Municipality vows to stop squatters

Daar was vier voertuie, insluitend Greef se

Police clamp down on illegal mining dens

mining equipment worth millions of rand at the den of illegal mines on August 22.

The mines that operated in Tjibeng, Sefateng, Phasha Kraal and other neighbouring villages around the Atok area, were also shut down. Burgersfort cluster commander, Maj Gen Masipha Maepa said they had previously warned the miners to stop their atrocious behaviour.

“We issued them with a court order, after a complaint of illegal mining was reported to us, but at night they would proceed with their activities. We were left with no choice but to conduct an operation that would ensure that no illegal mines operate.

“We went with the ‘operation clean-up’, which involved the police from our cluster, the police special unit (Hawks), the Limpopo Department of Mineral Resources and our legal team, to ensure we got rid of

the bogus miners for good.”Maepa said that to their disappointment,

the miners were nowhere to be found. It seemed as if they had been tipped off.

A reliable source from the area said there was an open-cast mine that was abandoned more than four decades ago. Recently, residents in the area started mining with and without machines, digging chrome with their spades and iron shovels,” our source said.

The chrome is reportedly sold to rich investors that frequently visit the Atok area. Police were monitoring the area to see if no one was trying to mine illegally.

According to the Southern African Legal Information Institute, an organ of state may institute proceedings for the eviction of an unlawful occupier from land which falls within its area of jurisdiction, except where the unlawful occupier is a mortgagor and the land in question is sold in a sale of execution pursuant to a mortgage. The court may grant such an order if it is just and equitable to do so, after considering all the relevant circumstances, and if the consent of that organ of state is required for the erection of a building or structure on that land or for the occupation of the land. Also if the

unlawful occupier is occupying a building or structure on that land without such consent having been obtained; or if it is in the public interest to grant such an order. For the purposes of this section, “public interest” includes the interest of the health and safety of those occupying the land and the public in general. In deciding whether it is just and equitable to grant an order for eviction, the court must take into consideration, the circumstances under which the unlawful occupier occupied the land and erected the building or structure, the period the unlawful occupier and his or her family have resided on the land in question, and the availability to the unlawful occupier of suitable alternative accommodation or land.

LYDENBURG - A two-and-a-half-year-old Harlequin Great Dane by the name of Jolie, stunned her owners and a local veterinarian when 19 pups were born through C-section over the weekend.

On Sunday, owners Mr Ian and Ms Natalie van der Merwe noticed that Jolie’s abdomen was swollen and that she was in a lot of discomfort. “Her belly was rock hard and she couldn’t dilate. We immediately took her to Dr Marietjie Malan of Long Tom animal clinic where she performed an emergency C-section and delivered the 19 pups.”

Unfortunately, on Sunday at the veterinarian two of the pups died. On Monday another two of the weakest of the litter died. This still leaves the Van der Merwes with 15 new-born pups that need to be fed and cleaned every two hours. Natalie has to take care of them because Jolie is unattached to them on account of the C-section. The remaining pups include eight bitches and seven males.

Mother of 19 puts the ‘great’ in Great Dane

After seeing daily suffering encountered by needy people at the Alverton Disabled Centre, Mr Johannes Hlabati decided to act. With no farming skills, and without a source of income, Hlabati and local women started a garden at the centre. “I couldn’t stay at home and do nothing while some human beings are starving. I asked for donations for seeds and a borehole in order to help the needy,” he said. Today, the garden has various veggies including spinach, cabbage, potatoes and onions. Hlabati said they struggled with seeds and other gardening tools and hoped locals would help with donations. The 19 people at Alverton Disabled Centre also lack shelter as the one-roomed house cannot accommodate them. Management of the centre pleaded for donations from the people of Tubatse.

the remarkable. The municipality has ensured thorn trees are planted all over town.

Motorists might have seen these trees on the R37 from Lydenburg. Others are next to the municipality’s chambers in the central business district. According to an insider, transgressors who remove or harm the trees will pay harsh penalties.

Environmental specialist, Mr Calvin Mojela said Tubatse had been a victim of illegal felling of trees in autumn.

“Those illegally removed from the streets include both indigenous and alien invasive trees.”

Mojela said street trees which were not felled, were damaged.

Mojela indicated that trees played a vital role in reducing the effects of climate change by absorbing air pollutants.

“They sustain the environment, in turn protecting food and natural medicines,” he added.

Steelburger/Lydenburg News tried to discover how the plants will be watered. At the time of going to print the newspaper did not get a comment from the municipality.

Roadside mechanics’ businesses are flourishing in Burgersfort

BURGERSFORT - Roadside mechanics are seen at every corner of town - are they simply entrepreneurs trying to earn a living,

Mr Piet Seboka has been repairing cars at roadsides for the past 16 years. He says he learned his mechanical skills from his brother and that he considers himself an entrepreneur. “I usually work on one to two cars per day, but when it is busy at the end of the month I do repairs on more than three vehicles at a time,” says Seboka. He adds that his customers know and trust him. “They come back every time when something is wrong with their vehicle or to get a full service.

from an old friend, Mr Mabee Mathebula after he was suspended from one of the mines. Having no source of income he has succeeded in his mission and made a name for himself. “I love my job and I will do it till the day I die,” says Mokoena.

Mr Nathaniel Jele who specialises in window tinting and trimming, says he can also do minor services on vehicles. His career as a self-taught mechanic started when he left high school seven years ago. “Clients trust me and come back because they know I do a good job. At the end of the month we are so busy that it’s hard to keep up,” said Jele.

Steelburger/Lydenburg News asked residents about their feelings regarding these mechanics. Most of the people say that as long as the entrepreneurs’ working areas are clean, they do not mind them doing business there. “It is better to create your own business instead of begging at street corners,” said Mr Ben Jordaan.

Radio station is back on air

LYDENBURG - After seven days of not airing any news and daily shows due to an internal dispute, Mash FM is now back on air.

On Wednesday August 17 employees stopped working and only music was broadcast.

When the newspaper visited the station, indeed the workers were not working. According to some members of management, the employees boycotted the station because they were not happy with the work ethics.

A memorandum, written by the employees, stated that funds were going out of the station’s bank account without accountability, the station’s property was being used for personal matters and other internal issues needed to be resolved for the sake of the daily running of the station.

Team members said they wanted the station to be operated according to the rules which every community station abides by.

When the newspaper contacted the manager of the station, Mr George Maphanga, he admitted they were having internal issues. “We are currently trying to resolve the problems and we promise that we will conquer. We are committed to resolving our internal issues and to achieve all the objectives we set for ourselves.”

The management and employees decided to set aside the challenges and continued with their mandate of community broadcasting with effect from August 24 at 00:00. “We want to apologise to the community. Please accept our sincere apology for the inconvenience caused,” said Maphanga.

More than just surprises are found in a glass of wine

LYDENBURG - The August Wine-tasting Guild meeting was a memorable event when it held a 75th birthday surprise for a member, Brian Whitehorn.

The guild met last Thursday at Café Crust. At every meeting, a speaker does a

2012, Thelema Muscat de Frontignan 2015, which was voted as “the value for money” wine, and Saronsberg Red Bordeaux Blend 2012 that was voted the wine of the evening.

The Wine-tasting Guild meets every third Thursday of a month at different venues in town. Every month a new topic is discussed and afterwards all attendees enjoy a meal together. The ANC’s, Ms Naomi Phala was elected as speaker of the council. She told the new councillors‚ “You need to focus your energy on putting the interest and welfare of people

Phala outnumbered the DA’s Mr Phineas Makofane in the votes. She garnered

There was a controversy as the EFF caucus raised multiple objections, indicating that it was “useless and worthless” for the GTFM to elect a chief whip. They also questioned the IEC’s decision to offer the ANC seven seats in the GTFM’s executive committee (Exco) while they were given two and the DA one seat.

The objections were directed to the new speaker who immediately took to the podium after being elected. “There is no need for a chief whip. It is time consuming and just a tactic of the ANC to divide the managerial positions. Speaker, there is no law that obliges the council to elect the chief whip.

“You are wasting the time of the elders and the traditional leaders in this house,” said

EFF member, Mr Walter Molapo.Phala seemed misplaced as the house

responded by telling Molapo that it was “common practice” for the municipality to have a chief whip. The EFF members also accused the new speaker of “being disrespectful and biased in the council”.

volgende mense:

Suzette van Build it; Luan Lombaard van Limpopo Ready Mix vir fondasie;

Wilmar van Rooyen van Ferrochrome Bricks and Paving vir bakstene; Lizl Grimbeek vir bouplanne, borge en skoolwapen; Marie van Flames Signs and Painting; Johan Grimbeek en Salomon Joubert; Bosboktak van SA Jagtervereniging vir die reël van skietdag ten bate van die skool;

Daar

is baie raakpunte.

“Ek verstaan haar net. Ek raak dié dinge aan in my opvoering.

Skoolkinders betaal net R100.

Boredom is something of the past for a Liquor City customer, Abram Thokwane. This lucky shopper was recently announced as the store’s winner in its Table Soccer competition. A delighted Thokwane told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that he would put the soccer table in his lounge where he would play with his family and friends. “I am a soccer fanatic, I will perfect my playing skills with this soccer table.” Josias Nkoana, manager of Liquor City, said the store ran a competition where buyers who bought either a 12-pack of Black Label beer or a 24, stood a chance to win the gadget. “He is a regular client, it was no surprise when his name was picked by SAB as the winner,” Nkoana said. The competition started on July 1 and ended on August 12. Here are Abram Thokwane and Josias Nkwana.

Analyst talks on the way forward after electionsLYDENBURG - The recent municipal

elections left the public with some uncertainty about the future. To help clear the air the Lydenburg/Mashishing Business Chamber invited well-known political analyst, Theo Venter to elaborate on this at their annual general meeting (AGM) in town on August 16, at the NG Suid church.

local government election since 1994. During his presentation, Venter touched on

several topics. According to him, the highly successful management of the recent local elections and emergence of stronger political competition, sent a positive message to investors and credit-rating agencies at a time when the economy needed it the most.

democracy which is now developing a degree of political maturity.

“Businesses and municipalities’ new political leadership need to seize the moment, sooner rather than later, to forge stronger relationships in order to intensify

cooperation. A key issue will be the greater responsiveness of municipalities to the needs of business and the strong encouragement of local entrepreneurship to help with job creation.”

Venter reckoned the quality of governance made a big difference to the performance of local authorities and their capacity to address issues like poverty. “There is a high

and the degree of ‘dysfunctionality’ of municipalities. The more dependent the local authority is on subsidies, the worse it seems to perform.”

According to Venter, only 26 million people of a possible 35 million registered to vote and only 15 million actually voted.

“More than 20 million either stayed away or did not participate in voting.

“They stayed away for the following

political system which is part of a political culture from pre-1994; voting against the party of liberation is emotionally too

and this is also part of a voting apathy.”

The new Toyota Aygo is tech

savvy, youthful and funkyToyota has unveiled its new Aygo X

play. The car is immediately available at Burgersfort Toyota on Dirk Winterbach Street.

The new Aygo has been given a complete makeover. It is more dynamic, boasts a striking design ethos geared towards youth, is feature-rich and comes complete with a whole range of personalisation packs so buyers can really stamp their own identity on the car.

It is very economical to run and boasts some great interior trims. It also has a touch screen infotainment system. The Aygo X play is easy to park. With the recession affecting budgets, the car is indeed a fuel saver.

The infotainment system is one of the best available in any small car. Its icons are crisp, bold and colourful and working through the menus is extremely simple.

Connecting your mobile phone via hands-free Bluetooth is particularly easy. It also

boasts audio jack and USB port. Even the entry-level model comes complete with features such as LED daytime running lights,

anchors, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. It’s worth spending the extra on X-play, the second trim level in the range, because it adds a leather steering wheel and gear lever over entry-level X trim’s plastic items. X-play trim and above also get more

which can be personalised to taste.Whichever trim you go for, the Aygo

feels solidly built and the ancillary controls. Two adults can sit comfortably in the front. There’s certainly enough head-, leg- and shoulder room. There are good-sized door pockets, while ahead of the gear lever is a large cubby hole incorporating two cup holders. Considering how small the Aygo is,

more than the handbook. The boot is larger than the old Aygo - from 29 to 168 litres with the seats upright.

Another plus factor is how well it coped on the motorways.

together with the New Hilux range, boast a new platform, engines, technology and design. Prices start from R238 400 (incl VAT) for the entry-level single-cab petrol, to R570 600 for the top-of-the-range, double-cab diesel.

When it comes to pricing, Toyota has remained competitive. It is a rare thing when a model is cheaper than its outgoing version it replaces. The 2016 Toyota Hilux has a more assertive, angular design compared to its chunky predecessor. The Hilux is longer and wider than the outgoing bakkie.

The Hilux is equipped with a new generation GD turbodiesel engine. The range comprises of 23 derivatives, with either petrol or diesel engines, including single-cab, double-cab and xtra-cab derivatives. Its 3.0-litre diesel unit has been replaced by a 2.8-litre diesel and the bakkie sports a new six-speed auto for the 4.0-litre V6 4x4 and 2.8 diesel 4x4 models. Hilux is known for its off-road capabilities and Toyota has merely made things simpler for their customers. The new Hilux is available in part-time four-wheel-drive derivatives, building on the acclaim of its forefathers.

A highlight of the new system is the

electronic rotary 4WD switch housed within the dashboard, which replaces the previously employed ‘second gear lever’. The driver can select between 2WD, 4WD and 4WD with low range, up to speeds of 50 km/h. The bakkie has an all-new rigid frame with enlarged side sections and cross-members that are larger and thicker and a mix of off-road performance and comfort.

driver assist features such as active traction control, Hill-Start Assist, and Downhill Assist Control. The exterior design, although recognisably Hilux, is clean and sleek. The grille is wider, tail lights larger and it comes in two new colours, namely Arizona Blue and Cosmic Red.

There is a new audio system with a tablet-

Pupils’ teeth get some love and affection

BURGERSFORT - Children from Calvin College’s preparatory school received free education on how to take care of their teeth when they visited the local dentist, Dr Eric Matlakala on August 18 and 19.

Matlakala ensured that they understood the importance of preserving healthy teeth from a young age. The kids then had their teeth examined, free of charge.

What was interesting and informative was when the young ones had opportunities to ask the dentist some questions regarding their teeth.

“After realising that our pupils’ teeth looked unhygienic, we decided to talk to Matlakala, who did not hesitate to help. He is such a compassionate person,” said grade one teacher, Ms Ida Esser.

“I check the condition of these children’s teeth free of charge, because I love kids. I showed them around my surgery, so they see how a dentist works,” said Matlakala.

“I love working with kids, they bring the best out of me. I spoke to the kids about

demonstrated to them how it is done,” he added.

To top it all off, the pupils received kiddie toothbrushes and toothpastes from this dentist.

Women urged to take hands to raise the nation

LYDENBURG - August is Women’s Month and local women held a prestigious event in celebration at Dankhof Guest House on Saturday.

The theme was “Ask until God unveils something tangible”.

This was the brainchild of Veliswa

The aim was to bring women of all ages, backgrounds and personalities together to support one another through the journey of womanhood. It was well attended and boasted local well-known speakers including Member of Parliament, Fridah Nkadimeng, and newly appointed speaker for TCM, Tiny Mabuza.

During the event speakers shared their life experiences.

According to Ndlovu, women need to start working together to conquer life’s challenges.

“When the idea crossed my mind, I shared it with my two friends and it became a common vision.”

Each speaker had a story to tell. According to Jane Sekhukhune, women need to stand up for themselves and work together so that they can raise a nation.

“As women, we need to realise that those days of being told our place is in the kitchen are long gone. Our place is anywhere we want it to be. During her presentation, Mabuza urged women to start praying for one another.

Let’s stop celebrating when others are going through challenges and lend a helping hand instead,” she said. The trio plans to hold more events in the future.

My company, Helping Hand For You, is a company focused on woman. We do laundry, cleaning and also professional domestic placements. We, as women, experience many challenges in the industry of owning our own business. People tend to think only men can be regarded as professionals. It sometimes feel like we as women have to proof ourselves. The truth, however, is that we don’t need to, your work speaks for yourself.”

Schools participate in National Science WeekSEKHUKHUNE - As the

biggest science council in Africa, the Council for

Research (CSIR) shared its knowledge of science with local pupils as part of the National Science Week (NSW) celebrations. CSIR visited two local schools, Kgahlanong Secondary in Longtill and Jane Furse Comprehensive in the Sekhukhune district and taught pupils about science experiments during their visits. At Kgahlanong, those from neighbouring schools like Makopole, Mashupje, Seokgome and Kgobetse secondaries joined in the lessons. At Jane Furse Comprehensive School, St Marks College, Leap Science and Maths School, and Rebone Secondary School attended the lectures. Among the attendees at both venues were representatives from the Limpopo Education Department and the Sekhukhune District Municipality’s emergency medical team (EMS) who also encouraged the pupils

Speaking at the events, Mr Charles Maphanga, CSIR’s outreach coordinator and also an MSc biophotonics candidate, said the council aimed to put the promotion of science and technology at its forefront.

such as defence peace safety and security, bio-sciences, high-performance computing, information communications and technology (ICT), human-capital development, materials science and manufacturing, Hydrogen South Africa infrastructure and the New Partnership For Africa’s Development - Southern Africa Network for Biosciences (Nepad-SANBio).

“This year’s NSW theme was, ‘Science

for Sustainable Development and Improved Quality of Life’. Scientists from different entities showcased at a number of workshops and exhibitions in conjunction with science talks to different audiences around the country,” Maphanga informed us. Ironically, Maphanga is a former pupil of Kgahlanong Secondary School. He also motivated schoolchildren to work hard and to not let their backgrounds determine their future. The event allowed more than 300 pupils the opportunity to experience interactive demonstrations and be exposed to different science, technology, engineering, mathematical and innovation

and exhibitions. The NSW is one of the Department of Science and Technology’s initiatives to celebrate and raise awareness of the role of science in society. The event was sponsored by the Optics Society of America (OSA) for its centenary celebration, and also the African Laser Centre (ALC). Gift bags and brochures for different courses that were related to maths and science were handed out.

Volgens me.
