Billy VeraHarlem to HollywoodBilly Vera

Summary(Book). Billy Vera: Harlem to Hollywood is the extraordinary story ofsinger/songwriter/actor/music historian Billy Vera, suburban child of a showbizfamily who fell in love with black music at an early age. With the murder of Martin Luther King Jr. and the arrival of theWoodstock generation, the change in the culture renders blue-eyed soulsingers like Vera irrelevant and a decade of '70s survival gigs ensues, untilDolly Parton's version of one of his songs hits number one. Relocating to LosAngeles, our hero forms a band, Billy Vera and the Beaters, and finds careerrenewal in the form of a hit record and a side career as an actor. At the ripe oldage of 42, he finds himself with a number-one record, followed by a star onthe Hollywood Walk of Fame and eventually a Grammy award, all without everfalling into the musician's trap of drugs or alcohol (we told you this isn't yourtypical musician's tale.) Guns N' Roses FAQAll That's Left to Know About the Bad Boys of Sunset StripRich Weidman

Summary(FAQ). Bursting onto the Los Angeles rock scene in the mid-1980s, Guns N'Roses redefined rock 'n' roll turning back the tide on the excesses of glammetal and the banality of MTV-spawned New Wave/synth pop by infusing theblistering hard rock of Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith with a punk sensibility thathearkened back to the onstage anarchy of the Stooges, New York Dolls, andSex Pistols. In 1987, GN'R released the seminal album Appetite forDestruction , which reached number one on the U.S. charts and to date hassold more than 30 million copies, making it the bestselling debut album of alltime in the United States. However, GN'R's outrageous excesses andself-destructiveness led to turmoil in the early 1990s as the original bandmembers went their own ways all except lead singer Axl Rose, who forged onthrough a series of lineup changes to finally release the long-awaited albumChinese Democracy in 2008. Guns N' Roses FAQ charts the amazing journey ofthe band from their early West Hollywood club days to their skyrocketingsuccess in the late 1980s and their downfall in the 1990s all the way to their2012 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the reunion of three ofthe five classic band members during the 2016 Not in This Lifetime Tour.Readers will discover a treasure trove of interesting material in Guns N' RosesFAQ , such as the band's earliest influences and venues, most notoriousconcerts, opening acts, highlights of their seemingly endless Appetite forDestruction and Use Your Illusion tours, bizarre TV appearances (like the timethey destroyed the set of MTV's Headbangers Ball! ), feuds, the story behindtheir music videos, best and worst covers (Pat Boone, anyone?), and muchmore.

Contributor BioRICH WEIDMAN (Ocoee, FL) is a writer and editor. Breaking Down the Walls of HeartacheHow Music Came OutMartin Aston

Summary(Book). Popular music's gay DNA is inarguable: from Elvis in eye shadow tok.d. lang's female Elvis; from Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" to David Bowie'sbisexual alien; from Frankie Say "Relax" to house music godfather FrankieKnuckles; from Kurt Cobain in a dress to punk icon/couture model Beth Ditto.Yet most of the first performers to defy the social and political conservatism oftheir time were typically the least visible, such as the '50s lesbian rockabillytrio and the '60s gay soul renegade, the gay country music band and the realgay glam and punk bands, the first queer rappers and trans rockers. BreakingDown the Walls of Heartache is not only the first book to tell the story of howmusic "came out" but to the first to shed light on these hidden pioneersalongside their famous counterparts. Author Martin Aston's ambitious andcomprehensive narrative unfolds over a hundred years, against a backdrop ofsocial and political shifts, as gay liberation transmuted into LGBTQ rights, pushing for visibility and equality, from 1920s liberalism through to the closetof postwar years, the eventual breakthroughs of the '60s, the permissive '70s,the mainstream invasion and AIDS crisis of the '80s, and the advances of the'90s and noughties. Aston also documents the retrogressive steps in Russiaand parts of Africa, where songs bravely encapsulating the LGBTQ experiencesignify how the journey from illegality and bigotry to freedom is far from over.

The British Amp InvasionHow Marshall, Hiwatt, Vox, and More Changed the Sound of MusicDave Hunter

Summary(Book). The seminal British amps of the late '50s onward were always distinctfrom their American counterparts, which were generally designed for jazz, country, and dance-hall music. The British amps were designed to hit theground running for rock 'n' roll. And as that music gradually dropped its "roll"through the course of the '60s, these were the first amps that truly rocked too.Not only did British-made amps by Vox, Marshall, Hiwatt, Orange, and otherspower the groundbreaking music of the major British guitar heroes all threeBeatle guitarists, plus Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend,Peter Green, and Yankee expatriate Jimi Hendrix, among countless othersthey quickly became the premier choice for American arena stars. In just ashort decade, as musical styles swung from British Beat to British Invasion toBritish Blues to Heavy Metal, British amplifiers ruled the day. You simply didn'tplay anything else if you wanted that sound. Through behind-the-sceneshistories and compelling personal anecdotes, with liberal use of periodimagery, The British Amp Invasion: How Marshall, Hiwatt, Vox, and MoreChanged the Sound of Music chronicles what should have been a minoralso-ran offshore industry that turned quickly into a true world leader. Thisbook charts the confluence of British industrial ingenuity and pop-cultureevolving at breakneck speed and the symbiotic relationship that was born ofthis partnership. Art inspired industry as industry influenced art, and togetherthese elements produced the most powerful music ever known to mankind asound that still resonates today, in the most literal sense possible.

Summary(Book). Electric guitars do not happen by chance. They look and sound andplay the way they do by design. And the people who design today's guitarsdraw regularly from the treasury of great instruments created in the '50s and'60s. Why did the Telecaster, the Les Paul, the Stratocaster, and the ES-335 soinfluential? Who designed the Gretsch 6120 and the Rickenbacker 12-string,and what has made all these '50s and '60s creations last so long? Is it possible now to do truly new work, or has everythingbeen done before? Does any contemporary maker have the nerve to ignorethe achievements of the past? And can a single design of today still aim to bea universal guitar for everyone just like the Strat and the Les Paul? Nothing UntowardStories from "The Pumpkin Pie Show"Clay McLeod Chapman

Summary(Applause Books). In Rest Area , Clay McLeod Chapman offered a view intothe lives of Southern Gothic monstrosities. Now, the 40 tales of NothingUntoward delve into the depraved minds of those madmen and women whodrift along the periphery of humankind. Sometimes darkly humorous, sometimes strangely heartbreaking, these stories explore the domestichorrors of the everyday, finding terror within our own households. Haunting andhilarious, these sharply tuned diatribes are more than simple horror stories inthe traditional sense. These offbeat psychological portraits are presented fromthe perspectives of the very monsters themselves. The heroes of these talesare murderers, loners, and drifters. Spanning over 20 years of the rigorousstorytelling session "The Pumpkin Pie Show," the tales collected here are to beread out loud or to yourself, if you're brave enough. The oral tradition is aliveand well with these stories, captured on the page for you to share around thecampfire, or flip through in bed late at night. These are ghost stories forpeople who don't believe in ghosts, haunted by their own crumbling minds andwounded hearts. A perfect mixture of tongue-and-cheek gallows humor, psychological terror, and character-based storytelling, Nothing Untoward:Stories from "The Pumpkin Pie Show" focuses on the darker side ofdomesticity and won't let go.

Contributor BioCLAY MCLEOD CHAPMAN (Brooklyn, NY) is the creator of the rigorousstorytelling session "The Pumpkin Pie Show." His previous publications includeRest Area, Miss Corpus, and The Tribe trilogy-Homeroom Headhunters, CampCannibal, and Academic Assassins (Disney). Summary(Book). The business of being a musician has evolved into the entertainmentbusiness encompassing music creation, concerts, licensing, festival organizing, merchandising, fashion, and branding. Consequently, the management ofmusicians is complicated and important. There are as many artists trying to"make it" today as ever before. The buddingpersonal manager should find this edition useful as well. The subject ofmarketing using social media is thoroughly discussed, including useful toolsfor maximizing success. The examples of modern recording contracts include360-deal computation as well as "standard" clauses. Record companies are nolonger just record companies. SchumannA Listener's GuideVictor Lederer

Summary(Unlocking the Masters). Here is an essential guide to the musical works ofRobert Schumann, along with an engrossing account of his tumultuous life. Many, if not most, major composers improve over the course of their careers, but the reverse is unfortunately the case with Schumann, whose talent wasseriously compromised in later years by a series of physical and mentalillnesses. Throughout Schumann: A Listener's Guide , Victor Lederer providesunflinching critiques of the weaknesses that plagued Schumann's style, alongside his triumphs. Lederer explores the full spectrum of the mastercomposer's oeuvre from his popular early music and lieder, or songs, to hisworks for chamber ensembles composed in 1842, to his four beloved, ifflawed, symphonies. Lederer also takes in Schumann's dramatic works, particularly Genoveva , his only opera, and Incidental Music to Byron's"Manfred," an underappreciated musical score. Schumann: A Listener's Guidecomes with a CD with two of the master's most daring imaginative flights, theDavidsbundlertanze for piano and Dichterliebe "A Poet's Love" one of thegreatest song cycles and works for voice. Both are discussed in detail in thetext.

Contributor BioVICTOR LEDERER (New York City) is the author of seven other books in theUnlocking the Masters series, including Chopin: A Listener's Guide to the Masterof the Piano; Debussy: The Quiet Revolutionary; Verdi: The Operas and ChoralWorks; and Ravel: A Listener's Guide.

Mathilde Wesendonck, Isolde's DreamJudith Cabaud

Summary(Amadeus). The biography of Mathilde Wesendonck is the untold andfascinating story of this woman's inspiring influence on the major works ofRichard Wagner, based on facts related in their correspondence and otherauthentic documents. Under the influence of her aura, Wagner composedTristan and Isolde , Rhinegold , The Walkyrie , the first two acts of Siegfried ,The Meistersinger , the outline for Parsifal , and the music for the WesendonckLieder on Mathilde's poems. The discovery of unedited letters by author JudithCabaud sheds new light on Wagner's life and works. After the Revolution of1848, Wagner, like many others, found refuge in Switzerland. In Zurich,Mathilde's husband, Otto, befriended and financially supported the composerin his musical endeavors. As neighbors, Mathilde sent her poems to Wagnerand received them back accompanied by the music of the Wesendonck Lieder. When he sent the poem of Tristan , it had become a reality, their reality. Thetwo lovers then had to choose between union or separation from theirrespective families. Torn apart, they began a passionate exchange of letterslater censored by Wagner's second wife, Cosima Liszt. Many documents werefalsified or destroyed. After Wagner, Mathilde aspired to continue to be themuse of a great musician. With Brahms, she wanted to write the libretto for anopera, which the master could not compose. Her poems and her playsremained consistent with her life, which was the story of love, fidelity, andsacrifice.
