ABOUTTown

Ladies and Gentleman! Children of All Ages! Barrington Youth & Family Services (BYFS) invites you to join them at the annual BYFS Gala, “The Greatest Show on Earth” on April 18, 2020 at Barrington Hills Country Club. Come one, come all to enjoy the excitement and splendor—the dazzling spectacle, an evening of excitement and surprises to benefit our community. The BYFS Auxiliary Board, led by co-chairs Crystal Pepper and Cindy Galley, is responsible for planning and hosting the annual event, which aims to raise $250,000. “We are very excited to host BYFS’s annual gala at Barrington Hills Country Club. With a fun circus theme for our guests, we’re having a great time planning and designing this year’s gala. We have some fun surprises in store for the evening and we’re anticipating a sold-out event again this year,” says event co-chair Crystal Pepper. The mission of BYFS, which was founded in 1972, is to offer counseling, education, and prevention solutions to support the social, emotional, and psychological well-being of youth and their families in the Barrington area. BYFS is a vibrant, innovative, go-to agency that collaboratively responds to the social and emotional needs of the community. “Barrington Youth & Family Services is a community-based, nonprofit social service agency. Our goal is to build healthier families by providing counseling and preventative programming to children, teens, couples, and

families. Our approach focuses on supporting the social, psychological, and emotional well-being of all we serve,” Betsy Wintringer, BYFS executive director said. “Monies raised at the gala will go to fund advances, improvements, and expansion of counseling services and prevention programming for the community. BYFS remains committed to offsetting the cost of delivering critical counseling services to anyone in need in the Barrington area, regardless of their ability to pay. Our commitment lies in building a kinder community where people have access to tools and resources that empower them in their own journey for mental wellness.” “BYFS’s educational and community-based programs and strategies are designed to reach people outside of traditional health care settings and often impact individuals and groups who would not typically seek out assistance through counseling services. BYFS responds to the needs of the community by ensuring that they are flexible and meet the changing needs of the community while removing the stigma associated with seeking assistance,” event Co-chair Cindy Galley said. Details: Event tickets are $195 per person and will be available online in mid-March. For event details, sponsorship opportunities, or information on auction items, follow Barrington Youth and Family Services on Facebook and Instagram or contact gala co-chairs, Cindy Galley ([email protected]) or Crystal Pepper ([email protected]).

WARM WINTER’S NIGHT GALA Jeffrey Pride Foundation

Saturday, March 14Cotillion Banquets6 p.m.

Put on your cocktail attire and bring your cell phones to bid in the fundraising auctions in support of The Jeffrey Pride Foundation for Pediatric Cancer Research. The 20th Anniversary Warm Win-ter’s Night Gala is an evening that includes, dinner, drinks, silent and live auctions, live music from High Society and dancing. JPF is an all-volunteer charity founded in 2000 in memory of Jeffrey Pride and in response to learning that pediatric cancer research is severely underfunded, receiving less than 4% of all money raised to fight cancer. Over the past 15 years they have supported drug research, clinical trials, and genomic testing of children’s cancer cells. This provides children with the most promising, targeted, and specific treatments for their cancers. These new developments quite possibly could have changed Jeff’s treatment and he and other children like him might have been healthy adults today. JPF has helped cover the actual financial costs for kids going through clinical trials, covering their administrative expenses, those not covered by their insurance—and so much more. This year’s event will honor a local family foundation. The Cotillion Banquets is located at 360 s. Creekside Drive in Palatine. Tickets are $250 per person or $2,250 for a table of ten. THE GARDEN CLUB OF BARRINGTON was awarded three special “Garden Club of America Judge’s Commendations” for their uniquely themed Club Photography Show, “Bathing in the Forest,” displayed last fall at Barrington’s White House. Two commendations were awarded for specific classes and one for the show itself, noting the interesting schedule, the image display method and excellent quality.

Sally Douglas and Kelcey Roberts co-chaired the event with their committee Mary Bottie, Cindy Seibert and Cheryl Tanaka. The theme was based on the Japanese Shinrin-yoku Forest Therapy, the medicine of simply being in the forest. The term means “taking the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing”. All of the classes related to this theme in different ways. One of the more unique and fun was the theme “Enchanted Forest” which required a color image of naturally occurring faces in trees.

Garden Club of America judges awarded ribbons in six different classes of competition. Cheryl Tanaka won first place in two classes: Class 4, “The Black Forest” and Class 6, “Sea of Trees”; she was also awarded “Best in

Sally Douglas won first place in Class 2, “The Red Forest” and Mary Bottie won first place in Class 3, “The Amazon Rain Forest” and was also awarded the “Novice Award”. Ginger Glantz won first place in Class 5, “Enchanted Forest”.

The judges explained to the group how they viewed and judged the photographs, highlighting the nuances of photo composition, rhythm and flow, and the importance of telling a story. All members delighted in either participating in the competition or in deepening their understanding of what brings true color to a photograph. A club show such as this provides a wonderful opportunity for novices to participate in and learn about photography competition in preparation for the possibility of competing at a regional or national show. The “People’s Choice Award” was a new addition allowing guests at the Preview Cocktail party to vote for one favorite in each class. Fun fact: in the end, the “People’s Choice” agreed with the Judges half of the time! -By Laura Ekstrom
