Thesis:
The development of guidelines for hearing parents parenting children with a hearing loss
Description:
Parenting children with a hearing loss presents hearing parents with unique parenting
challenges requiring an interdisciplinary approach. As a new area of research in the fi eld,
Ronel had an opportunity to develop guidelines for hearing parents parenting children with
a hearing loss. Through a mixed sequential explanatory design, a two-phased study was
conducted. Guidelines for parents included:1) early intervention programmes for hearing
parents and children; 2) the need for social and emotional support to deal with the emotional
impact of the diagnosis on all in the family; 3) access to comprehensive and unbiased
resources and information; 4) unbiased support for communication intervention options for
their children. This study allows for an interdisciplinary approach to help the family.

Thesis:
The development of a nutrition education programme for parental feeding styles
and practices
Description:
Children of obese parents are more likely to be overweight, often related to incorrect eating
habits. Parental feeding practices, styles, and nutritional knowledge can infl uence the child’s
eating patterns and overall health and wellbeing. Melissa developed a nutrition education
programme for primary caregivers to enhance or change their feeding styles and practices.
Through the application of a mixed method study, the programme was developed with
inputs from both primary caregivers and health experts. It was designed as a 7-week face-
to-face facilitated course aimed at improving knowledge in nutrition and food preparation,
exploring best practices for parental feeding styles and practices, and providing a balanced
diet in a resource constrained environment for the family.

A model for naturopathy within the South African healthcare system
Description:
Even though naturopaths have been found practicing in over 22 countries, most are not part
of the public healthcare system. This study explored the development of naturopathy in
South Africa, the identity and role of practitioners, their scope of practice and curriculum to
provide a foundation for evaluating the role of naturopathy (where such integration is
appropriate) into the South African health system. Within the context of a global increase in
preventable non-communicable diseases the study argues for a shift from a curative to a
preventative model of healthcare and the integration of complementary medicine and
specifi cally naturopathy into such a health system for South Africa.

The development of a return to work intervention programme for individuals with cardiac
diagnoses in the Western Cape, South Africa
Description:
Cardiovascular disease is amongst the top causes of mortality in South Africa. This study
aimed to design an intervention programme that could enhance the return to work for
individuals with cardiovascular disease. The methodology included the use of a cross
sectional survey, a qualitative study, a scoping review and lastly a Delphi study. The results
concluded that only 47.6% of the participants were able to return to work (RTW), thus proving
a need for intervention to improve the return to work rate of individuals with cardiac disease.
The outcome of this study was the development of a programme called Heart Return to
Work Intervention Programme. This programme is the fi rst of its kind and has the potential to
enhance the RTW rate of individuals with cardiac disease.

A case study for intergenerational transmission of parenting in Genadendal: Developing guidelines
Description:
Parenting practices are known to infl uence the development of children and family functioning.
However, the extent to which these generational infl uences stretch, and the continuities
brought forth between generations has not been adequately studied. This study explored
intergenerational parenting in Genadendal for developing guidelines for parents and
practitioners across three generations. A case study research design with mixed methods was
used to implement the study. Using an Ecological Systems Framework, the guidelines were
developed to improve and promote parenting competence across generations while
considering the infl uence of traditional cultural practices, family values, the parenting by
grandparents and the need for father involvement so that child behaviour improves.

Sport for Development and Peace in Communities: A case study of the ‘Sport for Peace
and Social Transformation Programme’ in Uasin Gishu, Kenya
Description:
Tenuous ethnic relations, violence and patterns of displacements across Kenya pose an
existential challenge to peace, livelihoods and sustainable development. Erick Mariga examined
the role of Sport for Peace and Social Transformation (SPST) Programme in Uasin Gishu County.
The study made use of Galtung’s 3Rs Confl ict transformation theory, linking it with Sport for
Development and Peace (SPD). Key fi ndings of the study include the awareness of challenges
caused by the infl uence of partisan and ethnical politics. The importance of political will,
enforcement of rule of law and the leading role of government was underscored if the goal of
sustainable development and peace was to be realised. The study made recommendations for
increased support from NGOs and private sector towards SDP programmes.

Development of an approach for measurement and monitoring of the continuum of care
for maternal health in the South African health system
Description:
The continuum of care is a public health framework for providing comprehensive maternal
health care at the community and health system level, and according to needs throughout
the lifecycle. Mamothena developed and tested a novel model for measuring and monitoring
the continuum for maternal health in South Africa, called the adequacy model. The model
guided the assessment of service provision, selection and evaluation of indicators, and
development of a performance tracking index that can be used at district and provincial
levels. The research used a mixed method design to strengthen understanding of continuum
and make recommendations for maternal health research and practice. The analytical
framework developed in this study can also be adapted within other LMIC contexts to
improve performance measurement and monitoring.

A systematic approach to improve rational medicine use in Swaziland
Description:
Irrational use of medicines is a global problem that results in mismanagement of patients,
wastage of resources and public health problems. Nondumiso assessed patterns of
medicine use, identifi ed the reasons for this and tested a short intervention (audit and
education) in public health facilities in eSwatini. The research documented widespread
irrational use of medicines, such as polypharmacy and high antibiotic use, including amongst
patients with non-communicable diseases. Factors contributing to irrational use of medicines
were found at multiple levels - system, provider and patient - and the limited intervention
was not able to sustainably shift practices. Achieving rational medicines use will require a
mix of interventions involving a range of system players and levels.

Recommendations for the development of a framework for radiological imaging studies
during implant therapy in South Africa
Description:
This multifaceted study was conceptualized in order to contribute to the pool of evidence
available regarding the many factors aff ecting imaging during implant therapy (IT) in SA. The
specifi c aim was to provide recommendations for the development of a framework for
radiological imaging during IT. This was achieved by comprehensive narrative reviews of
available imaging guidelines and modalities, a nationwide survey of frequently used
radiographic techniques, assessing the dimensional accuracy & radiation doses of diff erent
radiographic techniques, and the effi cacy of a dose reduction novel head shield was evaluated.
The outcomes of these investigations were consolidated in order to suggest recommendations
aimed at “low-dose” imaging protocols in SA and regional developing countries.

Hungry for knowledge, hungry for bread: Realising the Right to Food of Students in South
African Tertiary Institutions
Description:
This study relates to the right to ffood of students in South African tertiary institutions and
notes that students in South African tertiary institutions encounter challenges with regard
to food security. It notes that students from vulnerable and marginalised backgrounds tend
to experience hunger and food insecurity more than other groups. The study argues that
high levels of poverty, inequality and soaring inflation in the country have aggravated the
living conditions of students from vulnerable and marginalised backgrounds. All the
examiners affirmed that the study has made a significant contribution to knowledge
about the challenges of hunger and food insecurity in South African tertiary institutions.

Forced sterilization as a continuing violation of human rights in Africa: possibilities
and challenges
Description:
This study examines the implications of the doctrine of continuing violation of rights for the
reproductive rights of women who have experienced forced sterilisation. Determining if
forced sterilisation has consequences that create a continuing violation of treaty rights of the
aff ected person presents real diffi culties considering that it violates several rights such as
the right to dignity, right against torture, non-discrimination amongst others. The study
argues that to some extent forced sterilisation could be accommodated under the continuing
violation principle. All the examiners express the view that the study has made a signifi cant
contribution to knowledge and understanding of the principle of continuing violation of
rights in Africa.
