“THEOLOGY ON TAP” HAS MOVED ONLINE! To ensure everyone’s safety while still bringing young adults (or any interested person) together to hear and interact with great Catholic speakers, the Archdiocese of Chicago is sponsoring an online version of Theology on Tap. This is in place of the usual summer speaker series hosted by parishes across the city and beyond, including our own cluster of North Center parishes with St. Matthias, St. Benedict and St. Andrew sharing a series at Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro. The series is taking place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on consecutive Wednesdays via Facebook Live. The series theme is Voices on the Periphery. Hearing from local community organizers will help participants focus on listening to and amplifying the voices of those who may not have the biggest platform in our society. Access the Facebook Live links via pvm.archchicago.org/theology-on-tap/2020-series-voices-on-the-periphery. Past presentations have been recorded and remain available at the same links; upcoming presentations include opportunities for group discussion and questions.

• July 1: Kolbe House Ministry to those in Prison with Dr. MaryClare Birmingham of Kolbe House • July 8: Unlocking Communities and Its Ministry to Haiti with Josh Goralski of Unlocking Communities • July 15: The Holy Spirit Amid COVID-19 & Racism with Luana Lienhart, OFS (Secular Franciscan) • July 22: Caring for the Homeless in Chicago with Father Ed Shea, OFM from St. Peter’s in the Loop

The movement from blindness to sight is a Gospel narrative that is also a call to conversion. Father Ed will invite us to take seriously the call to conversion, even in the smallest of ways, in our own individual lives. “May the eyes of our hearts be enlightened” (Ephesians 1:17).

• July 29: Turning a Curse into a Blessing with Wayne Smith God was waiting for Wayne at the bottom of the proverbial “barrel” and drew him into the Catholic Church and a relationship with Jesus Christ. Wayne will discuss coming to this faith after growing up Jewish; how losing his sight and becoming disabled has changed his life; where God was found in the midst of his suffering and loss; what the Church and society have done to help persons with disabilities and what more they could do moving forward.

July 19, 2020 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three RENEW MY CHURCH: UNION NEARS The merger of Queen of Angels Parish and our neighbors at St. Matthias Parish will take place on August 1. Monsignor Jim Kaczorowski has been appointed to be the Pastor for the new parish to be formed from the union of Queen of Angels and St. Matthias parishes. As of August 1, the two parishes will be seen as one entity by the Archdiocese, with one Pastor and one set of records. With the help of our Pastor, parish leaders and staff, the unification of our people, ministries and operations will develop over time and as possible during this pandemic. Temporarily, the new parish will be known as Queen of Angels and St. Matthias Parish until we can hold a process to name the new parish. At the last in-person meeting we had for Renew My Church before all buildings closed down, it was agreed that an important step in joining the two parishes is for parishioners involved in similar ministries to get to know each other. Though this work is made more difficult by the pandemic and social distancing requirements, phone calls and video conferencing can make it possible to take some first steps. Leaders of parish groups at Queen of Angels who would like to be in touch with their counterparts at St. Matthias are asked to contact the parish office at 773-539-7510 or [email protected]. Not all groups will have a current one-to-one correspondence, but we will do our best to match ministries together so that our parishioners can get to know each other.

Page Four Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 19, 2020 OUR CHURCH HAS REOPENED! The Archdiocese of Chicago has developed a multi-phased plan for reopening churches and resuming public participation in the sacramental life of the local Church. Our parish is implementing this plan to prudently and gradually resume use of our church building. • Our Reopening Team has been hard at work adapting

the plan to our building and recruiting volunteers to help. Please contact the parish office if you are under 65, in good health, and would like to volunteer for Cleaning or Greeting. Training details are available on the parish website under Liturgy > Volunteers.

• We received certification on June 18 for Phase I, which allows for Baptisms, Reconciliation, Weddings and Funerals. So far we have held Confessions and four Funerals; Baptisms resume this weekend.

• On June 25 we were certified also for Phase II, which allows for public Masses. Our reduced weekend Mass schedule allows for extra time to clean between the Masses: in English at 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, and in Spanish at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

• Streaming Masses will continue each weekend on the parish website, parish.queenofangelschicago.org.

This is a slow process, but the guidelines and measures are designed to protect the health of our community and help parishioners feel safe. Please expect reduced seating capacity to allow for social distancing and adaptations to promote safer participation. Among these measures: • Online reservation system. (You may also call the

parish office Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) Registration opens Monday afternoons for Masses and Baptisms the following weekend, for up to 50 people at each Mass and 10 per family at Baptisms. We will work up to having Masses with 15% to 20% of church capacity. If someone becomes ill with Covid-19, we need to inform anyone who may have been exposed. Please see the parish website under Liturgy > Register.

• Personal protective equipment. Except for ministers actively speaking from the sanctuary, you must wear a mask at church. Use hand sanitizer when entering.

• Markings at church for social distancing. Greeters will lead you to a seat. The floor is marked with red tape to help you know where to go or where to stand in line if needed. The center aisle is one-way toward the altar and the side aisles are one-way toward the back. Some pews are roped off. There are spaces for couples and individuals on the left side of the church and for family groups to sit together on the right side.

• Changes to the liturgy. Singing by the congregation is not allowed. There will be no collection by ushers; instead, before Mass you may drop your gift in the box in the gathering space. At Communion time, a greeter will cue you and direct you to use hand sanitizer. Wear your mask while receiving Communion in your hand, then step 6 feet to the side to adjust your mask and consume the Body of Christ, away from the minister.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & SIBLINGS In creating awareness of Domestic Violence, our Outreach Team has prioritized the type of violence most often associated with the term Domestic Violence, that of one spouse abusing the other spouse. But there are many types of relationships in a household that may become abusive, and one of the saddest is sibling abuse. Sibling bullying and abuse fester in a home because parents often refuse to see what is going on often before their eyes: the actions of a (usually) older child taking advantage of a younger, weaker brother or sister. Sibling abuse may be physical, psychological, or sexual, and can be expressed through seemingly benign behaviors, such as ordering, manipulation, poking, or tickling. It’s damaging when there is persistent teasing, denigration, or physical harm by one sibling on another. Emotional abuse by a sibling can have effects long into adulthood. Emotional abuse includes name-calling, belittling, teasing, shaming, threats, intimidation, false accusations, provocation, and destroying a sibling’s belongings. The one perpetuating the harm may use manipulative tactics, such as playing the victim, deceit, threats, withholding, bribes, stonewalling, or trickery in order to exploit and gain an advantage over a younger child. It is a parent’s responsibility to create a home environment where every child is cherished, nurtured and safe from sibling cruelty. A parent must pay attention to the interaction between the children in a home and set and maintain firm boundaries.

—The Domestic Violence Outreach Team of St. Benedict & Queen of Angels Parishes

PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION for when we cannot receive the Eucharist

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I

desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least

spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

GIVECENTRAL MEETS PARISH NEED During these unprecedented times, we urge our parishioners to use GiveCentral to support Queen of Angels. The business of the parish continues even if the office remains closed to the public and the church cautiously reopens. Thank you to those who have, in the recent past, made new gifts or continued donations through GiveCentral. GiveCentral.org is a secure online system where parishioners create individual giving profiles with payment options ranging from direct debit (ACH) to credit cards. Every transaction is securely recorded and saved in your own payment history. Thank you to the increasing number of parishioners now making donations to Queen of Angels through our online donation service. By giving electronically, your regular gifts can be made consistently and easily as you continue to support our Catholic community. Donations can also be made on a one-time basis without creating a profile. It is convenient for parishioners, reduces the risks associated with transporting checks or cash, and makes it easier for the parish to budget for the future. On GiveCentral you can sign up to give separate donations in different events (categories or buckets), similar to using different envelopes for second collections. Once you locate Queen of Angels on the GiveCentral.org website, choose Sunday Collection or click “View More” to find these additional events: • Sharing Parish—BVM: Benefits our sister church in the

Sharing program, Maternity BVM in Humboldt Park. • Lyman Fund Donation: Enables children to remain in

our parish school during a parent’s financial hardship. • Special Mass Intention: Remember a loved one, living

or deceased, at a weekday or Sunday Mass. Monsignor Jim continues to celebrate Mass privately each day for all requested intentions. The suggested donation is $10 per Mass. Once you have donated, please also email [email protected] with specifics on your intention request(s) including name(s) and date(s).

No matter how you choose to support the parish, thank you for your continuing participation in our mission.

ONLINE GRIEF GROUPS Have you experienced loss during these difficult times? The grieving process has been made even more stressful when we cannot gather to say goodbye to or celebrate the lives of our deceased loved ones, making us even more alone. Online grief groups offered by the archdiocese are a place of comfort within our faith tradition. The online grief group facilitators are not counselors and do not give advice, but they will be present to listen and guide you in prayer and reflection. Groups for adults 18 and over are available on Zoom in English, Spanish and Polish. Visit archchicago.org/coronavirus/online-grief-groups.
