Crime Prevention Tips - Vehicle Theft

Every year nearly 36,000 vehicles worth Rs.115 crore are stolen in India. Only about

14,500 are traced, often in unroadworthy condition, with many components missing.

These vehicles are stolen because the thief is given the opportunity. Very often cars are

left improperly secured and unattended. It is only with the installation of anti-theft

devices that a thief's attempts can be frustrated. Parking in a secured parking facility

(garage, petrol pump, etc.) at night also safe-guards against theft.

If such parking facilities are not available, parking in a well-lit area is the next best

alternative. It is advisable to get the number of your car etched on your windscreens and

window glasses. It helps the authorities trace your car if stolen.

Simple do's and don'ts to prevent theft

What you should do...

Never leave keys in the ingnition or leave the car running, even for a moment.

Use securing devices like steering lock, clutch lock, brake lock, etc.

Double-check all doors, including the boot.

If possible install loud alarm systems in your car, so that thieves will be

discouraged even if they manage to break into your car.

Try and use detachable music systems and take them with you whenever you

park the car for a long time, so that there is no temptation for thieves to make a

quick steal when they see expensive items in parked cars.

Paint car number on the front and rear of the body, apart from number plates.

Ideally, have it etched on the windscreens and window glasses too. This prevents

them from being misused by criminals using fake number plates.

What you should not do...

Never leave the vehicle door unlocked, nor the windows partially open. Make

sure that the quarter glasses are properly secured.

Do not leave valuables inside the car, even if it is locked, as this will attract

thieves.

Do not cut down on extra fittings, as these tempt prospective thieves.

Never, we repeat, never leave the key dangling in the ignition.

In case your vehicle is stolen...

Report the theft to the nearest police station.

Inform your insurance company.

while staying in your lane (Try to stick to the side). When Turning Right... Look at the Rearview mirror, give Indicator, sound Horn, and take turn

while staying in your lane.(Try to take a wider turn). Stay in your Lane, and use the correct Signals. Don't leave your line. Notice all the Traffic Signs you see on your way, and act apropriately. When taking Circles... give way to your right. Don't assume that the other Motorists know your intention. It is always necessary to give

proper Signals while Starting, Turning, Slowing, and Parking your vehicle. On crossings without control system (Traffic Lights), give adequate opportunity to Pedestrians

(the people walking on the road) to avoid accidents. Be careful of Pedestrians who come from between vehicles (ie. not on zebra crossing), outside

Schools and Bus Stops. When crossing Animal-driven Vehicles, give enough place by slowing down, and Do Not Sound

Horn, because it may scare the Animal and it may run away. (a)When the road is divided by White Lines, then stay to the left. If needed, you may cross

the line.(b)When the road is divided by Yellow Lines, then stay to the left. You shall, in any case, not cross the line.

It is mandatory for every motorist to give way immediately to any Ambulance or Fire Engine. It is a duty of each citizen, for the sake of saving lives.

Without permission of a Policeman on Duty, nobody is allowed to drive vehicles on special pathways made for Cycles or Pedestrians.

'U' turn - The driver must be careful, and should confirm it is safe to turn by looking in the rearview mirror. U turns are not allowed on busy roads. Proper signal for turning right must be given.

Be careful and look on the road when taking your vehicle out of garage.Take someone's help if necessary.

Park your vehicle only where parking is allowed. Do Not park in places like: Crossings, Turns, Corners, High speed ways, Corners of hilly roads, footpath, Bus Stop, School, Railway gate, opposite direction to road, specially at night.

During Night, when a Vehicle, Cycle, or Animal Driven Vehicle approaches you, turn your headlights to 'dim' position and keep your vehicle slow.

Never park a vehicle on a Railway Line. When crossing a Railway line without a Gate, listen carefully and look around to see if a Train is coming. Go further only when confirmed.

Crime Prevention Tips - Home/Apartment Security

APARTMENT SECURITY

Security in an apartment building is as effective as you make it. Don't leave

it entirely up to the superintendent of the building or the police. By

following these suggestions you can make the building a safer place in

which to live.

Report suspicious persons to the building incharge and / or police.

When the buzzer rings, check the identify of the caller before opening the

door. Refer unknown persons to the building incharge.

Do not identify yourself as a female living alone-use only your initials on the

building directory.

Secure sliding doors on the balcony with "jimmy bars".

Use more than one lock on the door.

Use peepholes, door wedges and smoke alarms.

HOME SECURITY TIPS

OPENING YOUR DOOR TO STRANGERS

Take great care ...... you don't ever have to open the door.

Peepholes .... to see who's there

Wide-angle peepholes are a highly recommended viewing device because the

person outside does not know that you see him / her.

Chain locks ..... a false sense of safety

They are not recommended because they are mounted with short screws

and have weak chains.

Door wedges really work

A door wedge is a better alternative when you wish to open your door only a

few inches to speak to a stranger. This device is useful for children and women

who are alone at home. It can be found in most hardware stores.

Use smoke alarms.

Test it regularly and replace batteries when needed.

Crime Prevention Tips - Safer Neighbourhood

THINGS YOU CAN DO TO MAKE YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD SAFER

Get involved. Volunteer to help on community and neighbourhood anti-crime committees and other community improvement efforts.

Encourage groups you belong to – religious, civic, social- to help stop crime. Report crimes and suspicious activities to police. Agree to testify when necessary.

Stand up for what you believe in if you want a safe community. Know your neighbours and agree to look out for each other. Set up a Neighbourhood watch or community patrol, working with police. Make sure your streets are well-lighted. Call your local government if you think

your street is not well-lit. Clean up the neighbourhood. Involve everyone. Graffiti, litter, abandoned cars, and

run-down buildings tell criminals that you don't care about where you live or about each other. Call your local public works department and ask for help cleaning it up.

Crime Prevention Tips - Youth and Drugs

YOUTH AND DRUGS

"How do I know if my child is abusing drugs or alcohol"

If you find drugs or items such as smoking pipes, it is a strong indication that your child is using or experimenting with drugs. Behaviour is another indicator.

Watch for :

Abrupt mood swings or attitude changes. Sudden decline in attendance or performance at work or school. Sudden resistance to discipline at home or school. Poor relationship with family and friends. Unusual temper tantrums. Borrowing money from friends and relatives. Stealing from home, school or work. Increased secrecy about actions or possessions. Hanging out with new group of friends (especially ones who use

drugs)

These behaviours may indicate drug use but they may also indicate normal growing pains. The best way to know for sure is to observe your child, get to know his or her friends, but most importantly, TALK. Communication is essential for your child's growth and safety.

If you know that your child is taking drugs, take action and do not ignore the problem. Explain the harmful effects of drugs, including the long-term effects to one's physical, social and mental well-being.

Crime Prevention Tips - Domestic Servant

Hire qualified / experienced chowkidars only.

Check the antecedents / credentials of chowkidars and domestic servants

before hiring them. Insist on references from their previous employers.

Furnish their full particulars to your police station in the format suggested by

them.

Always employ different chowkidars for day and night duties.

Brief all the security men/ chowkidars/ lift men about various aspects of

security. Such as under -

1. To make enquiry if a taxi or autorikshaw is seen parked inside the

compound or outside the building for a long time.

2. To make enquiry with the people bringing in or taking out heavy

parcels, suitcases, etc.

3. Inform Police in case they find any vehicle parked inside the building

(if ownership is not known) for a long time.

All the residents of the locality should be briefed on the following :

That whenever they employ any new servant, police station should be informed.

His photographs, fingerprints and other details must be obtained and verified.

Whenever any family plans to go out of the city for a long time, they should

inform Police (beat officers), so that special watch can be kept.

They should be advised to install a door with iron bars inside the flat, superior

quality night latches and special eye lens on the main door, so that the door is

opened only after identifying the visitors. Ideally, interaction with strangers

and vendors should be through the grilled door. Also install a high wattage

light source with pilfer proof cover outside the main door.

They should not keep huge cash, valuable ornaments etc., in the house but may

use bank lockers.

They should avoid discussing money transactions and other important family

matters in the presence of servants/ outsiders.

They should not humiliate the servants on petty matters. Nor should they

penalise them for small damages.

It is important to inform the Police about any suspicious happening or

unclaimed object found in suspicious circumstances. Extend full cooperation to

the Police.

Crime Prevention Tips - Counterfeit Currency

However skillfully you forge a currency note the genuinity cannot be achieved. The differences will be due to the paper, ink ,human element and above all unavailability of the security measures taken by the currency press by the government.

The genuine notes are made of a special type of paper which is manufactured in security paper mill, Hoshangabad (M.P). In printing, multicolored impressions are used with the intaglio printing process.

The forgers use various methods for making the counterfeit currency,

1. Photographic method 2. Process made forgery 3. Hand engraved blocks 4. Lithographic process 5. Hand drawn forgery

Forged notes usually exhibit certain characteristic differences which facilitate easy identification. There are number of distinguishable features when compared with genuine notes. Following differentiating features are found.

1. Size : While cutting in bundles the size of the forged notes are not same, while the size of genuine currency is fixed.

2.Size of printed design : The technique used for printing the genuine notes is highly sophisticated. It gives each and every line in printing with clear and sharp images. It is not possible with the counterfeit currency.

3.Watermark: In counterfeit notes the watermark is made by using opaque ink, painting with white solution, stamping a die, engraved with the picture of Mahatma Gandhi and also by applying oil, grease or wax to give the transparent image of Mahatma Gandhi.

4.Security Thread: In genuine notes the security thread is incorporated into the paper at the time of manufacture of the paper. The security thread in counterfeit notes is imitated by drawing a line by pencil or printing a line with grey ink or by using an aluminum thread while pasting two thin sheets of paper. In genuine notes over security thread one can read the word RBI and BHARAT( in Hindi).

5.Numbering : In counterfeit currency it is difficult to reproduce the same shape of individual numbers again and again with accuracy. The alignment of figures is also difficult to maintain by forgers. Spreading of ink, smaller or bigger number, inadequate gaps, different alignments in numbers can be regarded with suspicion.

6.Quality of printing: In counterfeit notes the printed lines will be broken and there may also be smudging of ink.

Crime Prevention Tips - Before You Invest

Check out the following before you invest :

Promise: Double your money in two months or less.

Reality: All schemes offering high returns of double money within two months or such

short spans have no legal sanction. Nor are they reliable

Promise: Post dated cheques as a guarantee for this.

Reality: Postdated cheques are not a guaranteed payment device, as they could bounce

when you finally present them.

Promise: Claim they do it by investing in some wonder projects or plantations.

Reality: There are no projects, especially agriculture based, that can give you returns in

any time less than a year. In fact, tree plantations take at least 10 years to mature.

Promise: Huge sums of money by being part of a gift chain i.e. you gift a certain

amount of money to two people, then find two people who will enter the chain by

gifting you the sum. They in turn will get two more subscribers, and so on.

Reality: Gift schemes and chains are an offence under the Prize Chits and Money

Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act of 1978.

Promise: As the scheme is run by a registered company, it is absolutely safe.

Reality: Even registered companies are not allowed to promote and run any such

schemes.

Crime Prevention Tips - Foreign Jobs

There are many unauthorized agents and sub-agents claiming to recruit for

vacancies in the gulf countries. These agents collect huge amounts from the

needy job seekers by giving attractive and misleading advertisements in

newspapers.

Precautions while applying for new passports and seeking

jobs outside India.

While applying for a new passport, fill up the application form and pay

the money at the counter of the Passport office personally, instead of the

self proclaimed agents loitering outside.

There are no authorised agents appointed by the Passport Authority.

Passports cannot be SOLD. Touts may try it on you, but remember

travelling on a bogus Passport is Illegal.

Look for the registration number of the recruiting agents on all

advertisements for jobs outside India.

Insist on seeing the original registration certificate of the agent and check

its validity before handing over your passport.

Get your passport, valid visa, travel tickets and ensure completion of all

immigration formalities before handing over full payment.

Payment should be made only to the authorised agents and receipt thereof

must always be obtained.

The job seeker should know that the agent is bound to give employment

to the candidate within 60 days from making the final payment.

Prior agreement should be made regarding the type of job and terms of

agreement should be gone through carefully.

In the event of any foul play, the job seeker should immediately contact

the local police station or CID (Crime Branch), Jaipur.

Crime Prevention Tips - Banks & Vacation Checklist

VACATION CHECKLIST

Ensure all points of entry are secured, especially windows. Use light timers that will give your home the appearance of occupancy. Tell trusted neighbours how long you'll be gone and who might be visiting your home in your

absence. Leave a phone number with a relative or neighbour in case of emergency. Place valuable jewellery, coin collection and documents in a safety deposit box or a burglary-

proof safe. Have somebody mow your lawn. Leave a car in your driveway. If you do not have a spare car, borrow one. Consider a house sitter. Check with your insurance company. They may provide home checks for vacationers.

Crime Prevention Tips - Burglary Prevention

BURGLARY PREVENTION

Burglars go through neighbourhood looking for uncut lawn and stuffed mail boxes. In the evening they look for darkened houses or lights that have been left on too long.

1. Don't tempt a thief

Always lock your garden sheds and garages. Use curtains on garage and basement windows. Never leave notes on your door such as "Gone shopping".

2. Locks..... get the best

No lock, regardless of its quality, can be truly effective. Key-in-lock knobs provide minimum security. Ask a locksmith for advice on your situation.

Change locks immediately if your keys are lost or stolen. When moving into a new home, have all locks changed.

3. Outside

Have adequate exterior lighting. A motion-sensitive light is recommended for backyards. Trim trees and shrubs so that they cannot be used as hiding places for intruders. Make sure your door hinges are on the inside.

4 . Windows

Most windows can be pinned for security. Drill a 3/16" hole on a slight downward slant through the inside window frame and halfway into

the outside frame-place a nail in the hole to secure the window.

5. Alarms

An alarm system is excellent for home security. It provides peace of mind to home owners, especially while on vacation. There is a wide variety of alarm systems on the market. Make several enquiries to different companies for the best security system available to you.

Crime Prevention Tips - Annoying Phone Calls

ANNOYING PHONE CALLS

Refers to nuisance calls, obscene calls of various types. These annoying

telephone calls range from relatively harmless pranks initiated by

children, through offensive and potentially harmful acts, to clearly

dangerous threats that must be countered.

Nuisance calls are commonly made by children and are probably

harmless. You may want to report it to the police. THE BEST ADVICE IS

TO SIMPLY HANG UP.

Do not encourage a return call. If the calls persists to the point that they

become harassment, report it to the police. Caller Line Identification

(Caller ID) service is available on your phone that you may find helpful.

Obscene calls represent abnormal behaviour that could be potentially

dangerous. People who make obscene calls find gratification from the

response of the recipient. The best initial reaction is to hang up

immediately. Telephone companies have recommended that women list

their names in the telephone directory without the prefix "Miss" or "Mrs"

and to use initials only of first names. Another possibility for a woman

who has been bothered by obscene calls is to obtain an unlisted telephone

number.

If obscene calls persist, the police will investigate. An important

preliminary step in the investigation is to establish a time pattern for the

calls. This will assist the police in apprehending the caller.
