A devastating fire that broke out just after dawn on Sunday completely destroyed the well-known double-storeyed timber house in Nederland Park’s Lion Cachet Street.

No loss of life or injuries were reported but occupants, a father, son and grandson, were left with only the clothes on their backs as the structure was reduced to ashes.

Onlookers stared in disbelief as fire-fighters from Msukaligwa Fire and Rescue Services battled bravely to contain the blaze which spread rapidly through the once stately home.

The exact cause of the fire was not known by the time of going to print.

News of the fire was carried on the Highvelder's social media network and

within minutes messages of shock and support came flooding in from far and wide.

Former owners and many people who had visited in the house shared their memories and experiences they had enjoyed in the house that was built in 1985.

A former owner, Doreen Staarup who now lives in Rustenburg, wrote: “Today my heart is unbelievably sad for the people who lost everything in this beautiful home, a home we owned and lived in for much of our children's young lives. This was a home with many stories, it was warm, cosy, and we loved coming home from

a holiday to the smell of the wood after it had been closed up. We have many, many wonderful memories here as well as memories of hard times in Ermelo, but it was always great to come back to my 'home. It's so sad to see it destroyed!

We are thinking of the people that have lost everything and trust that God will comfort them. I know it's only material things, but it's your entire livelihood, photos, family memories,

etc. that are lost. Simply devastating.We were the second owners and bought the home from the man who built it. I remember hearing voices outside one day and walking to the upstairs window,

which was my children's bedroom, and seeing about 15 foreigners who had stopped outside our home in a mini-bus, all standing taking photos with our house as the backdrop. The guide was speaking about the fact that it was the only timber home in Ermelo. I found it rather lovely and amusing and felt very blessed to have this as my home."

Other former owners, Johan and Adri du Plessis who now live in Bethlehem in the Free State, were also saddened by the news that the quaint home was no more.

“We lived in that house for 13 years and sold it to the present owners 18 months ago. There are so many memories of that house. It had a warm and homely aura about it and we were really happy living there. There was so much love in that house," said Johan.

The Carolina Regional Court recently sentenced Victor Nqobile Mtsweni (34) to 15 years' imprisonment for each of two counts of business and two of armed robbery in Carolina.

Carolina station commander, Capt M.F. Twala, applauded the investigating officer, Det-W/O Thulani Madoda Sibeko.

The sentences will run concurrently.

A suspect who was re-arrested on Monday night after escaping from the Ermelo police cells over the weekend was found hanged in his cell early on Tuesday morning.

Police spokesman for Ermelo, Capt Carla Prinsloo, said the deceased, Siyabonga Welcome Zwane (21), who was originally being held on suspicion of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and a 21-year-old

housebreaking suspect who at this stage cannot be named, escaped through the roof of their police cell over the weekend.

Zwane was re-arrested at about 20:30 on Monday night and again held in custody. At about 00:45 on Tuesday it was found he had hanged himself with a blanket in his cell.

The other escapee was still at large by the time of going to print.

Two suspects, aged 31 and 23 years old respectively, were taken into custody by Davel Police last Thursday morning on charges of dealing in dagga after they were found in possession of 13,7 kg of the weed.

Police spokesman for Davel, Const Portia Nkosi, said

Costs MP Dlamini and BE Mavuso stopped a Nissan Quantum during a routine stop-and-search operation on the N17 and found several "arms" of dagga hidden in the vehicle.

The suspects appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Dagga with a total weight of 13,7kg was found in the vehicle.

MEC warns officersMpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Mr Vusi Shongwe has sent a warning to junior station commanders to refrain from criminal activities as they would end up with criminal records.

In a press statement, Mr Shongwe sent the message to more than 85 junior station commanders placed in police stations across the province, saying the message must also be passed on to the youth that a criminal record has far-reaching implications in one's life.

"You officers and the public must be warned that the police would never recruit someone with

a criminal record and the same goes for other employment opportunities," said Mr Shongwe.

The MEC has also called on the provincial commissioner to put in full swing the "Bring Back Umkhono Wekati" ("surrender your firearm") campaign. He said with the campaign his department aims to collect all illegal guns from people who are not fit and or not allowed to carry or operate firearms.

Mr Shongwe also said his department would hold a Peace and Stability Indaba to discuss issues threatening the livelihood of the people in the province.

’n Polisiewa het verlede week op ’n plaas naby Morgenzon uitgebrand. Volgens ’n woordvoerder op Morgenzon, het die polisie gereageer op ’n oproep dat daar ’n lyk in ’n spruit dryf. Die polisiebeampte moes deur ’n stuk veld op mnr. Jannie Rhoode se plaas ry toe sy voetuig aan die brand geslaan het. Boere in die omgewing het almal gehelp om die veldbrand te keer, maar die polisievoertuig het in die slag gebly. Niemand is in die voorval beseer nie. Dit is nog nie seker wat die voertuig aan die brand laat slaan het nie. Mnr. Rhoode bedank al die boere wat hom bygestaan het om die brand onder beheer te kry.

Six family members die in fireSix family members, including minor children, died tragically in a fire that swept through their home in Mandela Drive in Ermelo shortly after midnight on Friday morning.

Members of Msukaligwa Fire and Rescue Services were called to the scene and managed to control the blaze which had swept through the small home.

An official report on the exact cause of the fire has not yet been released, but at this stage it is believed the fire could have been caused when a blanket fell onto a heater.

The deceased are Mandla Msibi (54), Lindiwe Msibi (20), her two children, Sisanda Sibeko (4) and Boy Sibeko (2), Nkosingphile Mkhonto (15) and Sethu Msibi (13).

A delegation under the leadership of Msukaligwa Executive Mayor Mr Sipho Bongwe visited the scene on Friday and, together with other role players, will look into the possibility of establishing a coordinated project to assist the remaining family members with the necessary logistical support.

Burial arrangements could not be established by the time of going to print.

Die egpaar het in Malawi asook die Transvaalse Laeveld sendingwerk gedoen, waarna hulle na Johannesburg verhuis het.

Albei het by die destydse SAUK in diens getree.

Giel het ’n administratiewe pos beklee,

terwyl sy persoonlike assistent van die SAUK se hoof was.

In 1998 het die egpaar hulle op Ermelo gevestig in ’n woonstel by die SAVF-Huis.

Ná haar eggenoot se heengaan in Januarie 2012, het Ciennie op Amersfoort en Standerton gewoon voordat sy 18 maande gelede Nelspruit toe verhuis het.

Sy word deur vier kinders, twee getroude seuns, Ockert en Nelius, twee getroude dogters, Alna Basson en Estelle Herbst, asook vyf klein- en vier agterkleinkinders oorleef. (CK)

Mpumalanga MEC for Health Mr Gillion Mashego recently opened the newly built orthotic and prosthetic workshop and the warehouse stores in the Ermelo Regional Hospital.

The workshop is equipped with machinery that will assist the hospital in addressing the current orthopedic backlog.

Mr Mashego said the machinery includes a state-of-art 4d computer currently found only at Tshwane University of Technology and in Ermelo Hospital, which helps with designing new artificial limbs in less than half the time compared to older equipment.

“I am currently in talks with orthopedic specialists in Witbank and Nelspruit to draft a plan to attract more specialists to the province. We are also working with the University of Pretoria to assist us in getting more doctors to come to this province,” said Mr Mashego.

He attributed part of the challenges to the red tape and prolonged paperwork in hiring doctors.

“Our processes take long in hiring doctors and by the time we’re done, the candidate has already been snatched up elsewhere,” he said.

The MEC also said the province had received Cuban doctors and they were now moving towards 10 orthopedics surgeons who would be spread across the province to assist with the backlog.

requested to add more professional nurses and beds, something already on his priority list

He also mentioned that his department was working towards re-categorising Ermelo Hospital from an urban to a rural area facility.

“The present categorisation makes it difficult for the department to retain some of the staff, because we’re unable to match allowances paid in urban facilities,”said Mr Mashego.

The MEC went on to officially open the newly built R29 million hospital warehouse stores. The building houses a laundry and linen facility equipped with the necessary machinery.

The warehose also has a poison room, a filing room and massive cold room, among others. The storeroom is large enough for everything the hospital needs, from food to stationery.

Mr Mashego said they would also be providing training to deal with the problem of staff attitude.

Ermelo Regional Hospital CEO Ms Cathrine Mbuyane pledged that they would provide good leadership and encouraged the staff to give only their best. Executive Mayor of Msukaligwa Municipality Mr Sipho Bongwe said they would support the hospital as much as they could. He appealed to communities to elect people to the hospital board who would motivate and encourage nurses and communities.

“Let us protect these facilities so that we leave a good heritage for our children,” said Mr Bongwe.

Mabel was van 1975 tot 1997 met haar aftrede proefleser by die Hoëvelder.

Sy was ’n statige vrou en daar is dikwels na haar verwys as die bes-geklede vrou in Ermelo.

Mabel het twee jaar gelede weens haar gesondheid na Rustenburg verhuis.

Sy laat haar twee kinders, sewe klein-kinders en ses agter-kleinkinders agter.

Haar lewe word so deur ’n goeie vriendin opgesom:

“Mabel sal altyd onthou word vir waardigheid en vriendelikheid en haar familie was altyd haar grootste liefde. Met deernis het sy ook ’n groot bydrae gelewer tot haar groot vriendekring.

“Sy was baie bekend in Ermelo en was ’n wel-berese en wel-belese vrou.

“Mabel het ’n diep gevoel gehad vir die estetiese dinge van die lewe soos gesien kon word aan haar goeie smaak vir musiek, teater, kuns en die natuur.

“Sy het altyd haar familie en vriende met liefde en empatie bygestaan.

“Mabel het ’n skerp sin vir humor gehad en het altyd ’n vrolikheid tot alle

Kapt. Prinsloo het ná haar matriekjaar by die polisiediens aangesluit en afgesien van ’n tydperk van drie jaar wat sy vroeër voltyds aan haar studies gewy het, het sy reeds 23 jaar diens in die polisie.

Sy het in 1994 diens as polisiewoord-voerder op Ermelo aanvaar.

Sifiso helps youngsters beat drugsA recovered drug addict Sifiso Sibeko (33) has devoted his time and energy and opened his house to those struggling to beat the drug and alcohol habits that have taken over their lives.

Sifiso says he has been clean for three years and has been helping others for more than two years.

“My wife and I have helped more than 50 addicts in the province.”

He recounted his struggle with drugs and alcohol, but said it all started at the tender age of six, when he became addicted to stealing.

“I stole money because it gave me a good feeling and made me feel important. My friends and bullies at school treated me differently when I had money. With money in my hands and pockets, everyone respected me,” said Sifiso.

Sifiso’s first encounter with illegal drugs was during his tertiary education where he was introduced to Ecstasy.

He later escalated the habit to cocaine when his wealthy friend and classmate suggested it over drinks at his house.

“The problem is I wanted to try everything. I fell for everything that came my way as I didn’t have direction and guidance, I just didn’t stand up for anything in my life and that is why all hell broke loose,” explained Sifiso.

He said things got worse when he began working and was involved in the entertainment business, where he could

afford the lavish life style he had always dreamed of.

Seeing celebrities and other stars who were his friends made him think “doing drugs and alcohol” was a cool habit.

Without a vision in life, Sifiso thought life was all about partying.

“True to its nature, cocaine went with other addictions.

"I was also addicted to sex and found myself with multiple sexual partners and in many instances had unprotected sex. My work began to suffer as I could not cope anymore.

"I splashed all my money on drugs. R20 000 would be gone in three days through drugs and alcohol,” explained S’fiso.

He said the habit became expensive to keep and started

selling all his belongings, including a car he had bought in his mother's name.

He later explained his problem to his employer and he went to rehab for a month, only to learn about new drugs.

“In rehab I listened to what others were doing and how they were doing it and decided I had to try that when I got out.

"The first day after rehab my friends took me out to celebrate my homecoming.

"They bought me alcohol and the circle began all over again. I’ve been to five rehabilitation centres in total.”

He said his turning point came when

he realised he was dying a slow death. He was high every day, always in denial and could not go a week without drugs and alcohol.

He resigned from work and told himself he needed to claim his life back or lose the little he had left of it.

“My wife, Tidimalo Sibeko, a God-fearing woman, was my salvation. I met her at work and it was hard for her to deal with me when I relapsed.

"She was the only person who stood by me when the whole world had turned against me.”

He says they are giving addicts love, shelter, warmth and a sense of belonging. They mainly use the Word of God to help others and they have opened their home to such brothers and sisters.

He says they normally take in a maximum of five people because of space, offer them life skills and spiritual guidance, and teach them woodwork and gardening.

Sifiso has also made a plea to the municipality to assist them with a bigger space in order to help more people.

He concluded by saying he is living proof that there is power in the Word of God to free any soul.

He also calls on parents and families with people struggling to beat the habit to contact him.

Oh, I’d go to the KZN South Coast for sure and live there for a few months. It’s not so far away and it’s definitely warmer there.

I’d go and stay in Durban. It’s warm there and there’s a lot to do and see. Ermelo is too much cold in the winter and there's nothing much to do.

Thailand! Ek was al daar en die klimaat is heerlik. Die probleem is met al die “spending”-geld sal ’n mens dalk nie wil terugkom nie.

Die Bahamas vir seker. Die dag- en nagtemperature verskil nie so baie daar nie. Ermelo se koue winters is nie vir my nie.

Terloops ...Terloops ...Twee vernietigende huisbrande het binne twee dae in Ermelo baie hartseer en verdriet vir die onderskeie huisbewoners en hulle naasbestaandes meegebring.

In die eerste voorval het ses lede van ’n familie, onder wie twee kleuters, hul lewens verloor in ’n brand wat Donderdag in die middernagtelike ure in hulle klein woning in Wesselton uitgebreek het.

In die tweede brand het die huisbewoners wel met hul lewens daarvan afgekom toe hul statige woning in Nederlandpark geheel en al in puin gelê is.

Net iemand wat self so ’n tragedie of verwoestende brand beleef het, sal werklik kan verstaan of saampraat.

Ons kan ons medelye betoon en simpatiseer, ja, maar daai gevoel van absolute hulpelosheid as alles wat ’n mens besit in ’n oogwink vernietig word, moet iets verskriklik wees.

Die aardse besittings kan

dalk weer met die verloop van tyd vervang word, maar die lewensverlies en herinneringe van goeie tye, minder goeie tye, liefde en teleurstellings, val en opstaan wat in daardie huise beleef is, kan met geen geld teruggekoop word nie.

Foto’s, erfstukke, versamelstukke en sommer net iets wat “myne” was, is nou vir ewig verlore en dit maak ’n spesiale plekkie in ’n mens se hart seer.

Dit is nie vir ons om vinger te wys of blaam uit te deel nie. Dit het gebeur en die horlosie kan nie teruggedraai word nie. Ons kan net as ’n gemeenskap hande vat en saamstaan om die slagoffers en hulle families op tasbare wyse by te staan, ongeag wie of wat hulle is. Dit is immers hoe ons ons ware kleure as ’n gemeenskap behoort te wys.

Een van DREAM se grootste suksesse was seker die geldinsamelingsprojek om vir ’n oud-Ermeloër, Anton Franken, ’n goeie voertuig te koop.

Ermelo het so mooi saamgestaan en binne drie maande kon Anton sy voertuig kontant koop.

Ons staan nou weer voor so ’n uitdaging waarin ons gestremde vriend, Rian van Rensburg, se Colt-bakkie se enjin vervang moet word.

Rian is ongeveer 15 jaar gelede op sy motorfiets deur ’n taxi van die pad af gedruk, het sy rug gebreek en is verlam gelaat.

Die groep jongmense wat hul daaraan toewy om die Woord van die Here te verkondig, het met arms vol “bederfies” by die kinderhuis opgedaag en die grootste deel van die oggend saam met kinders gespeel en gesels.

Nadat almal saam aan al die lekkernye gesmul het, het die Kids for Christ die oggend afgesluit met gewyde sang.

Annemarie Prinsloo van Kids for Christ het alle eer aan die Here gegee wat dit vir hulle moontlik maak om Sy Woord uit te dra.

Sy het ook al die borge wat mildelik gegee het, bedank vir die lekkernye en sy daag almal uit om iets vir die kinderhuis te doen of te gee, “al is dit net ’n paar minute van hulle tyd”.

Jonges wen beterbalTwee jong spelers van Ermelo Gholfklub, Hardo Prinsloo en Ewan Pretorius met ’n telling van 52 punte is as wenners aangewys van die beterbalwedstryd wat Saterdag by Ermelo Gholfklub beslis is.

Pierre Steyn en Pierre Grobler op 51 punte is tweede geplaas en Eric Trouw en Koos Brits op 50 punte het die derde plek ingeneem. 42 spelers het aan die wedstryd deelgeneem.

Eerskomende Saterdag vind ’n IPS-klubkompetisie op die gholfbaan plaas.

Speel pool vir EARSErmelo Animal Rescue Society (EARS) bied op 5 en 6 Augustus ’n poolkompetisie by Phatboys aan.

Inskrywings word by Phatboys gedoen en sluit op 31 Julie.

Die inskrywingsgeld is ’n 10kg-sak hondekos en baie pryse is op die spel.

Nie-ligaspelers ding op 5 Augustus om 18:00 mee en op 6 Augustus om 15:00 is dit die ligaspelers se beurt.

Ondersteun EARS om na verlore diere om te sien.

Sindiswa Mbokane wat twee drieë gedruk het is as beste agterspeler van die eerste span se wedstryd gekies.

Rugbyklub deur na eindstrydBeide Ermelo Rugbyklub se eerste en tweede span het hul halfeindwedstryde Saterdag gewen en deurgedring na die onderskeie eindwedstryde in die liga.

Die tweede span het teen Sasol 3 kragte gemeet en met 27 - 20 geseëvier en kom môre (Saterdag) in die eindstryd teen Standerton se tweedes op Standerton te staan.

Ermelo se eerste span het Middelburg met 20 -10 geklop om hulle plek in die eindstryd teen Standerton te bespreek.

Die wedstryd word ook Saterdag op Standerton gespeel.

Sindiswa Mbokane het twee drieë gedruk en is as agterspeler van die wedstryd gekies. Kobus Basson het ook ’n drie gedruk en is as voorspeler van die wedstyd aangewys.

Morné Barnett (doelskop) en Rohan Stander (strafdoel) het die res van Ermelo se punte behaal.

’n Hommeltuig soos die een op die foto het weggeraak.

Hommeltuig is soek’n Hommeltuig (“drone”) soortgelyk aan die een op die foto het Sondagmiddag tussen 17:00 en 17:30 in die omgewing van CP Hoogenhoutstraat weggeraak, vermoedelik in die rigting van John Vorsterstraat.

Wenners van die Hoëveld Viere-vroueafdeling. Jan van Niekerk (kompetisiesekretaris) saam met Maggie Barnard, Alta Schneider, Gerda Swanepoel en Sonja Mouton glimlag breed oor hul wentrofee.

Vier vroue wen rolbaltrofeeDie Hoëveld Viere-kampioenskap het die afgelope naweek op Ermelo se bane plaasgevind.

Mans- en vrouespanne van Sasol en Ermelo het teen mekaar om die gesogde titel meegeding.

Erika Nel Ermelo se vrouespan bestaande uit Maggie Barnard, Sonja Mouton, Gerda Swanepoel en Alta Schneider het skitterende rolbal gespeel en hul eerste wedstryd teen Sasol 1 met vyf punte gewen.

In hul wedstryd teen Sasol 2 kon die Ermeloërs net nie in die eerste helfte

van die wedstryd sorg dat die houte in hulle guns draai nie en met die koppe wat nog gespeel moes word wat al hoe minder raak, was hulle op ’n tydstip met 10 punte agter.

’n Pragrol deur Maggie het die wedstryd geswaai en Ermelo het die

laaste drie koppe met nuwe moed aangepak.

Ermelo het dapper tot die einde geveg en die wedstryd met net twee punte verloor.

Nadat al die spanne se telkaarte bereken is, was dit die Ermeloërs wat met die trofee weggestap het met Sasol 1 (Laurika Steenkamp) in die tweede plek en Sasol 2 (Annette van Ryneveld) derde.

Ermelo se manspan het derde in die toernooi geëindig, Andy Lourens en sy span (Sasol) het as wenners uit die stryd getree en die tweede plek het ook aan Sasol (Piet Grobler) gegaan.
