Salutations to our bliss giving, ever blissful Lord. Sairam to all the soulful Sai family members.

The land of the beautiful sun temple at Arasavalli which adorns the “Sun God “, a witness to our daily activities, the second of the Dashavataras, the Lord Sri Kurma, the only temple of the like, the all fulfilling mother Kota Durgamma and the ever flowing river Vamsadhara and Nagavalli which make the land green and fertile, give the Srikakulam District a special place. We can witness a cultural amalgamation of Orissa and Andhra in this district which is blessed by the Grace of our beloved Lord.

Bhagawan Baba chose hundreds of dedicated Sevadal and established His Divine Mission in this district through the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation four decades ago. By the grace of our beloved Bhagawan, the activities of our organisation are spreading throughout the district with increasing fervour each year. Especially after the year 2001 Swami’s name could reach every house and every inch of the district - All by the Grace of the Lord Himself.

HISTORY AND GLORY OF SRIKAKULAM DISTRICT

The District Srikakulam lies towards the east of Andhra Pradesh.” Subahs “were established during the reign of the Nawab of Golconda Mohd. Quliqutbshah. Chikakol was one amongst them. Chika was the lead seal. Kol means to remove. The taxes collected from the various” Subahs” were kept sealed in bags which were opened and counted here. So the name Chikakol came into vogue. Chikakol was called ‘ Fauzdar. Shermohd. Khan was the Fauzdar in 1562. He made two of his soldiers as Feudal Lords and allotted some villages to them. In due course of time they were called as the zamindars of Bobbili and Vijayanagaram. After attaining the great Independence, when the states were divided, Srikakulam was placed under Andhra. Thus Chikakol which is running as Shikakol was renamed as Srikakulam.

Far from pollution with moderate climatic conditions, Srikakulam is known as poor man’s Ooty. The district has beautiful natural surroundings with Telineelapuram inviting migratory birds on one side and Sun Temple, Sri Kurma Temple and the Srimukha Lingeswara Shiva Kshetra on the other. Nagavalli, Vamshadhara and Mahendratanaya rivers, Gotta Dam, Madduvalasa Dam one side with Kalingapatnam MadinaDurga, Veeraghattam Mary Matha Temple which glorifies unity in diversity on the other. Srikakulam is also beautified by the Mogadalapadu and Baruva beaches.

Sri Kodi Ram Murthy who won the title” Kaliyuga Bhima “, Indian Hercules, Jagadeka Malludu is from Veeraghattam of this district. He was the one who won these titles even before Karanam Malleswari of Amadalavalasa who won the Rajiv Khelratna Award and the Olympics medals. The well known volley ball coach Sri T. Rama Jogi Naidu is also from Unukuru of Srikakulam.Urlam which was called “Uramalla” known for Vedic Shastra Is also of this district. Sri Potnuru Swami Babu of Narasannapeta was the presiding officer for the secret meetings held in the forests of Kommusariyapalli in 1942 freedom movement. Smt Andhavarapu Venkata Ramanamma of this district collected a lot of ornaments for the Gandhi fund and lead the women wing of the freedom movement. Tribal revolutionary head Sri Thati Raju was be headed by the English in the municipal grounds of Srikakulam and to remind ourselves of the even, even today, in every village procession and celebration of the deities a character of Sri Thati Raju is enacted.

A well known literary figure Sri Adibhatla Narayana Dasu who earned the title ”HarikathaPitamaha” in 1964-65 and who could present Harikatha in 18 languages was also from Srikakulam. In the year 1930 when there was drought in this area his mother asked him to present the Hari katha of “ Markandeya” to please the Lord

because of which he could cause a downpour of heavy rains for a continuous four day period which removed the drought.

Once when someone casually said Hari katha is fine but what about Giri Katha, he immediately presented on stage the GirijaKalyanam for 3 hours without pausing. Such a Sangeeta SarvaBhauma was Sri Narayana Dasu . Sri Gidugu Ram Murthy known for simple prose is also from Srikakulam. Freedom fighters Sri Pullela ShyamaSundar Rao, Sri Garimella a singer and Sri Sardar Gautu Lachanna who started “RaituKuli” are also of this land. God has gracefully gifted all shining stars to Srikakulam.

MAP OF SRIKAKULAM DISTRICT

THE ENUNCIATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE SRI SATHYA SAI SEVA ORGANISATION IN SRIKAKULAM DISTRICT

On the 5th of December 2006, our most precious universal Lord uttered in His golden words in the Sai Kulwant Hall in PrashantiNilayam that Srikakulam District means the clan with” Sri “ like Sri Rama, Sri Krishna, Sri Rama Krishna Paramahamsa, this district also begins with “Sri”.

Bhagawan Baba’s name and form has first been spread in Srikakulam District in between the years 1965 and 1968 by Sri Manchiraju Suryanaranaya Murthy, an employee of the State Bank of India who rendered his services in Narasannapeta and Kotabommali branches of SBI.

Bhagawan’s teachings spread in the east and west Srikakulam District due to the constant dedicated efforts of many noble devotees. Sri Potnuru Swami Babu and his family in the east, Sri Baratam Bhagirathi, Kamala Nivas, Tammivari family in Srikakulam, Sri Jayaram in Pundi and Kotabommali, Sri Tankala Bhaskar Rao, Sri Goda Sharma , Sri Railway Narasimha Murthy , Sri Parlana Mangayya in Palasa, Ichapuram, Sompeta and the adjoining areas, Sri Potta Satyanarayana Gupta and family, Sri Sreepada Lakshmi Narayana Murthy, Sri Tanikella Bhanu Murthy , Sri Erramilli Suryam Pantulu , Sri Trimurthulu, Sri Bobbili SuriBabu etc. spread the message in the western district like Rajam, Palakonda, Ponduru etc.

The first Sevadal Training was given in GokhaleShishuSadan, Narasannapeta, nearly hundred Sevadal under the able guidance of the then district sevadal Convenor Sri Tankala Babjee who paved way to the rise in excellent services of the organisation.

It is our great fortune to have had amongst us late Sri Potnuru Swami Babu of Narasannapeta, an ardent devotee and freedom fighter, who was blessed by Swami with a letter written specially by Bhagawan himself. Sri D R Naidu in the early seventies, Sri Chelikani Ranganayakulu in the late seventees, Sri Y V Narasimha Murthy of Palakonda in the eighties who served dedicatedly as the district president in the organisation. Dr T. Sai Baba as the district Sevadal Convenor, Sri Tangudu Anand Rao, retired principal as a District Balvikas Convenor served with great devotion between the years 1982 and 86. Smt Mani, Smt Sathyabhama of Srikakulam, Smt Pavani of Narasannapeta, Smt Ramalakshmi of Hiramandalam were their contemporaries who worked with great fervour in building the Mahila Vibhag. Prof. N Kasturi gave his inspiring talks in Rajam and Narasannapeta in the year 1969 and sanctified this district. Around 500 devotees attended the meeting held at Sri Mallikarjunatheatre grounds in Rajam where sisters Annapurna and

Ramalakshmi sang bhajans and were blessed by Sri Kasturi Garu. Around 300 attended the meeting held at Gokhale Sishu Sadan, Narasannapeta. Fortunately 3 children of our district, Tammavari Ramana Murthy, Padmavathi and Sudha Rani were blessed to have sung a burrakatha on “Sai Charitham” in Poorna Chandra Auditorium in the immediate presence of our beloved Bhagawanon invitation from Prof Kasturi on 9-1-1978, Monday the Durgashtami Day. Swami appreciated and blessed them all. Smt Peddabottamma, Swami Karunyananda and Sri Tammiraju garu also visited and sanctified this district.

During the 90’s Sri V. Papa Rao served as the zonal Coordinator for 3 districts and extensively spread the teachings of Bhagawan. The seeds of service and spirituality shown by Sri Papa Rao blossomed into fragrant flowers and sweet fruits today and are responsible for the heights that we have achieved. Sri Thamma Narasimham was the then district incharge who spread the teachings in the district.

Sri R Lakshman Rao became the District president in 2001 in the new millennium and served the organisation for a decade. He introduced the title “Parthiyatra”. From the year 2001 onwards 10 Srikakulam Parthiyatrs were completed under his leadership and the title became nationwide and worldwide programme today to visit Prashanthinilaym. In every Parthi Yatra Bhagwan blessed all the devotees participated in the Parthi Yatra. Some of the highlights of Paprthi Yatras are as follows.

The 3rd parthi yatra is very memorable. From December,2003 to August,2003 Sri Sathya Sai Sahastra Grama seva yagnam performed in 1008 villages in Srikakulam district, 36 Free Veternary camps, 36 Drinking Water Wells dug in 36 villages, Amrutha Kalisams distributed to 2,400 families, 40 days Akhanda Bhajan performed. 8000 devotees visited on 21st August, 2003 to Prasanthinilayam. Swami permitted to perform to conduct Maha Nagar Sankeerthan in the immediate presence of Swami in Kulwanth Hall with various Spiritual and cultural activities and swami witnessed the devotional procession and blessed all the activities.

Bhagwan blessed the devotees with a Divine discourse on 23.08.2004 and showered his blessing with free Prasadam in Canteen.

The 4th Parthi Yatra is very blissful one. On 5.12.2005 Evening our merciful swami blessed all the devotees with a Group Interview in P.C. Hall and blessed with divine discourse for 40 minutes and lighted a special Lamp for Srikakulam district.

The 5th Parthi Yatra.. Teachers Parthi Yatra in 2006. 1400 Teachers Participated. Swami blessed everyone with Divine discourse and arranged Parasadam, giving

instructions to Sri B.V.Ramana Rao, for arranging Prasadam in Canteen and lighted a special Lamp for Srikakulam district.

6th to 10th Parthi Yatras, Swami witnessed all the cultural dramas and blessed all the devotees, children and youth who participated, with Darshan, Sparshan & Sambhashan.

Sri Gangula Ramana Babu took over in 2011 and is continuing to serve presently as the district president. Between 2001 and 2018 there were 17 Parti Yatras and more than one lakh devotees could visit Prashanti Nilayam and could fortunately have the Darshan of Bhagawan Baba. From 2013 PartiYatra onwards every year offer Maha Mangala Arati to the holy river Chitravathi with 1008 lamps and 108 camphor Aratis.

BHAGAWAN'S DIVINE MESSAGE

The Vedas are inspired by the holy spirit of Divine Mercy; they seek to transmit to humanity the secrets of a happy life here and of Liberation forever. They reveal the essence of the Divine Glory. This treasure of Vedas was slighted and neglected as a result of the fascination for outlandish ways of life, but, since some years, the feeling of reverence and the readiness to repent have appeared among the people. This Conference is itself a sign of revival. You are allowed the task of bringing once again to the homes of the people the message of Aathmic strength and Aathmic unity. The efforts you make

are directed to bring this goal into the awareness of each person.

Of course, there are in existence many organisations and societies engaged in distributing various cures for the 'spiritual' 'ills and therefore, a question may arise about the need for this additional institution. The need has arisen to emphasise the basic and essential discipline, which is practical and universal, as prescribed since ages for the revelation of the Divine in man. Bhaaratheeya Culture has to be fostered first. Every Indian has to learn and practise the spiritual science that the sages of this land have explored and discovered. This Conference and the organisations you represent are attempts to cure that illness. The purpose is the same, whatever the name Prashaanthi Vidwan Mahaasabha, Sathya Sai Seva Samithi, Sathya Sai Seva Dhal, or Sathya Sai Bhaktha Mandali. The first aim is to foster and cultivate Bhaaratheeya Culture. Let its validity be examined through actual living, and one's own discovery of its values and communicated to others by those who have experienced the peace and joy derivable from it.

Today, in the very land where this culture grew and flourished, immorality and corruption have destroyed happiness and contentment. Those who profess to lead the people are themselves led astray by the temptation to fall. So, the very first ideal you must keep in mind, when you start and run these organisations is: Do not crave for status or authority or position; do not allow any pomp, or show; do not compete for publicity or recognition or praise. Unity Consciousness is the heart‐beat of India. Duty is God. Do it and be content. You may have yearnings towards self‐aggrandizement and plans to fulfil them. But, you must subdue and destroy those desires.

Following My instructions without demur, is the best plan. While engaged in Service, it is wrong to yield to lower cravings or to follow one's own impetuosity. The Vedas declare that it is only by Thyaaga ‐ renunciation, surrender, and submission ‐ that immortality can be acquired. In the history of India, all the great movements and empires were motivated by spiritual undercurrents, not by political or economic stresses. It is only after the advent of the East India Company that politics and the struggle for political power predominated.

Sai Organisations must promote faith in God. For the influence available from positions of authority, for acquiring and accumulating power, people today is finding fault with others, trying to publicise the faults in others. This state of things is an insult cast in the face of our culture. It springs from the craving for cheap popularity and temporary fame. Your organisations must endeavour to promote faith in God. If that base is absent, worship, Bhajan, Pooja, good works ‐ all become meaningless automatic rituals, done under social compulsion. Inner transformation, which is the fruit, can be acquired only when these are done with faith. Faith can grow only from the root of inquiry. Faith is made firmer by inquiry. You must encourage inquiry by the members whom you contact and welcome their efforts to gain first‐hand experience.

Man strives to provide himself with food, clothing and housing for the sake of the body; he must also provide himself with some things to keep the mind healthy and happy. It is the mind that conditions even the body. Train the mind to dwell on the inner equipment rather than the outer attractions. Use the mind to cleanse the feelings, impulses, attitudes, tendencies and levels of consciousness. Let it not accumulate dirt from the outer world and deposit them within itself. If it is attached to work (Pravrittihimaarga) the consequences of work get attached to it. Unattached work is the purest; it does not encumber the mind with elation or disappointment. 'I did it,' 'This is mine': these are the two fangs that make the individual poisonous. Pull out the fangs, the snake can be handled and played with as a pet.

These organisations must be vigilant to see that egoism and the sense of personal possession, pride or achievement, do not invade them. That is the goal to be kept in view. When an organisation is started it has to lay down for itself certain rules and regulations. But our rules are of a different nature altogether. Our rules emphasise that members must first practise what they stand for. Whatever you desire others to do, you must first put into daily practice sincerely and with steadfastness. You must do Bhajan regularly and systematically, before you advise others about the

efficacy of Bhajans. When you want to be honoured by others, you must learn to honour them first.

Service has become a word of common currency, but its value is very much reduced by the hypocrisy of the users. Really speaking, only those who are afflicted with agony, equal agony, at the sight of pain and suffering, distress or disease, have the right to offer service; for, they are not serving others, they are serving themselves, serving to remove as fast and as intelligently as they can, their own agony. Service to others is the medicine one needs to alleviate the distress which fills one at the sight of distress in another being. Feel that you are serving yourself, that you are curbing your own ego. Otherwise service heightens your self‐esteem and develops a sense of superiority, which are both harmful spiritually. Food is the medicine for the illness of hunger; drink, for the illness of thirst; for the disease of bhavarogha (Birth‐Death‐Cycle), Bhagawan is the medicine; for the disease of desire, Jnaana is the specific. For the disease of doubt, despair and hesitation, which are the occupational diseases of Saadhakas, the most effective remedy is paropakaara (doing good to others). For the major infection of ashaanthi (anxiety), the course of treatment is Bhajan. It is to provide these remedies to the sufferers that the organisation has to dedicate itself. – Divine discourse (extracts), First All‐India Conference of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, Madras, 21‐4‐1967

“Silence has to be started with oneself; that is to say, one must talk less, and think more deliberately, more discriminatingly. One must try to empty the mind of impulses and prejudices and preferences. Thus, man must strive to reach down to his real nature or dharma, which is Divine, Dharmaswaruupa (righteousness personified)”.
