Jonathan Epstein, a veterinary epidemiologist, holds an Egyptian tomb bat captured in Saudi Arabia. A piece of genetic material matching MERS-CoV was detected in one of these bats found in the town of Bishah. There is currently no evidence that any of the human cases have had direct exposure to bats. More work needs to be done to understand whether MERS-CoV may be transmitted from bats to camels or people.

Two secondary cases were identified through contact tracing, among family members and colleagues who had not previously travelled abroad. Both secondary cases developed mild illness. All three patients recovered fully.

The Saudi minister of health, Abdullah al-Rabeeah, spoke to the nation publicly on April 20, reassuring Saudis in a televised news conference that there was no need for stricter preventative measures against MERS. He was removed from his post the next day. (Ali Zaki, the diagnostician who guessed correctly about the coronavirus first, was fired too—sacked in late 2012 by the Saudi Ministry of Health, Zaki says, not long after he sent the international infectious disease newsletter "ProMED" a note about the interesting case from Jeddah. That's why he's gone home to Egypt.)

Last year's hajj saw a sharp decline in attendance, apparently because of MERS fears. As cases continue to mount, including two recent cases in the U.S., world health officials are concerned that this year's hajj could spread the virus worldwide.

Oggiwith the addition of the cases reported yesterday (11 May 2014: 3 cases, 3 deaths) and today (12 May 2014: 9 cases, 6 deaths), globally there have now been 581 laboratory confirmed MERS-CoV infected individuals including 174 deaths.with the addition of the cases today (13 May 2014: 4 cases, 5 deaths), globally there have now been 585 laboratory confirmed MERS-CoV infected individuals including 179 deaths.

13 maggio 2014E' allarme per il virus Mers, nuovo caso registrato negli Stati Uniti13 maggio 07:02 - Le autorità sanitarie americane hanno confermato un secondo caso di contagio, stavolta in Florida, del virus Mers che ha provocato oltre un centinaio di morti in Arabia Saudita. L'ammalato sarebbe una persona che da Ryad sarebbe arrivato a Orlando passando per Londra, Boston e Atlanta. L'Oms ha convocato una riunione di emergenza per studiare l'aumento dei casi in diversi Paesi.Il primo caso dell'infezione sul suolo americano risale al 3 maggio: un uomo si era ammalato in Indiana di ritorno da un viaggio in Arabia Saudita.La Giordania ha intanto annunciato cinque morti per il virus. Secondo l'ultimo rapporto dell'Oms i casi di contagio dall'apparizione della cosiddetta Sindrome Respiratoria del Medioriente nel settembre 2102 sono stati 496. La Mers è considerato un "cugino" piu' letale ma meno contagioso della Sars che nel 2003 ha fatto quasi 800 morti in tutto il mondo.

Four of the 15 newly confirmed cases had been admitted to a hospital for underlying co-morbidities prior to the onset of MERS-CoV consistent symptoms suggesting transmission of the MERS-CoV had occurred in the hospital setting.
