. Standard across the Transporter range, the system monitors driving behaviour at speeds above 40 mph.

All-new infotainment systemsAt launch, the sixth-generation Transporter benefitted from a substantial upgrade in infotainment systems over previous models with a host of feature-packed audio and navigation systems. Every Transporter in the range is equipped with touchscreen infotainment as standard with the option to upgrade to larger systems featuring satellite navigation and smartphone integration. The current systems come in three levels of specification and two different display sizes: 5 and 6.33 inches.

All Transporter models are equipped with a Composition Colour radio system as standard. Featuring a 5-inch touchscreen, this advanced system includes DAB digital radio and Bluetooth connection for hands-free calling. It is equipped with an AUX-in connection, SD card slot, MP3-compatible CD player and a USB connection.

For owners wanting more features, the Composition Media system offers a larger 6.33-inch display and is coupled with a proximity sensor that is integrated across the area beneath the display. As a hand approaches the screen, functions appear on the screen and are readily available. When functional inputs are not required, the full screen can be seen, increasing ease of visibility. The display also responds to wiping and zooming gestures, as used in smartphones and tablets.

The Composition Media system is also available with Volkswagen’s pioneering App-Connect system that allows owners of Apple and Android devices to integrate their smartphones. The three options are:

Apple CarPlayThis allows owners to manage selected apps from their iPhone while on the move. The apps, which include maps, phone, news, music are presented on the main display and can also be activated and controlled via Apple’s Siri voice command system. In addition to the native Apple apps, CarPlay also supports other apps such as Spotify, Stitcher, and Skype.

Android AutoAs with CarPlay, Android Auto from Google enables owners to operate suitable apps safely from their smartphone using the Android operating system while driving.

Owners can operate everything by voice input, with a wide range of apps (including Google Play Music, Pandora or Spotify) being supported. Android Auto also supports third-party apps such as Joyride, Podcast Player, Stitcher, Umano, and Pocket Cast.

MirrorLinkAnother option for Android device owners, MirrorLink allows the owners of compatible Android handsets to use a wide range of native and third-party apps, by mirroring the screen of the mobile device on to the screen of the infotainment system. Apps supported include Shared Audio, Drive & Track, Parkopedia and Glympse.

Alternatively, buyers wishing to add navigation function without a smartphone can specify an optional Discover Media navigation module that adds full European sat nav functionality.

ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS

At the heart of the sixth-generation Transporter is a range of advanced diesel engines that combine strong performance with exceptional economy and low emissions. All engines in the Transporter range are Euro 6 compliant and are equipped with a number of features including Start/Stop, low rolling resistance tyres and regenerative braking to enhance economy and reduce emissions.

DIESEL ENGINES

2.0-litre TDI 84 PS Available in the Transporter panel van, kombi, shuttle and window van ranges, this four-cylinder, 2.0-litre, common-rail, direct-injection diesel engine delivers its maximum torque of 220 Nm between 1,250 - 2,500 rpm. This engine is equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox.

2.0-litre TDI 102 PSThis higher-powered 102 PS version of the four-cylinder, 2.0-litre, common-rail, direct-injection, turbocharged diesel engine is a popular option. Maximum torque of 250 Nm is available between 1,500 to 2,750 rpm. A five-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard. This engine is fitted to the Transporter BlueMotion model that returns 51.4 mpg and has CO2 emissions of 145 g/km.

2.0-litre TDI 150 PSThis benchmark unit delivers exceptional flexibility with 340 Nm of torque available from just 1,500 rpm. Delivering an exceptional balance of performance and refinement, this engine is also highly fuel efficient. Equipped with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, it can also be specified with a seven-speed DSG gearbox.

2.0-litre BiTDIThe range-topping engine offered across the Transporter range, the 2.0-litre BiTDI 204 PS engine combines strong performance with excellent fuel economy. This engine is rated at 199 PS in passenger carrying models (California, Caravelle, shuttle and window van).

TRANSMISSIONS

The sixth-generation Transporter is available with a variety of transmission options, all of which optimise the performance and economy of the engines to which they are coupled. All 84 PS and 102 PS engines are fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, with the 150 PS unit equipped with either a six-speed transmission as standard or a seven-speed DSG automatic. All 204 PS models are equipped with a seven-speed DSG as standard.

For operators needing the additional security of four-wheel drive, the Transporter 2.0 BiTDI 204 PS model is available with a 4MOTION system that is lighter and more efficient than the system it replaces.

DSG – Dual Shift GearboxThe Transporter’s DSG gearbox provides the best of both automatic and manual worlds with a fast and smooth gear change.

The DSG transmission operates with two automatic clutches – while one clutch is engaged, the second is primed to accept the drive for the next gear. Using this unique twin-clutch design, gear changes are completed in less than four hundredths of a second.

The driver can leave the transmission in ‘drive’ mode or elect to change gear manually, via the gear lever, pushing it forward to change up and pulling back to change down.

Euro 6 engines The Transporter Euro 6 engines meet emissions standards by applying a number of technologies.

Diesel Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) with AdBlue®The Volkswagen diesel SCR system uses AdBlue urea solution to convert nitrogen oxide into nitrogen and water. The filler neck for the AdBlue tank (which holds approximately 13 litres) is located below the filler cap for the fuel tank. AdBlue consumption depends on individual driving style, the system’s operating temperature and the ambient temperature that the vehicle is operated in.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)Both diesel and petrol engines fitted to the Transporter use exhaust gas recirculation as a technique to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. EGR works by recirculating a percentage of the engine’s exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders.

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) This device captures soot and particulates in a compartment located with the exhaust assembly. Once sensors detect that the DPF is full, the exhaust temperature increases to burn and remove soot.

ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS

4MOTIONThe Transporter is available with 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a seven-speed DSG gearbox. Available with the 2.0-litre TDI 150 PS and 2.0 BiTDI 204* PS engines, it automatically transfers power using a multi-plate clutch system to channel power to the wheels with the most grip. As much as 100 per cent can transfer to the rear wheels if necessary. In normal driving, 90 per cent of the engine’s power is delivered to the front wheels, with 10 per cent going to the rear. This results in characteristics familiar to drivers of front-wheel-drive vehicles, plus improved fuel efficiency compared with a permanent four-wheel-drive system.

The system uses an electronically controlled multiple-plate coupling or clutch that variably distributes the drive force between the front and rear axles – always to the axle with the best traction. A control unit handles the continuous adjustment and takes account of the slip, drive torques and information about driving dynamics (road speed, cornering, overrun or acceleration mode). And if appropriate, nearly 100 per cent of the drive torque can be directed to the rear axle.

Efficient technologies

Comprising three clever elements, modifications are fitted as standard to all Transporter models. They significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, which in turn leads to lower running costs and reduced environmental impact.

Start/stopAllows the driver to save fuel at traffic lights and in stationary traffic. With the vehicle in neutral and the clutch out, the engine automatically switches off, saving fuel and reducing emissions. To restart the engine, all the driver needs to do is depress the clutch. The system can be deactivated through a switch, if necessary. With the DSG gearbox, the Start/stop system is activated through the brake pedal.

The fifth-generation clutch system is lighter and reacts quicker than previous versions thanks to a number of design and engineering advances. These include a new centrifugal overflow valve that more accurately distributes torque between the front and rear axles. This means there is no need for a hydraulic fluid pressure reservoir, solenoid valve or filter, and the resultant weight saving is 1.4 kg.

Hill Descent ControlThis useful option, together with the optional 4MOTION all-wheel drive, allows drivers to negotiate steep slopes in a safe and controlled manner, thanks to the engine management’s ability to govern the engine speed and apply the brakes if necessary. The vehicle’s speed is maintained at a steady pace, without the driver needing to have additional input.

Mechanical differential lockThe mechanical differential lock is available for the rear axle together with the optional 4MOTION all-wheel drive. This helps to maintain traction when the Transporter encounters adverse conditions, such as rain, snow, mud or gravel.

Energy recuperation / battery regenerationWhen braking, the energy created as the engine turns is wasted. Volkswagen’s energy recuperation system uses some of that momentum to run the alternator and charge the battery. If the battery is well-charged, the engine has to do less work turning the alternator to keep it topped up. This cuts fuel use and can reduce emissions.

Low Rolling Resistance tyresFitting tyres with low rolling resistance means that the engine doesn’t have to work as hard to get the Transporter moving – or keep it moving. It all helps to save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions.

Although the first generation Transporter went on sale in Germany and the rest of Europe in 1950, right-hand drive versions were only available to special order until 1954 when they became standard production line models.

The standard right-hand drive Delivery Van featured twin cargo doors to the load area positioned on the nearside, where it could be accessed from the kerb. A double door model, featuring twin cargo doors on both sides was also available. The base model van in the UK was priced at £668 and the double door option cost £27 extra.

The Micro Bus had space for seven passengers plus the driver and the option of a sunroof, while the De Luxe model had the sunroof as standard, plus ‘all-round windows’, a full-width dashboard and the distinctive roof lights, dubbed ‘observationpanels in the roof’ in the contemporary brochure.The Kombi — short for Kombination —featured a flexible interior with removable seats, a forerunner of the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).

Constantly developed throughout its 17 year production run, Volkswagen extended the 1,192cc flat four to1,493cc in 1964 and added 12v electrics two years later. Production in Germany ended in July 1967.

Sitting on the same 2,400mm wheelbase as the T1, but 200mm longer, the T2 was an all-new vehicle.The platform was stiffened with thicker gauge steel, the front axle design of the Volkswagen 1600 saloon adapted to the van and a new rear-axle design introduced semi-trailing arms in place of swing axles.

Although the new 1,600cc engine was more powerful at 48bhp, and shared with the new Type 3 saloon, the maximum payload remained at 1,000kg and was known as a one-tonne on model. The longer body, however, had the benefit of boosting cargo carrying capacity to 5m3, a useful increase of 0.2m3.

The T2 ended up as the best-selling Transporter model with total production over 12 years eventually running to 3.9 million units. During its early production run it provided much-needed financial stability as Volkswagen adjusted in the early 1970s, in the wake of the first oil crisis and as its car range moved to front-wheel drive.

The T2 would, of course, also live on in production in Brazil latterly with a 1.4-litre water-cooled in-line engine. Brazilian production alone totalled 1.5 million units and the last model rolled down the production line on December 31, 2013.

Serious work on a replacement for the T2 kicked off in the early 1970s at a time when styling themes were moving towards flat surfaces and chiselled edges in place of gentle panel curves.

The new van was bigger which brought benefits to cargo carrying. More internal volume came from a slightly longer wheelbase (now 2,460mm compared to 2,400mm) and much wider body (1,845mm compared to 1,765mm). Overall the T3’s length increased to 4,570mm, an extra 150mm, while the overall height dropped 5mm to 1,950mm.

By 1981, Volkswagen was also ready to slot a diesel into the T3, the 1,588cc four-cylinder water-cooled in-line diesel being imported from the Golf, with the torque curve modified to suit the heavier van. The favourable 33mpg fuel consumption was a well received advance; the leisurely performance less so.

The last major variant arrived in 1986 in the shape of the four-wheel drive syncro model,launched to compete with the growing numbers of Japanese 4x4s that were selling well around the globe.

By the early 1990s, however, the T3 was ready to be replaced after total production of 1.7 million units.

After 13 years of T4 production, the fifth-generation Transporter went into production in 2003 at both the Hanover and Poznañ plants.

Designers and engineers created two separate skins for the Transporter Panel Van family and the passenger-oriented Caravelle family. The Caravelle was revealed first in March 2003 at the Geneva show, followed in April by the Transporter at Leipzig.

The push to develop the passenger-carrying Caravelle also resulted in a more extensive range of trim options and interior seating layouts. Offered in three trimlines, a floor-mounted rail system allowed the rear bench seat to be moved fore and aft and for additional tables or seats.

Also new in 2003 was the first Volkswagen-built California camper, now decked out with an electrohydraulic pop-up roof. Given the complexity of manufacturing the camper interior and roof, Volkswagen established a separate production facility in the Hanover suburb of Limmer.

In 2010, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles launched a facelifted T5 range. Revisions included a sharper appearance, a showcase of new diesel engines and DSG transmissions.

Engineering a ground-up new van family opened up opportunities for Volkswagen to widen its model offerings, and the fourth-generation Transporter was designed with short and long wheelbase options, panel van and chassis-cab bodies and three different payloads, which covered a much-wider range of the market.

The front-drive layout brought major advances in loading practicality with the 580mm high rear loading height feeding into a flat cargo area and accessed by a pair of wide-opening doors.

Not only was the body re-tooled for the T4, but the new model also came with a range of five new engines, developed from Volkswagen’s class-leading four and five-cylinder units. All were mounted transversely at the front, meaning an end to the distinctive exhaust rasp of the air- and water-cooled flat-fours that had powered the T1, T2 and T3 for 40 years.

The workhorse engine was a 60bhp 1.9 diesel, which cost-conscious operators specified, while those looking for more load-lugging ability chose the 76bhp 2.4-litre five-cylinder diesel. Three petrols were available – a 66bhp 1.8, 83bhp 2.0-litre and 108bhp 2.5-litre, the latter reserved for the range-topping Caravelle executive people carrier.
