The University of Sydney, Australia

Welcome

Belinda Hutchinson ACChancellor

Congratulations on your graduation!

Today it is with great pleasure and pride that we recognise and welcome you as a graduate of this university. Your graduation is a celebration of your significant achievements in attaining your degree. We wish you every success and look forward to your ongoing achievements.

As Australia’s first university, the University of Sydney has an international reputation as an outstanding teaching institution, as a centre of research excellence and as an active and engaged community leader. Throughout the world you will find fellow graduates involved in intellectual and creative leadership, including those who voluntarily contribute to the wider community.

We warmly welcome you as a member of our global alumni community and hope you will stay connected with the University through this network and visit us again in the future.

In universities throughout the world, graduation ceremonies are a rite of passage. They signal the end of one phase of your life and the beginning of another, no matter whether you are graduating with an undergraduate degree or a PhD. They mark the transition from membership of the student body to membership of an even larger community of alumni. They are a time of both nostalgia and optimism for the future.

We are really excited that we are finally able to offer in person graduation ceremonies. So it is with great pleasure that I welcome you and your family and friends here to the Great Hall today to celebrate this momentous occasion with us. You have worked hard to get here, and we are proud of your achievements.

I wish you all the best for the next step in your career. Remember, too, that you are welcome back at any time, to study with us again, to become an active alumni volunteer, or simply to visit your university.
