members regarding the overall operations of the committee on

a whole. The third Committee meeting that was held on

September 25, 2013 was for the primary purpose of officially

that can supply the uniform material need at the least cost.

On October 30, 2013; discussion surrounded the various

prices associated with the different options in relation to

the purchase of the material for the uniforms, badges and

cres. After deliberation a conscious decision was made from

the available options. On November 6, 2013 we were

encouraged to continue to cooperate with the objective of

the seminar. Due to issues beyond their control, some

committee members had to inform the relevant persons in

relation to their absence or lateness from committee

meetings(s).However all individuals of the committee,

whether absent or present would be kept up to date, in order

to familiarize ourselves as a committee with each other.

The committee is charged with one of the most pivotal

responsibilities within the finance seminar and thus

provides a great service for the entire student body.

8

Committee:

Week1 Mr. Nicholson conducted a presentation on, ‘rules’ he

started, with the showing of a video by Bill Gates titled

’11 Rules you will never learn in School’. A Second Video

was shown titled ‘Turtle & the Rabbit’

Rules that you will never learn in school by ‘Bill Gates’

Life is not fair get use to it. The world does not care about your self

esteem. You will not earn huge salary a year

after high school. You think your teachers are tough wait

till you get a boss. Flipping burgers are not below your

dignity. Your grand parents did it: opportunities If you mess up its not parents fault Your parents were not always boring; they

got this form paying bills. Life is not divided in semester you don’t

get summer off. Television is not real. Be nice to nerds chances are you might

end up working for one.

9

Committee:

Impacts: The presentation on the 11 Rules of Bill Gates

convey realities and reinforce the need to be tolerate

others, it brief me on what to expect in future committees.

As sometimes we may work with persons you may deemed as

being eccentric how ever we must tolerate such persons.

This video highlighted the consequence of being

overconfident, careless & lax, it was suggested that we

should to identify your core competencies and work together

as a team to achieve above Par.

The meeting was aimed briefing us of the rules that you will

never learn in school by Bill Gates:

Week: 2 Mr. Nicholson addressed the in-house matters that of

electing officers for representing members of seminar that

is the executive body and committee chairpersons. Mr.

Nicholson asked members for anyone who had read the

newspaper. He went on to state the ignorance of members in

being unaware of matters affecting the Jamaican Economy is

not good. The headline of the newspaper stated by Mr.

Nicholson was ‘Employment for graduates’. He stated that it

10

Committee:

is not necessary that you will be graduating from University

and get a job.

Impacts: it has brought some amount of awareness of the

possibility that there is no guarantee of getting a job. As

a result, contingency planning must be put in place to help

to cope with such potential miss opt.

Week: 4 Mr. Shaw reinforced the importance of presentations

and attire required for presentations. Mr. Shaw used himself

as an example of how one should prepare for a presentation.

He stated that members should disregard quoting from books

and newspapers/Gleaner but to utilize journals.

Impact: I learnt that you attire say a lot about and also

to use credible sources in my research.

Week: 5 Guest speakers Ms. Josette Robinson used various

interview quotes. A clip was shown on the interview process

with the moral depicted on being prepared for anything in an

interview. Ms. Robinson highlighted various interview tips:

1. An interview begins with application for a job.

11

Committee:

2. Practice interviewing.3. Research4. Get ready 5. Be on time 6. Stay calm7. Show what you know and other important tips.

8.

Ms. Robinson highlighted the Do’s and Don’ts of an

interview. These were as follows:

Do’s:1. Dress appropriately2. Offer handshake3. Maintain eye

contact4. Respond to

questions & back5. Sell yourself

Don’ts:1. Don’t be late2. Don’t lie3. Don’t treat the

interview casual4. Turn off cell

phones

12

Committee:

Ms. Robinson highlighted that work ethics refer to as

common courtesy in workplace. The

various characteristics of work ethics were as follows:

Honesty Refrain from gossip Value diversity-everyone is different ,respect

opinion Cooperate adhere to rules, regulations and policies

at the organization Reliability Be goal oriented Be positive and helpful Take proper care of your hygiene Get a job description

Ms. Robinson highlighted various information that was

beneficial; in knowing how to conduct ourselves in an

interview as well as for an interview.

Impact Miss Josette Robinson presentation Interview tips &

Work ethics helped me to be more aware of what is expected

of me with regards to interviews. The following tip really

made the vagueness more clear: the application which is a

resource, she went on to say that-An interview begins with

13

Committee:

your application for the job. She stated that ‘interviews

that it is the most uncomfortable situation, we should not

be too comfortable because it is a test that we must pass.

The clip was shown allowed us to know how we should be

prepared for an interview. Tips given includes: Be on

time; Stay calm; Show what you know about the company;

Follow up but do not stalk or show desperation. Work

ethics are common courtesy in the work place, it looks at

how to behave in the organization and handle issues

regardless of the situation.

Week6: Presentation conducted by facilitator Mr. Nicholson

on topic ‘How to conduct meetings’. Mr. Nicholson stated

that there are different types of meetings formal and

informal. He went to mention the process of an agenda as

well as purpose of motions and importance of it. The steps

in making a motion were also established. Mr. Nicholson made

mention of the importance of minutes taken and the rights of

members being protected. He also stated that a quorum should

also be present at meetings. There were various other

14

Committee:

important information offered by Mr. Nicholson spoke in

regards to the proper conducting of a meeting. In addition,

we discussed book ‘who moved my cheese’.

Impact: We explore an amazing way to deal with change in

both our work and personal life. We had an interesting

discussion about book, (WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?).They keep

moving the cheese represent your goals or desired

achievement. The more important your cheese is to you the

more you want to hold on to it”, this involves anticipate

change and being able to respond positively.

A question was asked “What would you do if you

were not afraid” Get ready to move with the cheese. It

was highlighted that fear keeps us from venturing into

opportunity, but the thought of better will get you

going. Monitoring change is important, Smell the cheese

often so you know when it is getting old. “When you

move beyond your fear, you will feel free”. We must

imagine our self enjoying new cheese/opportunity even

before we find it. We must adapt to change quickly as

15

Committee:

the quicker we let go of old cheese/opportunity the

sooner we will find new cheese/opportunity.” We were

encouraged to go past our fear and enjoy the adventure

remembering that, nothing changes, unless we change it.

I learnt, to get rid of old beliefs as this will not

lead us to any new cheese/opportunity. When you see

that you can find and enjoy new cheese/opportunity, you

change course. Reflect on you past mistakes and use

them a stepping stones can help to plan for the future.

Don’t expect things to always be the same, because life

is not like that .Don’t expect your friends to always

be there because people change. Don’t expect

opportunities to come to you while you remain stagnant

change is inevitable so keep things simple, don’t

expect too much, work with the flow, be flexible and if

it doesn’t happen immediate, get up keep moving and

move quickly. Do not over analyze or overcomplicate

yourself with confusion. When life or your situation

change, adopt change from within and embrace the new

cheese/opportunity that lies ahead.16

The developing ideas of proposals were given to be:

1. Innovation2. Based on knowledge3. Must be expanded4. Cannot be incremental

Ms Nelson went on to state that when writing winning

proposals we should consider our audience and mindset of

looking for?

The reviewers look first for:

1. What is the title?2. Who is the applicant?3. Institution affiliation.4. Basic idea of expertise5. Reviewer-friendly.6. No grammatical errors/spelling7. Clear & concise8. No Jargons

17

The professionalism Committee has concluded that the

finance and banking Seminar 2013/2014 semester one (1) was a

journey that all finance students should go through. As

this phase of the seminar gave us both theoretical and

32

Committee:

practical knowledge of different types of situations that

may occur in the working world today or in the future.

The facilitators were there to guide us through

activities and projects and ensure that our objectives were

being met. Each week we had meaningful information being

disseminated from the facilitators, various presenters and,

or the heads of departments, which had continuously

increased our intellectual capabilities from the inception

of the semester through to the end of same.

Upon completion of semester one I decided that most of

the general objectives related to the semester had been met.

The presentations have contributed to the development of

students rearing to enter the working world and have

strengthened the capabilities of others who are already in

the field.

Gradually we gained enchanting knowledge weekly as we

went through the objectives of the finance seminar Syllabus

2013/2014, as quoted “enhance their ability to perform as

leaders in the field of finance; engage in practical

33

Committee:

activities to plan, fund, execute and evaluate a major event

working together as a team; convene a forum to meaningfully

explore problems and solutions in organization’s competitive

challenges; appreciate the vital importance of personal

effectiveness and professional ethics in business

organizations. Groups in total presented on various topics

which were informative yet challenging in terms of working

with other students that you were merely acquainted with,

researching and putting together the relevant information on

time and presenting it to meet the objectives of the rubric.

The topics that were given were based on situations

that affect and will affect Jamaicans locally. Some of these

were noted to make headlines in the news on a daily basis

and were brought to the classroom level discussions; giving

us an intimate experience of frameworks such as policies,

regulations and legalisations that are affecting us and that

will affect us in the future. Some of these frameworks will

affect us both negatively and positive, however, we were

well-informed throughout these invaluable presentations. I

34

Committee:

concluded that the presentations both by guest speakers and

students along with the various tasks required and performed

by the different committees incorporate an important

opportunity to synchronize these efforts to ‘hands-on’

experience in work environment

Recommendations

1. Identification badges should be issued to the Executive

members of the various seminar committees, upon the

confirmation of all members. The badges will display a

particular position as well as the words “finance

Seminar”.

2. Regarding choosing a committee, seminar facilitators may

explore using emails to log this procedure. In that a

deadline may be communicated and persons send their

confirmation via email, who would then be added to a

committee based on the order the mail was received.

Alternatively, a type of ‘enrolment’ mechanism may be

employed where students would be required to log on to

Moodle, per se, and ‘enroll’ within a particular

35

Committee:

committee up to a specified date and time deadline. Other

considerations may be a raffle in that the committees are

placed into a raffle and students randomly choose a

committee.

3. A recorder should be used at meetings so as to facilitate

more efficient note-taking at meetings as sometimes

ideas, opinions and decisions may be exchanged too

quickly and passionately to be accurately recorded.

4. It should be a general practice that the power point

presentations are retrieved from guest presenters (who

would agree to same, prior to the meeting) and emailed to

the respective heads of committees who would then forward

same to their members.

5. As best as possible, the seminar meetings should be held

in one room so as to reduce set up and settling down

time, as well as aid in improving transparency and more

effective monitoring of students and possible breaches of

the rules of seminar.

36

Committee:

6. At times, the students overall attitude towards the

seminar is not professional or serious as to the matters

or issues being discussed. It is recommended that

students be sensitized prior to their seminar year on the

importance of the seminar, what it entails and the

expectations of the students.

7. Hence persons might sign and then go home. The

combination of part time and full time students for the

issue analysis is a challenging area that causes

difficulty in organizing meetings and working on

assignments. It is recommended the groups in the future

should not be mixed, as to have an easier flow of

interaction when completing an assignment.

Minutes for the general meetings are sent out too late.In order to ensure that members are able to have time toscrutinize the minutes of the previous meeting, it shouldbe sent out at least a day before the next meeting.

37
