STUDENT COUNCIL OF SMMCA

In alignment with the mission of the college to empower women, the Students Council of SMMCA

endeavors to instill and nurture leadership and management qualities in the students. The Student

Council of SMMCA has had its presence since 1995, with the structuring of Students Council

undergoing radical transformation in its structuring since 2015 – 16. The executive body of Students

Council of SMMCA is constituted jointly by elected members (from the pool of Class

Representatives) and members nominated by the previous executive body (from students active in

academics and organization of activities). The Students Council is the bridge between the students

and faculty. At the grassroot level of college lies a robust system of Class Representatives and

Faculty Class Co-Ordinator’s. Each batch of 120 students is divided in 3 sections of 40 students each.

The Faculty Class Co-Ordinator’s are mentors to their class section of 40 students and the Class

Representatives convey student feedback and grievances directly to their mentors as well as Student

Council on monthly basis. Every semester, the Students Council meets with the Dean of Students,

Principal of SMMCA and Class In-charge teacher for a feedback session.

The Student Council body of SMMCA since 2015-16 has expanded to include various committees to

ensure best organization of various types of events. The Student Council typically has 12 members

under the following positions – President, Vice-President, Treasurer/s, Design Heads, Activity Heads,

Editorial Heads and Cultural Heads. This results in a more democratic and decentralized manner of

functioning of the Students Council. Since 2018-19 the Student Council has started to identify the

upcoming Student Council team of 12 members and groom them as trainees to take over the

Student Council in their designated term. This is a very effective arrangement wherein there is

strong vertical integration between the mentor and mentee teams, and results in a more efficient

Student Council team. The Students Council independently organizes the annual events – Dahi Handi

& Teachers Day (usually in September), Archiventure (The Cultural Fest of SMMCA which is usually in

third week of December) and Farewell program (usually in March or April). The Students Council also

actively contributes in the conduction of several other annual activities like Winter Drawing

Competition, Alumni Meet & International Women’s Day Program. The Editorial Team of Students

Council publishes its own magazine annually called as ‘Her Space’ which is a beautiful compilation of

thoughts and artistic endeavors of SMMCA students and teachers.

Students Council has always played a role in the initiation of extra-curricular clubs like Music Club,

Movie Club, Sketching Club, Photography Club, etc. These clubs have teachers as mentors and under

these clubs students learn from their teachers in an informal environment.

The Students Council of SMMCA has grown from strength to strength since its inception. SMMCA

Student Council today boasts of having started the very first Student Chapter of IGBC in 2017 and

also has Rotaract Chapter started in 2018.

Rotaract Report

SMMCA collaborated with Rotary Club of Nagpur on 12th February 2019.

The first installation took place within the college where a committee was elected amongst

the B.Arch III year students

The installation gave name to a committee of 12 members and a teacher-in-charge(TIC) of

the college that would be responsible for providing the information for the college students

with the initiatives taken up by the rotaract members.

The main objective has been to-

sensitize students towards various social issues and inculcate the virtue of social

responsibility

expose to students to take part in service projects

increase student and faculty interaction with a non-political, non- religious, charitable

organization

SMMCA has participated in the following events with Rotary Club of Nagpur-

A day with the SPECIALLY ABLED

The students of SMMCA were given an opportunity to spend a day with the specially abled

on 14th February

The students were divided into groups and were indulged into games.

The TIC, Namrata Gaurkhede attended Udaan, a cultural event organized by the club on the

occasion of Valentine’s Day for 1000 specially-abled children from nearby Zila Parishad

schools.

WALKATHON

The walkathon was the first initiative SMMCA was a part of.

The students and committee members took part actively and helped in the success of the

event along with the other colleges.

The committee ensured maximum number of the participation of students and teachers

from the college itself leaving aside the citizens.

The student board, headed by

Nidhi Joseph, volunteered for

another event ‘Walkathon’

organized on 24th Jan 2019 which

included registrations before the event and conducting the actual event. Around 80 girls

from our college participated in the event. The registration fees collected for the event will

go to the families of the martyrs of the Pulwama attack.

Tree Plantation

Rotary club donated 150 plants of native species to make SMMCA campus greener. The

plantation drive at the campus was carried out to avail benefits of the rainy season. The idea

was to make one student in-charge of nurturing one plant, thus maximum participation from

first and second year and the entire faculty was seen.

IGBC Student Chapter

The student chapter of IGBC was launched on 10th March 2016. India is witnessing tremendous

growth in infrastructure and construction development. As development gains momentum, the need

for greenery and lung space is also gaining importance. As the sector is growing rapidly, preserving

the environment poses a host of challenges. To enable the construction industry environmentally

sensitive, CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre has established the Indian Green Building

Council (IGBC). IGBC is a consensus driven not-for-profit Council representing the building industry.

The Council encourages, builders, developers, owners, architects and consultants to design &

construct green buildings thereby enhancing the economic and environmental performance of

buildings. The Green Building Movement in India has been spearheaded by IGBC (part of CII) since

2001, by creating National awareness. The Council’s activities have enabled a market transformation

with regard to green building concepts, materials and technologies. IGBC continuously works to

provide tools that facilitate the adoption of green building practices in India. The development of

IGBC Green Landscape Rating System is another important step in this direction

The program was Inaugurated by Honorable, Ar. Ashok Mokha, Chairman, CII IGBC Vidarbha

chapter.Guest of Honor were Ar. Shreyashi Ansingkar, Architect CII IGBC and Mr. Abhay Singh,

Executive officer and head, CII Vidarbha zonal council & Ar. Parikshit Choudhary, Convener(SC), CII

IGBC,Vidarbha chapter. Current four-member Student Body of SMMCA student chapter is as follows

India to be one of the global leaders in sustainable built environment by 2025

IGBC is a registered organization. The ‘IGBC – Vidarbha Student Chapter’ is a component of

the IGBC. – Vidarbha Chapter

The IGBC – Vidarbha Student Chapter was born with a need for a local educational institute

that can provide a platform for students in understanding green sustainable practices from a

grass root level, to network and share amongst the proponents of the Green Building

Movement

The birth of IGBC – Vidarbha Student Chapter - under the able guidance of the Chairman

Honorable, Ar. Ashok Mokha, and Co Chair in 2017

Currently two Conveners namely Ar. Parikshit Choudhury & Ar Rashmi Tijare have been

nominated to look after the subcommittee of IGBC – Vidarbha Student Chapter.
