CHINESE STUDENTS HAND BOOK

PREFACEThis is the tenth edition of the HAND BOOK OF THE

CHINESE STUDENTS IN U, S. A. since the first printing in 1924.

The Hand Book has a three-fold purpose. The first, to inform all Chinese students with the names, addresses, subjects, and other ' activities of their fellow students, and to assist American friends, research workers, and Chinese, both here and at home with historical records, vocational recommendations and references. The second, to facilitate communication between newcomers and old residential students, between undergraduates and their alumnae friends, between students seeking facts, opinions and other information from authoritative persons; and to acquaint students with their “comrades,” and with other students taking similar courses. The third and last, to unify the 1,305 Chinese students now distributed among 123 institutions throughout the United States.-

The sources from which this text have been compiled are: (1) Offices of the Registrar of the various Institutions; (2) Bocal students’ clubs; (3) Catalogues from Institutes; (4) Individual correspondence; (5) Personal interviews, and (6) Chinese Educational Mission, Washington, D. C. Due to the fact that addresses are constantly changing, and that some of the institutes and clubs did not respond to the questionnaire, the Hand Book does not claim perfection. If, however, your name or that of your friend does not appear in the Hand Book, please notify the Editor, and such information will be inserted in the next issue.

This Hand Book is free to every Chinese student and will be mailed to the address given in this book.

We wish to express oui' warm thanks to the officers of the local clubs, the Registrars of the institutions and the Chinese Educational Mission. We are also greatly indebted to the advertisers who have given us financial support. To all our fellow students we extend our best wishes for their academic success and experiencial progress.

Greetings

from

His Excellency, Dr. Sao-Ke Alfred Sze, Chinese

Minister fo the U. S.

Confucius says: "The rising generation should be treated with a certain degree of awe; for who can tell what the future has in store for them?"

Our great sage, therefore, inculcates proper consideration for youth. It is upon the coming generation that China, relies for her future greatness. The students of today will occupy positions of responsibility and power tomorrow. What China needs most is trained men. It is a great pleasure to me to find thousands of our students in American schools and colleges, preparing themselves for the work they have to do when they go back to China. They all have my best wishes.

CHINESE STUDENTS HAND BOOK

MESSAGE FROM DR. HAWKLING YEN, CHARGE d’AFFAIRES

It affords me a source of gratification to know that the Hand Book of the Chinese Students in U. S. A. will continue to appear for the year 1933. The mere continuation of the publication of this handy book appears to me to attest to Its usefulness and its fulfillment of a need which all Chinese students both here and in China have constantly felt.

It also gives me great pleasure to be reminded that there are as many as fifteen hundred Chinese students—girls as well as boys—now prosecuting their higher education in the States. They are following various lines of college work and are scattered among 123 institutions in different parts of this country; and from the statistics compiled one is further gratified to find that the popularity of selected courses has been gradually shifting from philosophical or literary subjects to the studies of applied sciences.

The mere fact of the presence of so many students in various parts of America not only signifies the acquisition of sclentilc knowledge by the eager minds of young Chinese who on their return to their native land are bound to exercise a great influence in bringing their scientific knowledge to account when China is just beginning to become mechanized, but also means a good deal of personal contacts between these Chinese students and their American friends in different localities of this country, which accounts, it appears to me, to a great extent, for the sympathy and good feeling subsisting between the two peoples.

The Committee responsible for the edition of the Hand Book should be congratulated for the successful effort they have made in placing the facilities at the service of not only the Chinese students but also those who care to know something about them. I particularly welcome the emphasis which the editor placed in that this Hand Book signified ’•"*ty, to which I should like to add that It also signified constructiveness, both of which should be our guiding principles especially at this moment.

HAWKLING YEN.
