Tess has been chosen to represent Team Singleton at the International Children’s Games to be held for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere in Lake Macquarie during December. There are 33 countries competing at the games. There have been 18 students from Singleton that have been selected for Swimming and Track and Field. Tess will be representing the Track and Field team in the 100m, Long Jump and Relay. Congratulations Tess on an amazing opportunity. Congratulations to Cody Purvis, Ethan Van Zyl and Emily Brown who were successful at Friday’s Hunter Regional Athletics Championships. These three students will be competing at Homebush at the State Championships in October. Most of our Year 5 and 6 students participated last Wednesday in the Newcastle Permanent Mathematics Competition. This is an annual event with awards given to students who perform well. Stay tuned later in the year for the results. The school will be sending home the NAPLAN test results this Thursday for students in Years 3 and 5. NAPLAN tests provide schools with valuable information on the literacy and numeracy skills of your children that are essential for ongoing learning. I would like to encourage parents and interested community members to become active in our P&C committee. It would be wonderful to have some new faces and ideas to work cohesively with the current P&C to enhance our school. Please try to make the next meeting which is scheduled for tonight - Wednesday, 3 September - in the School Library commencing at 7pm. We have had an overwhelming response to our Father’s Day Breakfast with close to 200 bacon and egg rolls to be cooked on Friday morning. The breakfast starts at 7am – 8.30 am. A huge thank you goes to Coles Singleton, who is sponsoring the morning. As you can appreciate we will only be serving those people who have returned their slips. It is a big day on Friday! Our annual school Fete will also be held and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organising committee for their tireless efforts over the past two terms in getting things organised. Please endeavour to attend from 10am as we will be opening the fete with a grand performance by our school band, accompanied by members of the high school and town bands. Please also note that on fete day staff will be busy running their stalls. Therefore the school suggests that kindergarten parents organise for either themselves or a grandparent/carer to accompany their child. If you are taking your child/ren home from school early on Fete Day, please ensure that you advise your child’s class teacher. SPS Girls’ Soccer Team in final 16 in the state!!

On Tuesday our Girls’ PSSA Soccer Team played their Final of our Hunter draw against Thornton Public School. Thornton was a very good side and came out strong scoring 2 goals in the first half. At half time we were 2-0 down but our girls knew they could do it. They had been attacking well and knew they could take this game to extra time.

In what was a very action packed second half our girls scored 4 goals to Thornton’s 2 goals making the score 4-4 at full time. Two five minute halves of extra time was played in very tense conditions. Our girls scored 2 goals in extra time to win the game 6-4!

We had great support from parents and from Year 6 who came and watched and cheered on our team. This support helped us win in difficult conditions and we hope to see as many supporters as possible at our next game on Monday, 15th September at Howe Park. We play against Guyra Central School and kick-off is at 10.15 am.

Well done girls!

Information from the DEC

Share a book at home

Children love to hear a story read aloud. Try reading with different voices, lots of emotion, invented sound effects and funny faces. Change the tone in your voice and vary its loudness or softness. Have fun and enjoy it.

It's a good idea to practise reading before sharing a book. Listen to your child talk about the story and the pictures. Try asking your child which parts of the books they found exciting, funny or different.

Research the internet

When kids use the internet they need skills and knowledge that are different from those found in books and other printed materials. These skills include such things as links, images, icons and searching.

The internet is a wonderful resource for finding things to support your child's literacy development. If you are searching for a good book to read to your child, try entering a publisher or an author's name into a reliable search engine such as Google.

Hunter Athletics

On Friday, 29 August the Regional Athletics Carnival was held at Glendale Sports Centre. Our school was well represented with 17 students competing on the day. Our students competed well and demonstrated our school’s core values, both in and out of competition.

It was a very successful day for our school with 3 students qualifying for the State Athletics Carnival to be held at Homebush on the 15th and 16th October. These students were Ethan Van Zyl- who came 3rd in the Junior Boys’ Discus; Emily Brown- who came 3rd in the 9 yrs Girls’ 100m and Cody Purvis who came 1st in the Senior Boys’ Discus.

We wish all three students the best of luck for the State Carnival.

Special thank you to Brooke Purvis who washed all 80 Upper Hunter Shirts from the carnival on Friday. Brooke volunteered to do this in her own time and this was greatly appreciated by all the Upper Hunter Schools.

Joel Andrews, Sports Co-ordinator

K-2 Sports Carnival

The K-2 Sports Carnival will be held on Friday, 12 September at Cook Park. The children will walk down to the oval after the roll has been called. The students will be at Cook Park from 9.30 am and anticipate completion of activities at approximately 2.00 pm.

To ensure the sun safety of our children we are requesting parent helpers to erect shades.

Children are to wear sensible clothing in their house colours. Class teachers will let the children in their class know which house they are in (Gordon-yellow, Lawson-blue, Kendall-red, Paterson-green).

The canteen will not be open on the day so students need to pack plenty of drinks and food for the day.

Children will return to school after the carnival. If they are leaving early they will need to be signed off by their teachers.

Looking forward to your company and support for the day.

Sharmyn Zeidler Carnival Organiser

LEGO Expo 2014

The fantastic “make believe” LEGO creations will be received in the Library tomorrow from 8:30 until 9:30am and also during first break. Judging will take place at 2:00 pm tomorrow and winners will be announced on Friday during the fete.

Unfortunately, LEGO Australia has been unable to supply the barrel of bricks and prizes this year. Consequently there has not been an opportunity for students who do not have LEGO to build from the barrel in the Library this week.

Many thanks to our prize sponsors, namely 8Daysaweek Performance Coaching; Majestic Cinemas and That Little Art Place for their generous contributions to the prize pool.

Students please remember to fill in and attach your entry card to your creation and to collect it from the Library by 2:00pm on Friday 5th September.

Good luck to all entrants and remember “everyone is awesome”.

Libby Morris and Honor Lianos - LEGO team.

Intensive Swimming

All children in Year 2 and selected children in Year 3-6 will be attending an Intensive Learn-to-Swim campaign in Weeks 6 and 7 of Term 4 (Monday 10th November until 21st November 2014). This will occur every school day during these two weeks. This intensive program is a NSW Department of Education initiative; therefore, it is a recommended program for all Year 2 children. We believe that every child should be able to swim at least 25 metres with correct breathing. An intensive swimming program is of vital importance for all children because of our Australian lifestyle and it allows them to enjoy water sports with safety.

The cost will be $75.00 for the two weeks (includes lessons and bus). Please forward permission notes back to school before Friday, 24 October 2014. Permission notes have been sent home. Please note: Sessions times are at 1.15 - 2.00 pm and 2.00 - 2.45 pm.
