Q – I’m getting ready to seal some rusted bare metal as well as some brand new metal using RustSeal. Is the cleaning & prepping with AquaKlean & RustBlast really necessary? It seems like a waste of time.

A – We’re sure you’ve painted things that have survived the lack of prep before, but the finished result would have been much better had you prepped. The two proven key components for long-term rust coating performance are:

Newly sandblasted surfaces require no prep other than blowing off loose dust & are the ideal choice for direct RustSeal application. When I was in picking up my latest batch of paint for more restoration work and talking cars and paint, I picked up some KBS RustSeal so I could show other people how much fun I am having!

I found this 32 Ford V8 Flat head cylinder head in my parts bin and thought it would be an ideal part to demonstrate how the KBS system works . As you can see it is looking pretty ordinary with a bit of everything

on it from rust to dirt, old loose paint, oil and dried up grease.

I removed the old broken spark plugs on the side I am going to prep and paint then mixed up some AquaKlean about 1 part AquaKlean to 3 parts water this is a good strong mix and should clean all but the heaviest contamination (in which case you would use a ratio of 1:1).

I sprayed on a good amount and let it soak for about 5 minutes then I gave it a good scrub and sprayed on a bit more and left it on for 5 more minutes. Because it was a separate part I just hit it with a hose but if it was in an area that was difficult to assess a wet or damp cloth would work just a well. But of course the hose is quick and easy.

After using AquaKlean and some scrubbing, everything came off even the old broken down paint. The only thing still on there is the rust.

Now I got out the RustBlast and gave it a good soaking with it and continue to keep it wet for the next 40 minutes or so also giving the loose rust some encouragement with a clean wire brush. As you can see we did not get all the rust off in 40 minutes but we got most of it. We could have kept going and gotten the remaining rust but the KBS RustSeal is more than capable of handling these remaining areas of treated rust. So we rinsed it of with some water and let it dry completely.

Now for the fun part. Give the RustSeal paint a real good stir … 2-3 minutes should be fine for most colors. Do not paint out of the can if you want your paint to last! I poured out what I needed using a paint spout then closed it up again. RustSeal is normally good for 6 months once you open it if you follow this method.

I brushed on two coats about 3 hours between coats. The first coat penetrates the surface and really locks in to the porosity. The second coat seals it all up then it cures. Man does this stuff cure every time I use it. It always blows me always as to how hard and tough it sets.

You can see that with the minimum effort that I used, I got a permanent coating on a surface that you would normally have assumed “had to be sandblasted” or sanded for a month of Sundays!

Now that is fun to see what you started from right beside the finish part normally the whole thing is painted of course and you are asking your self was it really that bad when I started?

Summer was on the way and I had this spring project in mind for sometime, which was to get some shade cloth up for the back of the house, not the biggest project going around but enough to keep me busy for a while, which was fine by me! Anyway it all went well and the 4”x 4” poles went in and it was all looking good. So I had the neighbor over for a quiet 3 or 4 and we were talking as you do and the topic comes around to how are you going to paint those welds and the galvanized poles as his galvanized painting all came off 18 months after putting it on, then all the welds went rusty! For the home painter, galvanized surfaces and welds can be quite problematic. Trying to find a product that does both things, that is seals the welds and primes the galvanized is not easy and if you live near the coast you must get it right because even galvanized only lasts a few years unpainted before spot failure can occur.

So let’s get started and it’s here where most people go wrong at the very first step. Remember, the weld is covered in carbon and other nasties so you must clean it. The other big mistake people make is thinking that the galvanized poles are clean. They are not clean! At many places where the steel is warehoused they put oil on the galvanized surface to keep it from oxidizing and keep it looking new. No paint or etch is going to work unless you clean all of this off. Some people try solvent cleaner which can

sometimes remove the excess but the surface is still not clean enough for etching or for painting.

All I did was mix up a little AquaKlean (about 3 parts warm water and 1 part AquaKlean) in a trigger spray bottle and sprayed away. I gave the welds a good scrub and just wiped the rest down with a rag dipped in AquaKlean, then gave the whole thing a good spray with a hose, all in about 5 minutes. The weld is much cleaner but it still has weld scale on it, which we do not want to paint over or you will get the same result as the neighbor.

Now pump on a little RustBlast and keep the weld area wet with the RustBlast for about 5 minutes and pesto … no more scale! The RustBlast is also ideal for etching the galvanized surface and

it does this very quickly. You only need to leave the RustBlast on for 2-3 mins (you will see it working as the galvanizing changes color slightly). Again, bring the old hose into service and a quick rinse down. All I had to do then was let it dry (I like this part) aka lunch time!

Then I mixed up a little RustSeal grey I had and spot primed the welds only, and followed with a coating of RustSeal over the whole thing this gives me two coats on the welds which is a must and one coat on the plain galvanising which is fine then a topcoat. I used a water based house paint to match the house, an oil based topcoat would have been better (but I couldn’t get a color match in an oil based product). But because I have the RustSeal underneath, it will be fine. You should know, if you are using water based latex paints in metal or corrosion protection it is a good idea to make sure you use a high quantity primer system underneath as water based latex type paints have little if any ability in corrosion protection. Just ask my neighbor!

And now I see that KBS has the new Galvanize color of RustSeal. Next time I’ll be using that!

There is a lot of rust in the tank. The first job at hand is stopping everything I pour in the tank from pouring out. A little wine cork and some duct or electrical tape is ideal, but just use whatever you have on hand as long as it works. I then poured out ½ the quart of AquaKlean and mixed it with some warm to hot water. I poured

the solution in … no special tools here … just give it a shake and repeat every few minutes. If the tank is old and well-used like mine, you will be able to smell all the gunk the AquaKlean is dissolving inside the tank and you suddenly realize why you have to clean the tank. After about 10 minutes I tipped the solution out and boy it sure looks different now – nasty! Just repeat the cleaning process with the remaining solution of AquaKlean and rinse with water. I now have a clean but still rusty tank.

Next, I simply poured in the RustBlast (rust remover). I also left a little in the bottom of the bottle for later, not more than an ounce.This is a simple step … just give it a shake every 3 or 4 minutes to keep the inside surfaces wet. I just did this while I was in the garage working on something else. After about 45 minutes, I drained it out and rinsed well with water.

The RustBlast didn’t remove all the rust but it did get rid of most of it. The sealer is more than able to handle any remaining corrosion. The Gold Standard Gas Tank Sealer is quite similar in chemistry to RustSeal and is able penetrate the porosity of the corrosion and seal it.

Oh yea … I also treated the outside seems with the remaining RustBlast, just using a small brush. At this point, I made sure that the tank was bone dry on the inside. Now for all you type A personalities out there, do not go and get the gas torch and give it a cook up! One of the easiest ways to get the inside bone dry is to use a heatgun (the type for stripping paint). Or what most people use but do not boast about is their wife’s blow dryer. Just warm the tank up and all the water starts to evaporate. I was able to see the water vapor coming out of the top of the tank. It took about 20 minutes and the inside of the tank was completely bone dry.

It is now sealing time! Open the can and give it a really good stir and pour the whole contents into the tank. There will be a little left in the can and I will use that in a minute. Slowly tip & rotate the tank all around until all surfaces are evenly coated. You’ll have a minimum working time of 30 minutes with the Gold Standard Gas Tank Sealer.

I propped the tank up and drained out the excess sealer by tipping it in some different positions ... it took about 30-40 minutes. I left the tank to cure. With the left over sealer in the can, I painted the seams and welds on the outside of the tank to make doubly sure I had that tank sealed. This of course can only be done if the tank has been stripped and is being completely repainted.

It is also at this point if you have any rust on the outside that you prime it with RustSeal before carrying on with regular automotive primers and topcoats. There you have it! Let the sealer cure at least 4 days before adding fuel, and you’re ready to roll!
