*****The inaugural meeting of this Society was held at the Percival Guildhouse, Rugbyon October 6th 1949, sixteen members being enrolled. Present membership nowexceeds 60. It was intended that the society should cater for the needs of modelengineers and similar amateur craftsmen in the Rugby district both from a practicaland social point of view.

Soon after its' formation, the society was very fortunate in securing the use ofpermanent premises at the Hillmorton Community Centre, thus beginning a veryhappy association which has lasted ever since. The building (a brick built war timeair raid shelter) was converted by the addition of windows and suitable equipmentinto a workshop. From time to time the equipment has been improved andincludes a variety of machine and hand tools. The present policy is to provide toolswhich are not normally found in the amateur's home workshop.

Being a railway town, it was not surprising that a large part of the member's interest.was centred around steam locomotives and, at Hillmorton, was the ideal site for theconstruction of a miniature steam passenger hauling railway. Constructed to thedual gauges of 3t/2" and 5" gauge during the first few years after moving to theCentre, the original track was 328 ft. long. This was entirely re-built during thewinter of 1965 and is now 525 ft.long.The track has fully automatic three aspect colour light signalling with manual over-ride of the station and steaming bay areas provided by a fully interlocking 7 leverminiature lever frame housed in the signal box which is also fitted with an illuminatedtrack diagram.

Miniature traction engines are also well represented in the Society, there being plentyof room on the lawns for them to show their paces.

Other members construct a variety of workshop equipment, stationary models, etc.,the only requirement for membership being that the person should be activelyinterested in some form of model engineering.

From its inception, the Society has always held a series of winter lectures, originallyat the Percival Guildhouse but now in our own club room adjacent to the workshop. Many well known lecturers have given talks at these meetings on all branches ofthe model making art.

Visits have been held to places ofinterest and similar Societies, as far afield as theSouth Coast and Yorkshire.

Our portable miniature railway has given pleasure to literally thousands of children(some not so small) all over the midlands and we have tfuee times exhibited atBritain's premier agricultural show, the Royal Show at Stoneleigh.

Today, in our 2lst year, we present this exhibition in the hope that it will give somepleasure to many visitors and that it may encourage others to join us in thisfascinating hobby.
