3:30pm

What is the Role of the Performance Measurement Professional in the Digital Age? As with many aspects of securities operations, the definition of a performance measurement professional is changing. This interactive workshop would challenge participants to re-evaluate the qualifications of a performance measurement professional. This is an opportunity to share stories, seek clarification and gain insight via interactive efforts during the session. It will also offer a peek into what the future may hold for career development.Some of the areas of exploration are: • When looking to hire performance measurement staff, what qualifications and areas of experience should firms

look for in candidates? • What are the challenges ahead for young professionals striving to build career paths? • Given the reach and respect that performance measurement groups have attained, what are all of the

opportunities available within this discipline?

A Practical Guide on How to Migrate a Performance Measurement IT System

There is growing pressure on firms to align their performance measurement systems with changing market requirements. But some performance measurement groups and individuals need to come up to speed on how to optimize their efforts.

This workshop will cover some of the basics in planning, tracking, day-to-day management and evaluation of such projects. There will be opportunities to break into groups that will tackle many complex subjects such as creating requirements, brainstorming, developing templates, reviewing lessons learned and getting insight into how these projects reach fruition. This intense immersion into the intricacies of systems migration may prove valuable if the situation presents itself.

Day 2 – Breakfast and Check in at 8:15am

9:00am Chairperson’s Welcome and Opening Remarks

9:15am Quantifying Portfolio ManagementWhether or not a portfolio performs well, performance measurement staff should ask reasonable questions about the portfolio manager’s capabilities. While the reasons for a portfolio manager’s (or a team’s) success may be difficult to pinpoint, it’s worth the effort to attribute, quantify and analyze a manager’s skill and/or luck, given the situation. In the end, securities firms will have to decide who gets the credit or the blame — either the portfolio managers with proven talent or the fleeting market conditions and major events beyond any human control?Some of the key questions that the panel will ask are: • What are the best methods for uncovering the reasons for a fund’s (or portfolio’s) success or failure?• What impacts data and accounting problems can have on a portfolio’s progress? • When is the right time for performance measurement teams to step forward and debunk all myths

about a fund and just present the facts?• How should performance measurement teams react to internal political pressures caused by their

revelation? • And what is the best way forward to profitability once all the facts are known? Moderator: James Tarpey, Director, Performance and Investment Risk, Franklin Templeton Investments

11:15am Artificial Intelligence Meets Performance Measurement

Could artificial intelligence (AI) technologies be a good match for performance measurement operations? This panel will explore how realistic it is for AI to become part of a performance measurement activity. Is this a marriage made in Heaven or Hell?This panel will explore:• The current state of AI offerings and how they

could be applied to performance measurement activities;

• The financial services firms that have begun to use AI-based systems;

• And a look ahead to how AI could help improve key aspects of securities operations.

Coping with the SEC’s New Swing Pricing RulesBy November 2018, the SEC will be implementing new rules governing “swing pricing,” which the regulator says is the “process of adjusting the fund’s net asset value (NAV) per share to effectively pass on the costs stemming from shareholder purchase or redemption activity to the shareholders associated with that activity.” This panel will review how the SEC rules for swing pricing might:• Spur new NAV policies and procedures for a firm’s

funds;• Impact a fund’s board-level governance and related

issues;• Encounter significant logistical challenges that may

complicate adoption at many firms; • And lead to changes in a firm’s reporting procedures.

12:05pm Time for Full AutomationInvestment managers have embraced automation for many aspects of performance measurement, but the reach of IT can frequently fall short when it comes to marketing efforts and client reporting. Thus many financial services firms rely on partially automated or completely manual processes for the very important outreach to current and prospective clients. This can be frustrating for performance measurement staff and the firm as they strive to regularly update clients and support the firm’s marketing efforts. This panel discussion will explore:• What is the role of performance measurement managers in

helping the firm update its IT management infrastructure? • What are some of the basic building blocks in creating a more

complete, effective and timely reporting process? • What is the best way to reach out to clients, marketing staff

and oversight boards to make certain that they get the data and analytics they need?

An Update of the GIPS 20/20 EffortThe industry has had a strong response to the GIPS 20/20 project, launched by the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS) group of the CFA Institute. The effort solicited feedback on where GIPS standards are heading and their impacts upon investors. The goal of the ambitious effort was to advance and streamline the GIPS standards.This panel will:• Review the current status of the effort;• Delve into the major concerns of the industry respondents;• Identify the groups such as investors, investment managers,

and others that will benefit from the revamped GIPS standards

• And how changes to the GIPS standards will impact prospective clients, pooled fund investors and oversight boards.

Riding Out Vendor ConsolidationThe performance measurement industry is adjusting to many shocks to the system such as the spate of mergers and acquisitions among top vendors and service providers. For the customers and business partners impacted by M&As, they can often spur multiple debates about current and new performance measurement philosophies and strategies. Vendor consolidation can also impact staffing issues, outsourcing arrangements and related third-party relationships. The panel will explore:• The best ways to respond to the fewer IT system

choices caused by vendor consolidation;• How to pick the best way forward for a firm’s

operations and staff;• How much executive input will be needed to ease

the transition;• And what can firms ask of their providers as they are

going through major changes. Panelists: Dean McIntyre, Director of Performance

Strategy, FactSetStephen DeTommasso, Managing Director, Investment

Get Ready for the EU’s Benchmarks RegulationWhile other regulatory efforts have gotten the headlines, the European Union has quietly put forth its Benchmarks Regulation initiative, which is holding benchmark administrators to new standards of accuracy and integrity. The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has been overseeing the effort and will guide its inauguration on January 1, 2018.The panel will explore:• How ESMA will supervise benchmark reporting

(comment: it’s not just administrators but users and contributors) via national competent authorities;

• How global firms will need to adopt to new regime;• How to juggle this regulatory demand while

meeting MiFID II requirements;• And what recourse there is for firms that may have

been using benchmarks judged less than optimal by ESMA.

3:40pm Performance Measurement VariablesThe profession of performance measurement encounters many variables that can skew results and reporting in a variety of directions. This panel discussion will tackle some of the major factors that can have a great impact upon performance measurement operations.Some of the major variables to consider are: BENCHMARKS BEYOND THE BASICS: • How useful are the benchmarks that go beyond the basics?• Do offbeat benchmarks tell the truth about performance

better than standard operating benchmarks?SCRUTINIZING TRANSFORMATION STRATEGIES AND OPERATING MODELS:• Some investment management firms are transforming their

businesses given market conditions, and this is likely to mean that performance measurement groups will have to review of their operating models.

• What should performance measurement teams keep in mind as they consider new operating models?

• How much executive guidance will performance measurement teams need as they review their new operating models?

ARE YOU BEING WELL SERVED? • How can you tell if your firm is being well served by your

provider? • What are the signs that you may not be getting the best

portfolio performance measurement and attribution services?

• What are some of the best practice that will help your firm stay on track with its performance measurement strategy?Moderator: Shirley Lam, VP, Global head of Attribution and

What is the Next Chapter for Offshoring & Outsourcing

Once touted as a panacea for performance measurement operations, the practices of offshoring and outsourcing have become more of a burden for firms than the problem they were supposed to resolve. There has been a backlash against outsourcing and firms are beginning to pull back from less than optimal arrangements. Other firms are true believers.This panel will explore: • The strengths and weaknesses of

offshoring/outsourcing; • What are the top lessons learned from using

far-flung third parties; • What strategies have made

offshoring/outsourcing work;Panelists: Ambika D’Souza, PMP, CIPM VP,

4:30pm Can Performance Measurement Tell a Story?In one key aspect, those working in performance measurement are being asked to do more than pure, independent and objective reporting. Their colleagues in marketing and other departments want analytics to help them tell a story about the performance of the firm’s management capabilities or even assist with a proof of concept (poc) effort. This panel will focus on:• How far can a performance measurement group go in its support of marketing efforts?• What are the best ways the performance measurement team can help with the narrative of the

firm’s success?• Are regulatory limits and governance practices always effective in preventing the misuse of

performance measurement data? Panelists: John Matsikas, CFA, CIPM, SVP, Investment Performance, Voya Investment Management
