People have told us for many years that a community centre will never be built, but it is now very close to becoming a reality. Although construction of the structure is funded, no cash is available for equipment, so it is up to us all to find the money. The coming year will determine if our community centre is going to be run-of-the-mill or outstanding; the deciding factor will be how much effort harbour residents are prepared to put in the make the difference.

Planning consent for the centre to be constructed on Site Five (in Harbour Quay, opposite the Sovereign harbour Yacht Club) was granted on 7th July . Following this, the Sovereign Harbour Ltd offices that occupied the site were demolished and the site cleared in readiness. It is anticipated that construction will begin in September, with the centre ready for occupation in mid-2016.About £40,000 will be needed to equip

the centre to the required standard, and, once construction has started, the Community Association will be able to start bidding for grant funding from a number of sources. However, the support of residents will also be crucial if the target is to be met, and that can start right now.

Put simply, a £10 donation from every harbour household would meet the target

A Virgin Money Giving campaign has been started which will allow individual donations. We hope residents, and others, will support the campaign, which will ensure our community centre will be the pride of our neighbourhood. To get the ball rolling, the SHRA, as agreed by the members at this year’s AGM, has donated £500. It is hoped that groups with an interest in using the facility will also help by organising supporting events.Click here to visit the SHCA’s MoneyGiving pageClick Campaigns> Fill the Community Chest.Click here to donate If you are a UK Tax Payer, please tick the “Gift Aid” box to get an additional 25% from the government.

Pacific House - the first office centre on Eastbourne’s emerging Sovereign Harbour Innovation Park – has now been completed. To coincide with this, a web site for the Innovation Park has been launched at: www.sovereigninnovationpark.co.uk. Twenty two prospective tenants viewed the offices on the first open afternoon on16th July, with a number reserving offices and further viewings booked.

Pacific House is a three-floor business centre of striking contemporary architectural design. With offices available within it ranging from 627 sq ft up to the whole 25,235 sq ft building, it is suitable for small, medium and large companies.

There are 11 small suites on the ground floor (from 627 to 952 sq ft), six medium-sized offices on the first floor (1,258 - 1,897 sq ft) and two large offices on the second floor (4,402 & 4,412 sq ft). If appropriate, these could be combined or sub-divided to suit occupiers’ needs.

In addition to the office suites, Pacific House incorporates a light-filled atrium, break-out areas for informal meetings and a conference room. It is designed to be a low-energy building with parking spaces for 130 cars.

Developer Sea Change Sussex – the not-for-profit economic development company for East Sussex - has already received a significant number of letting enquiries from companies in Eastbourne and further afield. In addition to the 22 prospective occupiers who viewed the property on 16th June, further viewings were arranged over the coming days. Sovereign Harbour Residents Association members and Eastbourne Borough councillors were also shown the building in late July.

Construction Started in September 2014 and Completed On Time

In addition to Pacific House, Sovereign Harbour Innovation Park has sites suitable for further business premises up to 80,000 sq ft. Companies can commission Sea Change to develop bespoke freehold or leasehold properties for them, or buy serviced sites to develop their own.

The Innovation Park project is designed to provide an economic boost to the area by providing high-quality premises and sites on previously disused land. It aims to help local firms expand and to attract companies to the area, creating jobs.

The Park is three miles from Eastbourne town centre and accessed from Pacific Drive, off Pevensey Bay Road. It is five minutes’ walk to the cafés, restaurants and boutiques of Sovereign Harbour’s prestigious marina, as well as a retail park including a large supermarket, cinema and gym.

Anyone interested in offices in Pacific House or sites on the Sovereign Harbour Innovation Park should contact one of Sea Change’s agents:

Sovereign Harbour’s Pacific House Offices Completed

The decade-long struggle to regenerate the Sovereign Harbour Water Feature has at last reached a successful conclusion. The anchor-shaped Water Feature, comprising canals, cascades and fountains, is one of the largest of its type in Europe and runs through the private residential area of Columbus Point in Sovereign Harbour South.

Since its official opening in 2003, the Feature has suffered a chequered history, and there have been many periods of disrepair. Following a survey commissioned by Eastbourne Borough Council (EBC), the area’s developers, Aria Homes Limited, agreed to fund extensive renovation of the entire Feature. The Feature re-opened at the beginning of 2014. Unfortunately, after just nine months of operation, two significant leaks were discovered in the water circulation pipes.

Water Feature Finally Declared Fully Operational

In October 2014, Aria Homes agreed to fund further remedial work to replace the old piping, and the Water Feature was finally declared fully operational at the end of June 2015. The completion of this progressive programme of repairs will see the Water Feature develop into an attractive centrepiece in the Columbus Point development of Sovereign Harbour South.

Full Responsibility Transferred to Residents

Full responsibility for all aspects of the Water Feature has now transferred to the Columbus Point (Management Company) Limited (CPMCL), the company established specifically to manage the Water Feature. CPMCL is a membership based Company comprising owners of Columbus Point properties, so owners finally have full control over the management of the Water Feature.

Thanks to All Who Helped

It has been a long, difficult and frustrating challenge to restore this unique amenity to full operation. None of this could have been achieved without the hard work of residents’ own action committees, and the stalwart support of former Eastbourne and Willingdon MP, Stephen Lloyd, and his successor, Caroline Ansell MP, along with EBC, Cllr Gordon Jenkins, managing agent, Fell Reynolds, and the full cooperation of Aria Homes Ltd.

CPMCL is committed to maintaining the Water Feature as a relaxing, cost effective and pleasing environment within Sovereign Harbour, for residents and visitors alike.

Columbus Point Water Feature Update

Once again we look forward to another exciting month in August for the return of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which features a four-ship formation from the Lancaster, Spitfire, Hurricane and Dakota. The world’s only flying Vulcan bomber makes an appearance as it nears retirement and the Tutor returns to display its agility, along with a new variant Hawk T2 duo display.

Now in what could possibly be its final display season, the Vulcan cold war jet is set to perform over Eastbourne in a remarkable return to the show, after record donations from Airbourne fans last year. The bomber, which last visited the show in 2012, is a rare sight and unique to the display circuit coupled with the awesome Typhoon and what could possibly be the last chance to see the imposing sight and sound of the Vulcan, we are in for a real treat this year. While all of us look forward to Eastbourne’s spectacular Airbourne display, below are some of the details of Harbour Friends activities that have taken place and also future events in August and September.

Road Trip to Bodiam

On 13th June 2015, a group of 25 Harbour Friends including some friends set off for a ‘road trip’ to Bodiam. We didn’t have a good start as there had just been an accident on the Pevensey Bay Road, so the convoy was split and most of us made our own way there. After re-grouping in the car park at Bodiam Castle, we made our way to Bodiam Station and caught the first steam train to Tenterden on the historic Kent & East Sussex Railway. A very enjoyable trip; coffee was served and everyone enjoyed the journey through the beautiful countryside, stopping at Northiam and Rolvenden before arriving at Tenterden some 40 minutes later. A short walk took us to the High Street and the Turkish Restaurant, Ozgur, where we had lunch. We had just enough time for some retail therapy in the afternoon and enjoying the many shops ranging from antiques to fashion, amongst others before making our way back to the station for another pleasant journey back to Bodiam. Some of us stayed on to have a stroll around the Castle grounds at the end of what was a very enjoyable day. Again, thank you to Brian Drewitt for organising another successful trip.Bodiam Castle is set in the heart of an historic landscape, with spiral staircases, battlements and a portcullis, and is one of Britain’s most picturesque and romantic ancient monuments. Windows where arrows were once fired, a tower that was once a look-out and ruins that were once walked upon by knights.

Dinner at Seasons

On 14th July 2015, a group of 39 Harbour Friends went for dinner at Seasons in the Sovereign Harbour. The food and service were excellent with a marvellous atmosphere and also had the privilege of using their main dining room exclusive for the HF group. This is the third visit to Seasons by Harbour Friends, no doubt there will be more to follow in the future.

You can now recycle paper, cardboard, metal and plastic into one bin and no longer need to separate glass. Please go onto our website for further details. - http://www.eastbourne.gov.uk/residents/Operation Aimee took place on week commencing 22nd June. This is where the Neighbourhood advisors from all zones meet in the harbour to undertake responsible dog ownership patrols. #pickupafteryourdog we spoke to fifteen dog owners all of whom were carrying bags. Half the dogs were off leads, but were all behaving well. We gave out dog poo bags to all dog owners and educated them on the dangers of not picking up and responsible dog ownership. No fines were issued. During the operation the Neighbourhood First team kindly picked up 10 dog fouling, one bagged and one fox.

Customer First Update

Ed Faulkner – 07912 895045Martin Hylands – 07912 893311

Sussex Police has introduced new technology to help us serve residents better, and part of this is issuing Officers with new smartphones to enable them to access better information whilst on patrol. This does mean that Martin and Ed have been issued with new telephone numbers, so please update any records you have. The new numbers are at the top of the this article. With Summer, we get increased reports of anti-social behaviour. This year the complaints have primarily centred around the Water Feature on South Harbour, and the beaches near to Macquarie Quay. We have patrolled the areas regularly to tackle these issues and we have been able to reduce the impact of these incident on local people. The fact that residents have been reporting incidents promptly and accurately enabled us to tackle the problems before they become too bad. This is an excellent example of the community and Police working together to make Sovereign Harbour an even better place to live. We always encourage people to report incidents as quickly as they can so we can form an accurate picture of the situation, this can be on 101, or direct to the officers. Finally, we are very much looking forward to the Community Centre moving forward, we regularly hold community meeting and events and it will be great to use this facility for the benefit of everyone. It will certainly be at the heart of the community and will only enhance the close relationship that Neighbourhood Officers have with residents.PC CF161 Ed FaulknerEastbourne Neighbourhood Policing Team – East101 or 07912-895045

Well, it’s all exiting times for our club recently, with a change of Venue. We have been meeting in the annex of Simply Italian on the waterfront, since our humble beginnings last October and we would like to thank them sincerely for their support and hospitality over the last 9 months.

We are now based at the Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club and will now continue meeting there every Monday evening at 7pm (with occasional breaks for public holidays).

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the SHYC for allowing us to use their venue. Hopefully we can interact with them in the future and provide some great yachting themed pictures for them to appreciate, with an exhibition, perhaps?

Members Learn from Professional Photographer

We have been busy over the last month or so learning about food photography from our good friend and honorary member Ron Macmillan (professional photographer) as well as guidance on flash photography and using natural back-light (as demonstrated in our picture example), of the yacht club balcony.

We are all learning the art of using ‘Photoshop’ ( and other software), so that we can cheat, (sorry I mean enhance)our pictures) and there’s lots to learn there, trust me.

We have put our new venue to good use this week, with the kind assistance of “Sasha” our voluntary model, who agreed to pose for us, so that we could practice our skills at portrait and or fashion photography, which proved to be a very enjoyable evening with everyone competing for the best position and lighting scenarios to get the best picture. They will all be reviewed next week and we can hopefully then give Sasha a nice portfolio to remember her experience by.

If you are interested in photography (no matter what your level of expertise or experience) and fancy joining us for a fun evening and appreciation of the photographic arts ( that sounded posh didn’t it?), then please contact us at [email protected] or just come along to the yacht club on a Monday evening at 7pm and say hello, we’d love to see you and remember you don’t need any expensive camera equipment, you’ll be surprised what you can achieve even with a smart phone.

See you there ?

It is a great pleasure to update you on the incredible amount of activity at the club since the last publication of Waterlines. Firstly the charity event held at The Smugglers in Pevensey was completely sold out and raised £1,033 which was presented to Jane Brooks of “You Raise Me Up” Polegate.

July 7th was a double celebration as we held our presidential

handover event, David Philips stepped down and handed over to new president Ray Blakebrough. Prior to stepping down David had the wonderful job of presenting past president Anne Hardy with the most prestigious award

in Rotary, The Paul Harris Fellowship. This honour was recognition of Annes long term support of an orphanage in Mongolia. Over many years Anne has volunteered her time in Mongolia, at her own expense, as well as fundraising in the UK and via her bike rides in Europe. We are proud to support Anne for this superb international cause.

Club Gains Three New Members

July 21st was another huge event for us as we welcomed three new members to the club. This number of new members is quite rare for us and for many Rotary clubs. We had a great evening as Margaret and Blossom were introduced to the members and went through the induction process. Rotarian Steve also joined but actually transferred to us from Rotary Club Chesham. Steve is an ex club president and Paul Harris Fellow,

great to have such experience amongst our membership.

Finally, we were delighted to Welcome Sarah Groom of the Eastbourne Area Riding for Disabled. Sarah outlined the great work carried out by her and her team of volunteers and EARDA is now the president’s charity for 2015/2016. For further information on EARDA please click on this link

Harbour WI UpdateBy Judy Latter

President, Hiliary Hooper started the July Meeting by congratulating Hilary Lewis for taking a first and a second place in the Craft Classes at the South of England Show. Her lovely entries were on display for everyone to see. Several Harbour members helped with this event and entries are already being worked on for the Autumn Show. Hilary gave an account of her experience at Ardingly, explaining how much work goes in to it.Before reading the Correspondence, Irene Scoble told how she and Treasurer, Chris Bateman became cake judges at a local school and what a delightful experience it was.

Jacquie Frost then listed the future events for the members - Jan Field’s annual Strawberry Cream Tea on the 22nd July, a Centenary Concert and Picnic at Eastbourne College on the 6th August and a theatre trip to see “Annie” at the Congress on the 13th August. Followed by the ‘100th Anniversary Meeting’ on the 16th September.

Guest Speaker, Carolyn Heaps. Former Mayor of Eastbourne

The guest speaker was Carolyn Heaps, former Mayor and councillor of Eastbourne. Her talk ‘Partnerships and Life’ was an account of her life as the daughter of a mining engineer; from when she was born in Peru – her upbringing in Calcutta (with servants!) – of being sent to boarding school at the age of 9 – right through to her training to be an SRN. She worked at the DGH, St. Mary’s Paddington and finished with 15 years as a practice nurse. Eleven years ago Carolyn had a serious operation for cancer. Since then she has worked tirelessly for local charities, raising money by doing things such as ‘Wing Walking’, ‘Tandem Parachute Jumping’ and sleeping on the steps of the Town Hall in minus 4 degrees! And, she was also Mayor for two years!! She ended by telling the members to ‘Be ever true to yourselves.’

After the break, Hiliary Hooper gave her report to the members as their delegate at the Royal Albert Hall for the National AGM.

On the 16th July, about 20 members went to the Boship Hotel to see an exhibition of 100 years of flowers, food and fashion followed by demonstrations of flower arranging, sugar craft and a fashion show. All put on by hard-working East Sussex Federation members.

The Craft Club meet in the Baptist Church at Pevensey Bay on the 3rd Monday of every month. At the July Meeting the members met to finish the beautiful Quilt. Those not involved with the Quilt were shown how to do ‘Stamping’.

The Harbour WI meets every 2nd Monday of the month in the Sovereign Suite of the Sovereign Yacht Club at 2pm. Next month’s speaker will be Sheila Southwell with a talk entitled “One Thing Leads to Another”.

The Harbour wi has reached a maximum for the premises where it is held, but visitors are welcome by prior arrangement with Frances Harrap on 01323 472649.

We spent a huge amount of energy hosting the three day Laser Masters National Championships in June, which turned out to be the sailing and social success we hoped it would. 133 Laser dinghies competed in decent wind and sunny weather.

However we have also been busy expanding the boats available to our Saturday Cadet group, including three new 9 ft RS Terra dinghies which have proved to be popular with the sub-twelve age group. Equally the club has invested in three training windsurf rigs and has been undertaking informal training on Tuesday evenings and encouraging use over the weekends. In July we held a hog roast on our patio and terrace for 80 members, many of

whom camped over the weekend in our camping field.

At the end of July, 30 members will migrate to Chichester for our annual sail camp, where club and member boats are trailed to a water’s edge field for a week. Each day we explore different aspects of the delightful Chicester Harbour, Swallows and Amazons like, pulling the dinghies up on a local beach for ice creams, pub lunch etc before returning to camp for our evening BBQ.We are looking forward to our annual Sea Week commencing 10th August , which will see 100 members camping on the field behind the club and joining in a mix of family focussed activities, on the water during the day and in the clubhouse or beach in the evening. More in the next issue of Waterlines.Sunday racing continues throughout the summer and we are looking forward to a busy Autumn, with our Martello Race that runs in a loop with Eastbourne Pier and Bexhill at either end, a local junior inter club competition at Hastings and St Leonard’s Sailing club and what is now becoming the annual Bart’s Bash race to commentate the life of Americas Cup sailor Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson. For more information, visit: www.pbsc.eu.

Pevensey Bay Sailing Club UpdateBy Adrian Peckham

Despite the best efforts of a minority of the Calais workforce and the other, very evident, problems in the Calais area, we were able to complete a successful three day break to Northern France in mid June. We played at Belle Dune, near the seaside town of Berck Sur Mer, then at Le Touquet’s Foret Course and also added Nampont St Martin as an additional, last minute extra.Belle Dune Golf Course, near the seaside town of Berck Sur Mer is an excellent venue and it was appropriate that lower handicappers adapted best to the wet conditions. A very picturesque course and like all of those along this coastline, a pleasure to play.We moved on to Le Touquet’s Foret Course the following day, another great venue where our club secretary accumulated 37 points to claim the ‘prize’. Another well cared for Course and one to certainly play again. We added a third game as an ‘extra’ and selected Nampont St Martin, a Course we had visited several years ago. Recent weather conditions meant that the Course was not at its best but nevertheless very enjoyable, especially to one of our earliest members , who recorded his 16th victory with the Society.

Two Rounds of Golf, Two Nights B&B and Ferry Crossing £200

As an idea of the value that Heffle Golf represents, the price per person for two rounds of golf, two nights bed and breakfast in a single room and P&O ferry crossing was just £200.Closer to home , at the end of June we took advantage of an offer from Chart Hills Golf Club, where the offer of a ‘twilight’ round for £35 at 4.00 pm, including use of buggies, was good value. With 12 players we managed to beat the light fairly comfortably. We are returning to this venue on Tuesday 4th August for the same deal. Our most impressive venue, however, was the fabulous layout at Broome Park, near Canterbury. A long way from our Eastbourne base but a trip we will certainly repeat next year. Broome Park is built around the impressive home of Lord Kitchener, a sight you see as you approach the 18th green, guarded by a lake in front. Picture aboveOur recent games have attracted several new Members who have joined as a result of this and other publications where we have made ourselves known. We would, however, still like some more people to join us. Although we have over 40 people on our books it is difficult to accumulate about a third of these at any one time.Your standard of golf is more important to you than it is to us. All we ask is that you make yourself aware of the standard of etiquette that is required on a Golf Course. To assist with this there is a section on our website that relates to this.We will offer you a Society Handicap Certificate, and keep a full record of your playing performance for your information and interest. These statistics include the number of par 3s, 4s and 5s and the percentage of pars achieved per round along with your playing record in terms of games played and won and an overall percentage match score.Competition Winners Handicaps are cut by 2 strokes and those finishing outside of the top
