TAX BREAK

A few weeks ago we had a little “end of life” chat where we

discussed all sorts of things pertaining to planning for the inevitable. One of those things was a tax break. Many people were asking about it, so I thought I’d spell it out more closely.

If you are one of the 68 percent of American households who takes the standard deduction on their tax form, then under the

current tax laws, your charitable giving may not be tax-deductible.

As any good Catholic knows, being charitable is a reward in itself. Tax incentives should not be the sole reason for our giving, but let’s face it, there are financial effects to this new tax

reality. If you take into account your tax deductions as part of your financial plan, charitable giving plan or budget process, it is time to consider a change in strategy.

If you are currently taking a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRAs, you should consider making your

charitable donations to Church and other charities through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). A QCD is a tax-smart plan that allows you to transfer any amount tax-free — up to $100,000 per year — from your IRA directly to a qualified

charity. It is only available to IRA owners who are 70½ years of age or older. The federal government requires people age 70 and a half or older to withdraw a portion of their IRA savings

every year, called a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), or they get hit with a hefty fine. Any amount processed as a QCD counts towards your RMD, satisfies your charitable intentions,

and can save money on your taxes today and in the future by reducing the taxable amount of your IRA distribution—while lowering your adjusted gross income and taxable income.

For example, a 71-year-old couple has an existing annual RMD between the two of them of $24,000. They can direct $5,000 to

a charity of their choice as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from an IRA. This will have positive tax benefits:

• By reducing their annual taxable income by $5,000

• Because they still get to claim the same $26,550 standard

deduction

• If the couple is in the new 24% tax bracket, they would have saved $1,200 in federal taxes, and potentially more in state

tax savings.

This is a potential game-changer for folks who choose the

standard deduction.

You can make your 2019 and even your 2020 charitable

donations using the benefits of the QCD — no taxes on the distribution which satisfies your RMD, no worries about whether to itemize or take the standard deduction, and best

yet, your contributions go directly to Church or the charities of your choice.

Contact your financial advisor for an explanation of the benefits of this program, and to help you set up your QCD charitable plan.

even a small amount of gluten, please let the Sacristan know before Mass that you will enter the Sacristy just before Communion to receive the Precious Blood. They will ensure

NEW PARISHIONER WELCOME!

It was a pleasure meeting Paul & Debbie Gries at the recent

new parishioner welcome. This couple comes to us from

Loyal, Wisconsin. Paul & Debbie have three daughters and a

son, all are married. They also have eight grandchildren, six

of them live in Minnesota (four here in Delano and two in

Moundsview) and two grandchildren live out in Denver.

Paul & Debbie attended Saint Anthony's Parish in Wisconsin

and really enjoyed that there was a school attached to the

parish. They joined St. Max because three of their

grandchildren attend St. Max School.

This couple stays very busy. Paul is retired but works a bit at

Tractor Supply Co in Greenfield. Debbie is a financial analyst

for Ascension Health System which is the largest Catholic

health system. Paul enjoys walking and wine making in his

free time, while Debbie enjoys singing, quilting/sewing and

traveling. Of course, they also enjoy time with family.

Paul & Debbie are interested in participating in a book club/

Bible study, women's nights and fall festival. Debbie is also

interested in volunteering with the sewing needs here at the

parish.

Please join me in welcoming this lovely couple to our parish

family.

Winter Gardening!

The 5th-graders at St. Max are learning how to grow

plants in a hydroponic plant tower. Everyone made a

hypothesis regarding what would happen when growing

plants in the plant tower. Students learned how the

hydroponic plant tower works with a special lighting and

watering system. Students planted lettuce, lavender,

rosemary, peppermint, spearmint, and basil. Students have

been measuring the pH of the water, filling the tank with

filtered water, and making weekly observations of plant

growth. Everyone hopes to be able to share what is

growing with students, staff, and their families in the

upcoming months.

Thanks to our confirmation students for packing and counting the coats and socks you all donated for the homeless. Our total collected this year for coats was 258. That is up almost 60 coats more than last year. GREAT JOB! We collected 1103

pairs of socks. They were picked up and delivered to the streets last weekend. Thank you for being the hands of Christ!

How beautiful the experience of love for God and neighbor, a fire deep within! How disheartening when love suddenly cools and our souls grow dark, our prayer arid. How painful when

misunderstanding, even rejection, comes our way, sometimes from those we least expect. For all such “seasons of the soul,” an inspiring fellow-pilgrim is the poet and mystic John

of the Cross. As a young Carmelite, he was recruited by Teresa of Ávila for her Discalced (“barefoot,” evangelical poverty) Carmelite reform, striving to renew the Church from within after the Protestant Reformation had led

countless religious away. John suffered unspeakably harsh abuse, even imprisonment, from friars who rejected this reform. Yet during these times of deepest suffering, John

composed spiritual masterpieces that still guide souls to God, their titles reflecting his own painful yet ultimately victorious journey: from The Dark Night of the Soul through The

Ascent of Mount Carmel to his Spiritual Canticle and The Living Flame of Love. John summarized his spirituality simply: “Put love where there is no love, and you will find love.”
