Dear Saint Edward Parish Family:
Servanthood is the mark of true Chris7an living. Jesus emphasized this during the Last Supper, saying that he came not to be served, but to serve, and that likewise we should serve one another. In his parables, he o?en referred to believers as "servants" of the Kingdom. But in this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus says that he wants us to be his friends, not his slaves. Is he contradic7ng himself?
Not at all! Friends serve because they care. Slaves serve because of duty and the fear of punishment. Jesus said, "If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love." Do we hear this as a friend or as a slave?
Slaves are afraid of what will happen if they fail to keep God's commandments; they are self-protec7ve. Friends are eager to find out what God commands, because they view the commandments from the perspec7ve of love, as opportuni7es to serve; they are other-oriented.
Jesus said, "This is my commandment: Love one another the way I love you." It's the supreme commandment; call it the Commandment of Friendship. He says, "You know how I love you, my friends: I openly share with you everything that the Father tells me." His friends realize that what he shares (through scripture and through the Church) reveals our opportuni7es to love. Every commandment is rooted in love. Every Church teaching is based on scriptures that help us know when and how to love.
When we fail to obey, do we lose God's love? Never! Do we lose our place in his love? Yes. By living outside of his commandments, we feel unloved even while being loved.
This is slavery. We're enslaved by fear or by false beliefs or by our wounds that have caused us to think that we're not loved enough. God's commandments then feel confining, and if we try to escape, we commit rebellion. Those who don't rebel accept their slavery and obey du7fully in the hope of winning God's love.
Friends, on the other hand, know that God always loves them, and in this love, they are free to serve one another joyfully.
May God Bless & Keep You Always! F. Ri

LOVE ONE ANOTHER
In the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday of Easter we are met with an extraordi-nary challenge: Jesus commands us to “love one another as I love you” (John 15:12). The le:er from John echoes this command. Of course, we are to love those in our family, those we work with, those we like. But the scriptures make clear that we are also to love those we never no7ce, those we purposely avoid, and even those we are tempted to despise. In this Sunday’s selec7on from the Acts of the Apostles Peter shows us how far God’s love extends, and how far our love should extend in response. Peter realizes that God no longer “shows par7ality” to the Jews, sharing divine love exclusively with them. Christ has revealed that God’s love extends to all people, and so should ours.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Hello Dear Friends! Last Sunday, the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius hosted their annual Servant Leadership Award Program, honoring high school students who give back to their communi7es but most importantly to their parishes. Congratula7ons to Jillian Hale and Josh Reeder for receiving the award. Each teen received a towel to represent Jesus washing the feet of his disciples and giving us the call to serve others. It was inspiring to see over 50 young people receive this award. As part of the program, the sisters had each teen come up to the ambo and share who they saw as their mentor, the person who taught them to care for others and to share their faith with others. A few teens said their teachers. A few said their youth ministers. One said his football coach. Three teens said their priests. The majority, though, said their parents, grandparents, or siblings were their mentors in service and faith. It was really moving to hear these young people thanking their family members for loving them and teaching them how to love others. A?erwards, their mentors came up, received a pin, but also a hug. It was lovely. As I was sicng there watching the ceremony, I said a prayer for all of our parish families. Families ma:er. How we support our young people ma:ers. Parents, how you live your life really does influence your children. As CFF wraps up for this school year, lets con7nue to support our families as they mentor their children in faith and service. Parents, please know we have your back, support you as you raise your kiddos in the faith, and are praying for you! Peace and all goodness, Vicky Hathaway
