The ministers and other leading citizens decided Arjunashould be crowned as the king in spite of his defect.

The royal couple was sad but the king performed all rituals for the child. He named his son Arjuna, but because he was the son of Kaartaveerya, people began to call him Kaartaveerya.

Besides his bent arms the prince had no other defect. He was brilliant at school and his teachers praised him. He was intelligent, skillful and righteous. But the king was unhappy thinking that the heroes would laugh at him and ridicule him because of his weak and crooked hands.

Finally the king died of fear and worry.

Arjuna was still young, only seventeen but had a very good sense of duty. He told the ministers, “I am grateful for your support but I do not want the kingdom. If I accept the position out of love of power and cannot discharge my duties I will not escape punishment.”

Carrying out the duties of a government requires the king;to possess great powers acquired by penance, to be an expert in weaponry and possess skills in governing.

I will go to hell if I should accept the kingdom and do not have the ability to perform these duties.

“Why do people give a share of their profits or pay taxes to the king? Is it not because he can protect them from all kinds of afflictions and protect them against enemies?”

“If I cannot protect them and take a share of their profits as tax, what difference will there be between me and a robber or cheat?”

“You may say I can command the army to protect the people but will not the soldiers laugh to themselves that I send them to battle and I cannot fight myself?”

Arjuna declared, “I will perform tapas (penance) and when I have acquired sufficient power, I shall accept the responsibility of ruling the Empire. Do not compel me now.”

“Child will not Supreme Lord who did so much for Indra, not do this little favour for you?

There is one difficulty, Datta is a severe tester of his devotees.

Therefore be careful. If you can stand the severity of his tests, your request is simple for him. There is no doubt about it.”

SEA (continued)

MAIDEN :O King, there lived a village maiden whose father was searching for a groom.

One day a marriage party came to see her. Her mother was not in the village at the time so she had to pound the rice, cook and serve it.

It would not be proper for her to be caught doing this task so she tried to pound the rice in secrecy. But the bangles on her wrist began to jingle. The more bangles she wore the more jingling. So she kept two bangles on each wrist. Even then there was a little jingling from the bangles. She began pounding with only one bangle on each wrist.

The ministers were pleased on hearing Arjuna’s decision.

Arjuna asked, “Sir how can you say this with certainty?”

Muni Garga laughed and narrated the story of Indra and how Datta helped him to destroy Jambhaasura.

I observed this attentively. I learnt from this maiden that if too many persons gather in one place, quarrels begin. When two persons are together, talking starts. Therefore a yogi should remain in solitude.

Muni Garga, one of the ministers suggested to Arjuna, “Lord Dattatreya is residing in the Sahyadrimountains,. He looks on everyone equally. Go and serve him. He alone can satisfy your desires.”

In the same way, a yogi should not show off his powers or express his feelings..

He should not allow others to know his beginning or end, or be overjoyed when his desires are fulfilled or depressed when he does not get what he wants.

I learnt from the Sea to practice equanimity and be steadfast in my devotion to the Self..

King Yadu asked Lord Datta, “How do you remain unaffected, happy and calm? Why do you

always seems to be floating in bliss? What has made this state of mind possible?”

Lord Datta replied, “O King Yadu I have observed the world closely and obtained a little knowledge from a

number of gurus (teachers). I have 24 such gurus.

Listen carefully! I will tell you what I have learnt from them.”

The Sea :I learnt two or three things from the Sea.

Even though the sea is large it does not allow even a small leaf to remain on its surface. It drives it away to the shore. If it did not do this it would have dried up by now.

Therefore I learnt from the Sea even the least disturbance should not be allowed a foothold.

A person should not allow even the smallest desire or agitation to enter his mind. If he is careless, he can be ruined by it.

The Sea is very deep even though it does not appear so. It does not reveal the number of creatures or gems that are hidden in it.

Many rivers flow into the Sea yet it does not dry up in summer when the river waters decrease nor does it overflow in the rainy season.

Arjuna then left for Sahyadri. He reached Dattatreya’s ashramaand taking refuge at Datta’s feet, served him with great devotion.

The service rendered by Kaartaveerya Arjuna excelled that of even Indra. He worshipped the feet of Datta every moment.

He supplied wine, he fetched fruits and offered them to Him, he applied sandal paste and decorated Him with garlands of flowers.

He never took his eyes off the Lord. He did not question him and never let any doubt enter any corner of his mind.

He served food to the Lord and ate his left-overs with devotion. When the Lord rebuked him or beat him, he bore it humbly and patiently.

Kaataveerya Arjuna was thus serving the Lord with a single pointed mind when one day Datta became angry and scolded him for no reason. Both his twisted hands were scorched.

I have a little power but I have fallen in bad ways under the influence of wine and bad company so my powers have slipped away. How can I help you?

You have wasted your time. At least now leave this drunkard and choose a worthy man.”

Lord Datta was pained on seeing his condition and took pity on him saying mildly, “O Prince you wanted something good but something bad is confronting you.

Story continued……..

Lord Dattatreya was pleased with Kaartaveerya’sdetermination. He showed his true form and said lovingly, “Arjuna, ask any boon you want.”

Kaartaveerya burst into tears hearing the Lord’s words. Then he remembered Muni Garga words.

Do you remember what Muni Garga had said to Arujna?

Kaartaveerya said to the Lord, “Gurudeva, you are the Lord of illusion. You are not a mere human being. The devi with you is Ramaa devi. Even Lord Brahma, Indra and others were deluded by your illusion.

“My Lord, even if I loose my two arms and legs I cannot let go of your feet. I shall not give up serving you.”

Then what about me, who am crooked minded? If you yourself do not help us, O Father, who can be our refuge?

This day on which you obtained so many extraordinary boons will be a memorable day not only for you but the whole world.

This virtuous devi is Anagha Devi, our sons are the eight supernatural powers.

As you have worshipped Me and Anaghadevi and obtained the eight supernatural powers, this day will be known as Anagha Ashtami.

This day will be very dear to me.

Those who perform the Anagha Ashtami vrata (prayer) on this day will not suffer deficiencies in this world.

I give Myself away to those who, as long as they live, perform the vrata every year.

I shall make them like you, Arjuna.

I shall grant liberation to seven generations before and after them.

It is owing to you that this benefit has been granted to the world.”

Smiling graciously, Lord Dattatreya said, “Kaartaveerya Arjuna, I grant you all the boons you have requested. In addition you will become a powerful emperor. I shall give you a celestial chariot.

May auspiciousness come to you.”

Kaartaveerya was filled with joy. “I will grant you one more boon.”
