Dear Friends,

With the Mondial in progress, I am sure that you, together with twobillion other viewers will be "visiting" France already this year. Maythe best team win!! (doesn't always happen).

There are now so many offers for cheap travel abroad that it reallyhas become cheaper than staying at home.

The close-by destinations are both varied and interesting and offereverything a holiday maker can possibly wish for.

Carol and I went to Crete for a long weekend, from Thursday toMonday, and stayed at the beautiful Knossos Royal. It is really one ofthe most beautiful Greek islands, with magnificent scenery, history andbeaches. And, of course, just plain Greece!!! Tavemas and veryfriendly people.

The first of our two Brenda Miller Tours returned from Russia andto quote the participants, it was an "exceptional experience." We willkeep you informed of future tours.

The summer rush is on with many people looking for ways to "beatthe heat." Please call us and we will be happy to assist you in all yourtravel plans.

Call Arthur and ask about the new weekend fares to Johannesburg -you may be surprised.

Best Regards,

Terry KesselManaging Director

SUITABLE' PREMISES"Are you sure this is their head ojfice? " asked

the horrified overseas businessman of the Israelitaxi driver who braked suddenly in front of ashabby lego-shaped building in Tel Aviv. "Thisplace looks like it is about to collapse," he remarked suspiciously, thinking the taxi driver hadmade a mistake. "This where I am about to ne

gotiate a multi-million dollar deal!?" he ponderedas he panted up three flights, working up a nicesweat in his Armani suit.

This scenario, typical only a few yearsago, represents today little more thansatire from a period piece from Israel's

recent past. The Israeli work environment haschanged almost beyond recognition as the paceof local architecture has forged ahead at abreathtaking speed, transforming the Israelibusiness community in the process. In our coverstory on page 18, we take a look at some SouthAfricans who are not only part of the process, but are spearheading this movement.

A taxi driver waits outside the glass and chromecorporate headquarters of a software companyin Herzliya Pituach's industrial area. The overseas businessman makes his way past the waterfall in the lobby before climbing into the taxi. Heis wide-eyed in amazement as he takes in the commercial development all around him. Thinks thetaxi driver, "You could do with a new suit. YourArmani is beginning to look a bit tattered roundthe edges."

IN THE MAILTALE OF TWO SHU IS

Dear Editor,I refer to the photograph on page 9 taken in

1952 on the steps of the Parow Shul in your April1998.

Imagine my feelings when looking at me outof the picture {sitting at the right end) is my lateuncle Mikey Cohen (my late Mom's youngerbrother). Mikey was an ardent Zionist who in 1956went to London with his wife and desparately illchild for treatment.

During an intermission in the treatment Mikey, who had never been in Israel and being so near, decided to fulfil a dream and visit Israel for afew days. It was not to be. His El A1 flight fromLondon to Tel Aviv never made it. It was shot

down by a Russian plane while flying over Bulgarian airspace. 1 later heard that the plane hadbeen downed because of a spy on board,

Dear Editor,

It was a small hall - the shul in Parow back inthe early years. There was a minyan almost everyday. In the afternoons, Rubbi Lipshitz heldcheder for the Barmitzvah boys. On Sundays weheld the Bnei Zion meetings.

In the 1950s, a new shul was built - much bigger - with Ezrat Nashim upstairs. 1 remember standing in the guard of honour in full Bnei Zion uniform at the laying of the foundation stone by LuluBerold. Many of those in that guard of honour

T I P P I N G A T I N H A TDear Editor,1 wish to pay a further tribute on the passing

of a great human being - Simie Weinstein. I toowas on active service during the last great war1939-1945, and as a prominent life member ofthe Memorable Order of Tin Hats, Johannesburg,1 salute this fine man.

We made aliyah in 1972, and my late, dearlybeloved wife, Hettie, an Afrikaner of the finestkind, latterly Jewish, became the first ever appointed accountant to the then recently establishedSouth African Consulate General. With hardly anyknowledge of Hebrew, she carried out her tasksin an exemplary manner. And who should be awilling collaborator assisting in so many ways?None other than Simie Weinstein.

Most people blend into their societies withoutcontributing to great ideals. Not Simie and HettieThey were shining lights, and I would like to thinkthat a few were influenced by them.

The Nabateans were a

smart lot, but they neverthought of it. King Solomonwas a wise man, and it mostcertainly didn't occur to him. Ittook a former South African. Professor Reuven Yagil, to come upwith the delicktable idea of making icecream from camel milk. "Why not?queries Reuven. "Camel milk is extremelylow in fat, non-saturated and completelyhomogenized. Not only that, it tastes good!"

More than the main ingredient in your bananasplit or waffle topping, camel byproducts can meanthe difference between life and death in many partsof the underdeveloped world. Camels,on the other hand, thrive under such conditions."Reuven and his team are trying to introduce theminto impoverished regions of West and East Africa. As we were about to go,a few UN officials were kidnapped in Somalia,so we thought it best to delay our trip for a while. We intend to go in a few months, spend a shortperiod of time examining the feasibility of introducing camels, and if it seems possible, wewill return to Merkaz Sapir with Somalis whomwe w i l l t r a i n . "

Reuven is now preparing for a trip toKazakhistan and China to set up commercial enterprises using their "two-humped camels whichproduce a high-fat milk." Right now, Merkaz Sapirhas a representative in Turkmenistan negotiat

the grade with the rabbis? "Well, yes and no,"smiles Reuven who came to Israel in 1956 as partof a Nahal group. "There is a bit of an argumentas to its kashriit. Most of the Sephardim, whomay have been brought up with camel milk intheir native countries, have no problems with it.But for the Ashkenazim it is taboo following onfrom the bible directive of not eating camel."

Well, kosher or not, many visitors to the SapirCenter will return home having had a taste of asumptious new desert dessert.

The Machal reunion has generated a lot of interest in Israel. Smoky explains, "The IDF is planning to include the Machal story in officer training courses as part of the history of the IDF. TheDepartment of Education is also very interestedin fitting it into the school curriculum, and theForeign Office is sending out material to embassies and consulates as they feel it will be of interest to Jewish communities abroad." Descendants of the Moses Family of India at the President i residence in Jerusalem.(David and Jill Cohen ofKochav Yair on far right)

RETURN HOSPITALITYDuring World War II, a young Royal Air Force

fighter pilot from Palestine on a training missionto India ended up at an RAF base in Bangalore, then a small town in Southern India. One day, during their free time, the pilots searched for so-called 'snake boots", leather boots much in vogueat the time. Bangalore had only one shoe shop ofrepute, "Rubin Moses Shoes," and its clientele included the likes of Winston Churchill.

The young pilots entered the store. One ofthe two Moses brothers who was assisting them, said to the other in Arabic so that the customerswould not understand, "That one looks like oneof us." To their amazement, they were answeredin Arabic, "Yes, I am one of yours." The voicebelonged to Ezer Weizman.

The Moses family, proprietors of Rubin Mo

ses Shoes, was the only Jewish family in Bangalore at the time. In keeping with the tradition of hospitality(hacnasat orchim), they hostedmany Jews serving with the British forces during the war years. EzerWeizman was to be just another Jewish se r v i ceman who a t t ended F r i

day night dinner at the Moses family during those difficult years. He

I was also one of the many Jewishservicemen who signed his name in

the visitors book at the Moses home.Years passed, the Moses parents passed on and

most of the seven children left Bangalore forCanada, Australia, England and South Africa. Asfor Ezer Weizman, we all know what has becomeo f h i m !

In 1997, Ezer Weizman, as Israel's President, once again visited India. Due to inclement weather,he was forced to stop over in Bangalore. Duringthis stopover, he made contact with the Mosesfamily who had showed him hospitality so manyyears before. The widow of one of the brothersmet with Ezer and Reuma Weizman, and togetherthey found his signature in the visitors' book.

Ezer remarked how sad it was that not one of

the Moses family had ended up in Israel — afterall, here was a family with traditional Jewishvalues, whose rightful place should be with their

brethren in the Promised Land. However, had heknown the whole story, he wouldn't have been sad.

One of the seven Moses children, Kathleen, had moved to Johannesburg after the War whereshe married and bore two sons. Her eldest son,the writer, came on aliyah with his family in March1997. My younger brother came on aliyah withhis family in 1988.

My mother, Kathleen Cohen, nee Moses, visited Lsrael in January 1998 for the Bar Mitzvahof my eldest son. She had heard from the remainingMoses family in Bangalore about Ezer Weizman'svisit and felt it was time to set the record straight.Ezer Weizman was informed by letter that his disappointment that no Moses family members livedin Israel was misplaced. Avraham and mentioned proteas, he sighed,"Proteas! I have been living and breathing proteasfor the past twenty-five years." The first material for raising this South African beauty wasbrought in the early 70s, but despite attempts bygrowers, among them former South African LenKalo of Sde Niizan, the protea wouldn't take toIsraeli soil. Yaakov, who spent a year inStellenbosch and remains in constant contact withSouth African experts explains, "The South African fynbos grows in a very poor and acid soil. Here in Israel, the soil is base. Our solution is tograft protea plants onto rootstocks which thrivein a base soil."

The research into proteas has been going onfor over two decades. "My Israeli colleague, AlexAckerman, spent time at the Agricultural ResearchCenter Fynbos near Stellenbosch and South African Professor Harold Yakobs spent a sabbatical here. The protea species that has taken roothere in a big way is the smaller, more decorative

leucodendron, or safari sunset, of which 20 million are now grown annually in Israel.Nurseries have been trained in the graftingof seedlings which are then planted on alarge scale in the the Galilee and theGolan." So if you want to put someproteas in your vase this weekend or adda little floral nostalgia to your garden, pop in at one of the six nurseries whichnow specialize in proteas. Ya'akov seesa great future for Israeli growers. "Wenow have the rootstocks to grow theleucosperm (pincushion) and the

DIFFERENT MAGAZINE, SAME IDEAHow do a lot of good ideas get around? Often over coffee in someone's living room. The differ

ence between Nina Yavitz's idea and most is that hers got off the ground. Nina, formerly of Zimbabwe and Johannesburg, was sitting in her friend Rutie's Tel Aviv apartment telling her about MoloSongololo, a tri-lingual South African magazine for which she had contributed some artwork andillustrations. "Molo Songololo is written in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa. It gives children in virtually segregated communities what is often their only opportunity to see each other as humanbeings through stories, games and puzzles," explains Nina. Rutie pored over Molo Songololo, andthen looked up at me. It was clear as day to the both of us. This is just what we need in Israel! Achildren's magazine in Hebrew and Arabic."

The idea took root like a seed of hope transplanted from one continent to the next. What followed was three years of talking, convincing, networking and writing. Today, "Windows-

Channels for Communication" celebrates its third year of reaching thousands of Jewish and Arabchildren all over Israel. With articles on sports, computers, music, nature, art and more, childrenlearn that they are more alike than different. Nina is cautiously optimistic. "We cannot expect people's feelings to change with the signing of a document. It takes time and a great deal of educationalwork to overcome years of fear and hatred. We try to open the eyes and hearts of Arab and Jewishchildren, and through them to bring about a real and permanent change."

D e a r F r i e n d ,

As you are no doubt aware, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Polandhave for the past few years been the focus-point for investment. Since thefall of communism, investors throughout the western world have made largeinvestments in these countries. These individual investors together withmany multi-national corporations are generally very satisfied with theiri n v e s t m e n t s .Romania, with its skilled and cultured population in excess of 23 mil.,manufactures and produces everything from aircraft and cars, to basiccommodities. During the communist era, the country's potential was neverexploited. However, since the formation of a new government, with a setpolicy of privatisation and economic reforms, foreign investors have beguninvesting in this emerging and promising economy.Recently both the Israeli and South African governments have relaxedexchange control regulations, making it possible for residents of bothcountries to spread their investments. As a result of these changes, aninternational investment group has been created for the purpose ofinvesting in Romania - Israel's largest trading partner in Eastern Europe. The investment group, of which I am a part, has set up an infrastructure inBucharest for the acquisition of real-estate in this fast-growing modern city, solely for occupation by ex-patriots and multi-national corporations, ofwhich there are in excess of 10,000 and 1,000 respectively. Theinfrastructure is comprised of internationally recognised propertyconsultants and brokers, tax experts, financial consultants, auditors andlawyers, who together are able to ensure that the properties acquired willprovide investors with secure and economically attractive returns on theircapital. This is undoubtedly a "Window of Opportunity" which offerssecure and attainable nett returns in the region of 20% p.a., and as such issincerely recommended.

I'd be happy to supply you with further details.

OVER STORY David Kaplan and Becky Rowe report

Where do people spend most of their waking hours ? Work it out. Glued to their television or PC?On the golfcourse or with the family? - No, none of these. The average adult Israeli spends themajority of his or her time at work. It should be axiomatic that today's commercial society should besensitive to the quality of the working environment. Is this the case?

SETTING NEW STANDARDS

Even to the casual observer, Israel's architectural landscape has undergone an impressivemetamorphosis. Stereotypical utilitarian building spawned in the years of a struggling economyhas given way in recent times to a surge of creative energy and talent finding expression in

commercial, residential, cultural and industrial properties. The language of Israel's architecture today articulates an increasingly affluent society that can afford the costs of redefining the workplace.

The opening in recent months of two spectacular industrial complexes reveals South Africans atthe forefront of this movement. The architect behind both projects is Harry Brand, a former SouthAfrican and associate professor at the architectural school of the Technion. He has designed some ofIsrael's more prestigious industrial facilities, from the Tefen Industrial Park in the Galilee to Jerusalem's Malha Industrial Park. The $35 million Beck Science Centre in Har Hotzvim Industrial Park inJerusalem, was financed by South African coal magnate Graham Beck, and the steel-wire manufacturing factory, Barzelan in Beit Shemesh is part of Mendel Kaplan's Capegate Group.

"Beck made it clear that hedidn't want a building thatcatered to passing fancies andfashions," explains Harry. "Itshould be timeless — goodtoday and good in a hundredyears' time. He was concernedthat while incorporating stateof the art hi-tech facilities, itshould respect the environment and reflect the character of Jerusalem." Listeningto Harry, it is clear that he relished the challenge. "Integrating these concepts, we combined traditional Jerusalem.stone with modern buildingmaterials such as aluminumcurtained walls and reflectiveglass."

Until President Weizmanopened the Beck ScienceCenter this past May, few Israelis had ever heard ofGraham Beck. However, he is no newcomer to Israel. His grandfather, Yeshaya Mizrachi, moved fromJerusalem to South Africa in 1880. and became the

first rabbi of theT r a n s v a a l ' s s m a l lJewish community.Beck has been a ma

jor donor to Ben-Gurion and Bar IlanUniversities, as wellas to the WeizmannInstitute. Expandinghis involvement in Israel beyond the philanthropic, Beck'smove into the industrial real estate marketcame as a result ofmany conversationswith his long-time Israeli friend, RamRhone, former CEOofthe Israeli NationalCoal Corporation.Ram is today manag

ing director of Beck-Tech, the corporation whichbuilt the Science Centre. "It is the most beautiful industrial building in Israel," says Ram,who was on-site daily for two and a half years,

overseeing every detail of what has beennicknamed the h i -tech temple.

" B e c a u s e t h eBeck Science Centreis a hi-tech building,"continues Harry, "thechallenge was to aesthetically integratethe highly complicated electro-mechanical systems. We designed a series of modular ducts andchases and incorporated them as decorative elements in the facade." What appear to be largeclassical columns of Jerusalem stone, are in factservice ducts. The decorative wall around the roofconceals pumps, fans and filters." Stepping backto view the building in its totality, we sense thatit is not a juxtaposition of tastes, but a carefullycrafted fusion of contrasting styles and materials.

Designed as a smart building, it boasts a sophisticated control network of sensors to moreefficiently manage the building. Intended as a rentalfacility, the tenants are primarily hi-tech companies producing both software and hardware. "Thepeople who work in these industries are graduates of the best universities," stresses Harry, "coming up with products at the cutting edge in theworld markets. They deserve the best premises. This is exactly what Beck had in mind." The projectis one of the largest ever financed by a singleforeign investor. Beck admits, "I'm no Einstein, and to tell you the truth, I was never interested inhi-tech, but I know that what Israel has to offeris brains. These people deserve the best and that

is what we are going to givethem!"Much more than justa pretty face, the Beck Science Centre o ffers i ts ten

ants a unique working environment. Standing on a12.5 dunam site with 19,000sq. metres of lettable space and a further 20,000for parking and technical services, the buildingis luxurious with a health club and a large comfortable cafeteria. The most striking element ofthe building is the large atrium. "Crowned with alarge dome," continues Harry, "it occupies an areaof 700 sq metres which will serve as a space forcultural and social gatherings. There will be artexhibitions and concerts — a place where not onlythe workers can relax, but a space which will attract visitors."

Harry, a WITS graduate, who made aliyah withhis wife Evelyn in 1962, was unknown to Beck."He shlepped me around Johannesburg pointingout landmark buildings trying to impress uponme the kind of standards he wanted." Harry laughs,"After all, he wasn't in for a cheapskate speculative building and he thought he needed to educate this chatis from Germi.ston." Beck needn'thave worried. The result is - in Beck's omvi words

"beyond our wildest dreams."

A half an hour's scenic drive west from theBeck Science Centre brings us to a wire drawingand specialised coating factory on 45 dunams ina wooded industrial park overlooking BeitShemesh. "We have set up the most highly sophisticated, and certainly the most aesthetic factory of its kind in the world." beams DavidKaplan. Mendel's eldest son and general man-

agerof the new factory. "In this competitive business, you have to keep your edge to make it inthe international market. That means having themost efficient machines available and obviouslycompetent, skilled and ultimately workers.I want to create an environment in which myemployees will want to come to work."

"David was concerned with all aspects of theworking environment." says Harry,"from lighting, toventi lat ion to aes

thetics." ContinuesDavid. "12,000 .sq.m e t r e s o f

All our machines, some of which run theentire length of the plant, are painted in colourspleasing to the eye as are the interior walls. Potted trees and plants are scattered throughout thework area introducing greenery to the factory floor. As a further softener, the central control area isdesigned to look like a Wendy House with a pitchedred-tile roof and a quaint wooden door. "

The factory windows, running along the perimeter, reach down to waist-level, unlike in mostfactories where they are closeto ceiling height. The attractivelight fixtures give off a blueglow, much easier on the eyethan the regular white light. Special transluscent .sheets in the

ceiling let in natural light whichmakes for a particularly pleasant atmosphere. Barzeian employees, whether on the factoryfloor, in the central office or inthe spacious semi-circular dining room, can enjoy breathtaking views of the green Judeanh i l l s .

Near'm^ completion, the exterior of Barzeian's stajf dining room.

More than just a concern for the working environment is an ecological commitment. Barzeianhas solved an environmental waste problem byintroducing an expensive process of recycling hydrochloric acid which the factory uses in abundance. "Nothing is dumped," says David emphatically. "Anything that we can't use, we can sell.In no other wire factory in the world do they do

1~ELFED TIDINGSand image of the Zionist Federation in South Africa. "We have to become pro-active instead ofreactive, and re-stake our position in the Jewishcommunity. I have initiated the establishment ofthe Gauteng Council in which all the major Jewish organizations will be represented. To emphasize the importance of Israel, the shlichim willalso sit on the council. Their input is invaluable."Kenny is interested in seeing new faces, new ideasand new enthusiasm. "I want this council to benot only younger in age, but younger in spirit."In addition, Kenny is going out to recruit prominent personalities in the community. This freshapproach is reflected in the newly formed Boardof Trustees which meets quarterly. "I want thesepeople to speak on our behalf and give us theadded dimension we need."

Asked whether he felt the spirit of Zionismstill prevailed in South Africa's Jewish community, Kenny replied animatedly, "No question aboutit. There is no division between Judaism and Zionism, one presupposes the other. I see no causefor pessimism as far as Jewish life is concerned. We may be a little older and fewer, but Jewishlife is vibrant. Look at the Yom Ha'atzmaut celebrations this year — the best we have had foryears. Over 4000 attended, and we had to turnaway more than a thousand.

At our recent Israel Fair, over 5000 people camefor a taste of Israel. Now we have to work hardon follow-up. But I am optimistic. Our kids areas enthusiastic about Israel as they ever were."

Listening to a confident Kenny, excited aboutthe challenges ahead, one is left with an impression of winds of change, not just wind.

THE CASE OF THEMISSINC CHANNEL

Viewers were horr ified when somemonths ago, instead of seeing a Five-nations Rugby Match, they sawa snowy screen. And we 1are not talking about win- #'ter sports. Channel 16 was V #off, and we are - you knowwhat we mean. The spokesmanfor the TV Cable Company gave a number of reasons for the dead screen that had been until re

cently alive with sports broadcasts. One was thatduring a recent survey, only four persons werewatching Star Sports (!!!) and another that StarSports had been "encrypted" and its "footprint"was no longer available in the Middle East.

Acting in response to public outcry, Telfed tookthe initiative to establish a committee, namedSporting World, to investigate the matter andlobby the Ministry of Communications and theCable Company to find a suitable replacement.Involved in the lobby are the English-speakingolim associations as well as those of India, Germany, Scandinavia. In addition, many sports organizations have allied themselves with the cause.

Hertzel Katz, co-convener of SportingWorld, along with Stanley Perlman, takes issuewith the statement that only four people werewatching the sports channel. It was later allegedthat fewer than ten people had written the CableCompany to protest the disappearance of the channel, when in fact thousands of signatures of deprived viewers were sent to the Ministry. cheese? No, about the numbers that are bandied about interminably in an attempt to

define the chunk of land that Israel is possibly willing to relinquish to the Palestinians aspart of the Oslo Accords. As progress towards peace appears at a standstill, Telfed

Magazine spoke to former Pretorian, Dov Randal, who arranged the fateful luncheonwhich eventually led to Rabin shaking hands with Arafat on the White House lawn.

It was on a hot Wednesday afternoon in Aprilof 1992, and Dov had arranged for Yossi Beilinto meet Terje Rod Larsen at Tandoori, the Indian restaurant off Dizengoff Circle. Dov had agut feeling that these two visionaries would connect, but did not foresee the far-reaching consequences of that lunchtimec o n v e r s a t i o n . D o v h a dbeen nurturing contacts inthe Norwegian LabourMovement as part of hisr o l e i n t h e H i s t a d r u t ' sPolitical Department andwas keen to raise the level

a n d c a l i b r e o f c o n t a c t .

La rsen was the d i rec to rof an internationally respected Norwegian Research Institute, workingon projects relating to theliving standards of the Palestinians.

Beilin was eager to dispense quickly with whathe saw as another one of those merely obligatoryengagements that would probably go nowhere.Randal tells us, "As gefiite fish was about thespiciest delicacy his palate could manage, Beilinordered a diet coke assuming that when he finished it, the meeting would be over." A lot a dietcokes and four hours later, Beilin and Larsen werest i l l hudd led in heated d iscuss ion. "The wai te rswere impatiently hovering around the table makingsigns for us to leave."

It was Spring 1992, the tail-end of Shamir'sgovernment, preceding the 1992 elections. "Certainly nothing was going to come out of the Washington Talks, and Madrid was dead. Both Larsen

political wherewithal. The direction became clearwhen Larsen produced as his trump card his closefriendship with the Norway's Deputy Foreign Minister. He suggested that he use his good officesto set up a secret Israeli-Palestinian channel." Following the luncheon, Israeli academics. Professors Hirshberg and Pundak, who were both associated with Beilin's Economic Cooperation Foundation, met with Palestinian academics, amongthem Abu Allah and Libdi, in London.

"The meetings began as an academic exercise, but gained momentum through the perserveranceof Uri Savir, who was at that time Director-General of the Foreign Ministry, and Yoel Zinger whohad been involved with the Washington Talks.Contacts developed slowly as the academics dis-

pEATUREcussed each aspect of Palestinian - Israeli coexistence - economic, security, cultural, agriculturaland political cooperation."

How did these talks graduate from the ivorytower to the negotiating tables in Oslo? "Thereare three reasons. Firstly, when it was clear thatthese 'academic' discussions were leading somewhere, Beilin apprised Peres, who recognized theimportance of these talks. Peres then approachedRabin, who was at first skeptical. Eventually hewas utterly convinced of their necessity and threwhis full weight behind the talks. Secondly, thesetalks gained credibility by the inclusion of official PLC leaders, the true representatives of thePalestinian people. At that time, it was illegal forIsraelis to meet with the PLC. Thirdly, I believethat Larsen's personality and sheer doggednesssealed its success. When the talks moved to Oslo,

they almost fell through a number of times. Therewas always something to be ironed out, and Larsenand his wife, senior assistant to the Foreign Minister. were always there, going in and out of rooms, passing on messages. The timing was right. It wasa case of the right people at the right lime."

Sitting at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony inOslo, Dov "felt proud of the small role that I playedin a process that turned out to have such hugeramifications. Seeing Rabin. Arafat and Peres onthe podium. I thought of what it took to get themthere, and what was most amazing was that wemanaged to keep a lid on it."

In the wake of the signing of the Oslo Accords,positive contacts began evolving in many spheres.Under the auspices of the Histadrut, Dov broughta contingent of Israeli and Palestinian women toOslo for a conference to establish working relationships amongst labour leaders who, only a shortperiod before, would have had nothing to do withe a c h o t h e r. " T h e i d e a o f t h e a c c o r d s w a s t o

change the nature of the relationships betweenPalestinians and Jews. The Oslo Accords werenever intended to be an end in itself, but a meansto an end. In tandem with the political process, itwas also a 'people's process," as ordinary folkstarted to make overtures across the divide. Peo

ple today forget the immediate dividends of theOslo accords - the Casablanca economic confer

ence, previously-closed markets opened up toIsrael, Israeli businessmen flying to nearly everycomer of the Arab world, joint security cooperation, cultural and sports ties, you name it. I remember even reading in Telfed Magazine aboutIan Froman flying to Qatar and young Jordanians coming to Israel to play squash.

"A true testimony to the effectiveness of theOslo Accords was the signing of the peace treatywith Jordan. Undoubtedly, that was a byproductof Oslo. In 1995,1 began working with the 'Norwegian Business House' trying to encourage jointventures between Norwegian companies, Israelis and Palestinians. But by the time we got anything going, it was already too late. After Rabin'smurder, the bombings and the election ofNetanyahu, things began to unravel. Even Morocco has withdrawn its representatives from Israel." Dov chuckles, "At least we still have Micronesia behind us."

How does Dov, who was there from the beginning, feel about what was so promising nowbeing reduced to a few percentage points? Thisformer Pretoria boy is not deterred. He is stilltrying to coordinate Israeli-Palestinian people-to-people contacts. "1 think one of the problems wasthat people simply weren't prepared for it. It hitthem like a thunderbolt. One day, Abie Nathanwas in jail for talking to PLC leaders and a fewdays later, Rabin was shaking their hands. Yet,we musn't become despondent over the currentstandstill. It's a hiccup. Maybe a big hiccup, hutat the end of the day, the people and not the politicians will push the process fonvard. "

Abt drives northwardfrom his hometown ofKiryat Gat, past the fertile plains and rollinghills of Lachish Region,he can look with prideat what was been ac

Greenhouses, vineyards, orchards, fieldsand forests have transformed this once rockyand sparse terrain into Israel's verdant heartland. Over four decades, Lachish became hometo thousands of immigrants and their childrenwho established moshavim, kibbutzim and townsand amongst those spearheading this wave ofland settlment was Yitzchak Abt.

Yitzchak, who rose through the ranks ofHabonim, had his first taste of Israel in 1950 onthe Machon LeMadrichei Hutz La 'Aretz. "It wasduring the Tzena [period of austerity]. There wasso little food. Nearly everything was imported, and the only things that weren't rationed wereolives, oranges, jam and bread." A decade before JFK's memorable call to the American people, Yitzchak asked what he could do for the youngState of Israel, rather than what it could do forhim. Certain that agriculture was the key toIsrael's ability to survive, he returned to SouthAfrica and enrolled in agriculture at StellenboschUniversity. Five years later, armed with a degree and some experience under his belt, Yitzchakbecame part of a team which planned for the development of the Lachish Region. "It was a veryexciting period. Far-reaching change oftencomes about because of some

H o l l a n d w h e r e h e o b s e r v e d t h eflower market at work. Upon hisreturn, he and ten other Cochinifamilies set up the first Israeli greenhouses forroses. Today Moshav Shachar is the largest producer of roses in Israel.

Faced with the mass immigration of the early50s and the need to become agriculturally self-sufficient, Israel rapidly produced a cadre of professionals whose expertise was sought by developing nations around the world. In 1962, Yitzchakmet with the Minister of Planning in the new democracy of Venezuela. "He sought advice onagrarian reform and pressed our Foreign Officeto send me there for two months. I established an

interdisciplinary team of economists, agronomists, and engineers to lead a planning operation in theprovince of Los Mohanos covering 300,000dunam. So impressed were they with our programme for the rural settling of landless peoplethat the Minister conjured up plans to have usreturn for a long-term assignment. This was abreakthrough for Israel. 1 was sent to Venezuelaas an agricultural attache. We trained professionalsand set up a training centre for interdisciplinarydevelopment work. I was later assigned to head

all agricultural programmes in Latin America, andwhen I completed my term in 1967, there were55 experts on long-term assignment in rural development and agrarian reform."

Back in Israel, Yitzchak was appointed as headof the Center for Interna

tional Agricultural Development Cooperation. "TheCenter trains thousands of

people in agriculture indifferent languages - Russian, Arabic, Spanish,French and English- about1600 trainees every year.Did you know that out ofthe 1600 students, 500 areEgyptian?" Seeing ourpuzzled expressions,Yitzchak explains, "Thesepositive things don't getinto the press because theyare not dramatic enough. No blood and gore, youknow." Today, Israel is en

gaged in a range of both public and private projectsin Egypt. "We have been working with the Egyptian Minister of Agriculture, Yusuf Wali, sincehe came into office 14 years ago. As far as he isconcerned, there should be no impediments to ourcooperation. We have an open phone line to him."

The Center is engaged in a wide range of fascinating projects. For South Africans who havea penchant for juicy lamb chops, the Center's research into the Awassi sheep would be of interest. "Genetic material developed over many yearsproduces a type of sheep with top quality meatand high yields of milk. Although Israel can neverreally be a sheep producer because of land limitation, we can continue to be a source of expertise. Our strategy is to become the supplier of thelucrative motherstock for a sheep whose meat ismuch more favored than that imported from Australia and New Zealand. Many of our neighbours- Turkey, Jordan and the Gulf States - have expressed interest in the Awassi.

Retired from the Center last year, Yitzchak isnow agricultural consultant to the Peres Center

for Peace. He i.s upbeat about the opportunitiesfor future projects. The Peres Center presentsworkable models of coexistence, introducing asmany people as possible to the tangible benefitsof peace. "One of our projects involves teamingup with the private sector in Jordan to prepare abusiness plan establishing a joint agriculturalexport marketing company. The company wouldnot compete with Israeli export, but rather complement it. Drawn up in conjunction with the RoyalScientific Society of Jordan, the plan has beenwell-received in both our countries, as well asby the World Bank."

Yitzchak praises Peres' international standingand contacts that have lead to great strides in regional cooperation. "His friendship with Barillo,Italy's biggest pasta producer, for instance, engendered an innovative agricultural program."Yitzchak explains that, "pasta is made from hard, durham wheat as opposed to bread which is madefrom the soft variety. Barillo decided he wouldcontribute to the peace process by canvassing the

viability of growing durham wheat on a large-scale in the Middle East. The Center is now con

ducting trials . If it works and I think it will, theBarilla company will buy the products from theMiddle East instead of from the U.S. Israel 's ultimate niche will be in the production of qualityseeds and providing motherstock."

' ^ I s r a e l h a s b e c o m e a m e c c a f o r k n o w h o win all fields of agriculture. Our government has, over the years, spent a lot of money on researchand development and today, its farmers are probably amongst the most knowledgeable in the world.Think about it... the parents of many of our farmerswere completely inexperienced in modern agriculture and in some cases, illiterate." With all thelimitations of water and land, Israel is able to feeditself, and the money earned from agricultural exports exceeds food imports. As Israel now servesas an example of agricultural self-sufficiency toother countries, Yitzchak Abt serves as an example of how one individual can make a difference to the lives of many. •

t - m a x l e a v e s a n i m p r e s s i o nIt should come as a surprise that

someone with a name like Maxie Garb is inthe shmatta business?

In a country that enjoys summer for a goodpart of the year, what do you suppose wouldbe the most popular apparel? You guessed it

- T-shirts. Strolling on the promenade, hangingout in the mall, off to themovies and even in the office, Israelis of all ages canbe found in T-shirts. Maxi©Garb, formerly of EastLondon, and his American-born wife, Marsha, set outto carve their niche in Israel's highly competitivecasualwear market. Afterleaving Kibbutz Tzora,Marsha, a graphic designer, and Maxie, a photographer, pooled their talents to create a business that now supplies custom-designed t-shirts throughout Israel. "It r a v e l 6 0 0 0 k i l o m e t r e s amonth visiting shops at tourist spots from Eilat to RoshHanikra. In some shops weare given an indication ofwhat they want, and we thencreate the design. Otherwise, we come up withthe illustration and then market it. Most of the T-shirts sold in Masada, for instance, are ours." Maxieand Marsha supply shirts to, among others, theLlama Farm at Mitzpe Ramon, the Dolphin Reefin Eilat, HaOn Ostrich Farm, as well as to giftshops along the Kinneret, Dead Sea, Eilat and atmost of the National Parks. "We silkscreen company logos, make t-shirts for visiting overseasgroups and sports teams and clubs." The new T-Max factory and retail outlet on Kibbutz Yad Hannaare open to the public and well worth a visit.

Keeping up with the pace of events, colourful renditions of "what's happening on the Israelscene" are quick to appear on T-Max T-shirts. "TheAmerican Embassy commissioned shirts for Gore'svisit on Yom Ha'atzmaut," and with the expectedtnfusion of tourists ushering in the new millenium,Maxie and Marsha are hoping to capitalise on theyear 2000.

Lydia Weitzman reportsOver Yom Ha'a lzmaut ,

Telfed, cooperated with theMunicipality of Ra' anana inhosting the final leg of an adventurous Keren Hayesodtrip from South Africa. Thewhirlwind tour, "From Rigato Ra'anana," took some 25participants in search of theirroots as they traced a pathfrom destruction to rebirth, coinciding with the 50th anniversary celebrations in Israel.

For Bertha Englander, at 83 the oldest member of the delegation, this was more than a tripdown memory lane. It was final proof that theJewish people had survived the worst genocidein history, a personal triumphant victory despitefamily loss.

"I returned to my town after 70 years, and remembered everything in such vivid detail," Bertha relates with trembling excitement in her voice."Most of the group were visiting their parents'villages, but I was coming back to the very homeI had left as a child of 13 with my eldest sister."

"As we entered Dusak, I looked for the oldmarket-place and synagogue, in order to get mybearings. We got off the bus and suddenly thereit was, my house just as I remembered it. I wantedto cry. I wanted to hug that house in my arms."From there. Bertha and the group went to the massgrave in the forest outside of the village. "As amember of our group recited Kaddish, I knewthen that we had beaten Hit ler."

I t was f rom th is emot iona l ro l le rcoas te r tha tthe group flew into Israel to celebrate Israel'sjubilee... and finally close the circle. Mayor Ze'evBielski in welcoming the delegation, urged thevisitors to join the hundreds of South African famil ies who have made Ra'anana the i r home. Af ter

all, it boasts "the closest thing to South Africa in

Israel." The newly consecrated Shivtei Yisraelsynagogue has been fitted with the interior furnishings of the old Parow synagogue. Addressing the group from the very pulpit where yearsbefore he had celebrated his bar mitzvah back in

Plungen, a Lithuanian town once proudfor the first telephoneline connecting it ton e i g h b o u r i n gR i e t t e v a .

"Yaacov Buhmke,the town's last re

maining Jew, escorted us to the forest where vastnumbers of Jewish children were murdered. Herewe reminisced about his old friends who wereliving in South Africa, in particular Chaim Klein, who as a 10-year old boy, had once walked fromPlungen to Rietteva, following the telephone lineto visit an uncle.

I suddenly pulled out my mobile phone, dialedKlein in Cape Town and handed the phone toBuhmke. The two friends chatted across thousands of miles and 70 years of Jewish history. Itwas then that I realized that we have Jewish telephone lines which connect Riga to Ra anana andwe mu.st maintain these connections."

Sidney Shapiro, Telfed Director, acknowledgedthe remarkable contribution of the Lithuanian spiritin shaping the South African community. "Thisspirit of togetherness and mutual help has contributed to the success of the South African Jewish community and has traveled with us to Israeland to Ra'anana. It is the spirit of Lithuania whichbrought the Shivtei Yisrael synagogue into be-ing."

As a fitting finale, the group shared Ra anana sgrief on Yom HaZikaron for Israel's fallen soldiers, and later the joy and excitement on the State's50th anniversary, spilling onto the streets withthousands of Ra'anana residents to celebrate therebirth of the Jewish people. •

Condolencesto Durban where they promoted the idea of applying a similar scheme to Israel. In 1953, they came toIsrael to discuss their ideas with Hadassah's Department of Social Medicine. They subsequentlyspent a year in Israel setting up a family and communal health centre in Katamon. In 1959, theFederation sponsored the scheme which brought the Karks and their professional team here. Thisinnovation brought untold advantages to a large public, as did a parallel scheme set up in Ashkelon inconjunction with the local hospital. The programme continues in a revised form to this day.

Our sincerest condolences are extended to Emily, her two sons and daughter and their families.
