Carl Koehler thinks he knows. Carl Andrew Koehler is a local historian, arborist, and naturalist -- the author of the book Talking Trees & Spirit Trails. Carl graduated from Avoca Central School and attended SUNY Cortland. He has worked in forestry science for the National Science Foundation and the Na- tional Institute for Climate Change Research. Currently, he is a consulting arborist in private industry, traveling with his hiking buddy, an Elkhound-mix named “Gyfa”. Carl’s book tells the tale of him and Gyfa on their trail- tree-nding adventures along the Finger Lakes Trail. This led him to a study of how trees were used as markers to create a navigable system of woodland trails across the Finger Lakes Region, long before Europeans came. At 4 PM on Friday, February 6, Carl will present “Talking Trees”: Guides in the Wilderness as part of the Steuben County Historical Society Winter Lecture Series. His presentation, in the hall of Bath’s Centenary Methodist Church, is free and open to the public. Winter Farmers’ Market Coming to Bath A new winter farmers’ market is set to open Feb 10th at the VA Medical Center in Bath! The market will fea- ture several local farmers offering a wide selection of locally grown products. According to the USDA data New York State leads the nation with over 180 winter markets. A recent USDA survey shows rise in winter farmers markets according to Kathleen Merrigan, agriculture deputy secretary, the updated National Farmers Market Directory indicates that the number of farmers markets has increased by 38%. Dened as a market that operates at least once between November and March, the number has risen from 886, recorded in 2010, to 1,225. These winter markets account for nearly 17% of the nation’s 7,222 operating farmers markets. “Consumers are looking for more ways to buy locally grown food throughout the year,” explains Merrigan. “Through winter markets, American farmers are able to meet this need and bring in additional income to support their families and businesses.” The Bath Winter Market at the VA will feature vendors selling locally produced eggs, honey, maple syrup, fruit leather, jams, herbs, artisan breads, chicken, pork, and beef. A winter farmers’ market offers the community the ability to purchase local food year-round. Items like local meats, eggs and cheese are available year round and often plentiful in the winter months. Other farm products that were preserved during the summer can be purchased throughout the winter like dried fruit, jams and herbs. Honey and maple syrup are very shelf-stable and are available year round. The Bath Winter Farmers’ Market at the VA will be open the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays through the winter months, from 11:00am – 2:00pm, and will be located inside the Leisure Room (Building 92), the rst build- ing on the right as you enter the medical center. The market is open to the public. The Bath Winter Market is made possible through a Farmers’ Market Promo- tion Program grant awarded to Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County and by the Bath VA Medical Center. History of West Union Township ContinuedTerry Smith, Town Historian

The Town of West Union was formed on April 25, 1845, when 2300 acres was separated from Greenwood Town-ship, of which it was then a part. The residents felt that Greenwood was too far distant for their needs and circulated a petition to form their own town, which was nearly half of the Town of Greenwood. The petition called for the town to be called Green, but that was rejected because there was already a town of that name in the state. They then requested Union, which was rejected for the same reason. They added West, and the bill passed. The election for the fi rst offi cers in this town was held at the house of John Hauber, on the present site of Rexville village, May 6, 1845. The fi rst ballot box was a sugar bucket with a slot cut in the cover. David Sherman was elected supervisor, and Moses Forbes town clerk. The population of West Union at that point was 539. Five years later the number had grown to 950. Population reached its peak in 1860 with 1392, in 1892 was 1,150, and in 2000 was 399. The hamlet of Rexville got its name from the Rexford brothers, Charles and Daniel, who came into the valley of Bennett’s Creek in 1849 and built a saw mill on the site of the village named for them. They also erected the fi rst frame building in the town and opened a tavern which was called the “ Eagle.”(see photo) These enterprising broth-ers were also instrumental in bringing about many improvements in the settlement and were in all respects useful and progressive citizens. However, in 1859, they sold the tavern to James McCormick and soon afterward left the village. The tavern was afterward known as High Jimmy’s. As mentioned, three early settlements began to prosper in West Union. They were West Union Corners, Wileysville, and Rexville. Only Rexville remains. Wileyville, now spelled without the “s”, was a site of early industry with its own post offi ce. John Wiley built the fi rst saw and grist mills in the township there in 1849 and 1850. Wileyville is now a four corners in the western part of town. West Union, high up in the northwest corner of the township, also had its own post offi ce in the Barney home for several generations, but by the late 1800’s, that was all it had. Continued next week.

Our Winter Weather

No doubt, the temperatures have dropped significantly. And we also have a long way to go before we get any real

change in the weather. Yes, it is very cold but it is also winter in the northeast. Please know that the district takes

many precautions when considering weather related factors by planning school attendance and activities appropriate-

ly along with thinking through the following:

Busses are kept inside our bus garage overnight (with minimal heat) and warm up quickly before they pick up stu-

dents. Districts where busses are kept outdoors overnight have trouble starting and/or warming up on the inside

by the time students need to be picked up.

We have instructed all bus drivers to stop along their routes to ask any walker if they want a ride (no matter how

close they are to school) and have also asked the drivers to wait for students at their bus stop so that students do

not have to wait outside as we see some students not dressed appropriately given the weather conditions.

We track the weather constantly using various sources and look at wind chill factors and the weather by the

hour. Most of the time when it is this cold, the temperature will only improve by a few degrees between 7:00am

for an 8:00am start to school and 9:00am for a 10:00am start (two hour delay). In some cases the negative wind

chill factor may actually increase by 9:00am. The disruptions to the education of our students, to our school

schedule, and to our working families with childcare needs for a two hour delay when the temperature only im-

proves a couple of degrees helps to guide us in making the correct call.

Finally, we get asked many times; “Why does Addison have school when other districts are on a two hour delay or

closed?” The simple answer is this: Every district is different and the variables are different. For example: more

walkers than bus riders; more open areas with higher wind speeds and gusts; somewhat varied weather patterns and

temperature disparities between districts; busses parked outside overnight vs. inside; districts near water/lakes; and

other various factors/reasons depending on the individual dynamics, expectations, and culture of the district.

Ultimately and in all cases, while taking into account what is going on in our region, we will do what is best for the

Addison community at large; making sure to be safe, respectful, and responsible!

Valley Early Childhood School Celebrate Winnie The Pooh

The Valley Early Childhood School had a special birth-

day celebration Friday, January 16th. It was Winnie the

Pooh’s birthday and all the students and staff celebrated by

having Winnie the Pooh Fun Day. All the students participat-

ed in Winnie the Pooh-themed activities. In the gym, we had

an obstacle course set up with: Rabbit’s hole, put the bees in the honey pot, and pin-the-tail

on the Eeyore . We also listened to a story read by librarian Mrs. Parsons from the Addison

Public Library. She read a Winnie the Pooh story and gave each student a snowball. We would

like to thank her for the handmade snowballs—the student had a ball playing with them!

Class of 1960 Scholarship History The upcoming Class of 1960 15th scholarship an-niversary would not have been possible without Ed Symonds. Back in the nineties when our class fi rst entertained the idea of yearly scholarships it seemed like a farfetched unlikely happening. Bill Moore and I pitched our idea at a fi ve year class reunion. There were naysayers, but after talking about our idea, a sizeable (a half dozen or so) committee was formed. Not once in the next fi ve years did we ever meet. At the upcoming reunion Bill and I decided to try once again. This time Bill & I decided to take the ball and run with it. We ask Carolyn Stewart to join our committee of two, to get a female point of view. We discussed applying for a tax exempt number for the incoming donations. After looking over all the paperwork involved, I knew there had to be a much simplier process. Someone suggested asking the school if we could use their tax exempt number being our scholarships would benefi t the school and students. I called the school board president Ed Symonds at home. He told me to put a presentation together, present it at the upcoming school board meeting, less than a week away. Ed didn’t make any promises but he gave me the impression that it was more or less a done deal, if I made any sense at the Board meeting. Later that Monday evening I received a call from Ed. The board had discussed and voted in favor of al-lowing our Class of 1960 to use the ACS tax exempt number. The Class of 1960 is the fi rst and still the only class awarding yearly scholarships. 14 years, 25 scholarships and $12,000 awarded.

Love, Your Family

John J. Dgien, Jr. John J. Dgien, Jr., age 81, of Addison, NY, passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at the Bath V.A. Medical Center. John was born on September 6, 1933 in Williamsport, PA to John and Rosie (Stavoy) Dgien. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Confl ict. After returning home, he married Patricia Hunt on August 22, 1959 at St. Catherine’s Church in Addison where he was a lifelong parishioner. He devoted 38 years to his career with Ingersoll Rand in Painted Post. Many may remember John as a baseball coach for the Addison Little League’s “Dodgers” team. While he enjoyed being on the baseball field, his true passion was spending his time on the golf course. When he was not golfi ng, he would be playing horseshoes or Euchre with his family and friends. Later in life, he received great joy from watching his grandsons race at Woodhull raceway. John is survived by his wife: Patricia Dgien of Addison; four sons: Joseph (Debra) Dgien of Cameron Mills, NY, Michael (Shirley) Dgien of Rangoon, Burma (Myanmar), Andrew (Karen) Dgien of Howard, NY, Paul (Gina) Dgien of Cameron Mills, NY; daughter: Sandra (Brian) Kelsey of Big Flats, NY; brother: Anthony Dgien of Williamsport, PA; 15 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his son, John C. Dgien; brother: Frank Dgien; and sisters: Josephine Fredericks, Helen Shelman, Anne Mecum, Mary Smith, and Sophie DeSanto. Family and friends called at Carpenter-Flint Funeral Home, 10 Wall St. Addison, NY on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 from 1:00 PM to 3:00PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 51 Maple Street, Addison, NY on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 10:30 AM with Fr. James Jaeger celebrating. Memorial donations in John’s honor may be submitted to the Addison Little League Association, P.O. Box 164, Addison, NY 14801. To view a video tribute of John’s life, or to share kind words and memories, please visit www.CarpentersFuneralHome.com.

The New Year Should Start A New Chapter in Our Lives A brand new years is here at last; Twelve months that lie ahead.

Will they be wasted, like in the past, Or wisely spent instead? Those worthy resolutions made Describe your future plan;

So follow them before they fade, And do the best you can. To start with, you must learn to share: For instance, making sure,

That clothes which you no longer wear Are given to the poor.Your House of Worship where you pray Will keep your goals in sight,

And show you there’s no better way To start the new year right.Gloria Nowak
