Curé of Ars -2- June 9, 2019

THANK YOU: This weekend The Parish Family of Curé of Ars offers our collective thank you to Mrs.

Kathleen (Lee) Hlavacek for her 16 years of service to us as our Director of Religious Education! To commemorate

Lee’s retirement, she has asked that the three pastors she has worked with offer the Pentecost Family Mass today! So,

we joyfully welcome back Father Jim Mannion (the 10th pastor and a

vocation from this parish) and Father Charles Mangano (the 11th pastor).

Today we welcome back Father Jim as the celebrant of the Mass and Father

Charles as our homilist. Lee’s requested theme of the Mass is – “standing

on the shoulders” as partners in faith! What a perfect day to celebrate that,

as we pray for the Holy Spirit to renew us continually with God’s abiding

presence! Thank you and congratulations to Lee for a ministry – well done,

much appreciated, and joyfully celebrated!

WELCOME: On August 1st of this year, The Parish Family of Curé of Ars joyfully

welcomes Mrs. Ellen Zafonte as our new Director of Parochial Faith Formation, including

Religious Education! Lee will be introducing Ellen at the Pentecost Family Mass today. Mrs.

Zafonte will be directing our Religious Education Program, as well as using her acquired

knowledge to be an asset to our parish at all levels of Faith Formation from “womb to tomb.”

It just so happens that Ellen and Lee are good friends and were students together at the Seminary of

the Immaculate Conception when they studied for the Master of Arts in Theology degree.

Likewise, I have known Ellen for over 30 years from her home parish of St. Agnes Cathedral in

RVC. She brings her vast experience, joyful personality and zealous service of the church to Curé of Ars! I know you

join me in welcoming Ellen to our beautiful community of faith!

FORMED: Please see the very important message on Page 13 from Mrs. Trisha Williams about “FORMED.” Your

opinion to her about the use and value of “FORMED” (to you) would be appreciated so that we can evaluate the

future use of this resource.

INVITATION: You are invited to Father Ken Grooms first Masses at 11:30am and 1:00pm on Sunday, June 23rd.

There will be a reception following the 1:00pm Mass in the Msgr. Leonard Hall. All are welcome!

SUMMER SPLASH: Today at all the Sunday Masses, Mrs. Anne Adragna will speak about the Summer Splash

Early Bird Drawing. To be in the Early Bird drawing, please purchase your tickets by Friday, June 21st. The drawing

will take place after the 11:30am Mass on Sunday, June 23rd. Forms are available at the doors of the church or on

Page 11.

PICNIC: Are you interested (and will you help out and/or attend) a parish summer picnic? Last year, we only had

very few signed up and had to cancel it due to the small number. Please let us know by emailing Rosemary with the

subject: Picnic, at [email protected] before June 24th.. It’s up to you!

NEW FEAST: Tomorrow, only for the second time, we celebrate a new feast day – Mary,

Mother of The Church. Pope Francis initiated this liturgical celebration last year, which is a

“moveable feast” that falls on the Monday after Pentecost. “The Church is feminine,” Pope

Francis said, “she is a mother. When this trait is lacking, the Church resembles merely “a

charitable organization, or a football team”; when it is “a masculine Church,” it sadly becomes “a

church of old bachelors,” incapable of love incapable of fruitfulness.” Amen!

~ Pentecost Sunday ~

Dear Parishioners:

A letter from the Pastor

Fr. Frank

Curé of Ars -3- June 9, 2019

Our pastor, Msgr. Francis J. Caldwell, his brother priests, Fr. Henry Leuthardt, Fr. Zachary Callahan, and our Pastoral Team welcome you to Curé of Ars. If you are visiting us for the first time, you are our honored guests and we pray that you will consider making Curé of Ars your church home. We are here to assist you in your spiritual growth and maturity as together we give glory to God through our worship, prayer and service in the name of Jesus Christ. We are committed to the fullness of Roman Catholic teaching and to the promise of salvation that the Church offers to all believers. May God accomplish a great work in you among us.

Welcome!Welcome!Welcome!

Parish Registration - We welcome all new members of our parish family. We ask all parishioners to welcome and invite new neighbors and their families to become a part of Curé of Ars. Parish Registration booklets are available in the Rectory and at the doors of the Church. Once completed, please submit your form to the Rectory so we can finalize your registration process. You will receive a visit from a Parish Welcoming Committee member shortly thereafter.

Baptism - Parents wishing to present a child for Baptism should be registered members of Curé of Ars Parish. Parents are required to have a Baptism Preparation Interview with a member of the Pastoral Team and attend a Baptism Class. Please call the Rectory for an appointment. Baptisms usually take place on the first and third Sundays of the month from 2:30pm - 3:30pm.

Marriage - Those wishing to be married in Curé should consult with a member of the Pastoral Team before any other arrangements are made. A minimum of six months is needed for marriage preparation. Pre-Cana and FOCCUS are required for all couples. Weddings may be scheduled on Fridays at 5:30pm (or an agreed upon time), on Saturdays at 11:15am, 1:00pm or 2:30pm and Sundays at 4:00pm.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) - An ongoing process of formation for those who ever wonder if they should become “Catholic”. If interested please call for a meeting with a member of the Pastoral Team.

Mission Statement - We welcome all and exclude none,

as we are inspired by the wisdom of our

patron, St. John Vianney, the Curé of Ars,

who said: “This is our glorious duty, to

pray and to love.” Therefore, we are

committed to continue the mission of

Jesus Christ, to proclaim the Gospel and

love one another as He loves us.

PARENTS: KEEP WATCH

PLANNED PARENTHOOD IS COMING FOR YOUR CHILDREN

PLANNED PARENTHOOD PROVIDES BIRTH CONTROL & ABORTION

TO CHILDREN AGE 13 YEARS & UP

Wait for it . . . .

WITHOUT PARENTAL CONSENT OR KNOWLEDGE

By Deborah M. Johnson In this age of technology it's not difficult to find the slithering arm of Planned Parenthood - reaching out to grab your

children. They are in the public schools lecturing about sex (shiver!) and have “proudly” developed a program for very

young children called “Roo, the sexual health chatbot - available 24 hours.” All the information is out there. It's in the

schools, it's on the net.

All it takes is a simple Google search, just like the one I did. I'd like to share some ”teen” information I found (also readily

available to your daughters (and sons). Why do they offer it? Because there's a market . . . and it's lucrative. Please feel free

to take multiple copies of the bulletin & share this crucial information with others.

Excerpts From Planned Parenthood of NYC”s Website:

TEENS’ RIGHTS TO SERVICES & CONFIDENTIALITY “Planned Parenthood of New York City is here to help you! All teens are welcome at our health centers, no matter

how old you are, your ability to pay, or your immigration status. You can book an appointment online for most services.”

“We can get you started on hormonal birth control methods (pills, shot, patch, ring) without needing an exam first.”

“PPNYC respects your right to confidentiality. NYS law allows teens to consent to confidential family planning services

and reproductive health care, including abortion. This means you can make an appointment & get any of these services at

our health centers without asking your parents' permission:

*All types of birth control *Emergency contraception (also known as the “morning after pill” although you can take it up to 5 days after

unprotected sex)

*Pregnancy testing

*STI counseling, testing & treatment

*HIV/AIDS counseling & testing

*ABORTION - MEDICAL AND SURGICAL “AFTER YOUR VISIT, YOUR PARENTS WILL NOT BE TOLD ABOUT THE CARE(!) YOU RECEIVED IF YOU

DO NOT WANT TO TELL THEM.” The website goes on to tell them not to worry if they can't afford it, to come anyway

and funding will be found.

Please work and pray to defund Planned Parenthood and close all local clinics. Education about their so-called “services”

is key - it is crucial that we share the truth with others and protect innocent children from this vile organization. Planned

Parenthood is sexualizing children, murdering babies and undermining parental authority. Ask yourself this: Why is our tax

money still funding them? To learn more about defending the unborn and protecting the children from Planned Parenthood

please call Ted at “Center of Life” Catholic store: 516:409-6201.

Weekly ReflectionWeekly ReflectionWeekly Reflection

Locked doors and locked hearts do not deter the

risen Lord. Literally and figuratively, the apostles

were locked behind closed doors. They were locked

in the upper room, fearful of the authorities. They

were also locked inside their own fear, anger, guilt,

and grief. And Jesus broke through it all. He

appeared in their midst and shared with them the first

gifts of the resurrection: forgiveness and peace. He

commissioned them to share those gifts with others.

He sent them out, as the Father had sent Him.

The peace of the risen Lord, and all the gifts of His

Spirit, would unlock the door of the upper room - and

also unlock the disciples’ hearts and lives. We see

this in Acts, where the peace and joy they have

received are communicated to others: Jews and non-

Jews, strangers from many countries, and people of

many languages. The gifts the apostles received were

sharable - more than that, contagious - and they were

available for everyone. The apostles spoke a

universal language on Pentecost: the language of

love, peace, forgiveness, and hope - the story of

God’s might deeds and the call to discipleship. This

call could be heard and understood by everyone: a

call into relationship with Christ and with one

another.

The faithful who are homebound are deprived of

their rightful and accustomed place in the Eucharistic

community. In bringing communion to them the

Minister of Communion represents Christ and

manifests faith and charity on behalf of the whole

community toward those who cannot be present at the

Eucharist. The reception of communion is not only a

privilege but also a sign of support and concern

shown by the Christian community for its members

who are homebound. If you would like to join this very important ministry and become a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound, please email Fr. Frank at [email protected] or call 516-623-1400 Ext. 103.

Catholics for Freedom of ReligionCatholics for Freedom of ReligionCatholics for Freedom of Religion

Banning “God”

from Graduation Speeches

More than two centuries after Freedom of

Religion and Freedom of Speech were

enshrined in the First Amendment to the

Constitution, these rights are often in the news during

Graduation season.

* A H.S. graduating senior in PA, whose faith is a

driving force behind everything she does, was surprised

when the school tried to force her to leave out

any reference to her religious beliefs from her

graduation speech. Determined not to be silenced for her

beliefs, she asked First Liberty Institute for help. They sent

a letter to the school district reminding them that the

student's remarks were her own “private speech, not

“government speech,” and as such, could not violate the

First Amendment Establishment Clause. The letter also

cited the landmark Supreme Court decision which held that

students do not “shed their constitutional rights to freedom

of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.”

* A university in CO reversed its decision to remove a

Bible verse from the graduation speech of a nursing

student selected by her classmates to address the

class. Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) sent a letter to

the school stating, “It is ... well established that university

officials cannot silence speech simply because it expresses

a particular viewpoint, including a religious one.” The

ADF attorney noted that while universities often believe

they are “fulfilling the commands of the First Amendment”

when barring religious speech, “they're actually violating

it.”

* An IL valedictorian was told just ten minutes before

graduation that he would not be permitted to deliver

his speech because it was too religious. The all-star

student was told to deliver generic comments devoid of the

true inspiration for his academic performance. “It was

terrible. I felt like I wanted to cry... For that to be taken

away ...”

“These school officials ruined the only high school

graduation Sam will ever know,” said First liberty

Institute. “How many more graduations have to be

ruined before school officials will learn that the First

Amendment protects student remarks at graduation?” (washingtontimes.com, 5/23/18; dailysignal.com, 5/16/18;

firstliberty.org, 6/13/17; godtv.com, 5/16/19)

“If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it

is the responsibility of every American to be informed..”

The Fourth Pillar of Christian Stewardship: Service

One could argue that there is no better quote about Christian service in the Bible than the one stated

above. We are called to evangelize and there is no better way to do this than to show love to all.

If there is to be more Christians in the world than it can only happen through our service to others.

With so much suffering in the world, there are so many ways

available for us to go out and help others.

You can make a difference right in your own parish or in a Diocesan ministry.

Bring a senior to Mass.

Talk to your pastor to find out how you can be of service.

Food pantries, soup kitchens and religious education programs are there waiting

for us to get involved.

You can make a huge difference in someone’s life. Think about that; if you donated

a few hours of your time to a certain service project or opportunity, you could

brighten the days of an individual who needed it. Let us make Long Island a better

place for someone today.

Formed Stewardship

content of the week

Intercession Help us Lord to realize that we need to put our Faith into action.

Ignite our hearts so that we may show love to all of our brothers

and sisters. In Your Name we pray…

Living Stewardship We are called to evangelize, and what better way is there to do

that than to love. Show love today to all you encounter, that is

the simplest and easiest way to love. We can go a step further

by helping those who need love the most.

Join us, June 22 - June 29, as we pray, reflect, and take action on religious liberty, both here in this country and abroad. In the pilgrimage of this life, hidden with Christ in God and free from enslavement to wealth, they aspire to those riches which remain forever and generously dedicate themselves wholly to the advancement of the kingdom of God and to the reform and improvement of the temporal order in a Christian spirit. Among the trials of this life they find strength in hope, convinced that "the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come that will be revealed in us" (Rom. 8:18). -Apostolicam actuositatem, 4

“Religious freedom certainly means the right to worship God, individually and in community, as our consciences dictate. But religious liberty, by its nature, transcends places of worship and the private sphere of individuals and families.” (Pope Francis—Address at Independence Hall, Philadelphia, September 26, 2015)
