The northern section of the project area would be crossed by the R41 (Mainreef/Randfontein) provincial road, with the R24 (Albertina Sisulu/Hamberg) provincial road running along the northern boundary of the project area.
West Wits currently holds a prospecting right (GP 30/5/1/1/2/10035 PR) over the above farms. The prospecting right (MPT No. 29/2016) was ceded from Mintails SA Soweto Cluster (Proprietary) Limited to West Wits. Consent for the transfer of the prospecting right in terms of Section 11(2) of the MPRDA was granted by the DMR in 2018.
In broad terms, the proposed project would involve the short-term development of five open pit mining areas (the Mona Lisa Bird Reef Pit, Roodepoort Main Reef Pit, Rugby Club Main Reef Pit, 11 Shaft Main Reef Pit and Kimberley Reef East Pit) and refurbishment of two existing mine infrastructure complexes (the Bird Reef Central Infrastructure Complex and Kimberley Reef East Infrastructure Complex) which will be used to access the existing underground mine workings. The project would also include the establishment of run of mine ore stockpiles, topsoil stockpiles and waste rock dumps as well as supporting infrastructure including material storage and handling facilities (for fuel, lubricants, general and hazardous substances), general and hazardous waste management facilities, sewage management facilities, water management infrastructure, communication and lighting facilities, centralised and satellite offices, workshops, washbays, stores, change houses, lamprooms, vent fans and security facilities.
Prior to the commencement of the proposed project the following environmental authorisations are required from the mentioned competent authorities. The relevant legislation and associated activities include but are not limited to the following:
The Scoping Report will also be available to download from the SLR website from 3 August 2018. To do so, please visit: https://slrconsulting.com/za/slr-documents. The application is subject to a Scoping and EIA process as stipulated in the EIA Regulations (GNR 982, 8 December 2014), as amended, promulgated under Section 24(5) of the NEMA.
This notice also serves to inform Interested & Affected Parties (I&APs) that SLR is preparing a Scoping Report as part of the West Wits mining right application process. The purpose of the Scoping Report is to summarise the Scoping process followed to date; provide an overview of the proposed project and the surrounding environment; present potential impacts and possible preliminary mitigation measures; and provide terms of reference for specialist studies. The Scoping Report is being made available to I&APs for a 30-day comment period from 3 August 2018 until 3 September 2018. By CHRISTOPHER MOAGIJUST a day after the official handover of Bokamoso So-cial housing project, they have been vandalised.
This was after threats made by disgruntled back yard dwellers, who wanted to move in by force on Wednesday.
A group of 50 people alleged-ly burned five units and van-dalised 30 units at the site.
No injuries were reported except for a pregnant woman who fell from a wall while try-ing to flee the scene.
Mayor Herman Mashaba said: “I appeal to communities to raise their concerns in a manner that doesn’t infringe on the rights of others.”
One of the tenants, Sibongile Xaba (39), was happy to receive keys to her new home yester-

Resident Scebiso Masondo, said: “We’ve been engaging with the Joburg Social Hous-ing Company. We want the ma-jority of people who occupy the flats to be from Freedom Park.”
He said if the company didn’t want them to move in, they should take the flats to the city where they will be occupied by foreigners.
Mashaba said South Afri-cans should get first prefer-ence. He asked the company and the housing department to do an audit of the occupants of the properties.

By LETHABO KHAMBULESINCE the beginning of the year, 217 life sentences have been handed down to those guilty of violent crimes against women and children across Mzansi.
This was revealed by the po-lice ministry this week.
Crimes against women and children included murder, rape and child pornography.
Minister Bheki Cele has de-clared that the safety of women and children should be a polic-ing focus this year.
“Police are prioritising crimes against women and children while doing everything in their power to sensitise communities about paedophiles and other sex-ual offenders lurking in our communities,” Cele told the Peo-ple’s Paper.
The police also warned par-ents and guardians of children to report crimes committed against their kids.
This comes after a 29-year-old mum was sentenced to life im-prisonment in April for failing to report and identify the person responsible for raping her child in Soweto.
Cele said it was time for the
criminal justice system to deal decisively with those responsible for gender-based crimes.
Family violence, child protec-tion and sexual offences units have been working with the visi-ble policing and social crime prevention units to conduct awareness campaigns through-out the year.
They have been visiting schools and communities to edu-cate citizens about kids’ safety, cybercrime and pornography.
National police commissioner General Khehla Sitole has com-mended members of the unit for working hard to make sure criminals are brought to justice and that causes of crime are dealt with.
Among the cases that were successfully prosecuted were:
) In May, a 47-year-old man in Brits, North West, was sentenced to eight life sentences for raping three kids aged between nine and 11.
One of the kids was his niece, whom he made pregnant.
) In Bellville, Cape Town, a man found guilty of rape, sexual assault and child porn was sen-tenced to life in prison.
