018 marks the 50th anniversary of Egis’s experience in urban

and railway transport, since the establishment of Semaly in 1968 by the Lyon authorities for the construction of what has today become one of the best urban transport networks in Europe.

Over the years, Egis has expanded its know-how and skills and has constantly fostered initiative and innovation with major milestones such as the high-capacity automatic metro (Maggaly) in the 1990s, or, more recently, the “New take on the tramway” (Le tramway autrement®) for medium-sized cities. Today, our group is a leading light in digital transformation solutions. By 2020, BIM will be used on nearly 90% of our design activity across all sectors.In parallel, the company made a powerful entrance in the railway sphere at the beginning of the 2000s, at a time when the French market was opening up to competition and HSL lines were developing in France and abroad. Once again, Egis combined its expertise and know-how to make its contribution to the rail industry and in recent years has successfully participated in the construction of major infrastructure. Today, we are increasingly turning our attention to operated railways to help SNCF address the challenge of modernising and maintaining its rail network.

The big challenge is about creating systems which are increasingly efficient, innovative and most importantly tailored to each situation in order to contribute to social harmony and play a part in the dynamism of cities and communities all over the world. As passionate designers, we created a structure in 2018 to codesign projects with our clients, Rail Academy by Egis®, to share and challenge our expertise and our visions on the future development of our markets. The significance of our mission is dependent on the use and very utility of the projects that we build every day with the men and women who make up our teams.

Egis boasts more than 300 projects, either commissioned or under construction around the world, such as the metros in Lyon, Doha, Grand Paris Express, the Sud Europe Atlantique HSL in France and the Kenitra-Tangier HSL in Morocco, and the light rail systems of Nice, Birmingham and Montpellier. While all of these are a source of pride for us and fuel our ambition, our history is an ongoing story, written with the mobility of the future.

Extension of the Emirates rail network

United Arab Emirates. The network, which currently has more than 260 km of track in operation, will be extended by a further 850 km between now and 2024. Egis is acting as Consultant to the project owner Etihad Rail in the management of this major project.

First services for Nice and Luxembourg light rail systems

France, Luxembourg. Through these projects, Egis demonstrates its ability to design the light rail system of the 21st century, based on a concentrate of innovations and perfect urban integration. Egis was responsible for the programme management of these two projects.

Autonomous vehicles at the heart of tomorrow’s transport

France, USA. Egis is supporting the development of autonomous shuttles in Jacksonville in the USA (Ultimate Urban Circulator) and for internal transport services in the Technolac business park in Chambéry, France.

Grand Paris Express: beginning of construction of first diaphragm walls of line 16 structures

France. In summer 2018, work started on the first diaphragm walls on line 16 of Grand Paris Express. This is the iconic first stage in civil engineering package 1 of an outstanding project set to last nearly 6 years.

Inauguration of Africa’s first HSL

Morocco. Egis was responsible for the EPCM of track, catenary and construction depots (entire line) and civil engineering (North package) for the first HSL in Africa, commissioned in summer 2018. Our teams had been waiting for this day for 10 years!

Eole Project: a third railway line at Mantes Station

France. Egis is responsible for the civil engineering programme management of a third track on the at-grade section of the project to extend the RER line west of Paris.

L2 bypass in Marseille

Following the successful commissioning of the East section in 2016, the North section was inaugurated in October 2018, marking the end of more than four years of works. As a member of the Société de la Rocade L2 and of the construction consortium GIE L2, Egis was a key player in this exceptional project, as EPC manager, BIM manager and the turnkey integrator of operating plant and equipment.

ROADSThe L2 bypass project in Marseille, which stands out today as a BIM reference in the construction of urban road infrastructure in France, was an incredible human adventure.

T o address this ambitious challenge back in 2013, we firstly had to convince

our partner Bouygues of the pertinence of using BIM. It was clear that the project, of which 60% of the distance is in a cut and cover tunnel, was highly complex, notably in terms of visibility and disciplinary interfaces. The project’s decision makers and some production teams remained unsure of what BIM, which hitherto had relatively few references in line infrastructure, could contribute to design. We worked together to define and stabilise the items that might lead to setting reasonable goals for 3D modelling. From the design of the project to construction and even to operation, BIM facilitates the management of interfaces between the multiple constraints of the site such as existing structures or the numerous underground utility networks. On this type of project, it is essential to be able to prioritise the issues in order to avoid major and unavoidable conflict before starting work.

In addition, using the digital model in project phase as a virtual site visit tool constituted an asset towards the government services to prepare the safety audit. This collaborative working environment which encourages and leads to the sharing of reliable information, naturally brings about a climate of trust. It is very rewarding to be able to guarantee that work will progress according to plan by simulating certain construction phases in virtual mode.In a sector subjected to constant changes in regulations, BIM offers an exceptional opportunity for adaptation, analysis and consolidation whilst ensuring that technical requirements and environmental constraints are taken into account. For the Marseille L2 bypass, the level of finalisation was such that BIM won over all the teams working on the project, in particular those of the contractors. The recent commissioning of the bypass, complying with all the expressed requirements, furthermore served to confirm confirmed that while this project was generic in purpose, it was no less unique.

Egis wins three road contracts in Brazil

Brazil. Egis is technical adviser to the International Finance Corporation (World Bank) for the concession of more than 2,000 km of federal highways and 800 km of roads in the State of São Paulo. The Group is also carrying out designs and environmental programmes for the works to widen the federal highway BR-364 on a 793 km section located between the State of Mato Grosso and the State of Rondônia.

Seashells in the asphalt

Mauritania. Egis is supervising the reconstruction works on 145 km of the national highway RN2 between Rosso and Bombri, on the route between the capital and Rosso near Senegal. The specificity of this project is that the bitumen (asphalt concrete and gravel) is being manufactured from crushed seashells, since no rock can be found at a reasonable distance from the construction site.

A coastal freeway project to reduce congestion in Mumbai

India. To deal with the regularly gridlocked road traffic in Mumbai, Egis is working on a collection of coastal motorways and is renovating bridges, roads and tunnels in the western part of the city.

Inauguration of Demir Kapija – Smokvica highway

North Macedonia. This 28 km motorway project, whose construction was supervised by Egis, completes the Pan-European Corridor X which crosses the country from north to south.

The A10 motorway goes virtual

France. The project to widen a section of the A10 motorway north of Orleans to 2×4 lanes provided Egis with its first opportunity of modelling a junction in virtual reality.

A304 motorway open to traffic

France. This 31 km motorway in the north east of France was inaugurated in summer 2018. Egis conducted the full programme management of operations (technical designs and supervision of works) along the full length of the road.

A new expressway in Bundelkhand

India. Egis is conducting feasibility studies for the new motorway which, on completion, will run from the region of Bundelkhand, in northern central India, to New Delhi.

“Inventing Bruneseau” call for projects

Egis and its entity Elioth are part of the “Nouvel R” consortium which won the call for urban projects “Inventer (inventing) Bruneseau.” The development of this 95,000 m² district between Paris and Ivry-sur-Seine, will place major emphasis on eco-materials and low energy consumption. This ambitious project will make Bruneseau the first carbon-free district in France.

BUILDINGS

Bruneseau is a perfect illustration of the complementarity of our disciplines which work together in designing this outstanding project.

The development of a low carbon projects such as Bruneseau calls on an

all-round form of engineering. This project in particular mobilised cutting-edge expertise to address energy and environmental issues. To successfully market the 11 buildings including four tower blocks which will symbolise the new connection between Paris and Ivry, the buildings must display an exemplary carbon footprint. In terms of construction, two thirds of structural elements will be made from wood, including floors. In order to get around the drawback of the flammability of the material, new constructive solutions were created. This project, an iconic example of the environmental ambitions of Paris City Hall, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, includes within its design an objective of 50% of energy produced or recovered on site, a carbon footprint divided by five compared with the average in Paris and a target of 65% of energy requirements met by renewable energy.We therefore proposed that the future district be supplied with renewable and recoverable energy, notably using heating and cooling generation networks and the large-scale installation of solar panels. Incorporating and managing the infrastructure, in the immediate proximity to the Paris ring-road and its slip roads, was a constraint for the project methodology.

The idea is to absorb the infrastructure and tone down the urban density to create a genuine town centre. The real estate programme, aiming to achieve a social and functional mix, presents buildings that are designed as vertical villages offering a blend of residences for the elderly, for students, social housing or first-time buyer properties, retail spaces, offices, etc. Another sizeable challenge to be met was that of acoustics. Special attention was given to the soundproofing of facades and also to the quality of air through a bioclimatic system. Beyond the concentrate of innovations that the project displays, it above all shows a balance of uses. Furthermore, in the last phase of the competition, our teams recommended that this technology be presented to the public. Exhibited in the first eco-designed building, this real-time energy generation demonstrator will aim to sensitise inhabitants and fully embed the ecology transition at the heart of their way of life.

Al Seef mixed district nominated at the 2019 MIPIM Awards

United Arab Emirates. Designed by 10 Design’s Gordon Affleck and Paul Rodgers and located on the shores of the Dubai Creek, the site includes shops and restaurants, together with two Jumeirah “Zabeel House” hotels.

First IKEA real estate complex on the Riviera

France. Egis is the programme manager for the construction of a real estate complex, designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte. The project includes housing and offices built around an IKEA store.

Premium hotel on Île Seguin, Paris

France. This six-storey building at the tip of the island will have rippled facades that open onto the River Seine. Egis is responsible for fluids engineering.

An HEQ high school with wooden structure and straw insulation in Aizenay

France. The high school, designed by the CRR architecture practice, will be made of wooden structures, floors and facades and a concrete base and core. Egis will be managing the programme for all the building trades.

Campus Carreire: renovation of biology-healthcare sector in Bordeaux

France. Facilities will remain open during the construction work on biological and animal laboratories and the refurbishment of the teaching block. Egis is in charge of the technical packages of highways and utilities, combined drawings, fire safety coordination and BIM management.

Green Office® Enjoy, the largest positive energy, wooden structured office block in France.

France. Erected at the heart of the Clichy-Batignolles eco-district (17th arrondissement of Paris), “Enjoy” combines three assets: low carbon, low consumption and positive energy. Egis is tasked with project coordination and construction supervision.

A maritime history museum made from zinc, glass and wood in Saint-Malo

France. Egis is in charge of the general engineering of this museum with its ecological and spectacular architecture which will be part of the Smile programme on smart networks.

Ethiopia. Built near to barley crops, the malthouse will

be fitted with infrastructure incorporating the latest technology. It will help

Grand Nancy Thermal, a modern aquatic complex

France. This project offers a well-rounded architectural partition, respecting the classical legacy of Nancy architect Louis Lanternier from the beginning of the 20th century. Egis is conducting the engineering of the structure, roads and utilities works packages and the BIM management.

Renovation of Basse-Terre penitentiary facility

France. Located in the city centre, this building will be connected to the court building and will benefit from a local and bioclimatic architecture. Egis is responsible for the engineering of fluids, roads and utilities works packages.

Bin Al Sheikh Hotel, a French style hotel in the Middle East

United Arab Emirates. Egis will be involved in the project management of the construction of a 150 m tower (20 floors) made from a steel structure, accommodating shops, restaurants and hotel services.©

Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, Lucknow (India)

The Indian Airport Authority (IAA) has approved plans for an increase in the capacity of Lucknow airport through the construction of a new 100,000 sqm terminal which will cater to passenger traffic growth over the next 20 years. Egis is providing advisory services to this engineering project from design stage to commissioning.

In the battle against climate change, economic players are on the frontline, with the air travel sector no exception.

With passenger traffic forecasted to double between now and 2050, airports all over the world are gearing up to align with the 1.5°C trajectory recommended by the Paris Agreement. Drawing on its 50 years of activity in aviation, Egis is deploying its energies to develop innovative solutions which will help adapt airport infrastructure to the new challenges of growth and sustainability. These measures aim to simultaneously improve the passenger experience, guarantee airport profitability and pursue carbon neutral design and operation standards. In the case of Lucknow airport in India, for example, we made consistent use of LED lighting and built a solar farm to supply approximately 5% of the energy required for the air conditioning and lighting of the 100,000 sqm terminal, whose construction we are currently supervising. To optimise the use of natural resources, a grey water recovery system has been introduced for washrooms and cooling towers. These solutions all illustrate the major efforts made by airports to reduce their environmental footprint. We support them in obtaining a label or a certification that proves the validity of their approach, whether in design & build (GRIHA1, LEED2) or in long-term operation (Airport Carbon Accreditation, ISO 14001).

We do everything we can to help the aviation sector achieve its ecology transition. Beyond their aptitude for transformation and their economic ability to address it, airports are now including a larger sustainability aspect within their development model and are contributing, like other sectors, to meeting the major challenges of our time.

Through coherent master plans, energy-efficient integrated infrastructure planning and the responsible use of resources (local channels), our global approach brings our clients to consider solutions which, while maintaining the profitability of the airport, also help it in reducing its environmental footprint. On this aspect, the airport has much to gain in terms of image, gradually shedding its reputation as a cause of disturbance and donning the mantle of a true urban development serving people and attentive to its impact.

United Kingdom. Egis produced a report examining the dependency of British airports and airlines on their data and systems suppliers and the cybersecurity risks arising therefrom.

Europe. Egis is advising the European Commission on the future possible applications of the satellite-based navigation system EGNOS for the aviation sector.

Saudi Arabia. Egis is supporting the two airlines on introducing flights from the new terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport, with a successful soft launch in May 2018.

CITIESA far cry from the hubris flaunted by certain other Middle Eastern cities, Al Mutlaa aims to be an exemplary sustainable model for future cities in Kuwait.

L ocated 40 km from the capital, the South Al-Mutlaa City project is part of the

2035 vision supported by the Public Authority for Housing Welfare (PAHW) to develop a visionary urban development plan. Egis produced scenarios and economic models based on several aspects of the Smart City, including the feasibility of a city-wide cooling network. This study resulted in the production of an educational tool promoting a compact and polycentric city initiating Kuwait’s ecology transition. But drawing up an urban design manual in a desert environment requires revisiting the city in its context: on the one hand, defining the building construction and zoning regulation standards, and on the other, adopting a bioclimatic approach to guarantee the technical and economic equilibrium of a highly energy-intensive city.Our analysis therefore centred on an urban cooling network to reduce the high electricity consumption of air conditioning systems.

The goal was to generate comfortable conditions in a hot and arid climate by drawing mainly on traditional techniques and local resources, and more importantly to reduce Kuwait’s oil dependency. By treating urban cooling like a public service, it will be integrated durably and economically in the future urban development plans. The ecosystemic approach - from the material to the building and from the district to the city - clearly identified the importance of building the city on a human scale. It is by recreating the connection between people and their environment and obtaining public buy-in that the city of the future will be resilient. Its public spaces will be designed to build social ties. It will offer high quality spaces and a varied range of local services, such as this mall designed like a city within the city, with its high street lined with streetlamps symbolising the new Kuwaiti community spirit.

A new bus network in Toulouse

France. The Linéo concept consists of introducing bus rapid transit lines offering more frequent services and a wider timetable than the other bus lines in the city region. Egis was appointed Engineer for this infrastructure project.

Redevelopment of industrial wasteland in Armentières and Houplines

France. To reconvert the sector formerly occupied by the textile industry, Egis is developing a district project capable of bringing fluidity to the relations between communities and their points of interest: railway station, sports facilities, schools, shops.

Rouen left bank: from industrial wasteland to eco district

France. The Flaubert eco district, for which Egis is leading the urban design alongside Jacqueline Osty, the leader contractor and landscaper, is a blend of environmental harmony, housing and industrial legacy. The project aims to fight urban sprawl, take climate risks into consideration, reintroduce nature into the city and salvage abandoned wasteland.

Studies for parks in Cotonou

Benin. The old city centre and the decision-making institutions are being redeveloped to cater to new urban patterns and develop tourism whilst preserving local specificities such as lightweight materials and shade trees.

Feasibility study for Colmar southern bypass

France. Egis conducted the feasibility studies for a town bypass to improve traffic conditions south of the town and make travel easier between towns and villages west of Colmar.

Marseille: the factory of the city of the future thanks to BIM Management

France. Egis signed a six-year framework agreement to support the birth of a new district on a brownfield site, in the continuation of urban development in the La Joliette and Arenc sectors.

Chandigarh Smart City

India. Egis is providing technical assistance to the Indian government for the design and leadership of the smart city project in the northern city of Chandigarh.

Saint-Brieuc opens its first bus rapid transit line

France. Egis managed the engineering, procurement and construction of this east-west transit project. To integrate it more easily into the city fabric and gain the approval of inhabitants, work was carried out non-intrusively using our FURET methodology which contributes to making city centre projects less invasive and more acceptable.

A new lease of life for Peugeot site in Seine-Saint-Denis

France. A district combining businesses, housing, public facilities and a training centre is to be built on the PSA (Peugeot Société Anonyme) brownfield site in Aulnay-sous-Bous. Egis was appointed to conduct a land development study.

Smart parking in Paris

The consortium formed by Urbis Park Services, Transdev and Egis manages the street parking enforcement system in six of the 20 Paris arrondissements, representing more than 43,000 spaces. A first in France!

From soft mobility to the sustainable use of the car and from electric vehicles to autonomous transportation, the mobility of the future must not only fit in with new urban rhythms, but it must also be energy and resource efficient in order to play its full role in a carbon-free society.

Urban concentration and the ever-increasing development of communities entail

growing needs for mobility, at a time when climate change is a challenge that we all face.Nowadays, modern mobility has a duty not only to reflect the diversity of expectations of city dwellers but also to take into consideration the issues of public health and greenhouse gas emission control. This is why mobility must necessarily be conceived within the scope of the ecology and technology transitions currently underway so that we can guarantee future generations the quality of life that we owe them. In recent years we have expanded our range of skills in response to the challenges and needs of our public and private sector clients. We are now active across the full value chain, from upstream consulting to the proposal of veritable bundles of mobility services, all for the direct benefit of populations.

Day after day, our teams demonstrate their ability to develop the right technological solutions, for example to offer optimal access to different modes of transport or adapt infrastructure to the latest safety requirements. Our teams offer ever more effective services that help people get around better every day. In the area of smart parking, for example, we operate in around 40 towns and cities in France and abroad, with key references such as Paris and Amsterdam.

Our solutions involve not only the decongestion of urban space through better vehicle rotation and organisation of street parking, but also making users more responsible for their own behaviour and practices. When we draw up mobility blueprints and master plans for our clients, we additionally promote the implementation of low emission zones and thus lower pollution levels in our communities, with a genuine desire to “decarbonise” our city centres.

Over and beyond its primary function, today’s mobility has become a cornerstone of urban planning policy, placing transport at the heart of a city life refocussed on the place of the user. Smart cities require genuine intermodality that organises and enables smooth connections between one transport mode and another according to needs and temporalities. This rationalises all our efforts over the years in developing multimodal interchange hubs in the largest cities and reinforcing the space dedicated to green and alternative modes of transport. Reinventing mobility is undoubtedly a technical and institutional challenge of monumental scale, but it is truly imperative if we wish to promote new, more responsible travelling practices.

Lyon: organising mobility to fight solo car use

France. Egis is advising the Lyon Metropolitan authority in the organisation, governance and deployment of an action plan to manage mobility in its community. The stated aim is to reduce solo (single occupancy) car use, with an approach founded on insight into user needs and the promotion of sustainable transport modes.

Easytrip becomes a partner of Free2Move with its electronic tolling and parking services

France. Easytrip France is contributing to the enhancement of mobility services offered by Groupe PSA through its brand Free2Move, by supplying electronic tolling and car park services available through the Liber-t badge.

New trolleybus lines in three Ukrainian cities

Ukraine. As part Ukraine’s National Public Transport Programme, Egis was selected as a consultant on three projects for trolleybus lines in the municipalities of Kryvyï Rih, Kharkiv and Lviv.

Nantes Métropole: parking and public transport with a single ticket

France. Egis is supporting NGE (the plant and equipment administrator) in setting up a new park-and-ride service in Nantes based on a single ticket valid for both parking and public transport.

Aix-Marseille-Provence urban mobility plan

France. The metropolitan authority has started to draw up its region-wide urban mobility plan. Egis won the contract for the highways and accessibility chapters.

Low Emission Zones (LEZ) to improve air quality

France. Egis is conducting the first advisability and feasibility studies for the introduction of low emission traffic zones in France, reducing the use of polluting vehicles in city centres.

Car Wash Services: access to car washes with an Easytrip badge

Irlande. Easytrip Ireland (Egis group) has teamed up with the Maxol network to offer its customers access to partner car washes, with automatic invoicing thanks to their electronic tolling badge.

New Coastal Road, Reunion Island

Egis is at the helm of the largest project ever undertaken in the Indian Ocean: the New Coastal Road, a gigantic piece of infrastructure running 12.5 km combining causeways and viaducts built above the sea. In 2018, the project took a decisive step forward with the assembly of most of the piers and deck segments of the 5.4 km viaduct.

WATER ENERGY With its construction spearheaded by Egis’ multidisciplinary teams, the New Coastal Road is a one-of-a-kind structure in France and will be one of the symbols of Reunion Island in the 21st century.

A key vector for the economic development of Reunion Island (60,000 vehicles per

day), the New Coastal Road is a 12.5 km combination of causeways and viaducts built above the ocean. Its main purpose is to offer a remedy to the insecurity of the current coastal road between Saint-Denis de la Réunion and Le Port, often prone to rockslides and cyclonic swell. Back in 2011, when Egis won the EPCM contract put out for tender by the Reunion Regional Authority for the design and construction of the road, we documented all the natural data and technical constraints and challenges that the new structure would be required to satisfy. The viaduct, 5,400 m long and 28.90 m wide, is built on 48 piers in the sea. It was designed to resist events such as hundred-year cyclone tides and sea vessel collisions, while its six lanes of traffic include two for a segregated light rail line.

Building a structure in the sea and in a cyclone-prone region required a series of special measures. Virtually all of the viaduct was prefabricated on land then transported and assembled on site using a huge barge the size of a football pitch for the pier blocks (with loads weighing up to 4,800 tonnes) and a 2,500-tonne launch beam for the deck segments. The viaduct must meet very stringent quality standards in order to guarantee its durability in a marine environment which is extremely aggressive for structures.

As the Engineer of the project, Egis had to meet some very ambitious performance targets to avoid, reduce and offset any impacts on biodiversity. A series of detailed and innovative environmental surveys led to specifications which were included in the construction tenders (ecology, marine acoustics, sedimentology). Among the most significant of these, we installed anti-SPM (suspended particulate matter) barriers to protect the coral reefs, contributed to the installation of eco-reefs at the base of some of the piers to promote the development of ecosystems, installed submarine acoustic shields (bubble curtains) to avoid disturbing marine species, checked before any noisy work that there were no sea mammals in the area by flying over with microlites, and finally we suspended some night time lighting during sensitive periods to prevent beaching by marine birds, some of which are native to Reunion Island. These flagship measures are perfectly in tune with the potential for development, protection and promotion of Reunion. The construction investment amounts to 1.6 billion euros.

Renovation of longest immersed tunnel in Canada

Canada/Quebec. Working in a consortium with CIMA+, Egis is “Expert Adviser” to the project owner for the plans to refurbish the Louis Hippolyte-La-Fontaine freeway tunnel, running 1,400 m between Montreal and Longueil beneath the Saint-Laurent River. Works will be carried out without closing the tunnel.

Reconstruction of Chamaix Viaduct in Fréjus

France. A new viaduct 350 m in length and 40 m high is being built at an altitude of 1,100 m between two landslide-prone slopes and nearby an existing viaduct which will be subsequently dismantled. Egis is managing the entire programme which is subject to unparalleled geotechnical and structural challenges.

SUSTAINABLY SUPPORTING THE MASSIVE URBAN DEVELOPMENT OF SOUTHEAST ASIA.

Southeast Asia is currently entering a period of sudden urban transition, with a massive rural exodus and populations congregating in often chaotically-expanding urban hubs. To resolve this, Egis has signed a framework contract for more than three years with the Asian Development Bank to make cities more “livable” in six Southeast Asian countries. This is a vast programme of more than one billion euros of investment divided into as many “sub projects” as there are urban services requiring improvement. This offers our teams an opportunity to display the full extent of their expertise in the area of urban water engineering (drinking water, wastewater and drainage, flood protection), waste management and urban planning to substantially improve the quality of life of residents and make the large Asian metropolises resilient and sustainable by adapting to climate change, thanks to developments tailored to local circumstances.

Fighting flooding

Philippines. Egis is assisting the Philippine government in its flood management programme through the strengthening of mitigation infrastructure and a master plan for the improvement of the country’s watersheds.

Extension of Brest industrial port

France. Egis is in charge of the comprehensive and integrated programme management of this extension project which also includes a wide range of environmental measures.

Commissioning of Barka IV desalination plant

Qatar. Egis spent two-and-a-half years providing project management ocnsultancy services including design review, construction supervision and assistance in operational launch in June 2018.

Risk analysis of Seine Aval wastewater treatment plant

Achères, France. As part of an “Occupational Health and Safety” mission, Egis is conducting a risk analysis on behalf of SIAAP relating to the explosive atmospheres of the largest wastewater treatment plant in Europe.

An artificial reef to restore marine biodiversity

France. Seaboost (an Egis subsidiary) and its partner XtreeE won the “Innovation 2018” award at the Forum de l’Eco-Entreprise for their first artificial reef made in 3D from concrete.

REFORESTATION OF ZONES DEVASTATED BY A DAM COLLAPSE IN BRAZIL

The Renowa foundation appointed us for an assignment on the ecological restoration of the zones affected by the collapse of the Fundão dam in 2015 in Mariana (Minas Gerais). The foundation’s efforts focussed on three key themes: people and communities, land and water, reconstruction and infrastructure. Egis is contracted until 2020 to conduct reforestation works, covering a zone spanning 280 hectares. More than a million trees of local essences will be planted. Through this ecological restoration, we wish to reinstate the damaged ecosystem and essential services such as water production, climate regulation, carbon sequestration and wildlife habitat. This contract is a valuable opportunity to consolidate and expand our technical experience acquired in ecological restoration projects.

ITER, REPRODUCING THE SUN'S ENERGY

ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is preparing to pass on a hugely valuable legacy to future generations. When we have proven the feasibility of fusion energy, the world will have an alternative to fossil fuel at its disposal. In addition to solar and wind power and other renewable sources, the nuclear fusion process will supply an additional option based on the exploitation of a clean, safe and virtually inexhaustible energy source. ITER is also a project of every instant, where managing risks and schedules are an everyday concern. 2018 was a watershed year in which major civil engineering operations and the installation of utilities (HVAC - heating, ventilation and air conditioning -, electricity and other fluids networks) began to cohabit with machine assembly operations and the implementation of the process which will supervise its operation. It is also the year that saw the site powered up, through its connection to the national grid in January 2019. Finally, it was also this year that our basic contract was renewed until 2025, which is when the ITER machine is due to enter into its operational phase, with the production of the first “non-nuclear plasma”. For Egis, the adventure has only just begun!

Design of boiler plants of the future Greater Lyon heating and cooling network

France. To conduct the comprehensive programme management of the five heating and cooling generation and distribution plants, Egis used a BIM process from design phase to construction phase. Among the sites, the Surville facility will host the largest public biomass boiler plant in France.

A new generation nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point

United Kingdom. This will supply clean, safe and affordable electricity to more than five million households. Egis produced the civil engineering drawings for the buildings of the nuclear island for the two EPR reactors.

Electrification of rural zones in Kenya

Kenya. Egis won its first turnkey contract to supply new innovative renewable energy generation and storage solutions to 15 Kenyan villages.

Autopista Golfo Centro public-private partnership in Mexico

Egis is responsible for the operation, maintenance and renovation of three sections of toll road, connecting the centre of the country (Mexico City) with the port of Tuxpan on the Gulf of Mexico. Average traffic amounts to 170,000 vehicles per day.

ROAD & AIRPORTOPERATION

It has now been 27 years since OCACSA (Operacion y Conservacion de Autopistas Concesionadas) began

operating the leading toll highways in the country running between medium-sized Mexican cities located in the central and northern states of Librans de Tecpan, Celaya, Ciudad Obregón and Hermosillo. This in-depth local knowledge, combined with the expertise of Egis, has enabled us to become the leading independent highway operator in Mexico with nearly 800 employees, six contracts to our name and an operated network of 336 km. Egis’ know-how in the structuring of operating companies and financial projects was decisive in the delivery of the public-private partnership Autopista Golfo Centro. Indeed, the synergies existing between the different disciplines of the Group offer us more opportunities to analyse the feasibility of projects and offer new services to achieve total customer satisfaction.

The success of the Autopista Golfo Centro project is a new stage in the Group’s expansion in Latin America, in particular through the growth of its operating activities.

The Golfo Centro project is for the operation, maintenance and renovation of three toll road sections (142 km) over 13 years, connecting the centre of the country, Mexico City, with the port of Tuxpan on the Gulf of Mexico. This contract, which began on 1st February 2018, provides for the modernisation of manual tolling and electronic tolling equipment, traffic regulation facilities, and the renovation of road infrastructure. By following the MRO (maintenance – renovation - operation) model, we have always pursued the objective of extending the lifespan of equipment and installations by providing effective maintenance to guarantee the best possible safety to users. The technology used in Mexico is identical to that developed in Europe, such as fibre optics and emergency call-out services. However, in view of the growing trend in smartphones use, the traditional SOS phones have been replaced by a Wi-Fi solution accessible to users wherever they are on the highway, thereby improving the interface, the communication and assistance to users. This proficiency was furthermore illustrated through two other contracts for the operation of the Atlacomulco-Maravatío highway (centre of the country), considered as a national reference, and, more recently, the Jala-Compostela highway (in the west of the country). 2018 was a productive year in terms of growth and customer satisfaction. We expect to accelerate our development in Mexico, but also increase our footprint in Latin America where we are already monitoring several large projects in Colombia and Peru.

First green energy production project for our tunnels

Austria. More than 800 photovoltaic panels were introduced into service by our teams on the first section of the A5 motorway near the Czech border and on the north-east sections of the Vienna bypass which we operate. These panels enable us to supply electricity to the tunnels on these sections.

Plant and equipment contract for the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAEx)

Philippines. Egis is to equip the 44 km Cavite-Laguna Expressway, located south of Manila, with a new electronic tolling system working on number plate recognition. A first in this country!

Ostend-Bruges airport voted “Best company of the Year” in 2018

Belgium. Egis is the concession holder of this airport which is the gateway to Flanders for tourist traffic.

The first carbon neutral airport in Africa distinguished once again

Ivory Coast. Abidjan Airport (AERIA), in which Egis is the holder of a 35% stake and a reference partner, received the “Routes Marketing Award 2018” for the second time in the category of airports under four million passengers.

Hermes Airports racks up the awards! 

Cyprus. Hermes Airports, in which Egis is a shareholder, has earned several accolades for its operational excellence (HR Excellence label), the quality of its management (MEECO) and for the facilities and services offered to people with reduced mobility. Paphos airport was voted best airport in Europe by Airport Council International (ACI). In 2018, Larnaca and Paphos airports also celebrated their ten-millionth passenger.

A40 motorway between London and Birmingham

United Kingdom. In 2018, Egis took over the operation of this major motorway in the West Midlands of England (123 km). An environmental conservation mission was also conducted on site on two butterfly species, in partnership with UK Highways M40 Ltd et Highways England (project owner).

ParisLongchamp racecourse

On 29 April 2018, the illustrious Longchamp racecourse, renamed ParisLongchamp, unveiled its new look to visitors during a spectacular inaugural day. Designed and conceived by the programme management consortium Dominique Perrault Architecture, Tractebel, Oteis, Agence Ter, Lamoureux, the new grandstand, with its audacious silhouette of a galloping horse, blends in seamlessly with this renowned horse racing landscape.

CONSULTING and drive a new range of festive offerings to reach new audiences. In terms of design, the site obtained HQE Tertiaire® (High Environmental Quality - tertiary) certification for the new buildings and HQE Aménagement® (layout development) for the whole project, all within a strict conservation framework: energy and water efficiency, careful attention paid to biodiversity, fauna and flora, and more specifically to the existing plane and cedar trees which epitomise the racecourse and constitute a guarantee of a high-quality horse racing environment. Care for wildlife life was essential to the success of this project and its conservation was planned in the finest detail. One illustration of this is the two magnificent cedar trees that grow through the very middle of the construction under the watchful eye of the peregrine falcon rehoused in a nesting box placed specifically there for it. Working to deliver this project over a period of more than ten years, the Egis team accompanied the organisation to overcome the challenges and deliver work of the highest quality, acknowledged by France Galop which renewed its trust in the project management consultancy team at each successive stage.

T he management of very large projects entails addressing a range of regulatory and

environmental constraints. Situated on a listed heritage site, ParisLongchamp proved to be no exception to the rule. Requiring several administrative authorisations relating to the Building and Environment codes, the refurbishment of the racecourse, on which the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is run every year, was the subject of many discussions lasting ten years with Paris City Hall and the French architecture regulator Architecte des Bâtiments de France. Our client France Galop, a not-for-profit organisation which runs six racecourses and three training centres, brings together a range of different profiles with similarly varied interests: owners, trainers, breeders, jockeys and enthusiasts. Success thus depends on listening to all the stakeholders. The choice of project contributors, the design, planning permission and construction phases are above all issues based on people. Egis’ know-how in the field is a genuine asset to support our clients in delivering on their ambitions. It is our job to anticipate and prepare the projects in advance to ultimately bring about a consensus. While the general public’s waning interest in horseracing acted as a catalyst for the modernisation project, the client’s business plan and goals evolved over its course. We were required to consider “daily activities”, “special events” and “race days” with scalable services depending on requirements - company seminars, Fashion Week catwalks or music festivals such as Solidays –

University campuses begin their energy transition

France. At the initiative of the University Deans Congress (CPU) and with ten pilot universities, Egis drew up the methodological framework for the Campus Energy Efficiency Programme to 2030. Estimated results have been announced: with €800 million investment over 600,000 sqm, the ten pilot establishments can save 50% on their energy bills and reduce their carbon emissions by 60%.

Ile de Nantes hospital in BIM mode

France. As part of a project management consultancy assignment, Egis is responsible for verifying the digital models of plans to build the future university hospital in Nantes which will have more than 7,000 beds.

First BRT for Montbéliard

France. In October, Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération inaugurated its first bus rapid transit service to cater to growing mobility needs in its urban region. Egis supplied general assistance during the progress of the operation and coordinated the project in programming phase.

Rouen, a land of innovation

France. Egis is assisting Rouen Normandie Authority in the implementation of the call for projects “Territoire d’Innovation de Grand Ambition” (High-ambition innovation region) which aims to support innovative regions with nationwide reach in the key stages of a transformation project aimed at improving inhabitants’ quality of life.
